dante, why have you forsaken me?

without a doubt, capcom's "devil may cry" is one of my favorite games ever. i have gone back to it many times because there just wasn't any other game i wanted to play. when "devil may cry 2" was announced, i tracked it obssessively. i checked for new screenshots and information on an almost daily basis, i watched the in game videos at least twice a week. i knew it was going to be cool.

but i was wrong. so very wrong.

"devil may cry 2" is missing all the charm the first one had. the story is completely incoherrent and seems to have been tacked on when capcom realized they should probably include one. the cut-scenes are boring, short and completely lacking dante's personality from the first one. yes, he is older now, but why has he become so silent? one of the best things about the first game was seeing him in action during the cut scenes where he was completely sarcastic and full of confidence.

the gameplay is ridiculous. this game is so easy, you don't even have to think about what you are doing. the combos are easy to achieve, and the swords and hearts that you use really don't seem to make much of a difference. the uh, "puzzles" the game has require no logical thinking--you just smash things. and the bosses? i found them easier than the normal monsters.

the thing that got me the most about the game is that the second disc--lucia--is more fun than dante. she at least is not something you have done before in a previous game. however, any fun is negated by the fact that her part of the game is even shorter than dante's.

that is another major problem about the game, length. i know they are making action games short these days, but i was hoping for more than eight hours of gameplay over two discs!

this game really disappointed me. i wasn't expecting a game as good as "devil may cry" but i was at least hoping for something in the same spirit. the developers seemed to have gone for a more "style over substance" approach--oo just look at those disel outfits you unlock, what a great reward for beating the game--and incorporated a lot of cool looking moves without really thinking about any other part of the game.

this gome is good just not what you would expect

First of all Geoff is a moron, this game is NOT horaml. The game just didn't grow, at all. The game play is the same as dmc1 and the graphics are not top noch. The graphics in the game are better then in some of the cut seens. that doesnt make sence! The combat is still GRAET. An other thing is that the game is way to short of two disc. Its like the diveliper put two discs in for the hell of it. Over all this game is not bad just didnt live up to the expectations. If more time was put in to divelopment This would be one of the solodest game in a long time. If you like CMD1 you will probly like DMC2.

When good franchises go bad

I bought this game at the same time I bought the original DMC. I started playing through the first one and was completely blown away by the nonstop action. I hadn't started on the second one until I beat the first one. Then when I popped in the second one, my jaw dropped in disbelief! This could NOT have been the sequel to Devil May Cry. The nonstop action seemed to have been replaced by wider areas and minutes upon minutes of nothingness. While I'm all for expanding on the environment for exploration, I'm totally against sacrificing the action that the original portrayed so well.

As far as the story for this game goes...is there one? I don't consider "Kill the big business tycoon turned demon" a story. While the story hasn't been the franchises strong suit, at least the first one made sense(somewhat). And the level design doesn't make sense, either. On one stage I'm fighting a helicopter, and in the next stage I'm running away from flaming monkeys in a factory?! Come on! There doesn't seem to be a real rhyme or reason as to why you are fighting.

The game's few saving graces are the graphics and the spot-on controls. All in all, however, this game should be chalked up as one of Capcom's failures.

A Decent Sequel

While I praise Devil May Cry, its sequel, while still a good game, has some issues. First off, kick ass Dante who I so praise in my above review is seemingly gone. His character says all of five sentences during the entire course of the game, and bases all his decisions on the flip of a coin. Didn't Two-Face from Batman do that? Anyway there's a second disc with another playable character, the oddly shapen Lucia. Lucis has her own story, her own moves, and her own weapons. The problem here is, we really don't care because we don't understand her story. In the original DMC, we understood what Dante was searching for, the purpose of his quest, and we enjoyed everything he encountered along the way. In DMC2, we don't understand why Dante is even on this mission, or why he is interacting with Lucia. Did the creators suddenly forget about Trish from the original? I think it would have made more sense to place her in Lucia's role. All in all, it is unfair to compare DMC2 to it's predecessor, but that is what nearly every reviewer will do. It is still a fun game, with new monsters, new weapons and new moves, but it is a far cry from the original.

A Big Bore!!!

I got this game thinking I would have a great time playing, but was soon disappointed... the weapons are cool, the graphics are okay, but all the elements of the game just don't seem to come together...Don't buy this game!

Zzzzzzz...

Since the first Devil May Cry is one of my all-time favorite games, I had high expectations for this sequel. However, I was truly disappointed in the game. The controls are not as smooth as the original and it is way too easy of a game. It comes with 2 discs (one for Dante and one for Lucia) but both can be completed within about 5 hours. Even the hard modes that you unlock are simple.

