The Gothic thriller taken to new hype. And in that last sentence there is one word that does not belong: Gothic. DMC 2 is essentially Shinobi Redux. There is no story, no mystery, and little more than pressing the buttons to acheive moves.
Pros:
I strain to find any. But, Disc 2...Lucia's quest is a little better than Dante's. Still has all the cons, though she reminds me of BloodRayne.
Cons:
1. Lack of a storyline, of any kind.
2. The camera angles are so bad that most of the time you are lost or don't know what you are fighting.
3. Dante's modeling is from a far distance and the combat is rhetorical at best.
4. It mimics Shinobi in most aspects. There's the empty city, deranged tanks and even copies of those hated dogs from Stage 3-A.
5. The swordplay was taken directly from Onimusha & Onimusha 2, it's that obvious. But, in this game...the sword will get you killed. It's all guns, no glory.
6. Dante is slow. He runs through the city in a crawl-like way and it takes forever to get from one place to another.
7. The beginning takes a lot from Tomb Raider and is quite pointless. You don't know where you are in this game and there's nothing to find.
8. It takes forever to power-up and there's not enough enemies in a single mission to get you the orbs to power-up.
9. The attack method is not similar to the original and The Matrix stunts won't get you the high demon rank.
10. Graphics. Twice the graphics, huh? The graphics can't hold a candle to Onimusha 2 in gameplay. The cutscenes aren't anywhere near Onimusha (1 or 2)and there is a scene where Dante slides down a pipe - similar to Final Fantasy X, though far less impressive. The main gameplay is reminiscent of BloodRayne...though...not in its league.
Ok, I gave you 10 reasons for the my point. Capcom has been in a frenzy to produce so much this past year and ahead with Resident Evil Zero, RE 1 remake, and RE 4. The company has given us high quality games such as the Onimusha series, the original Devil May Cry and others. This leads me to believe that this DMC was overhyped and underdeveloped.
This wasn't intended as a bash review and I didn't want to write it in that way, honestly. I looked forward to this game for so long. My suggestion is that you rent this one first, see if you like it, and during that week rental...surely you can pick up the game if you are into it. I'm sorry fellow gamers, but the hype doesn't fit the game. This is not Devil May Cry...it's a confusing mess. It is not Gothic, not dark, and holds no bearing to the namesake.
I'll probably get a lot of unhelpful votes from the hardcore, but I'm in the top 5000 reviewers (feel free to check my rank) and I won't steer you wrong.

