The Ultimate Horror game for any console

Resident Evil is of that unique style that really brings you right into the game. The scary atmosphere will have you biting your nails within the first few minutes into the opening cutscene. The graphics in this game are amazing, to give them a 10/10 is an understatement. As you walk through the mansion you will grow to appreciate the spectacular lighting effects, dust kicking up off the floor as you run and the beautifully designed undead bearing down on you. The musical score also helps set the mood for this ultimate experience. I give the music and sound effects a 9/10. For all of those who played the old Resident Evil on Ps should definately pick this up for I assure you there will be no dissapointment. In this new remake there are new extra modes such as invisible enemies, The kamikaze zombie feature and the back breaking real survior mode. Resident Evil has large amounts of staying power. The game contains multiple endings, special weapons and outfits for character can be won for beating the game on acertain difficulty mode. The new Resident Evil is gonna make your forehead water with cold sweat. Just remember that in this game that if fear dosen't kill you something else will.

I am just getting to the poing where I feel comfortable playing alone in a dark house. This game is sooo scary, and its not a playstation repeat. With highly detailed graphics, real time lighting and enough sound to add effect to any movie, its the best game made for nintendo. Lets start with the graphics, the characters are super detailed, you can see the dust fall off of the zombies faces. The environent is like real life, grass on the outside is green with brown tips, you can see a chandelear rock in the shadow of light, very clear. Ths sound is on a different level, you can hear a zombie from around the corner and the closer he gets the louder it gets. For some reason the zombies can bust open the doors, so you cant just lock them up and run away believe me you will be doing a lot of that. This game also has high repaly simply because of alternate endings. So if youre considering buying this game you have the above reasons to end your debate and BUY IT.

When I first heard of Resident Evil, I played it on my friend's PlayStation (having never owned one myself). I really enjoyed the promise that this new genre brought with it, though I was less than impressed with the graphics and how long it took to load. I never finished the game. I think I played about a third of it. Fast forward to 2002. I own a GameCube and want a new game. Reading reviews, I decide to give RE a try once again. There aren't enough words to describe how much better this game now looks and plays. I really is scary. The graphics and sound really are fantastic, and the mood that is set by the whole thing keeps you tense until the end. I can't wait for the sequel. The only downside is that it is really straitforward, and you probably won't want to play it more than once. The extra modes that are unlockable were not enticing enough to make me play through a second time. Anyway... if you need to be swayed into buying this title... this is a definite push in the yes direction.

Will you survive the nightmare?

Raccoon City, 1998 - S.T.A.R.S. is sent to the Arklay Mountains, northwest Raccoon City, because many witnesses said that strange things were attacking people from the mountains. The first team sent, the Bravo Team, disappeared, contact was lost. The other team who stood there, the Alpha Team, got worried, and went to the mountains to find them, but they didn't find. They just found some hungry dogs. Unfortunately, one of them ate one of the team members, Joseph Frost. The rest of the team ran into a house, looking like a mansion. The first thing they notice is that someone is missing, someone is out there. They decided to stay in the mansion, but they didn't know that the mansion was way more dangerous than outside.

- Graphics: This game is different from everything. While I was playing, nobody thought it was a game. "What movie are you watching?".
- Controller: It's not that difficult to use, but I prefer using the + Control Pad than the normal Control Pad, it's easier. But it's not hard to use the Control Stick...
- Fun: It depends of you... It has heads exploding, scary things... It has some puzzles and can really scare you. If you like fear, then you'll think it's fun... And there's also some good "extras" when you finish the game, such as clothes, new modes...
- Educative: Huh... It depends also... It's not the BEST game children could play because of the violence, blood and words like "...." and ".....". But if your kids like horror and you don't really think bad words would make any difference (just like I do), it's fine. By the way, you're killing zombies and monsters for a good cause, you're trying to save Raccoon City from them. If you kill one, this one won't kill anymore (well, it's true, some of the dead zombies come back...).
- Durability: If you're talking about the package, it's fine... The GameCube games have great package. This game has 2 Mini-DVDs, and there are spaces for both plus a space for a GameCube Memory Card (it's not included in the game, of course). There is also a booklet explaining things about the commands, characters...

It IS a good game, no doubt... If you own a GameCube, it's a "must-have" game.

I just recommend you to lock your doors.

Resident Evil(2002). The Gamecube remake of the classic 1996 survival horror game for the PS1.

