Another Medal of Honor, but with Pearl Harbor this time!! WOW. This is going to be unbelievable. Months and months of anticipation goes by. Talk about being dissapointed.
Although Rising Sun offers some new weapons and adventures over Frontline, the involvement, strategy and intensity is completely lacking.
I am not a professional game player as evidenced by me still trying to finish Frontline on hard level. But therein lies the key difference. I still enjoy playing Frontline whereas Rising Sun seemed to be more of a chore to just get it over with.
Forget about challenging yourself as there is only one difficulty level (easy is my guess). This game plays as a first person shooter and nothing else. If you like an all out gun assault on the enemy, here's your game. Japanese soldiers are completely stupid and either stand still when you're 3 feet away or run at you full speed. Feel free to shoot at him as much as you want and ammo is EVERYWHERE. Get sliced in half from his muchetti? No problem. Health can be found every 20 feet. I believe I died 4 times while completing this whole game. While I'm complaining, you should also know that the grenade button was changed. Ultra annoying because I found myself dropping grenades instead of switching weapons. There is also no throw control.
One the plus side, I realy did enjoy that you can play two player and team up with someone. That was really cool and a nice addition over Frontline (minus the new simplicity and abbreviated boards). When is this going X Box Live?
As mentioned, I still have yet to see the ending for Frontline, but I'm sure it's more interesting than this anticlimatic ending. You easily sink an aircraft carrier and you're done. I remember saying out loud, "That's it? What a waste."
So overall, we have a great concept, good graphics, new storyboard, but left me completely empty - like eating an appetizer and then just leaving.
I hate that my brother spent his hard earned money on this for me on Christmas.
this game really is awesome

This truly is an amazing game. When i got it for my birthday, i wasnt sure how it was going to turn out. To my surprise, the game was amazing.
This is not an easy game by any means. Sure the first level or so was a sinch, but after that the game grows extremely intense and gets pretty hard. You are on the edge of your seat the entire time, constantly looking around for the Japanese who may suddenly surprise attack you.
It is really neat to do missions with other allied soldiers helping you. You feel the need to protect them because they are helping to keep you alive. The missions are incredible as well. Some of the objectives are unbelievably fascinating. There is one when you are in singapore where you destroy a german guys car, steal his outfit, fight your way to a hotel, pretend that you are this high powered german official and sneak your way into a top secret japanese meeting. Some of the missions are very long, but there are checkpoints along the way where you can save the game so that you dont have to go all the way back to the beginning if you die.
In response to what that kyle person wrote: NO, of course D-day isnt going to be in this game. DUH! that was when the allies invaded Europe. you obviously dont know what you are talking about and people should not listen to a word that he said. This game is awesome. The graphics are great, the sound is great, and the gameplay is amazing. A must have for any playstation 2 player!!!

Medal of honor the rising sun is by far 10 times better than medal of honor frontline. Don't get me wrong, that game was fun but had problems. In the Rising sun they improved the game , and fixed all the problems. BUY THIS GAME
Could be better than what we got.

Medal of Honor Rising Sun is not exactly what you'd expect from the MOH franchise. In fact, compared to previous installments this one is dangerously weak in a few departments. The game has it's highs and lows and while the PS2 has online play, that doesn't make it much better than the other platforms.
To begin, the graphics aren't up to date with today's current standards. Just as simple as maybe two years ago these graphics would be a little better but the fact that the layout of levels is dismal and not much color and texture went into the landscapes is a little disappointing. If you ignore the environments and such, the graphics of say...the characters or the weapons don't look that bad, in fact they're decent but looking at some of the landscapes made me feel like I was playing my outdated PSX again.
The music in this game, however, is top-notch and doesn't sound that different from other Medal of Honor games. So the soundtrack is outstanding! Sound effects are great too. Gunshots sound good and the voice acting isn't bad. So sound is certainly a nice edition to the game.
The gameplay is a MAJOR department where this game could've used some improvement. Things that worked well in the past MOH games don't stand out in this one. Such as enemy AI. As I said, they needed to keep up with the times. MOH has usually presented a bit of realism and in this one it is completely lost! For example, enemy AI is decreased. I stood in front of two enemies and shot one of them until he was dead while his partner just stood there and watched. Then I had to reload, and while I was doing so the enemy still stood there. When I was finally done reloading he finally attacked. The next result was that I shot him 15 times: IN THE HEAD! This is NOT realism at all.
What's also strange about the realism is that shooting an enemy in the leg with a shotgun actually causes them only to jump around on one foot for a while and then they recover and act as if nothing happened, almost as if the shot never took place.
But the gameplay does have it's high points. It's still a little fun to play. You start off at the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Medal of Honor is always good at giving us this intense war feeling and Rising Sun does this to perfection. So the levels are complex, each taking about 30-60 minutes each to complete and this was actually pretty nice so the game does have longevity.
Plus, the game features a few historical videos with a great narrator to present them. So the game has several extras to behold and completeing missions only unlocks more.
The multiplayer, I can't help but admit, was a bit of a letdown. It's nice to play the multiplayer with a friend but it becomes boring after a while. You select the weapons that you want to battle with, which are no different than what the MOH verteran is used to. What makes the multiplayer a drag for the PS2 is it's online capability. Yes, I like to play games online as well, but with this, it's no different than if you played it with just yourself and a friend. No new, or extended, maps or new weapons and all the character animations look very identical to one another.
The co-op on the game was nice to behold. There is actually a differene in the gameplay this way, such as player one will have to do things for player two to advance forward. Makes the game a little more involving for both players.
So while Medal of Honor Rising Sun isn't a terrible game, it isn't really good either. It's worth maybe a rent or two and if you can get past the very unrealistic gameplay it may even be worth the buy. But I can't help but think what a few more months in developement would've done to it.
A disappointment