Intro - Let it be known that I have not finished this game. I have enough information to write a temporary review, which will be properly enhanced and revised once I have beaten the game. The reason for me posting this now is because I know many gamers and people alike are interested in reading up on this highly anticapated sequel, due to the great success of the awesome original. For now, everything I say is worth reading if you are interested in this game, and want feedback from someone who actually played it, and does not work for the game company.
Regarding the first, I loved the first DMC, but the end was terrible. The guys at Capcom really didn't know how to end it, which is ashame because everything flowed perfectly until then. It is obvious that you don't through mini-games at the end of a action/adventure. The whole red airplane (for those who beat the original) idea was cheesy and lame. The game also didn't need that silly space shooter at the end before you fight the big boss who killed Dante's father.
Enough said about the original, the second seems to have really improved over everything thus far ... except the story which is less involved. I guess this could be a good thing, because the first DMC built up this story about Dante's father in hell and Dante never saw his father. Devil May Cry 2 is not focused on building up a big story, therefore we can't be disappointed when the end story becomes weak and chiche' like the first.
DEVIL MAY CRY 2 - Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. Now, this is my thus-far review on DMC 2! Dante hero has returned to continue his war against the underworld of demons and super-villains. Joined by a hot chick named Lucia, you can choose which character you want in the beginning of the game. Each character plays extremely differently regarding moves, speed, and style. Lucia has some awesome martial arts that will attract many gamers. Choosing either character will create alterations in the story. Each character gives you a different ending (I have read) which adds nice replay value for the majority who buy this game.
Gameplay - Devil May Cry 2 took a little bit of time to grow on me due to the huge change of enviroment and open spaces. The game isn't twice the size of the first, it is like five-ten times the size! This should give gamers 20-30+ hours of gameplay. The game is very simular to the original in terms of gameplay, but the moves in this one are amazing! The same engine is used, however, Dante is really modified. Two examples are the famous double-jumping, as well as running up walls like in The Matrix! At first I was expecting something different, but in time I realized that this game was very addictive and makes you explore more than the first. The levels are so much bigger, and the detail is much more impressive over-all, as opposed to the first. I did not notice any jaggies, slowdown, clipping, etc ... all gripes I had with the first Devil May Cry. Hopefully the game will stay like that, because the draw distance is damn impressive, probably the best seen yet on the PS2. You can make it to the top of the buildings and see for miles, running across the roofs and jumping from building to building, all while battling monsters in the air and on ground. It is really a site to see.
Story and Complaints - The only complaint I have is that the story and plot is pretty weak. DMC 2 seems less involved in story than the original. It is pretty straight-forward and simplistic. I believe we learn more about both Dante and Lucia as the game progresses, but I havn't reached that far to review that. In a nutshell, Dante returns with this hot, new girl (Lucia) to take care of business and kill the demons and monsters sent from Hell to cause chaos. It is a cheap excuse to make such a storyline, but everyone knows that if you want a deep, engrossing story, you play Metal Gear Solid. Anyway, DMC2 will be the biggest game of this year, next to Halo 2, Silent Hill 3, and Fable AKA Project Ego. (if that ever gets released) Also, I have seen several official cut-scene's on www.ign.com. I wish that DMC2 didn't copy off The Matrix during several parts. I really hate when games rip-off other things, but that is a minor gripe.
Devil May Cry 2 totally surpasses the original in terms of graphics, size, and gameplay. To say DMC2 is a little better is a joke. DMC2 is awesome from the start. I have only seen part of it so I can not fully judge the game as a whole. Trust in mine though, the gameplay is identical to the first one in every way perfect, stylish, and flawless. Do not expect as much innovation at first. If there is innovation, it will come later in the game after you've earned it. I truly hope there is martial arts for Dante, as that was damn awesome in the original.
In Conclusion - Devil May Cry 2 is highly recommended. It is the greatest action/adventure game I have ever played to date, next to Zelda - Ocarina Of Time and Metal Gear Solid 2. The camera angles simular to the first one, yet they seem to have been better tweaked and adjusted, giving you the best possible view on every angle. Most times, the camera simply follows you while changing angles and it all works great, just like a movie. For me, this technique is excellent, not boring like the still shots that have plagued the Resident Evil games. DMC2 stays true to the coolness of the original, but improves and adds so many things that I can't wait to see all the things in the upcoming missions. New moves may take some time for gamers to "get" but the learning curve is fairly easy, whether you're familiar with the first or not. The new enemies are very different and more relentless. The boss fights are once again very competitive and impressive. I have only seen the first boss fight. I will not spoil anything. Buy this game when it arrives. It is flat-out awesome!

Considering Capcom's track record with sequels outshining the originals, I anxiously awaited the release of Devil May Cry 2. The original game, while not without its flaws, was a greatly executed game that combined great 3-D action of today's new era with older action gaming elements. Devil May Cry 2's problems come into play with the improvements made from the original. While the levels are quite larger than the original's, the level of detail and personality are nowhere to be found. The environments just look so generic and unappealing that they will become instantly forgettable. Dante has a few new moves that are easy to pull off, but are worth nothing more than to improve your stylish action rating. Dante also has a partner named Lucia, but her levels are pretty much the same as Dante's only shorter and some go in a reverse order. Also, Dane's ultra cool attitude that he had in the original we hardly see any of until late in the game, but then again the game is rather short, and players will walk away feeling disappointed. All in all, fans of the original should pick this up as a rental, but prepare to be disappointed.

