Medal of Honor "Setting Sun" STINKS!

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 9 / 13
Date: January 07, 2004

Following the purchase of Frontline, I was excited to purchase Rising Sun. My elderly grandparents spent most of their hard-earned social security money on this game for me for Christmas. They spent $50 on this game for me. On Christmas morning, I tore open the wrapping paper, and was thrilled to find the two disks within the case of the game. "This is going to be great! There must be many missions if there are two disks," I thought to myself. Immediately, I began to play the game. The first mission, Pearl Harbor, was not only terrible, but also quite historically inacurate (one man did not shoot down 58 planes). Each mission got worse and worse. However, I continued to play this game, thinking that the missions would get better. I WAS DEAD WRONG. The last mission (of only 8), was horrible. After blowing up an aircraft carrier (which was quite unrealistic), I saw the credits roll by. "That was it?" I pondered. This was the worst game in the history of the entertainment industry. The greedy fools at E/A Games thought that they could trick kids into purchasing this game. The fat cats in charge of the company were probably sitting around in their million dollar offices and said "Let's create a cheap, short game, and sell it for $50. The kids are so dumb, they'll buy whatever garbage we produce. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GAME!!! Also, if you didn't notice, all of the positive reviews of this game are the same. I believe the CEO of EA Games has written all of them.

What Happened to MOH? Disappointed in Rising Sun

I am a late convert to the Medal of Honor series. I've played them both on PC (Allied Assault and Spearhead) and xbox (Frontline). I had great expectations for Rising Sun but was soon disappointed when I got the game home and started playing. My overall impressions are that EA rushed through production of this game to hit the shelves in the holiday timeframe. The story starts of well enough with the attack on Pearl Harbor, and moving into the fall of the Philippines, but quickly falls into repetition after that. One jungle trail looks like the next, and there is no need to strategize, just load up and shoot anything that moves. The enemy AI is not a challenge, the graphics are terrible, the difficulty is minimum, It is very linear, point a to point b without much difficulty. When I finished the game, which took all of about a week, I didn't even realize it. I went up to the web to find out if my game was broken, or I wasn't doing something right. Way too short. Maybe I'm missing something, but a game you can complete in 1 week is not worth the $50. A great weekend rental. My guess is that you will be able to pick this one up cheap about a week after Christmas.....used!

any one who reviewed this game as better than frontline must work for EA games. Anyone who reviewed this game as hard is either 4 years old or only has 1 arm, if they do not fit into one of these categories should immediately give away their game system, this is the easiest FPS I've ever played. Even on Hard the Japanese are such bad shots you can run up to them from a hundred yards away while they are shooting at your and club them down with your rifle. If they happen to hit you once or twice don't worry, there is health about every 50 feet in this game. don't buy this game, bad plot, bad levels, too easy, too short.

Doesn't Cut It!

I've got all the MOH games going back to the original on the PS1. I could play every one over and over and not got bored, except this one. This is not up to standards. First of all, it is poor quality. The games physics and AI are terrible, the control is awful, and it is sloppy (going to cut scenes in the middle of a battle). I particularly like hitting an enemy in the chest with my Springfield from 2 feet and he keeps coming and stabs me to death. This game does not have the feel the others do. Its not half the game Frontline is. More like a quarter. And the graphics are no better then Frontline. I don't know where that rumor came from.

A fun but ultimately disappointing release

Whilst Medal of Honor: rising Sun is an entertaining addition to the series, I think it will prove ultimately disappointing to fans of previous MoH games. The gameplay is not all that different from previous games, except (as many reviewers have commented)the game is much shorter and far too easy. I waltzed through the Pearl Harbor levels first time- it's hard to see how you could fail! In contrast the storming of the beaches level on Frontline took a while to conquer.

For me the main disappointment is that the game appears to have been rushed. The graphics are actually pretty poor(there is no way they are superior to Frontline as some reviewers have written) and the game ultimately fails at giving the impression you are actually fighting in WW2. Much of the pleasure from Frontline came with your characters ability to interact with the environment (i.e. shoot pillows and feathers come out; shoot clock and cuckoos and springs pop out; windows smash) and amusing asides. In contrast Rising Sun does not have the detail and indeed much of the environment is poorly rendered and hard to see. Only the sound lives up to previous MoH editions.

