Biggest Disappointment in a Long Time

I really feel like I wasted my money buying this game.

MOH Frontline has been for over a year one of the few video games I actually love. Even after passing it on all three levels, I just keep returning to it again and again for nothing more than the thrill of the gameplay. It was filled with strategy and realism....and it was rather entertaining as well. The Nazis were quite amusing to watch and the sets were also great fun just to walk around in and experience. Even after a full year of playing, I still throw it into my console and have a go whenever I feel the urge.

So I waited and waited for Rising Sun....here I though it would be as good or better than Frontline. Boy was I wrong.

Within 4 hours I had finished the game. 4 hours! I paid fifty bucks for this game to finish it in 4 hours.....and worse....not have any interest at all in going back to unlock any bonus items or to challenge it at the hard level.

Why?

Well because all you do is just shoot people....and believe me, unlike the Nazis these soldiers are plain stupid. You feel like Rambo, simply massacring hundreds of Japanese as if you're invincible. And talk about extra health packs....I may have died a total of 5 or 6 times completing this whole game because for what little I was shot, I was able to gain back full health constantly. I left more than a fair share of health packs behind. In Frontline, conserving those health packs is integral to completing the missions...in Rising Sun they're just there more for decoration it seems.

Speaking of decoration, what happened to the graphics? Frontline's graphics are far better.

There are no outstanding puzzles or strategies to accomplish....no need to use your brain at all as in Frontline. You simply keep on moving forward massacring Japanese soldiers. It just keeps going and going like this.

I found myself wanting to complete the missions more as a chore than a pleasure. I kept hoping I would get to the next mission and the game would take off and start being more fun.

But no....after destroying an aircraft carrier the credits began rolling. My jaw dropped. That was it? Yes it was. That was it. The whole game in about 4 hours....and the only part I mildly enjoyed was shooting down Zeros.

Even the end sequence is lame...you just watch a carrier blow up and then the credits roll. Are they kidding? Completely anti-climactic.

There is only one thing that is new with this game....you get to shoot down aircraft. Oh, and you ride an elephant. Big deal. The weapons are boring as hell, you never get to use too many of them at once. Then they add this "feature" of being able to toss grenades with a seperate button. That seemed good at first, until you realize that unlike in Frontline, where you get to cook the grenade, as well as to vary how long you hold down the fire button in order to determine the distance of your toss, you only have two choices: a short throw and a long throw. And that's it. The grenades in this game are not at all as fun as in Frontline.

And then there's the AI. Or lack thereof. The Japanese soldiers are boring as hell....all they do is shoot at you, and run up at you. At first you think, "Wow, this is so cool! I can't wait to see what else they'll do." But they don't. They just keep doing the same brainless attack. In fact, this whole game is spent waiting for it to get interesting, and then....well then it's over.

Don't waste your money. Rent this game and see what I mean.

If you already have Frontline, then you have no need to buy this waste of DVD space.

And yet...here's the real kicker....this game is only halfway completed: They're planning a sequel for it next year.

Well hats of to EA Games for being able to release a half-length game at a full length price! Don't give them the satisfaction.

Great, but where's the rest of it?

As a fan of the MOH series (dating back to the 2 games produced for PSOne), this was definitely a game I couldn't wait to play.

The problem was that I finished it in about a week (about 8 hours total).

Some of the other reviewers have mentioned that Frontline is a longer game (19 levels vs 10 here), and I would add also a tougher game.

Rising Sun begins with you aboard a US battleship in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and immediately puts you in the fray (as Frontline did with the storming of the beaches at Normandy). This first level is almost tutorial, giving you a chance to get a feel for the game without really taking any damage. I found the second board visually stunning with the planes swooping down around you, but after that, the other boards are just OK.

While the boards are longer, it felt like there were fewer enemies to fight. I'm not exactly a true "gamer", but I don't remember really having any trouble. In fairness, part of cruising through this game may be due to the fact that there are mid-level saves in Rising Sun, which is a feature new to the MOH series.

Conclusion? It's a game worth playing, but...if you haven't played Medal of Honor Frontline, buy that one first. And if you are a fan of the MOH series and finished Frontline, you may want to just rent Rising Sun.

I am a huge MOH follower but this game is nothing short of a rip off. First of all it is too short I finished in one weekend, the graphics leave a lot to be desired with dead soldiers that seem to float. This game would have been worth $19.99 but at anything over that it is a rip-off

A let down after Frontline

I'm not a big FPS games fan, but I got hooked on to MOH Frontline which I thoroughly enjoyed. So I bought MOH Rising Sun expecting it to be even better...what a let down it was! The game was way too easy and when it abruptly came to an end, I was very disappointed. The storyline and missions are not bad, but the level of difficulty and the dumb soldiers are ridiculous. The graphics are mediocre. In the single-player missions your comrades sometimes get in between you and the enemy, and your enemy can still shoot at you but you can't! I think two pluses for this game - it now costs only 15 bucks or so, and the game has save points all along the various missions (a big improvement over Frontline).