I've heard a lot of people complain about the lack of plot for Devil May Cry 2. I'd like to point out, not too many people go to see an action movie for plot, so why should a game be different? Bearing that in mind, I have to say DMC2 lived up to MY expectations, and surpassed them.
DMC2 is the first two disc game for the PS2, so far as I know. This allows you to play as either Dante or a new character, Lucia. The introduction of Lucia (who, actually looks like a real woman, a plus for this female game player) is a welcomed addition. Also new is the Bloody Palace mode, which allows players to fight through 9999 rooms just to test their mettle, while earning orbs along the way. The controls have been improved, as have the graphics. Along with a few new moves, abilities like Air Hike from the original DMC are now automatically incorporated for both characters.
Gone are the (rather cheesy) lines of DMC, at least for Dante. (The main villain is another story. Fortunately, we don't have to see him too much.)
If I have one complaint, it would be that there's really not enough gore to warrant that warning on the opening screen.
If anyone is looking for a Devil may Cry CLONE, you will be disappointed. If you want a solid action game with smooth moves and solid visuals, (and a hero who kills with much style), then I highly recommend Devil May Cry 2.

At one point in Devil May Cry 2, Dante tells another character, "Devils never cry..." However, if Dante laid the money down to buy this game, The "coolest character ever made" (said Playstation Magazine) might actually cry. The saddest part about this game is that Capcom took a sure winner with amazing potential and took a HUGE step backwards with this sequel. To fully see why this game is literally so-so, you have to look at the positives and negatives.
The Bad: Beyond the horredous story (Never truly fleshed out when it is and why Dante showed up), the biggest fault with this game is that it is extremely short and way too easy. I sat down at 9 in the morning on a day off and by 10 PM, with a few breaks, I had finished every nook and cranny of the game, including the lame Diesel costume changes. (Perhaps Diesel gave Capcom money to help finish the game). That's about 10-11 hours of playing (without cheats) to find everything...on two discs.
With the gameplay dumbed down and with a story of almost porn quality, you would think other aspects of the game would make you happy. Unfortuantely, you'd be wrong. To begin with, there's the blasted camera. Many a time I cursed Dante as I could not see the action since the camera would not move. Capcom, please, make the camera moveable with the right analog stick. In one level I got stuck behind a pillar of light and could not see where the enemies were or what I was attacking. Ugh.
The enemies: Not much variety here and you know there's something wrong when they bring back baddies from the first game (that was annoying).
The graphics: They are exactly the same as the first. Barely a step up. That's weak. Also the Music is monotonous. Except for the "power up screen", the musis stays the same for the whole game.
Again, I have to emphasize: The script and the voice acting are very bad.....and somewhat rehashed from the first game.
Where are the awesome weapons from the first game. I loved upgrading the gloves and cool sword. In this one, you can upgrade, but it doesn't really do much.
Is there some good: Yes, but not much. This game is great for blowing off steam since all you do is blast baddies the whole game. While there is alot to be annoyed at throughout the game, it can be fun, especially trying to build up to "S" level combos (the ONLY place I found something challenging was trying to get the combos).
Some of the bosses are well designed. Not necessarily difficult, just pretty to look at until the level ends.
I was a huge fan of the first DMC and I thought this one would be great, but I have been very disapointed by this game and Capcom should be ashamed for putting out what feels like an extremely rushed game that takes a great character and premise and sullies it. Poor Dante is probably sobbing somewhere.
Bottom line: You can RENT it if you dare, but DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.
What a Waste

