It'll make you jump, scream, and curse

This game deserves a spot in every Gamecube owner's collection. Capcom took its aging first installment in the Resident Evil series, spruced it up with photo-realistic graphics, new areas, and even better voice-acting, and released it to critical acclaim. It's a tense and addictive adventure, and one that begs to be played through until every secret is uncovered.

Of course, with repeated playthroughs the inherent flaws in the gameplay become more and more obvious. These aren't flaws that Capcom missed in the game's production, rather they're built directly into the game and have become a part of the Resident Evil experience. Your character controls like a human tank, stiffly and without much precision in movement or combat. Enemies that would be very easy to kill or avoid become absolute pains when you have to steer around them in tight hallways. The inventory and save system, which can only be accessed in select areas, forces you to make repeated trips for the necessary items and feels like a cheap way to extend playing time. These flaws are more appearant now that Resident Evil 4 has eliminated most of them.

Still, the trick with the Resident Evil games is to master the flaws, which can be overlooked in relation to the overall gaming experience. Definitely grab this one if you don't already have it, or snag the "Pure Evil" two-pack which also includes Resident Evil 0.

Great, but not for the kiddies - controls advice too

Just got my copy yesterday and I must admit - the graphics are gorgeous. This is one SCARY game - and for sure - not for little kids. Do you need to by 17 to play it? Probably not - but at least 14 or so for sure. One comment/critique on the controls - the default control layout (there are 3 control layouts: A, B and C) is very difficult. You push up to move the character forward no matter which way they are facing - it's not very intuitive and I found myself getting killed because I'd push right to make the character go right, when what I really needed to do was push UP to make them go forward - but since they were facing right, you're instinct is to push right. I found playing the control layout C made the game signifcantly easier and more enjoyable. Using this layout - the right shoulder button makes the character move forward - this is much more intuitive. No matter which way you are facing on the screen, all you have to do is press the right shoulder key and they move forward. Much better and it works. I'm surprised this wasn't set as the default layout - but I would recommend you change your control layout to C to enjoy the game to it's fullest.

Al fin un juego con calidad en graficos y lo suficientmente entretenido para el gamecube. La espera ha valido la pena. Creo que es un juego que envuelve mucho y es adictivo. Vale su precio. Es de colección.

An incredible remake of an incredible game

Well, Capcom shows once again that they know what they are doing when it comes to survival-horror games and this one does not disappoint. This game is basically a remake of the original classic Resident Evil game on the PS1, now with beautiful graphics and sound that really make it a must have for horror fans. Although I personally like this and the original about the same, they both need to be played in order to appreciate the series to its fullest. Every single part of this game is brillant and if you've some how managed to avoid the original or this one, then you really need to get them both. This is easily one of my favorite Gamecube games and I'm sure I'll enjoy it for years to come.

Graphical wonder, sensasual environments...scary as hell

Easily the scariest game created to date, Resident Evil will blow you away before you even put the disk into the system. From the first cutscene, you'll be on the edge of your seat. First, there is little music, which sometimes blares up only when a zombie pops up or something, adding a little extra scare.
I can go through the seperate aspects of the game:
Graphics
On a level from 1-10, 1 being the original pong, and 10 being...well, Resident Evil. Yes, RE is as good as it gets. I've yet to see a game with better graphics and texture designs. Simply amazing.

Sound
On a level from 1-10, 1 being beeps and blips, and 10 being a fully orchastrated symphonized game...like Super Smash Bros Melee, I give this game a 7.5. It looses points because it has little music, but excellent sound effects, from those creepy zombie moans, to a gentle wind blowing outside bring it right back up. Music is still there, but usually in creepy hallways or rooms with dangers.

Gameplay
On a scale from 1-10, 1 being like trying to move a logging truck with your own bare hands, and 10 being like the best amusment park you've ever been to, I give RE a 9. At first, it is fairly difficult to get used to, but eventually it gets smooth. The fights are good and intense, and the realism is there.

Lasting Appeal
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the game is over in 10 minutes, and 10 being that it takes you an entire year to finish, I rate this game a 10. First, it's great and long for those people, like me, who had never played RE before, and second, there is two people to play as, and third, there is some weapon and mode cheats to get different things to use.

Value
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being it costs a fortune to buy and keeps you amused for half an hour, and 10 being it barely dents your wallet, but keeps you playing for a loooong time, I rate this game a 9. It's cheaper than other cube games, and is a big 2 disc game. End of story.