The new attack animations are definitely a positive feature of this game, but they don't make up for the lack of gameplay. Both characters have new abilities, like running up walls, but you pretty much never use them. Just slash and shoot over and over and over again. There's also a small variety of bad guys so the levels are just repetitive. Most of the time they just come out in large groups but they are so easy to kill that there's no point in wasting your energy on them.

This game is rent worthy but not worth the price of purchase. If you end up liking this game, I'd highly recommend the first one. It's a hell of a lot better and it's a Greatest Hit so it's also cheaper.

Good but too easy

When Devil May Cry burst onto the scene in 2001, it gave action junkies what they really craved: Dante-a cool-as-hell gunslinger with an attitude and fancy moves right out of The Matrix. It was a very tough game that shoved novice players aside and bulldozed those who stuck around with a barrage of oh-so-cool character techniques, eye-popping special effects, relentless monsters, and rewarding thumb-taxing gameplay. Like the recent Shinobi (albeit to a lesser degree), DMC was difficult-but not impossible-to complete, and one got a true sense of accomplishment from beating a tough boss on the umpteenth try or executing a "Stylish!" combo. The sequel, Devil May Cry 2, tries to appeal to a broader gamer base, with a "friendlier" enemy A.I. and action reduced from boil to simmer. In this case, however, "easier" doesn't equal "better." For the unfamiliar, Devil May Cry was basically a playable big-budget action movie: The plot didn't really matter and once the lead started flying all you could think about was the next target. The methods of mayhem at your disposal were awesome and unique, whether it was juggling enemies in mid-air with a steady stream of gunfire, shattering armor with a well-timed punch, or delivering a double-barreled shotgun blast that propelled an enemy across the screen. DMC2 picks up where the original left off, as demons are once again running amok, and devil-hunter-for-hire Dante returning to the scene to do what he does best. However, he's joined by a second playable character, the knife wielding Lucia, who has her own unique moves...and motives. Lucia is the more challenging of the playable pair; she relies more on hit-and-run tactics and has a better selection of exotic weapons. DMC2 uses the original's Mission-by-Mission approach, as you obtain various orbs that can be cashed in for weapon upgrades and assorted power-ups. However, the level design is completely new and that's a big problem: Several Missions take place in huge, wide-open outdoor spaces that reduce your character to dot-size as they move at what seems like a snail's pace. Creepy gothic structures and settings are interspersed with urban landscapes, cities, and factories, which don't exactly create a demon-hunting atmosphere. What's really missing is the intense, edge-of-your-seat close-quarter combat that made the first game so arresting. Here the action isn't as layered, there's no rush from smashing or drilling enemies, and the limited combo system ("Show Time!") is unrewarding. The few and far between ferocious battles are peppered with an expanded plethora of puzzle-solving and platform-hopping tasks, the latter of which are all the more frustrating thanks to haphazard and awkward camera angles. Ultimately, you never really get immersed in the game; it feels more like simply passing through levels and fighting bosses, sans rhyme or reason. Not that DMC2 lacks favorable new aspects. The graphics are sharper than before, and Dante's been given some new moves such as the ability to fire dual weapons in two different directions and hike up walls. The new playable character, Lucia, adds diversity and replay value, and it's interesting to watch her and Dante's intertwined scenarios play out. The soundtrack, though, lacks punch-especially the sound effects. Weapon discharges are muted and not as intense as they should be, and the inappropriate disco music that starts whenever you engage in combat will set your teeth to "grind." Competent voice acting lends life to various characters. Devil May Cry 2 is still an interesting second installment in Capcom's new franchise. Those who were turned off by the ramped-up difficulty may find this sequel to be more "player-friendly," while the camp of hardened Devil vets may find this game to take one step forward, but two steps back. Overall, Devil May Cry hasn't lost its edge, but the blade is somewhat dulled.

COOLER THAN HELL!!!!

I think that Devil May Cry 2 is a great game. It may not be as good as the first but it has its moments. All you people that say this game is too easy, try beating the must die mode on either Dante or Lucia's Disc. I gaurentee you wont beat the 3 head oracles on your first try in must die mode.

capcom destroyed something beautiful

the origin of everything wrong in this game is that capcom had a different team working on the game. the combat is dull even though you have a lot of moves. the different team is the origin of the HORRIBLE plot and the CHEESY dialogue. honestly, where did that dumb coin come from. The prequel was a classic but this game is so horrible in comparison. Lucia, pick an accent and stick with it, nuff said. this game took out the desire of looking forward to a devil may cry 3. stop tryng to make this game look good with positive reviews b/c you're just lying. DMC fans: face it this game was not satisfactory, thats it for the DMC series. don't waste your good money on this, buy a real gothic action game from the LOK series...PLEASE.

great game