I'd like to defend the others who reviewed this game before it has come out. We have Medal of Honor Frontline for the Playstation 2 and it is one of the best games I have ever seen. The attention to detail is amazing. Even the background music is big screen movie quality. It is a fantastic game and I'm not even a fan of first person shooters. I will definitely be buying Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. If it's half as good as the previous Medal of Honor it will be awesome. If people are giving it five stars before it comes out it's based on their experience of previous Medal of Honor games.

EA SPORTS took a lunch break on this one...

Of course I began my quest of purchasing this game by first briefing myself with reviews. One idea was coming here, (thank you Amazon.com). As I read customer reviews, I began to question myself about actually buying it. Some people expressed a disappointment in the designers and others have just said, "It's a damn good game, just play it." I soon realized that I was in desperate need to test the game first before buying it (ok, so I WAS a big Medal of Honor: Frontline fan).

After coming home that very night of renting it, boy was I glad it was only a weekly rental for it had only taken me a little over 6 hours of finger taping frustration to finish the game. Yeah, that end sequence about taking off a Japanese carrier that everyone is fussing about, it's a whammy. At first, I didn't know if the guy was drunk, or just circling around the ship pretending not to know how to fly the plane. And then when my TV displayed "Medal of Honor", I was sure that there was a reasonable explanation to why the credits where floating down my screen. Well you know what Electronic Arts, I really hope that you forgot to put the second half of the war on the c.d. because you can count on me to decline the game even if its was lowered to 1 dollar. People, I am not an avid game player. For that matter I rarely play any of my games but when a guy like me can walk down to the basement, pop in the game and complete it in less then half the night then someone is asking for a big apology. Where are the real battles? Midway, kamikazes, all the fighting in the Pacific and most importantly, D-DAY! This game was a big disappointment with not only the locations but also the game play. If you're going to pick a couple of battles, then for God's sake don't pick all the damn jungles! The graphics in this game were absolutely terrible, considering the people who were speaking barely moved their lips. It was almost as if it were an anime film.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I am not trying to degrade MOH: Rising Sun to a pulp. It was a reasonable game to buy at a reasonable price. I myself just would not get it. Its graphics were dirt poor and the locations were horribly constructed for every movement was limited to following one way, forward. The weapons were a nice reminder of the genuine ones from the real war and the game gives a great sense of how brutal the Japanese were and it does a great job to inspire you to "keep on trucking," but the ending sequence left me with a lot of unanswered questions. The biggest disappointment to me was the absence of D-Day. Find out for yourself.

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is the newest game in a series of games that have won respect for the title "Medal of Honor." MoH:RS, however, fails to lives up to the previous titles of the series. The good things, however, I will touch on first.

There are several new features in MoH:RS that ensure to make the game a lot more fun. Co-Op mode is a completely new add-on to the Medal of Honor series. I am happy to see the multiplayer now back on Playstation 2 as well. There is also the addition of the online multiplayer too. The online multiplayer isn't the greatest, compared to titles like SOCOM II. It lacks variety as there are only two game types: Deathmatch and Team deathmatch. From what I have seen the online mode is a little unstable right now and lag is common. The Headset feature is a nice little addon, but fails in comparison to that of SOCOM II and resembles some of the lagged chopiness of SOCOM I. MoH:RS features a nice little library of special features for those who have unlocked them all.

The single player in this game is lackluster. I do have to say, the textures and detail on the weapons was excellent, but the environment was poor. There was hardly any detail put into the plants and most looked like green triangles and things of the sort. The single player is far too short, and hopefully things will be followed up by the release of MoH: Infiltrator (the second part of this 2 part series). The interactivity in the environments has also disappeared as well. You can no longer break plates by shooting them in this game, nor can you send a flood of steam into the room by shooting a pipe as could you in Frontline. The gun variety in this game is also poor, leaving you with the same basic guns for almost the entire game. Only two Japanese weapons are incorporated into this gamed, vs. the 4 or 5 German weapons in Frontline. The levels also lack variety, placing you in the middle of a jungle for most of the game (now this could be argued against because this is in the Pacific). The music score in this game is good, but still does not live up to Frontline (mostly due to the change of composers). However, the single player does offer a good insight into the war of the Pacific, and with the Letters from Home feature you can see what WWII was like on the homefront.

If you are a big MoH fan, I suggest you get this game. It is an ok game for what it's worth, so renting the game first would be my reccomendation. However, if you're looking for a great, in-depth FPS, you came to the wrong side of Chinatown.

