Mix of old and new DMC

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

Devil May Cry 2 is really not so different than the first game. The basic system of collecting red orbs and completing missions is the same, as well as the general fighting sequences.

The plot revolves around the two playable characters Dante and Lucia, who each have their separate missions on separate discs. We learn different parts of the plot from the 2 discs, thus if you were to just play Dante the whole way through, much of the plot wouldn't make sense. It's good to alternate characters every two missions or so.

A new system of Devil Triggering which uses amulets which allow you to customize what powers you have (such as rapid healing, flight, etc.) while in DT mode. There is also a new arsenal of swords and guns.

Characters also have abilities such as running on walls and double jumping that allow players to pull off some incredible fight scenes.

Fans of the orignal game may be dissappointed by Dante's lack-luster attitude for the first half of the game, but towards the end he regains some of his cockiness.

Camera angles once again can get annoying when you have trouble judging distance for jumping or seeing where your enemies are, though the latter is not so bad thanks to the ability to auto lock-on to enemies with your guns.

I was not impressed with this game at all. It seemed to me that the creators were thinking a little too big.
In the first DMC most all of the fights were close up and personal so you could see in great detail each and every slash. In DMC2 it's like playing Contra, you just jump around shooting things you can't see and Slashing once and awhile.
Also who can forget the great question of the first game "would you like to play in easy mode?". What made the first DMC so great was that it was a very difficult game to play, and anyone who doesn't think so probobly played in easy mode.
However in this newer version I almost fell asleep it was so easy. You can kill almost everything in the first half with just the pistols.
I will say however that there were some improvements on the controls and interface of the game. The quick weapon change buttons, and the devil power abilites were nice, but they don't make up for the other stuff.

This game sucks

Dont waste your money this game sucks. I recently purchased this game. Sure the graphics might be nice ,but wheres the story. All that ever happens is you run around killing demons. Also this game is way to easy run shoot kill run again ,and again. Theres horrible camra angles half the time you cant see your self or the thing you supposed to kill.

Tedious, In Your Face, Watered-Down Action!

I didn't play the original Devil May Cry, but I heard a lot of good things about it so I picked up the sequel. I thought the fact that the box and manual played up the whole "Dante's cool as hell, and the new girl is sexy and dangerous" so much was funny.

The game is tedious. You could easily stand there and pound the fire button and get through the entire game. Add in some combos, different weapons, and jumping attacks and...well, you don't add much at all. They don't really say where you are, why you're there, and what random boss you're fighting as you advance through the game which leaves you with a sense of "who cares?"

I played it for a few minutes and instantly wanted to take it back. I beat the whole thing in a couple of hours, hoping that things would get better later in the game. It didn't.

It's a decent looking game, and it would be good for a quick rental but nothing more.

What happened CAPCOM?

Capcom usually releases extremely good sequels that are always better than the first one! But this one doesn't do that. In fact aside from most of those cool moves coming back there is no reason to go out and pick up this game at all. Unlike the first one it isn't full of action and brilliant cutscenes. Instead the cutscenes are nothing but "fillers" for the game. The characters are horrible with one-liners that couldn't possibly work in these situations.

To start off with the good, the game actually does have a nicely done combat system which isn't too different from the first one. Battling is the same but as I'd expect with Capcom, they didn't introduce many new moves. I remember when I started juggling enemies in the first one it felt like I was actually doing something to exploit the freedom the game was giving me. It was different to do something that simple. This one is different from that feeling. I don't know if it's because I exploited all the cool moves in the first one or if it was because this one didn't look as stylish.

The new character I think is a joke! What happened to Trish? She was a brilliant character and the first one ended with her being Dante's sidekick. This one does not go into enough (if any) background.

One thing I was extremely disappointed in was the fact that CAPCOM didn't do anything about the Camara Angles. They're still terrible only this time it's worse. At least in the first one you could see what boss you were battling. In this one some bosses are too big to even fit on screen and you'll spend several minutes looking for them or the right spot to hit.

The enemies are still cool looking though. They don't disappoint in the blood splatter. The gripe with THIS element is that we don't see them enough. In fact there are many moments in this game where you'll be bored and waiting for action. The music doesn't give you this cautious atmosphere like the first one did. In the first one when you rushed into a room you had no idea what to expect because enemy placements weren't always the same. But in this one when you go into a room...you're wondering if there will even be an enemy there.

To conclude this, the game is a disappointment compared to the first one. The graphics are nice and to have Dante back is another plus but the game doesn't live up to the first one. So many Capcom sequels are much better than this. If there is a Devil May Cry 3, let's hope it's better than this.

