Ouch. That hurt Capcom!!

Devil May Cry 2 was one of the most anticipated games of 2003 for me. Needless to say, I am dissapointed. Where the first game was extremely cool and fun, the second is a shadow of it's prequel. Where to begin:

Graphics: While this sequel looks better, the backgrounds are boring and see uninspired compared to the first. They really make no sense, and seem like they were just looking for some generic looking open areas for you to fight in.

Gameplay: Ouch, this really hurt. Now Dante can run up walls and flip off them Matrix style and dive bomb enemies with both guns first. Sounds cool. Looks cool. But in realty, they are quite useless. Gone are the cool moves you could perform with your sword, to rack up that style meter. Now, you will be lucky to not use Stinger and fly your enemy across the screen ending your combo. Dissapointing. You also get to use Lucia, a second female character on a second disc, but this seems more like an afterthought...her missions are boring.

Story: Ok, this is an action game so story shouldn't count right? Well, in case it does for you, don't bother because there is none, and what is there makes no real sense. Seriously, this game makes very little sense.

Misc: The game is easy. Ridiculously easy. I didn't die once. I didn't come close to dying once. I never used a single healing item. In fact, I never used a SINGLE item in the entire game. Unbalanced indeed. You can now basiclly use Ebony and Ivory to shoot everything and never get shot, and now you don't evenm have to hold the R button to draw them. Good for people who never played games before. Bad for fans like me. I played without using the guns, and had the same problem. Just too easy.

The list could go on about how the sum of the parts in DMC2 just don't add up, but I never thought I'd be blasting a Capcom game. Even the menus are boring...in the first, when you switched weapons, there was an animated image of that weapon. Now there's nothing. It is fun for a little while, but it's boring compared to the first game. I wanted to like this game, believe me. Pick up the original which is now a Greatest Hits title. And hope 3 is a true sequel.

It's good not great.

Anyone that has played the first Devil May Cry game will understand this review. By no means is DMC2 a bad game. The problem is the original DMC is still so much better. The first game put the player in a win or [lose] situation so suspenseful it made the game scary and fun to play. What really sets them apart is the gameplay. DMC1 is still ahead of its' time. You were rewarded for pulling off some nasty combos, and the moves were not hard to execute. In DMC2 things are quite different. The mood is spooky but the suspense is gone. Dante is to slow, but then so are the enemies. Actually there more like cannon fodder because you can practically walk the entire game without taking much damage. The combo system is the most frustrating part. Once again those who played DMC1 will understand. You start hacking away and by the time you have D score the enemy flops over dead. The bosses for DMC2 rock. The most fun to be had will be facing those oversized uglies.

If DMC2 were its' own game without Dante and the Devil May Cry name it would be a pretty decent game. Unfortunetly,it follows are superb game in DMC. The creators of the game may have to go back to the original formula if they plan on continuing the series.

This is the real Dante's Inferno...DMC2 is a scorcher!

Let me start at the beginning.
Flash back, November, 2001.
A good buddy of mine invited me over to play some games on his kick-... set up. He was enthused to show me Devil May Cry, and I had heard so much about it, I was excited as well. As he played the game, battling the first boss, Phantom, my jaw hung open in total bewilderment. I mean, the game was flat out gorgeous and full of action. And what I had seen that day didn't scratch the surface of sheer, unhindered brilliance the game possesses. But I never even picked up the joystick.

Flash forward, February 2003.
I purchased Devil May Cry 2 and its predecessor came along with it, free.(How sweet a deal that was!) I popped in DMC first and was floored. Amazing action first hand, kept me glued to it for about 3 hours before I made myself put it down. I knew immediately it was the best single player action game I had ever played. Hitting back flips, bussin' the gat at ghouls and ghosts, totin' a sword swingin' lightnin'. Dude! You must be kidding! I haven't had this much fun playing a game since Metroid Fusion! (You like that joke?) But, it's like, my action game prayers were answered. Prayers I didn't even needed answering.