Back in 1996 something special happened. The genre of video games now know as survival horror came into existance, and it's all thanks to one game, Resident Evil. The game capitivates you on a whole new level, in that it combines witt with force and plenty of strategy. This isn't your run of the mill shooter. This is a game that will involve your mind as much as your trigger finger. Having played through the original back in the day I welcomed the Gamecube remake with open arms, and take my word for it, it doesn't dissapoint. Graphics wise its hands down the best graphics ever achieved by any console game. No lie. Look at the game for yourself. Its like watching a finely tuned FMV playing throughout the whole game. It boggles the mind how much effort and attention to detail was put into making the atmosphere and characters lifelike. If you thought the original game was scary, then prepare yourself for an entirely new experience. Gameplay is supurb in my opinion. The controls are one thing most newbies will complain about, and while I'll admit they are awkward at first, they become second nature rather quickly. The story is simple, yet completely engrossing and the best of the series in my opinion (CV is a close second). By the end of the game you'll really feel like you know the characters, and have distinct feelings towards them all (Yea we all hate Wesker...) The voice acting is a superb bonus. Gone is the laughably bad dialoque from the original, replaced with more simple, but extremely better lines. This is also no simple remake guys. If you played the original back in hayday, you owe it to yourself to play this. The creators stripped down the original game, leaving only the basics in tact, and completely remade this masterpiece. Don't get to cocky if you're a veteran either, because RE will bite you in the ass with its new surprises. Considering that 40% of the game is brand new there's plenty of new areas to explore, and new puzzles to solve. So finaly I'll say this : I loved RE back in 1996, and now I loved playind this remake even more. If you have a gamecube this is a must own game. If you don't have a Gamecube, buy one anyway, if only just to play this. And Remeber, Fear can't kill you but....

The most spooky game ever! Gave me shivers!

Put the lights low or turn them off. Now listen as you creep along through the mansion. The wind howls, wooden floors creak, water drips in the bathroom, bugs crawl in the kitchen, moans come from around corners from people who just can't figure out their dead. Your heart pounds as you walk down dark hallways. You jump as a window breaks. The errie sound effects, terrific graphics, and the motion of the contoller all add to a truly scary game.

Playing this game is like living through the experience of a zombie movie. When I play this game I really do feel scared when I'm walking from room to room unlocking the secrets of the mansion.

This game has the right recipe for horror and suspense in a game.

I'm not sure about the replay value of the game as I am still trying to get through it as Jill and then I guess I can play over as Brad. However the first time through it is really scary.

Learning to move is a bit frustrating at first but after some practise it is second nature to me. I think the hardest part is turning and trying to stay parallel to a wall when running.

I am throughly enjoying this game. It has the same kind of fear factor of a roller coaster at an amusement park. You know you aren't in any real danger and get you are frightened anyways because your senses tell you "this is scary!" It does stimulate your senses; visually scary, audiably scary, and scary vibrations for touch.

I had to knock 1 star off this game. I wish you could save anytime you're at the typewriter and not need the ink ribbons. I mean come on! If I spend half an hour playing and then I need to take a break I don't want to be frustrated because I can't find a ribbon and have to lose my progress. GRRRR.

Other than the requirement to have ink ribbons to save the game I throughly love this game. :)

Jill has a nice booty.

This is a made-from-scratch remake of the original RE. Released for the 'Cube. It got much praise. This game is way better than the original. Why? Take a look!

GAMEPLAY: What great fun! This time, there are much more rooms in the mansion, and a lot more puzzles. And a new type a zombie: Crimson Heads. These guys can RUN! When you kill a zombie, eventually it will become a Crimson. To prevent that, either burn the zombie's body when you defeat it, or blow the zombie's head off. Another thing this game has is defensive items. If a zombie or another monster attacks, press L and your character will pull out a defensive item. One example is pulling out a dagger and stabbing the zombie in the head. Plus, there are a lot of unlockable costumes and different ways to play, depending on how you play, which adds to the replay value.

GRAPHICS: Holy crap. These graphics look REAL. Especially the lighting. The graphics add to the scares.

Voices: Remember in the original RE how the voices were horrible and cheesy? Not this time. The voices are pretty good actually.

Got a GameCube? Love RE? Then get this.

A Great game.

Resident Evil is an amazing game. It looks so realistic and is extremely fun. This gc version is way different than the PS version. It has new zombies new weapons and new rooms. The zombies look amazing. It is also very hard and you probably won't be able it to beat it without one. The only little flaw that I saw in this game was the controlls were a little hard to get into, but you'll eventually get into them. The games graphics are just to notch. Never in a game for any system have I seen graphics as good as this. This a must for your game library.