Reworking older video games can be a very risky move on the part of Game companies, especially if the originals are considered by the fans to be highly regarded classics. Sometimes the remake turns out to be a major success and outshines the original. Just look at Super Castlevania 4 (SNES remake of the first Castlevania game) and the new Prince Of Persia games for prime examples of what to do right. Then there are the ones that end up ruining the franchise and disgracing the originals (I refer you to the legions of Tomb Raider sequels and 3D Contra games). Now this isn't the first time that Capcom has done remakes. In fact, they're quite notorious for it. This goes back to their SNES days when countless "Special Edition Turbo Alpha X" releases of Street Fighter 2 had seen the light of day, showcasing very miniscule improvements over the previous releases. Now we have Nintendo Gamecube reworking the classic RE1. Can they truly succeed in actually "rebuilding" a game where all the other director's cuts and annual editions failed, or will it disappoint like the others?

I've been a HUGE fan of the Resident Evil games since I first played RE2 upon its release in 1998, and have come to enjoy most all of the other games in the series. With this new version of the original I had low expectations of them actually redoing the game, but thankfully I was pleasantly SHOCKED beyond belief at how well crafted the game is now! I'd go so far as to say that it certainly beats out RE3 and Code Veronica for sure and even much of RE2 (my favorite one!), though RE4 is still the best game in the series. They basically took everything that was good about the original game and got rid of (nearly) all the bad and cheesy parts and produced a genuinely solid RE entry. I'm going to spend the review going over the changes between the original and the remake, and since the basic story and play mechanics are identical between both of the games, go read my PS1 "Resident Evil: Director's Cut" review for most of the game info.

The first thing anyone will notice are the Graphics. WOW do they ever look detailed and creepy now! Easily the best looking RE game up to that point. It puts the blocky, bland Scooby Doo-esque visuals of the original to shame (no offense to any Scooby Doo fans out there). Most locations have been faithfully kept the same in size and location, yet the look of each place has been effectively redesigned to achieve maximum eerieness. In fact, the in game visuals look so good that the CG movies seem almost EXACTLY alike. Water and blood reflects and flows fluidly, zombies and other monsters look gorily disgusting now, and Characters show genuine expressions. They even took note on the cult success of the PS2 Silent Hill games and opted to reinvent RE's scare factor through grittiness and effective shadowing. There is a lot more graphic blood this time, which is a major shock considering this is a Nintendo game (I have a huge rant about Nintendo and its censorship tendencies, but I'll spare it for now). Not even the most die-hard oldschool gamer can scoff at the amazing graphics.

Of course none of this brilliant eye candy would mean anything if the game were no fun to play. I'm happy to report that RE is still the same fun survival horror game, controls, and camera angles (love them or hate them, your pick). It was cleverly built so that new fans can pick up and enjoy the game, but veteran fans of the original can also still get the most out of it. Scare spots, items, boss locations, and other factors have been changed, so it isn't the exact same game as before. Another thing that older fans will immediately notice is that there are now new locations and puzzles that blend in with all the old. This makes the game even bigger than the original already was.

Other cool gameplay additions are the defense weapons and the "Crimson Head" zombies, which come to life after you dispose of normal zombies. This adds a new scare factor and strategic element to the existing gameplay formula, and forces you to think about what you're doing. That other new "chained thing" was VERY CREEPY as well and reminded me a lot of the Silent Hill games. There are many modes to unlock after you beat the game, and each one is quite different, so I'll leave you to discover those.

The newly arranged soundtrack builds vastly on the original's and it effectively compliments the scary visuals. Then there's the voice acting... MUCH BETTER PEOPLE THIS TIME. Though all of the general dialogue has been kept the same, the characters are all A LOT MORE BELIEVEABLE, and just about every line has been changed for the better. There are a couple of exceptions, such as when Jill gets the lockpick from Barry, and also the part near the end when Chris gets really ticked off at Wesker. But sometimes you can't get rid of goofy parts without changing them completely. Oh well. This small quibble is the game's only downpoint.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the remake, and I recommend this one over the original anyday (still, it's worth digging up to hear all the hilarious dialogue!) 5 stars hands down. Some have stated that RE2 and RE3 need to be remade like this one, but the look, atmosphere, and voice acting were so much better in those ones that they don't really need it (although in RE4 seeing Leon in the unlockable RPD uniform from RE2 kinda makes you wonder...). This game is solid proof that sometimes a remake can rebuild your view of an older game for the better.

