Pointless quests with no real conclusions. CTD every 30-45 minutes. Lengthy dialoge with no real human attachment. All in all a VERY unpolished product, even with the patch. If your favorite aspect of the first game was the story then do not buy this game.

For the second iteration of KOTOR, I have a few comments. The gameplay was practically identical to the first KOTOR which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed the first one at the same graphic/interface level and the main enjoyment was the developing storyline. KOTOR 2 mostly delivers this, and by mostly there are a few parts in the game that just sort of "happen" without any interaction primarily near the end of the game, where your control is extremly limited and bounced around from area to area with not a lot of explanation or transitioning. Indeed it feels like the end was rushed and hastily thrown together, there was hardly any transition time..it was *poof* you are there.
The minor enhancments to the engine I liked. The ability to influence your companions to go light/dark through your actions and even train them as Jedi was pretty good. The upgrading gear was enhanced as well, they did a good job with it. You can really upgrade your weapons into total death machines in the later part of the game. I would definately recommend uping the difficulty in KOTOR 2 as 90 percent of the fighting is no challenge especially as a Weapon Master, even in the ending parts, Sith Lords were chewed through in like 3 seconds without even using a medkit.
I did expierience some random crashing and I have a very new system. The crashing for me was in particular areas, not necessarily a continuous thing. Some patching to tweak this and the game should be slightly less annoying.
The storyline for KOTOR 2 is much more complex than KOTOR 1, with a hefty increase in dialogue and character interaction. Rarely is anything major in the game straight forward, it's a web which I think mainly stems from the old woman that travels with you (Excellent character). The storyline like the gameplay felt very hurried in the end which was not so good.
Character development was fairly decent. The Old Woman being at the top with the most interesting character. The initial Han Solo type character was pretty uninteresting and sterotypical, being at the bottom.
Overall I enjoyed playing it, the crashes were a bit annoying but manageable. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 due to the crashing and the parts which felt they just hurried to make a deadline.

The biggest thing I did not like about this game was trying to play it the second time through. Much of what I did was an exact repeat of before, just because the plot must advance the way it does. It just seems like, with such a complex game, they could have made more variety in it. But that's not a big drawback - certainly the first KOTOR did not have nearly as much variety as this one. The second biggest thing was that there weren't as many puzzles as in the first KOTOR - but I'm a math major and I like puzzles, so not everyone would probably find this a bad thing.
But the game is AMAZING overall! The puzzles are replaced by deep thought-provoking questions: what is good? What is bad? Ultimately, many good deeds or deeds that were done with good intentions, lead to bad things in the long run. And the logic is amazingly twisted (no spoilers): not only does one think that the Jedi ultimately did a bad thing for the Empire by attacking the Mandalorians because then the Sith invasion came, but also the Jedi who sat by and did nothing did a bad thing ultimately. So really, the right thing to do was uncertain, and it seems only those with the clearest vision can make the right choices: Revan. Thus one of the biggest points of the game was to make the player think grander thoughts: not to move the small pieces randomly, but to have a grand plan always and do small things, whether good or bad, in order to accomplish one's bigger plan. Doing small bad things can lead to greater good in the future and vice versa.
But other than the deep philosophical stuff, there is lots of great action, great new powers that are really fun to use, many fun missions, and especially an extremely well-done last mission where the graphics are just awesome. There are lots of places to choose light or dark, and sometimes when you think something will be a good choice it is not really, and vice versa. I personally thought it was harder to just choose a side (light or dark) and stick by it. I think this game is more complex in almost every way, but it is also more fun in most ways. Definitely a worthy sequel!

