Resident Evil 1 or RE-make as it is also known' is such a beauty of a game that any fan of the genre will love it.
Shinji Mikami, the father of the RE numerical series, produced his ultimate vision of the first chapter exclusively for GameCube. He wanted to bring the fear factor back to the saga and since he was the director of RE-make, he accomplished his goal pretty well.
If you think the remake for GC is just the same game with pretty graphics, well you be wrong my friend. RE-make has a lot of exclusive content (the new Crimsom Zombies, for one thing) and details concerning the history of the numerical series (The whole Lisa Trevor storyline). Plus you can pick up extra defense weapons to help you in the adventure.
Besides, the voice acting and the intro FMV is waaaay beyond the corny-cheesy stuff you saw in the original PSX versions. The plot is still campy, though.
This game is a must buy and if you're going to play Resident Evil Zero, I recommend you play RE-make first 'cos plotwise it is a lot better to do just that.
The game has nice extras like the usual but NEW costumes for the main characters plus a gallery of pre-production art and a special letter to the gamer from Shinji Mikami himself!!!!
But the best feature is that like I stated before, Shinji was able to bring back the fear to the series with this game. It's a scary and tense game. And that's something that in my opinion, is even better than just pretty visuals.
Graphics: Excellent! There is so much details in the character models. The pre-rendered backgrounds aren't static (photo-like) but are actually animated so that they look alive. Candles flicker, objects have shadows and there are reflections in windows and the wind makes the trees and grass move. The creatures have been re-vamped for this version. They look amazing. The cutscenes were made using a top japanese cinematographer, and the results are incredible. Very cinema-like.
Audio: The sounds of this game help create the illusion of real "life". The sounds your character makes walking on different surfaces or the sounds of the wind, only add to the effect of being in a real place. Some sounds like those of the fly-men (chimeras), are pretty disgusting. Especially after you kill them. They turn into a pile of maggots or something. Yuck!
Music: The music is a mixture of old tunes (from the original) and brand new tunes. For the most part, Shinji Mikami decided to keep the music to a minimum as to create more suspence in the gamer/user.
Replay value: The game has at least 12 endings and stuff to unlock like different game modes and difficulty levels to play in.
Control: The same old controls are here again. But on the GC control you don't exactly feel like driving a tank when controling your character. Not at all. There are three control sets to choose from. I stayed with the default setting, it just worked for me. And since I've been playing games for ages, the whole control thing never was an issue for me.
Overall, this is an excellent game and since this game is totally compatible with Nintendo's new game console (Wii), it will probably have a longer shelf life than most GC games. Mainly due to it's high grade quality.
When most people think of Super Smash Bros. Melee when they think of GameCube, Resident Evil or REmake, is proof that the purple cube has a lot of great games under it's belt.
Great SURVIVAL game, not action game

As someone who has fond memories of the original, I loved this game. It's a great remake of a classic.
Some people have complained about the lack of ammo and so forth - that's the point! How can it be a shock to any gamer that the old RE games require ammo conservation? That's like knowing Sonic is a Hedgehog, everybody does. I wonder if they even realize this is a remake of an old game.
I suppose Capcom could've increased the ammo in the remake to make the game more like RE4, but that would've made the game boring and easy (not that RE4 is either of those things, but it's a completely different kind of game), and it would've killed the suspense.
This is not a run-and-gun action game, this is a survival game. If you think that's going to frustrate you, don't buy it. If, on the other hand, you have good taste, buy it.
Survival Horror: Resurrected.