I can't even express how hugely disappointed I am with this game, I don't even know where to start. For one thing it's total crap in comparison to Frontline. It's way too short (I've had for a little more than a week and have beat it on normal and hard), it's too easy (set at 'hard' is about as difficult as playing Halo on 'easy'), the AI is incredibly stupid, the design of the levels is just silly and there is no freedom of action (it resorts to invisible walls in the jungle if you try to go somewhere the game doesn't want you to). Not only is this game devoid of any improvements or original ideas they left out some of the better features of Frontline. Do not buy this game, you can rent it for a weekend if you must, that will be plenty of time to play all the way through it. BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

DEFINETELY COOL

First things first...this game came out on the 12th in regular stores, not the 14th on amazon! I purchased it on the 12th, and have played it non-stop. This game is totally awesome! It starts off with the attack on pearl harbor. After successfully traveling through a maze of hallways, you find yourself on the deck of the ship watching a short slow-mo clip of the destruction, and then using your B.A.R and various mounted machine guns to shoot down those dasterdly japanese airplanes. You then take control of a P.T. boat with a rear mounted double-barrel .50 caliber machine gun. (DROOLING YET?) After that, you go on various missions on foot. You are usually accompanied by several of your fellow soldiers, and use a variety of weapons. Ranging from the trusty M1 Garand, the B.A.R., the Thompson and replacing the Colt .45 is the M1911. The A.I. is dramatically improved, and not only do your fellow troops actually kill people, but the enemy is somewhat challenging to kill as well. The single player alone is enough to pay the hefty $50.00 price tag, but you also get co-op mode(YOU GOTTA BE DROOLING BY NOW), multiplayer, and online paly...OH YEAHHHH!! Any fans of wartime games, fans of MOH: Frontline, and all FPS fans in general owe it to themselves to check-out this incredibly detailed, interactive, exciting, and overall fun game.

What the hell was THIS CRAP? DON'T BUY THIS GAME!

Wow, just when you think videogame programmers can't get anymore lame...trash like THIS is made. Lets make something loud and clear in regards to this game.

It's STUPID!

Enemy A.I. : THERE IS NO A.I.! You can shoot at the Japanese soldiers from hundreds of yards away, and they'll just stand there and take it like morons. Looking around, and doing NOTHING. NEVER worry about losing this game, if you have a sniper rifle and alot of bullets because the limit of intelligence that is needed, is lining up the cross hairs to the enemies head while they sit there. Aim. And fire.

Graphics : Disgusting. These graphics are no where near as good as MOHFL. Why is it, that there is no blood in these games? Some deeper kind of appreciation or does it want to appeal to preteens who's parents won't get mad if theres no brain, or gut splatter? Lets be honest, war is ugly. If you're going to make a game on war, the ugliest details of war should be included. WHICH IS WHY THIS GAME SHOULD BE RATED FOR 17 AND OLDER. The graphics are 2D sprigs of bush that look absolutely fake, no realism. Quickly play through the first 3 levels of Allied Assault and kill some Nazi's. Then watch their movements as they die. THE JAPANESE MOVE AND DIE, AND SWAY TO THE GROUND IN THE EXACT SAME WAY.

Thats of course unless they don't decide to rush you with their bayonettes. Which was actually quite cool in this game.

The throwing of grenades leaves tiny "piffs" of explosions in which the enemy is never thrown back. They simply sway back and forth like they've been hit by a cartoon anvil...and then fall dead.

The only thing I liked (which never happened often) was when you shot their leg, and then their chest..and you got their bodies to flip back to the ground.

Another hint at realism. Why do these Japanese soldiers die, when you shoot their gun from around a corner? Has their weapon become a limb?

Storyline : Wow, well what can you say about this storyline? Oh yeah, thats right...there is none. After the first few minutes into this garbage...you realize that you need to be drugged on valium to enjoy this. You're basically told where to go...and then you do what it is you do best. Blow things up and shoot at moving targets that rarely shoot back.

Give me Halo A.I...this game blowed.

Historical Accuracy : Lets make sure everybody knows, that this game is completely fiction on most parts. Yet the "slang" used such as "Japs" was kept in the game. They want to make a game on realism, yet they have no blood or gore of any kind. They want a game on realism, yet they want you to believe that soldiers don't shoot back from far distances. These creators want REALISM in a game...in which they leave racial slang like "Japs" in...while completely forgetting specific events that brought about the war in the Pacific.

Why is it, that two, or three bullets in the very beginning of the game (Pearl Harbor) could take down enemy plains? Were the japanese flying in on paper kites? COME ON.

The entire beginning is scripted more like a cinematic movie...then any real game play.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure you think I've rambled enough. RENT this game. You can beat it in about 4 hours of non-stop play.

The ending leaves on a cliffhanger in which you know that theres going to be another MOH : Rising Sun to sort things out.

But after this crap, jungles which you can't explore. Predetermined paths...and nothing that makes you want to play this again.......I hate the series now