ok well first I think that this game is complete unlike many reviews that say it isn't. I think they left PLENTY of room for a sequel but this one in itself is complete. I have played it at least 7 times all the way through now and it never get's old. I think the side quests are fine as well and there are so many of them you see a new one each time you play again.
I think that lucasarts did a good job with this one. Now for the newbies who havn't played a KOTOR game before =].
this is a RPG (Role Play Game) and it has a turn based fighting system that I love, it is not like you just sit there and click the one attack you want to do run over to the enemy and hit them then run back to your place (I hate those lol) you do decide certain moves but you are fighting all the time doing moves and stuff you can put four moves in a line waiting to be used and once you are through doing one attack the other person attacks then you attack. It makes the combat faster than other RPG's I like that.
There are tons of mysteries and puzzles and in fact for one I had to ask my older sister to help me with because it was so hard (but don't worry there are online walk throughs to be sure =]).
as you play the things you do or say will attune you to the light or dark side of the force, for instance: you can walk up to a man who needs some money because he is poor and talk to him, then you can either say "here take 20 credits" or you could say "give me all your credits or I'll finish you misrable life for you!"
depending on which side of the force you are attuned to you can use light or dark side powers for less force points, so if you are high on the light side and you use heal, it will cost much less than if you were on the darkside thus you can use it more. But if you tried to use lightning while on the light side it will cost much more and you will not be able to use it as much.
the Character creation is very good as well, there are 3 classes you begin with gaurdian, sentinel, or consular you can be male or female with no affect on attributes. You can do quick Character and just pick your face and name or do the advanced one were you get to pick your attributes, skills, and feats.
the story is a long one that unravels itself at a good pace (not to fast or slow) with lot's of dialog on the force from you "master" Kreia.
And asks hard questions to answer such as: when you help someone are you really helping them? Or by helping them are you robing them of the experiance that could help them survive? Very interesting.
Also I liked the influence system, if you make decisions that one of your companions support then you will gain influence with them each person respects something different, some like wittyness, others like you to show respect for their privacy, some just like you being nice to them, others like cunning and deciet, and some like outright brutal slaughter.
The more influeance you get with a person the more they will reveal themselves to you and their past and what they think and feel. As some have said there is not a good romace plot in this one but that's suits me just fine because I think it is silly to have a fake romance with a computer =P and I didn't like having to tell bastila that I wasn't in love with her in the first one (because yes lol they are pretty realistic even that may sound silly to some).
I think that they should make another one, I am looking forward to a sequel if ever they make one. And that concludes my review I hope you learned something =].

I love this game!! I have played it over three times and every time it has got better than the last!!! I cant wait until kotor3 comes out. This game lets you choose your own path light, dark, neutral. It has new force powers, feats, weapons, levels, planets, characters, a new perstige feat, also influence which keeps the game interesting and fun. Some people think the end sucks, but that is becuase they dont get the story line. They have no idea what they are doing and they finish the game once and dont get it because they havent played the first one. Overall the game desearves 1000 stars!!! It is the best rpg game there is on the market!! No joke!! Buy this game you will love it!!!

This game is actually better than it's predecessor, despite the fact that it was a bit rushed on the market. I encountered several, (unacceptable in my opinion) bugs. Thanks to the latest patch 1.0b most of them are gone. While KOTOR had a great plot with a fair amount of twists, the game path was rather linear. KOTOR II offers a similar experience, but the story has more depth and the number of possibilities are greatly increased. The good graphics and superb voice acting contribute a lot in recreating the Star Wars Universe "look and feel". The AD&D rules are a bit simplified, yet the legacy is kept intact. It's one of my favorite games and I strongly recommend it to anyone. Only 4 out of 5 because of the stupid people who force release dates.

A lot of people discouraged me from buying this because "it isn't as good as the first one", but I definetely disagree. Not only was this game as good as Knights of the Old Republic I, in my opinion, it also had several new features, some of which include:
- An "Influence" system, where you gain or lose influence with your party members mostly through conversations. High influence makes them follow your Force aligment, and vice-versa.
- The ability to train some of your party members to become Jedi.
- Two weapon configurations that you can switch by pressing "H" (on the PC version), which allows you to switch from melee to ranged, or whatever you want, with the press of a button.
- New feats & force powers.
- The ability to gain a "presitge" level, meaning that if you start off as a Jedi Consular, you might want to get the prestige level of "Jedi Master", which has some of the same statistcs except approved. Basically, you are choosing a second class, just like in KOTOR 1, where you might start off as a Soldier and then become a Jedi Guardian. You gain this extra level at level 15, I believe.
There are other smaller features, but overall this game gives you much more variety and ease in your playing style.
The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars was because it has some minor glitches (one of which is introduced by the patch itself), but I managed to get past them by replacing my .ini file with a clean one.
All in all, I recommend this game to all KOTOR fans without second thought.

