Medal of Honor: Rising Sun

What more can I say. Well, the newest and latest edition to the Medal of Honor franchise is here and available on the Playstation 2. Of course it would be better than Frontline because it is a new and up to date game. But some things have changed and some things haven't. Of course EA would keep the game in first person mode, but there has been some slight alterations that have made this MOH unique. Like the fact that there are bonus/hidden objectives and that at the end of each mission you are graded on 3 different things: Hits Taken, Accuracy, and Bonus Objectives completed. All of these categories makes getting a medal a very tough and a challenging thing indeed. Also you can find certain items that will aid you later on in the game and make things much easier, but you have to look for these things.

Now let's talk about the levels. Well to say the least, these levels are huge!! I'm not kidding. The Day of Infamy level (Pearl Harbor) is very well done and is fun to play over and over again. But most of the action takes place in the jungle (duhh! You're fighting the Japanese around the Philippine Islands) and the Japanese pop up in the most unlikely places and ambush you from behind. So watch your back. And like I said before, the levels are massive. There are so many different paths to take you could easily become confused, but they're fun all the same.

Next we are going to discuss weapons. Well there is not a whole lot to talk about. There has not been that many changes. You will have the usual M1 Garand and the ever faithful Thompson SMG, and yes you have your Shotgun, and your Bazooka, and oh yes, your standard Mark II Frag Grenades to chuck at some holed up Japs.

So now you want to talk about controler capabilities. Well let me say this, there has been a slight change since Frontline. The throw Grenade and Reload weapon capabilities have their own separate buttons which really uses up all the buttons on the controller and their are more controller layouts than Frontline had available.

So there you have it. Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is yet another great game from Electronic Arts and if I have heard and seen correctly, there will be a sequel to this game (the first sequel for the Playstation MOH series) which continues this game's story.

Bottom Line: Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is a really great game to open up a new theater of World War II.

Fantastic!

I already own all of the other MOH's and this one is even better than them. I just bought it last night and a friend and I stayed up all night playing the 2-person campaign. It was awesome. They shortened the campaign a little, but going through the campaign together was great. I am a great fan of historical wargames and this is a must have.

What really saves this game is the multiplayer feature.

I'll start by saying that the missions in this one leave a lot to be desired. It's at least somewhat realistic and fun at first (the imperial officers with the machetes are especially fun to try and bring down), but towards the end of story mode the Japanese soldiers are able to sustain whole magazines of ammo thrown at them, which causes much more frustration than fun. While it is true the Japanese weapons pretty much sucked in WWII, even this is unrealistic.

Also, one thing that really bothers me is that someone has yet to make a game where the guns jam. This one would have been the time to do it, because it even states in the maual the T-11 (Japanese submachinegun) jammed very frequently due to its welded together magazines. I also found the weapons to have poor sound effects, or at least compared to other MOH games.

Now the story mode is only worth 3 stars at maximum, but the multiplayer is absolutely endless fun. I'm not talking about the ability to do the story mode with two players, no, I'm talking about the custom deathmatch mode, much like a Halo or Timesplitters except with WWII weapons. The Japanese characters are hysterical, jumping up and down while gunning at you. This game mode also allows you to choose different places to battle, along with around 15 different weapon combinations. I have spent hours upon hours playing the multiplayer with my brother.

Bottom Line: Fans of Frontline may be disappointed, but people who are fans of the multiplayer kill-em-all type games will love it.

Something Old and Something New

Being a veteran of many OSS missions dating back to the first Medal of Honor game, Rising Sun was as familiar as slipping on a favorite pair of slippers. For me at least the formula has yet to wear out. However, this entry in the series takes us to the exotic lands of the Pacific to do battle with Germany's most powerful ally, the Japanese. The story begins with the Marine Pvt. Joe Griffin being rudely awakened in his bunk on the USS. California by the attack on Pearl Harbor. This level consists mostly of running through corridors, past fires and dead bodies to reach topside and finally taking control of machine guns to defend the Pacific Fleet. From there the game takes you to the futile defense of the Philippines, the city of Singapore, the jungles of Burma and Guadalcanal, etc. The overall mission is to prevent the Japanese from transporting captured gold to the home islands where they can use it to finance their war.

As mentioned before, the gameplay is very similar to previous entries. Though the environments are new, veterans will easily adjust. As before, the missions seem too linear. And as before the action is fast-paced and intense. The excellent sound (a staple of the series) once again delivers with great voice-overs, gun blast, and tension filled music. A nice touch is that the music features instruments native to each location. And I should mention a recent trend. Frontline's equivalent to Rising Sun's Pearl Harbor sequence was the Saving Private Ryan inspired D-Day mission. It seems EA has carved a niche in replicating blockbuster movie scenes into its games. Unfortunately, both missions were far too short and easy.

There are a few differences changes with Rising Sun. Along with the four-player deathmatch, we also get a two-player co-op. An excellent addition. RS also sports a strong narrative. Now mission briefings are not read, but watched through cinematic sequences. And since these are the Japanese we are fighting this time, the A.I. has been tweaked. Like their real-life counterparts the Japanese soldiers will sometimes attempt to charge you with a gratuitously long bayonet or samurai sword. They can be easily dispatched with a shotgun, however it will spook you. Especially when you can hear soldiers in the distance, but can't see them. It will have you constantly checking your six like a disgruntled postman with schizophrenia.

The bottom line: There is nothing revolutionary, but the tried-and-true formula keeps me coming back. An interesting fact: MOH: Frontline was one of the few American-made games that did exceptionally well in Japan. But how well will Rising Sun do in Japan, especially when that country attempts to downplay its role in the Second World War?

High hopes fall short

The MOH series is a marvel, with cinematic scenes and ambient music that make you believe you are walking onto a movie set about WWII. That is sort of the issue at hand-the current "Rising Sun" title hasn't really elevated the series to a new level, it just..adds to the feeling you are playing in a movie.
That is not to say it is not a fun and detail-driven game! It was/is news to me the game is going to be a two-parter: Spending $100 for what amounts to a glorified MOH: Frontline "expansion" is not what I had expected. It's a fun game to play, and the story with all the detail is impressive.
Just dont get excited about online play. Each and every time I've gone online to play I've been disappointed by a few things:

* Maps are small. We are talking SMALL here.
* Games are limited to 4 on 4.
* Participation seems to not be taking off. On average there are 75 people at any given time of the day.

I'm not going to present a completely negative outlook of this game, because to their credit the EA team did a lot of work getting this game to the stunning level of detail it is at. However, be realistic in your expectations of it; it is part of the MOH series first, and a multiplayer game at a distant second.

My overall reccomendation? Go rent it first before you buy it.

Feel like inside the movie

For those who love War Games, the Rising Sun is a great game. The player fells like a Marine inside the movie "Pearl Harbor", trying to survive the Japanese attack during II War and inside Guadalcanal. Face the levels with another friend is a great experience.

Probably the best 1st person shooting game to date

The 2 player campaign is lots of fun. The multiplayer death match is extremely addictive. Its alittle short but most 1st person shooters that are new are short.

Short and Fun

The game was of overall excelece except i beat it in a matter of only 2 days and im not a big video game person. They need to add more levels. The game was awsome tho, very life like with secret objectives and when you shoot some of the Japaneese they fall still pulsing at the trigger. The game is very life like but i would rent it before you buy it.

This is my second favorate shooter.I love playing this game on either multiyplayer or online.on multiyplayer you don't need to have two players to play, and online all you need to play is a network adapter and some first person shooter skills.well that's all I've got to say about this game.

You get the feeling like your in the game!!!!!!