This is a good one

I have been awaiting the remake of my beloved Resident Evil for PSOne for quite some time now. And I have to say the results are decidedly mixed. While the graphics are the best for any system ever, the character models are stunningly realistic, and the environments are staggering in their detail, but for all this something is missing. Probably a little restraint on Capcoms part. The first Resident Evil for PSOne slowly unwinded a story that sucked me in even with the horrendous acting and dialogue. The mansion was a disturbing place, the whole situation was a nightmare come true. Now with the GC version, it seems Capcom really wants to scare you, but they show you way too much. The coffin room is probably the best example, for all the dancing lights and shadows, it just isn't scary, its just overwrought and tries too hard. Another example is the painfully pathetic "Lisa" character, I mean as you slowly realize the extent of her story, it just gets a little gratuitously disgusting for its own good. But now I'll get to the good parts, the labs from the first game hae been substantially overhauled, its nice to see, I was never convinced that an operation of the size that was presented was ever possible with the facilites present, but now I'm convinced. The most mind-blowing part of the game is the "Aqua-Ring" that part of the game on PSOne seemed like a tacked on afterthought, but here is becomes its own beast. But as I was saying, for all of the cosmetic changes, theres something missing, it just isn't frightening at all, seeing the snake and even tyrant in their higher polygon counts and high-resolution texture glory was an anti-climax to say the least. But still, most fans of the game should enjoy it, I'm just saying I was disappointed.

Great, but, THOSE DARN CONTROLS!!!

I bought this game yesterday out of curiosity. A kid said his mom would'nt let him have so I decided to find out what Evil Resident was all about.

The mini movie at the beginning is awesom! With the graphics, sound effects, and realism employed througout this game Nintendo has set a NEW STANDARD!

This game is extremely SCARY! I would not advise a parent to get this for any child under 16 because of the realistic violence and gore! I'm an adult, and this game just scares the HECK out of me--especially while playing it on surround sound at 2 o'clock at night! The music, the sound effects, the shawdows, and every other eerrie thing you can think of is all there!

This is the first Evil Resident game I have played, and the only flaw that I struggling with (which is why I'm not giving this game 5 stars) are the CONTROLS! Capcom and Nintendo should come up with a much better interface scheme because at the most vital moments when you've got CLAWED ZOMBIES trying to rip your head off, your often stuck fighting with the CONTROLS! HOW FRUSTRATING!

All-n-all, this is a very good game for the MATURE, but if your not willing to put time into learning how to work the CONTROLS--FORGET ABOUT THIS ONE! YOU'LL NEVER BEAT IT! The CONTROLS for this game have a definate learning curve. And the perpectives and camera angles also leaves much to be desired at times.

And last, it would'nt be a bad idea to buy a PLAYERS GUIDE if your not a HARDCORD GAMER. There's a lot going on in this game that's critical to your survival and I feel having a players guide will enhance your playing experience, and EASE THE PAIN in beating this realativly HARD game.

Creepy, but slow: caution if RE4 (Wii) was your first RE experience

RE4 was one of the first games I played for Wii. It was also the first Resident Evil game I had played (I do not own a gamecube).
RE4 is extremely different from RE for gamecube.

RE4:
- better graphics
- more "shoot 'em up" style: tons of ammo, more killing, less walking around lost
- save whenever there's a typewriter
- you do not need a walkthrough, ever, if you are willing to spend 5 minutes to figure something out
- you can hold lots of weapons, herbs (health), and ammo.
- There is currency. You can upgrade and buy weapons from a merchant.
- fun (especially Wii version)

RE1:
- good graphics for its time; bad for the modern game
- you have to collect "ink ribbons" if you want to save. While generally there is a sufficient amount, it takes up space (see following bullet)
- conserve your ammo! walkthroughs suggest that you run past most zombies to conserve ammo. Also, you only have 6 spots, 8 with the girl to hold stuff. 6 spots is not enough. Sure, it makes it challenging, but soon it's annoying. 1 spot for handgun, 1 spot for handgun ammo, 1 spot for special item, 1 spot for herb, 1 spot for other gun, etc. it gets crowded, quickly.
- Creepy. All the walking around in the dark mansion makes it creepy, yes. And if you favor those kind of games instead of your standard HL shooter game, then by all means get it.

Remember Tha First One!