After I played through KOTR 3 or 4 times I really wanted more and I thought I would get that in KOTR 2. Well, I was not dissapointed for the most part.
The one major plus I have for this game is the story line is much more interesting than the 1st one. KOTR 1 was more of a traditional good Vs evil campaign. This much more in depth and really captures what the Star Wars world is all about. If this was made into a movie it would be a blockbuster. The whole idea behind this renduring is that you are a Jedi exile come back from the brink of death only to find all of the Jedi have been wiped out. You alone have to restore the Jedi order and its reputation to the galaxy ( light path ) or destroy the last bastions of Jedi pockets and gain total power for yourself ( dark path ). The storylines that intermix within those two paths is interesting and entertaining. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat just like I was watching a good movie, as I completed quests and furthered the story along. I grew fond of the characters and I felt the NPC's in this game were more colorful and realistic than the previous renduring. I do like the influence and character interaction matrix in this game. You can influence some characters and even raise them to Jedi and push them to a light path with you as a ultimate angelic heros, or you can pull them into the dark path with you and watch as they also turn into evil little misers killing and pillaging. This is a definate plus over the first KOTR where all the characters had their own agenda and you really couldn't do much with them. In this game you can manipulate and scheme to get the characters to walk light or dark. Overall, the plot and story make this game one for the record books. It is simply amazing and fun to watch.
BUT... unfortunatly there is a major downside. The game is almost unplayable as a program. The bugs and glitches in this software are nearly impossible to get past and ignore. Namely, there is two points in the game that if you accidentally trigger a certain console or destroy a wrong enemy, the game is impossible to end because of a software bug. Truly annoying and tragic for such a good plot. The game and quests are intermixed and so confusing that you find yourself reading your notes more than actually playing the game. There is also far too much busy work and too many skills to master. You find yourself wanting to gain a certain skill but the game doesn't allow the ample leveling up opportunities to get them. So you find yourself at the end of the game with several powers and feats left to waist. The game endlessly begs to be better but never truly attains the same playable and fun status that the first KOTR was. You find yourself having to go back to previous saves and re-do levels in order to get past unfixable bugs and glitches. That gets very annoying when you've spent 2 -3 hours completing a planet only to realize the game locks up because of bug and you have to go back and restart everything again. Nar shada is a great example of this. You have to do the quests in a certain order to gain the eye of the Exchange and get a meeting with Go-To, there is a bug in the system where even if you complete all the quests you end up on the dock waiting for a summons from Go-To that never comes. Then you have to literally go back to the begginning of the game almost and do it over again. Unfortunatly it puts the game in a big disadvantage since it could have been so great due to the story line.
Bottom line is that this game is a good thing to pick up and attempt to play but if you run into too many bugs I say trash it because the ending is not worth the effort. If your looking for something more after playing and replaying KOTR 1, this will serve as a temporary fix but after about an hour your ready to move on to another game. Basically, good story, good graphics, nice addition to gameplay, but nor worth the effort of playing through the bugs.

Before I start, just let me say that I loved the first game, one of the RPGs i really loved. I bought this game with very high hopes, thinking it would bring more gameplay and an even better plot. However, the gameplay is more or less just the same, and one of the best parts of KOTOR1, the plot, is much weaker. the plot twist at the end is relitively obvious, and not near as good as the first game. the gameplay is a little better then KOTOR I, but that doesnt do much to make up for the plot.
Plot specifics ( I wont give to much away)
The writers tried to simply explain away what happened to Reven, in a way that makes almost no sense at all. The driving force behind the main quest does not seem to be very powerful, and is pretty much contradicted by the ending. After fighting the games boss, you are left on a deadly planet with no ship, and no way off. it seems like you win the game and live the rest of your life sitting on a planet until you die.
Overall, though, this is a good game, and if you were a fan at all of its prequel, you will enjoy this game.

I have been playing KOTOR 2 for a week now and am every bit as addicted to it as I was to its predecessor. The game engine, graphics, and options are almost exactly the same as the first game, so anyone who played that one will have no trouble getting into this game right away. There are a few additions, such as various lightsaber forms and the ability to influence your party members' alignments to the light/dark side of the force. But overall it is very much the same game with a different storyline and set of characters. It is worth keeping in mind that this game was churned out only about one year after the the first KOTOR, which by itself had taken over three years to complete. Therefore, it is not surprising that this game does not have as much depth as the first. What IS surprising is that the storyline is still engrossing and the voice-acting is still top notch. Dialogue choices are even more diverse than in the first game, and sometimes you may have 7 or 8 different responses to choose from (a few of which made me laugh out loud). You can't go rushing through, though, because your choice of words can adversely impact the way your party feels toward you, and sometimes you can even talk your way out of (or into) a vicious battle.
If you couldn't stand to see the first game end, and have the patience to sit through tons of dialogue, then you should be pleased with the sequel. But if you were disappointed in any way by KOTOR, this game is not likely to change your mind. And if you didn't play the first one, don't even THINK about playing this one before you do, because it is a true sequel and you will be lost on the storyline right away.
I just want to add...be careful of the other reviews you read here on Amazon. Some people just can't help but be pathetic enough to spoil the entire storyline of this game, and then say things afterward like, "...you would have figured it out anyway...". I thought Amazon refused to print those types of reviews, but obviously not. What a shame.