This just might be the worst video game sequel of all time. Extremely disappointing. Here goes:
-No story whatsoever. There doesn't even seem to be a reason why the characters move from one "area" to the next.
-Overrated graphics (How can anyone tell if they're any good when the game is so dark)
-Repetetive, repetetive, repetitive. Don't be fooled by the "twice the gameplay" line, Lucia's missions are more or less carbon copies of Dante's.
-Dante's attitude is gone. Now he just comes across as self-serving.
-Pointless in-game maps.
-Bad dialogue and voice acting. What is up with Lucia's accent?
-Unappealing villains (with bad accents!).
-Absolutely horrible environments! Gone is the gothic eeriness of the castle and deserted island from the original. Instead we get garish high-rises and generic city streets. None of the atmospheric tension that made the original so much fun.
-Stupid stupid stupid stupid monsters that are horribly drawn. I guess the "graphic sizzle" went into making cobblestones, because most of the monsters are just clumps of dark color. And all the incarnations of said monsters (as they level up) look exactly the same. Cherub babies? Devil monkeys? Seriously?
-Numbing soundtrack that never changes. Ever.
-Pointless upgrade system that only rewards hardcore gamers who care to replay the same game over and over and over again in order to reap the rewards of maxed out weapons. Hey game designers! Not all who buy your products are video game addicts who spend all their free time in front of the TV, paddle in hand! We part-time gamers deserve a rich gaming experience as well!
-And the worst thing about this game: the grading system that rewards players for rushing through each level as quickly as possible. See my previous comment. Also, Capcom: doesn't it stand to reason that the faster someone blasts through this game, the sooner they will be back in the store, spending money on your competitor's products? Why reward gamers for finishing your title in one day? I could go on and on about how little business sense that makes, but I won't. Point is, from the point of view of a gamer who only plays one or two titles a year and likes to relish them while they last, this grading system seriously detracts from the fun.
If and when DMC3 comes out, DMC2 has taught me to rent first.

Wow. This is sad. For anyone who's played Devil May Cry 1, avoid this sequel. Rent it if anything, but don't bother buying it. Let me list some things:
Graphics: Nice looking, but gone is the "battle-shift" of the camera when in combat with enemies.
Gameplay/control: Timing attacks are gone and replaced with button mashing madness. As is gaining new attacks as the game goes on (all attacks are now usable at the beginning). The Ifrit Gauntlet weapons are gone, leaving Dante with only his sword as a weapon, not that you'll really ever need that considering his guns will take out anything that moves. And as other reviewers have said, the running up walls feature is merely for show as it has practically no use.
Difficulty: Ridiculously easy. One thing that was great about Devil May Cry was its difficulty. DMC1 is the most difficult game I've ever played (settings include Normal, Hard, and "Dante Must Die" modes). It took me weeks, if not months, of practice and work to beat all the games settings. For DMC2, I went through the game as if I was on a walk through the park. Way too easy.
Storyline: For those who've played the first game, you really can't say that it had a mind-shattering storyline, BUT at least it HAD ONE. DMC2 has no plot whatsoever. In the first game, Bosses made sense and had awesome introductions. In this sequel, Bosses appear out of nowhere and have no relevance to the "story" Dante's new side-kick Lucia doesn't do justice to the lost presence of Trish either.
Dante's coolness level: Gone. Dante has maybe four or five lines in the entire game. Only two of which are worth noting. In DMC1, whenever some forboding boss would enter there would be an awesome entrance sequence in which Dante always had something cool to say. Not only are there no such entrances in DMC2, but Dante never speaks either! As mentioned, he has maybe five lines at best.
Overall advice: If you just want button-mashing madness with no plot nor replay value, RENT this game.
If you want something that requires a lot of gaming skill, something with a plot, something with replay value and cool cutscenes, BUY the FIRST Devil May Cry and avoid this sequel.

This sequel really surpasses all expectations. It is much better than the first. Itz not as riduculusy difficult anymore, and has many more cool moves. So what if Dante doesnt really talk? The fight system has been really improved and so has the camera. The bosses are awesome and have plenty of health to offer some challenge. The jumps have become better and Dante's motorcycle is really cool. The guns and swords have great upgrades, and its awesome being able to turn into many different types of demons. The missions are all very different which is quite suprising. The plot isnt that great, but lets face it, most good things nowadays have very little storytelling. Some things that you get to do in this game dont really need explaining. Everything is pretty much perfect except for Lucia. She really didnt need to be added. Instead Capcom should have added more gameplay with Dante. Also, the changing music gets kind of annoying because the change warns you when your going to be attacked. The monsters pop out of nowhere, but hey, its really fun killing them. There isnt even an apparent reason for this game to get an M rating. So if you liked the first Devil May Cry then you absolutely MUST get the second, or you would miss out on a great game. Happy demon killing!