I have never been a fan of survival horror games, save for the first Resident Evil and the Silent Hill games. I own a Gamecube, and giving in to all the hype, decided to give Resident Evil a try. I can now see why everyone likes it.
For people who beat it before, there is a lot of familiar territory. Many of the puzzles are the same, with similar ways of solving them. I never actually beat the first one, but I got pretty far, so getting to where I was was not difficult. To be honest, the first few areas of the game are the toughest, after that, it gets easier.
The most noticeable improvement is in the graphics and sound. The mansion is very well detailed, and the music gives a constant feeling of dread throughout the game. The atmosphere is much more ominous on the Gamecube version. The candles cast ghostly flickers, the hollow sounds of your footsteps echo throughout the mansion, and perhaps most frightening of all, the zombies sound more life-like. Their moaning and chewing (on you) is all amplified to add to the realism. For those who think the Gamecube is a kiddie system, just look at the amount of glood and guts in this game and think again. The control is vastly improved, thanks to the design of the Gamecube's controller. It still takes a while to get used to, but the controller is more responsive than the Playstation's was. I found navigating the mansion to be easier. Also a vast improvement over the Playstation version is the load times, which are much faster on the Gamecube. For those who recall, the load times on the Playstation version could be excruciating.
The only real flaw is the fact that I got stuck in several places. I am a very apt player, so it is not that the puzzles are too tough. I found myself backtracking to find items I overlooked. This is not only frustrating, but time consuming. While RE is easier than Silent Hill or Eternal Darkness, there is still that frustrating trial and error gameplay. This was the biggest problem with Resident Evil 2 for PSX, which had be looking around for hours for something I missed.
I was very suprised with the Gamecube translation, which is miles ahead of any of the earlier Resident Evil games. And with the new ones on the way, and Eternal Darkness already here, the Gamecube is looking to be a good choice for Survival Horror fans. Once you play this version, you will not be able to go back to the original.

I just got my import of Biohazard (Resident Evil) today and I must say it is nothing short of astonishing. The detail will amaze. I guarantee the first time you see this baby in action your jaw will drop. This has always been my favorite in the series, but it has never looked this good. I do say Capcom has outdone themselves, now I can't wait for the others especially Zero and 4. I highly recommend this game it is well worth your [$$$].

Oh it may be a remake from PSX's Resident Evil but this one is absolutely incredible! You are able to play as rough Chris Redfield and smart Jill Valentine. The graphics are beautiful and really well detailed so it lokks like you took it out from a movie. The sound is amazing and you could hear every slash of your knife and every sound of you footstep. Its super scary andwith hard puzzles and zombies and monsters with a high AI. This is a game you MUST buy!!!!
Good graphics and sound.....

Shame about the rest. I picked this game up eagerly expecting something to blow me away. What I got was a slow moving, badly controlled character who cannot move and shoot (thus leaving her open to easy attack). This game is based purely on hype. People, get over it. Unless you are shallow enough to be swallowed in by the reviewers bought opinions (how could anyone find this scary? Tedious, yes, scary - hell no) there is absolutely nothing to offer in gameplay terms. Save your money.

First off I'd like to say that I have played every Resident evil made, and this remake of a classic game and much much more. Resident Evil has the BEST Graphics ever made on any system. If you've ever played Code: Veronica, you may think that game had great graphics, but you will literaly be caught drooling at the eye candies of this game. Capcom wanted to make this an all new experence, so if you ever played the orignal, you won't be able to recognize almost anything because rufly 90% of the game is brand spanking new and 70% of the puzzels are also brand new. So do yourself a favor, if you haven't got a Gamecube, get it for this reason go and buy this game.
FUN.......BUT WAY SCARY!

IF YOU LIKE SCARY, YOU'LL LIKE RESIDENT EVIL
RE, I swear, is the scariest game I have ever experienced. It is a very graphic, yet pleasurably frightening survival-horror, fitted especially for the Nintendo GameCube and PS2 systems. It takes place in Racoon City, where numerous reports took place about familys acroos the countryside being victims of flesh-eating zombies. You are either Chris Redfeild, or Jill Valentine. Investigate the zombie invested mansion at the center of Racoon City, and discover things that were not meant to be seen by human eyes... best played with the lights turned off!
LIVE THE NIGHTMARE IN YOUR OWN BEDROOM!
This game includes the following frightenening positives:
*100% Magnificent Graphics.
*Game Controls are easy to follow.
*Oustanding special effects and character designing.
*Tons of blood and gore, and an incredible amount of suspense.
*Special features and unique game settings.
*JUST THE BEST DARN VIDEO GAME EVER CREATED!

Well gee, I don't seem to have problems with the controls. I guess some people's hand-eye coordination isn't quite up to par.