As for Devil May Cry 2, I was hesistant to pop it in, because I knew it would be better. I just didn't know how much better. I wish I had never put it in, as I haven't finished part one yet. But, folks, I pressed one button, the jump button. I was like "What the...! Are you kidding me!" I thought the trailer was all FMV footage. It was actually action scenes from the game! Everything has been totally redone, revamped, hyped up to a God-like degree. I have never seen anything so fantastically gorgeous!

Dante's moves are straight out of some Japanimation flick. He can now double jump in the air from the start. The double jumps are VERY high. While in the air he can, of course, shoot, which makes him soar even higher. What flipped me out was that he can shoot UPSIDE DOWN. Also he can perform backwards-hand spring flips to a finishing no-hand back flip to dodge enemies. With that you have a new targeting system which lets you lock onto enemies individually.(It is not a hindrance.) You don't have to keep pressing the shoot button either, you can just hold it down. While shooting and locked on to enemies you will also see him aim ONE of his guns behind him and shoot, ala 'Equilibrium'(for those who have seen the kick ... sci-fi flick). He performs no hand cartwheel flips with the ease of a gold medal gymnist on speed, and can run up and along walls reminiscent of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

So how cool is that, and I found out all of this just playing through the first level. People, hear me. The darn game is TWO DISCS long! Insance fun is about to be had. Also, you can play as a beautiful young vixen by the name of Lucia as well as other secret ladies who shall remain nameless. I haven't even played as the girl yet.

The story is, if you read the book, quite believable and decent. I can't wait 'til I finish the first one so I can play DMC2 again. My faith in good gaming has been renewed. If you don't get this game, you just aren't worthy of having a PS2.

Not as Amazing as the first game...but still Great!!!

I loved Devil May Cry 1. I thought it was one of the greatest games that I had ever played. Usually I will just beat a game once and sit it on the shelf, but with DMC 1, I went through the game 5 times because I couldn't get enough of it. So I was very stoked about the sequel. DMC 2 is not as good as the first one but it is still a fantastic game. Here are some pros and cons about the game

PROs
1. 2 discs/2 adventures
2. Bloody Palace Mode
3. Larger environments
4. Being able to save anytime you want.
5. Graphics are superb
6. Unbelievable control

Cons

1. Can be a little too easy at times.
2. Can be a little too difficult at times(Trismagia)
3. Too many boss fights...sometimes you move from one boss directly to another one. I prefer to go through a stage and the boss be at the end.
4. The story is very weak
5. Upgrading weapons and buying powerups is way too expensive. You don't really get enough orbs to buy anything unless you go through the same stages several times. I don't like how vitality orbs and devil trigger orbs become more expensive as the game progresses...they should stay the same price.

All in all...if you are a Devil May Cry fan you need to pick this game up. If you have never played either 1 or 2... make sure you get DMC 1 first then this one.

Can't wait till DMC 3 comes out!!!

Thanks for listening.

The first 'Devil May Cry' is one of my all time favorite games. It had a lot of style, action and was a real challange. This sequal though leave A LOT to be desired! Everything that was great about the first game was either watered down or taken away from this one. This game lacks any real style, Dante is still cool but he's far to shy this time around. Forget about any witty/cheesy oneliners too, you won't find them! The story is pretty much 'nothing', I wasn't even sure why I was fighting my way through this game, it makes the first game look like classic literature...maybe not but it still isn't any good. And talk about an EASY game! Even with the unlocked 'hard setting' it's still a joke. The first one was so unforgiving and took real skill to get through. This time around you just shoot. Everything I've said so far has been comparing it to the first game, but I prefer to see the game on it's own, hence the four stars. It really is a fun game! There is still plenty of action, a few nice weapons and even two characters this time. It may be a very easy game but blasting through demons is still great fun. There are a few new moves, while mostly useless still look neat. The graphics have improved and they look great, some of the boss designs look fantastic. The game also controls really well, maybe even better then the first. One thing for sure is that it's far to short. Most people will be able to finish it within a few days. Those who beat the first game will probably finish it over night. There is still a lot of fun to be had when played again, lots of goodies to unlock. In the end 'Devil May Cry 2' can't even hold a candle to the first, but not to many games can. On it's own though it's a solid addicting and fun action game. Sure it would have been nice for a more worthy sequal but I still had fun. Probably rent it still.