Sean David Reviews Devil May Cry 2

Let's be honest. Judging by the trailers and magazine ads, the sequel to the PlayStation 2 smash hit, Devil May Cry, it looked very cool. And it was the day I got it and the strategy guide. Wall flipping and multi-directional shooting was very fun and easy to pull off. Unfortunately, it wore off soon enough and after a few months( and beating the superior first one on both difficulties ), I realized how shallow and disappointing DMC2 was. Ignoring the confusing and laughable storyline, even the gameplay is watered down. The game plays likes it on the Easy Automatic difficulty of the first. And don't be fooled by the other difficulties. The only real challenge lies in the Dante Must Die or Lucia Must Die, and even so, it's nowhere near as challenging as the first. You get 3 different swords, but your first one serves a better purpose than the other 2, despite what the guide says. And they lack any kind of personality and level of coolness like Ifrit or Alastor. Guns consist of your trademark pistols, shotgun, sub-machine guns( which is, in my opinion, the worst set of weapons to have on here ) and a rocket launcher. Now, due to the open levels, which are pretty dull most of them, you'll practically be using your guns a majority of the time instead of the swords, and that sucks. The 2nd disc is the other character's story, Lucia, who is almost like Dante, but a little better, a little worse in some aspects. She doesn't have any guns, save for the bowgun. She carries swords, sticky bombs and throwing daggers. The best thing about her is you actually have to use her melee combat moves over her projectile weapons, unlike Dante, which is the opposite. Like I said earlier, wall running and jumping is cool, but it serves NO purpose whatsoever. It just there for decoration. Voice-acting is even worse than the first with Dante spewing out the most generic one-liners I've ever heard. Now, for all the horrible things I've said about this bland sequel, there are a few redeeming qualites. One is the graphics are quite good and the CG is great. There is a ton to unlock like secret characters and an endless dungeon. And both Lucia and Dante aren't all that bad to play as. Hopefully, they'll get it right in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, which looks infinitely better that this, and reclaim the fun and cool factor of the first. I give a terrible 2 out of 5. Tis a sad day indeed. This is Sean David, signing off.

Until then,
Semper Fi, Carry on.

Devil May Cry was a classic with great gameplay and had lots of style...This...doesn't! I will make this a short review...
The game had good visuals like the original but was lacking on good story and was waaaaaaay too short and too easy. Devil May Cry was easy to learn and was a bit of a challenge but this was just complete bull..

Too easy and waaaaay too short. This is nothing like Devil May Cry 1.

Overall I have to give this..

2.2 out of 5 stars

Game is lacking in a lot of places and is just painfully bad. No were near the original Devil May Cry..This game has lots and lots of flaws..Just wait for Devil May Cry 2 comes out cause hopefully it will be waaaaay better then this (...)..

(...)

Good effort.

In my view, this game is THE disappoitment of the year. In fairness, the original game Devil May Cry set the bar pretty high, so it was always going to be difficult to better it. Well this not only is not as good, it falls well short.

The original Devil May Cry was nearly flawless, the best thing being the main character Dante. Capcom had created the most stylish superhero ever, and the scene was set for a cracking sequel. However, in Devil May Cry 2 they have taken away the things which made the original fantasic.

The game does have good points to warrant it's 3 stars. The graphics are very, very good, and the control system is possibly the best on any game ever. Fans of The Matrix will love Dante's ability to run up walls Trinity-stylee. The moves are the same as the original along with a couple of new ones too. But now i must bring up the bad stuff.

The first glaring problem is that this game is too easy! Admittedly the original was not exactly taxing, but it had a few puzzles which were quite tricky to solve. But in this game, the puzzles are so simple it's laughable. The solutions to each problem are always staring you in the face and it takes some of the appeal out of the game. Also, the enemies are varied, but all too easy too beat because of limited attacks and not enough aggression. One of the features the game boasts is 'Self adjusting difficulty'. This is all very well, but not when the difficulty level is this easy. Veterans of the original will literally be able to close their eyes and attack!

The other problem, and this is the biggie, is the plot, or rather the lack of plot. There is some vague storey of a Company executive named Arius who is trying to rule the world, but you never find out why. As for Dante, well. He must have about ten lines throughout the entire game, hardly interacts with any other characters, and doesn't give the monsters any of that cocky backchat we loved him for in the original

A game like this should have the same features as an action film. Fighting and killing, of course, but it needs a story and good characters. Devil May Cry 2 has neither. The original had murder, betrayal, sacrifice, emotion and a great plot. This game has none of these. It's good for about a week, then the game just gets boring. I've given it 3 stars because what's good is very good(the graphics and the controls) but unfortunately what's bad is horrid. A real shame.

all i have to say is the second DMC has an uneventful storyline, hardly any action and when there is action you can't help but ask yourself 'why am playing this and what do i care?' the battles are far and few, the bosses seem to come out of nowhere making you scratch your head in confusion and the graphics (besides the cutscenes) look just like the first DMC

Great sequel to an already Awsome game!!

I must say that Devil May Cry 2 is one of the best games that there is to play. Graphics and gameplay make it almost impossible to top. However, there are a few flaws in DMC2. First off the camera angles are horrible. Throughout most of the game, you will probably miss important spots that you won't be able to see due to bad camera angles. Second, the story is very unclear (although I and a lot of gamers could really care less what the story is. And last, there is not a lot of moves you can do while you are in Devil Trigger (most of you might know all the moves you could do in the last game with Alastor and Ifrit). One thing that I forgot to mention that is not one of my complaints is the difficulty level. A lot of people said that the game is too easy. Well, try to beat the game on Must Die mode and see how easy it is. Overall, it's a great game only for the TRUE Devil May Cry fans!