When I first heard that there was going to be another installment in the Medal of Honor Series, I was really excited and anxious to get my hands on it. And to hear it was going to be about the pacific part of the war was also a plus for me. Just recently I rented Medal of Honor:Rising Sun, and to say the least I was not impressed. Although I didn't complete the whole game from what I saw I thought it was sloppily done. The opening mission at Pearl Harbor is fantastic but I have one question, why would a marine be aboard a navy ship? I mean there were marines on the island but I don't recall ever hearing that there were marines on the subs and boats. I then went over to my friends house and he had rented the game also for Xbox and we played the 2 player mission mode and we were on the last level, well there was another flaw. I wasn't there in the war but I can guess that american soldiers didn't hop on an elephant and use the machine gun on its back. Maybe I was let down because of the anticipation I had for the game, but it was really a disappointment. Rent first and then buy if you're pleased with it. Frontline is much better.
Great Game!

MOH Rising Sun, like its predecessors, brings a level of historical realism to the gameplay. The hellish ordeal at Pearl Harbor is brought to life with stunning graphical display- planes descend upon sinking sheeps with speed and ferocity as you fight for your life. The fall of the Phillipines is also a challenge.
Then you move to Gadalcanal, where you witness an even bigger level of realism. People have complaied about the way Guadalcanal is designed. saying that its too dark and hard to navigate. However, one must remember that the real-life Guadalcanal was the same. The landscape makes this mission difficult, but that's not an error on the part of the game designers. That's just realism.
People also complain about the idot A.I. of the Japanese, while pretending that the German soliers in Frontline were geniuses. Come on, folks. Those Germans in MOH Frontline weren't any smarter. Anyone remember clearing out the machine gun nest in Frontline? On the hard level, I just stuck my head through the door and picked off each German one by one, while their companions stood with their backs turned. And people say that the Japanese in Rising Sun are stupid?
Then there is the criticism that MOH Rising Sun is Too short. Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I have yet to finish the game on the hard skill level. Rising Sun seems short by comparison because the play is continuous- there are less stops than there are in Frontline.
Frontline's pattern was this:
Get off the beach: STOP
Capture the gunner's nest: STOP
Mark the nest, then blow it up: STOP
Unlike most people, I played Rising Sun FIRST. When I played Frontline I was impressed, but I got frustrated by having to stop after each objective. The smooth, continuous play of MOH Rising Sun is a real improvement, and nobody seems to have noticed.
Frontline is a great game too, but people who were weaned on it don't notice that it has faults too. My advice is to check out both games, and keep an open mind.

Just like Frontline, but at least Frontline had a redeeming first level, D-Day in dolby digital. But after that the game got bad. Mainly due to the fact that they pumped you up so well with the first mission, and then the rest of the game was quiet and slow.
And, they continued the quiet and slow theme. Overall, even multiplayer doesn't redeem this game, too few people playing together, no co-op, nothing...
Don't waste your money.
Also, to kyle on this page with the big long review, there is no D-Day because A: it was in Frontline
and B: This is the pacific theater, not the European. D-Day took place on the shores of France, no where near the pacific islands that this game takes place in.
For single-minded, little kids only.

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun was a huge disappointment. First of all, the graphics are horrible for a fps of its time. The graphics are actually worse than Frontline's! Not only do the graphics suck, but so does the AI and the gameplay.
The game was extremely linear. You are confined to only one direct approach for every mission: Run down the only (and most obvious) path and frag every mentally-challenged Jap in your way.(Think of this game as playing the first Mario Bros. except Mario is replaced by a GI with a gun. And goombas are Japs.) This game is for single-minded people who enjoy playing games which have no depth whatsoever.
The AI of this game is horrible. For example, one time I left Gunny behind, and he crossed paths with a Japanese soldier while trying to catch up with me. The Japanese soldier stabbed him with a bayonet about 50 times, but Gunny didn't care because he was so intent on getting to where I was. He just kept trying to run throught the Jap while he was getting stabbed.(Gunny never died either)
Another thing that irkes me is that EA made every single enemy have the same death animation. The guy that you clubbed with your pistol dies in the exact same fashion as the guy who recieved a direct hit from a bazooka or hand grenade.
I could go on an on about how bad this game is, but that would take a year at least. First person shooters are getting quite advanced these days, and Rising Sun just does not live up to the standards of other fps' like Halo or even the first half-life.
To sum it up, Rising Sun is a low budget, linear, boring game with no replay value. I feel bad for my uncle for going out and spending his time and money to get me this game for Christmas. Any person with an IQ of 5 could beat this game within a day.
Sweet!!

This game takes you right into what war is about. It isn't pretty, this game was not made to be futuristic or fictional in response to the other reviews. Pearl Harbor was a dark time in the history of the United States of America, but why should it be bannned or not purcahsed? WW2 was real and a little more then thousands died try millions! It is are history, this is what happend and that what draws me to playing all of the Medal of Honor games. I am proud to say that this is the best country in the world and if it wasn't for the people who sacarificed ther lives we probably wouldn't be here. So I say that if you are not ashamed to be an American then purchase this game it is historicaly accurate as far as the campaigns, weapons and gameplay. The japanese in the game are very good at sneaking up and surprising you. God Bless America and let are history be shown to all the gamers out there.