What To REALLY Expect From the Sequel

This game allows you to play as two characters, Dante who relies on guns and swords and Lucia who relies on Katars (Or some other form of hand blades) and throwing daggers. Characters have the abilites to run up walls, jump in the air while shooting, as well as other acrobatic feats. The game adjusts the difficulty level to your setting which is really handy to get the most out of the gaming experience. The new environment looks huge and should allow for plenty of space for kicking demonic arse. Hopefully this game will maintain the high quality of the original, and from the looks of the screens it probably will.

Big Disappointment

I was very exited about this game. According to reviews, this game was supposed to be a vast improvement on the groundbreaking Devil May Cry. Supposedly, it featured better graphics, more moves, and more tasks to perform in each mission.

... I'll break down each problem I have with this game:

Graphics: Although they are nice, they are far from impressive and in no way are they better than the original Devil May Cry.

Moves and Items: With the exception of the wall climb, there are no new moves. Although the wall climb looked cool, there are no parts in the game when it is required. Also, you can't create different sword combos by tapping the button at different rhythms like in the original, and the fighting style of this game seems clumsier than the original. The combos you can perform in this game do not look as fluid. The second playable character, Lucia, has similar moves to Dante and does not seem like a completely different character.

Gameplay: I read in a few reviews that the missions would take longer and require more tasks (flipping switches, finding stuff, etc.). This was not true at all; the game was in fact very linear, much more so than the original. The second playable character was a nice touch, but all you do is play the same game with a few changes in the plot and level design. Capcom did a much better job with Resident Evil Zero, in which the two characters help each other and fight together. Finally, the difficulty level of this game is a fraction of that of the original. In the original, you were constantly being pitted against powerful enemies, and even the most basic enemies were a challenge. In this one, you just slash through the enemies and fight semi-difficult bosses. You have to beat this game and unlock hard mode to get a real challenge.

This game had a lot to live up to as the sequel to one of the best games ever made, so I'm not too surprised that if fell short. But this game seems like Capcom slapped it together to cash in on the success of the original. If you're a fan of Devil May Cry, don't expect to be dazzled.

(2nd Rating) Finally IT CAME OUT AND IT RRROOOCCCKEEEDD!

This game is definatly a sequal.
Choose 2 characters ( Lucia some new girl and have a little attitude) And DEFINATLY !!DANTE!! The gunner Sword drawing maniac that has the ability to change into a
fully-fledged-demon!!! Lucia changes into a skylight angle that uses these light attacks. ( They are both partly opposite). The reback of the game is awsome.

I'm giving DMC2 3 stars just because I loved the first so much... It just isn't devil may cry, it has Dante and his moves but you just run around a town with out ever seeing any story and well... just isn't as fun as the first. The weapons are boring compared to the first as well. It looks like they combined Onimusha, Shinobi, and Devil May Cry to make this game.... it just didn't turn out well...

Still waiting for "Devil Never Cry"

This is the sequel to one of the best games of all time. Unfortunately, there are so many problems in the execution of the title that it ends up being... boring.

In its predecessor, every enemy, item and weapon had unique style and fit into the overall theme of the game. There were no zombies, cyborgs, or other cliche monsters - instead every creature had something unique to offer. But here we have a rather lame cast of "monsters" that don't do anything unique, don't look special, and are dumber than a bag of rocks. Because of poor AI, the enemies are ludicrously easy to beat.

Dante has a couple of new moves that seem like they would be cool on paper. Unfortunately they have no function in the gameplay, so you basically get to try them out, then fall back on the monotonous (but supremely effective) moves and tactics. At least two bosses can be killed simply by rapidly pressing the fire button when you're at a distance. It takes about five minutes but I found it to be the most effective technique. How lame is that?

The graphics are decent but the level design is pedestrian. The music and sound are so-so, definitely not as exciting as the last title.

It's obvious that the original creators of this awesome franchise had very little to do with this sequel. Capcom just wanted to move some product, and this was the result.

This is the video game equivalent of the straight-to-video Disney sequels.