Many remember the blockbuster smash hit by Capcom that was Devil May Cry. A game where you, the lucky gamer, got put into the shoes of the cool half-demon, half-human Dante. It was a solid game, allowing us players to do things we could only dream of. It was challenging, fast and most of all, cool. Controls were solid in that game and the enemies seemed to be as tough as you. The game rated you on how "cool" you were when you played, and we all remember mashing the slash button to get that "stylish" rank. It was a fun time, and now with high expectations, Devil May Cry 2 comes out...
What happened? The game has lost the appeal and style that made the original so great. Sure, the graphics are better and there are more moves, but the enemies are now simple pushovers. The camera does a poor job most of the time, not allowing you to get a good look on your foe. Remember the original, where the camera would let you appreciate EVERY feature on your enemies? In this version, battle scenes seem to be too far away and it just looks like a confusing mess. What's the point of improved graphics if the player can't see them?
Gameplay, one of DMC's strongest categories, has been butchered and watered down. The controls have been completely changed and are now too confusing for their own good. Also, the auto-aim feature is poorly done and often turns Dante to target another creature while you are in the middle of a sword combo. It is so frustrating when you're trying to do a 7-hit sword slash combo, and the stupid auto-aim targets a creature WELL out of range, making you hit nothing but air! And when you do manage to pull off that "cool" sword combo, the combo itself is disapointing. It seems to get slower and leaves you with that feeling of wanting more.
The gun play is back with a very, very few number of improvements. The origional DMC's unique style of using both guns and sword in harmony was a big draw. Now it seems that the gun and sword are impossible to use! The evil auto-aim will target wrong enemies when you try to fire your guns. And also, many enemies in this game are air-born and fly around. Not a problem since Dante can jump up in the air and shoot, right? Wrong! Dante does have a new move that allows him to turn upside down in the air and fire his guns down onto the ground. This is done when you jump twice and fire your pistols. However, Dante will do this no matter what, which is frustrating. The only way to see enemies and get a good shot is to do a double jump. But if you do a double jump you do that stupid upside-down move and completely miss your enemy. So you're stuck with firing your weapon and praying it hits the enemy. And there isn't much fun to standing in one place firing your weapon blindly.
The stupid auto-aim and new moves leave Dante vulnerable alot. So then, why don't the enemies rip his head off like they would do in the original if you stood still for a second? I'll tell you why, the enemies are morons. I seriously could just stand still for 55 seconds (I timed it) with about 9 enemies around me and not get hit! All they seem to do in this version is stand around and bark. Of course, some of the stronger ones will throw a fireball or two at you, but they are so easy to dodge it's not even funny. The level designs are poor and will make you bored, and the bosses seem to just be regular enemies with a larger health bar. In the origional DMC the bosses were memorable. When you fought against that lava spider, you REMEMBERED the mood, the music, the gameplay. However, in this version it seems after you beat these so called bosses, you scratch your head and say, "that was a boss?" Then you forget them forever. They offer no challenge.
The characters and story have not changed much, in fact they have gotten worse. Dante doesn't seem to be as cool as he used to, Lucia's voice is way off and the overall story is unoriginal and has too many cliches. I realize that many people don't play action games for their story lines, but the story should have been better. I am disapointed on how Dante changed. He lost his personality and just seems...not Dante. And the soundtrack which was originally buzz-metal rock seems to have changed in this version also. It is way too repetive and just seems to be wild and unfitting.
Overall, this game is a disapointment and seems only to be a scheme for Capcom to milk the DMC franchise. A poor storyline, push over enemies, poor controls, poor soundtrack, and bad camera angles just make this game bad compared to its original hit. I hope Capcom can actually make improvements to this game if they decide to make another one. I bet everyone would have ignored and hated this game if the first game wasn't so great...
Please -- I suggest you save your money and just keep the original game!

Ok, this was my first time playin a devil may cry game. I bought this game today and boy is it FUN. Some people say the monsters are easily killed, those people are liars. It takes a few slashes / gun shots from your sword or gun. What im trying to say is, there is no need in renting this game, if your into action/killing games, this is the game for you.
Actions