Overall MoH Rising Sun is a diverting game with some interesting levels but has failed to take the series a step forward. Gamers will probably be hoping that the superb "Call of Duty" makes a successful translation from PC to console by way of compensation.

Great First person shooter

MOH rising sun is a terrific game I don't know why people think it is a bad game. I have played all the MOH games out there. Yes MOH rising sun is not the best in the series, it's still a great game. Very realistic landscape and good graphics too. I don't know how long you expected this game to be but its not I reapeat not an RPG. Its a fisrt person shooter meaning you go around shooting people it is that simple. How long do you need a game to be where you shoot people. You need to take time to explore the game then you will see how good it really is. The multiplayer option in this game needs a little work but it is still good. All around this game is very good and worth buying. I can honestly tell you that half of the other WWII games don't even compare to how good this game really is and besides how many other WWII take place in Japan? not many, and EA has done a good job with this game and you should try it out.

Very fun but needs a tune up in someplaces.

I thought this game was pretty good. This game has great sound and the graphics are good too. The only problem is enemy machine guns are everywhere and you only need to get hit 7 to 10 times to die. The machine guns fire 10 bullets every 2 seconds, whicth is frusterating. Plus your Tompson has way too much recoil. If you fire 5 consecutive shots, you have to wait 2 seconds for your gun to recover from the recoil. That aside, this is a very cool game.

Good game, but not as good as Frontline

I had high expectations for this release based on things I'd read about it, and I figured that this release would be even better than Frontline. After having finished the entire game in about six hours, I'm a little dissapointed. The graphics are incredible, it's obvious EA's advanced them well beyond where they were for even Frontline. But the A.I. is still not too bright except for perhaps the Guadalcanal invasion level. The rest of the levels the enemy just isn't too bright and you can mow them down easily.
I did enjoy the different types of missions however. In this game rather than most of the missions set in towns like Frontine, they're set in towns (including one part in a hotel) but a few are also in the jungles of Pacific islands, which is a fun change, including one where you've got to go running through a wrecked train.
However, the missions just seem too short. I was shocked at how fast I could complete every mission except perhaps two where I got lost and had to find the right way back again. The in level saves probably are the difference as to why every mission seems shorter, but I think they're a bonus because if you die you don't have to completely re-do a level if you've saved.

PRO--
1. Graphics are great
2. Added gameplay including riding an elephant and also missions where you're in a PT boat at Pearl Harbor and using AA guns. As well as a tail gunner for an airplane in the final mission.
3. In game saves lessen frustration

CON--
1. A.I. still needs work, the enemy is still not too bright
2. Missions are too short, the game could have been longer.

I have read that this is part I of a two part series, with part II coming out sometime in 2004. There is a cliffhanger at the end of this game, I hope the next release perhaps takes us all the way to Japan. THAT would be fun!

High hopes but way too easy

This game was highly anticipated, but sadly it falls short of what it could have been.

First off, format wise, they throw in a Multiplayer mode, sadly missing from the PS2 version of Frontline. They also support online play. These features are great--the bots in Multiplayer can be tough. So what happened to the AI in the regular mode?

Overall, the first player mode falls short. These EA shooters are all starting to look the same. I loved the Bond games, they were fun and captured the spirit of the movies. MoH Frontline was fantastic as well. Rising Sun has a lot going for it, but sometimes feels like they just got lazy.

For one, the game is very easy. I finished this game in about two days, effectively. There is very little strategy involved, and the computer AI is plain bad. The Japanese soldiers are, of course, lousy shots, and at times will just charge right into the barrell of your gun. The game gives you computer controlled teammates so you can fight side by side, but as can be expected, that AI is pretty awful, making the feature useless. Your partners are bumbling buffoons. I also found myself running around certain boards trying to figure out where to go and what action to perform, something that rarely happened in the first one or in the Bond games.

The graphics are very good, the sound is awesome, but there are some things missing. There is hardly any interaction with the surroundings aside from what you must do to finish a board. It may seem like a small thing, but it's just lazy. You can't open any doors except for ones that are essential to you finishing a board. You can't break random things and shoot up rooms, something that both the Bond games and Frontline had. There are some new features, such as the opening bit of manning a carrier gun during the Pearl Harbor attack and shooting down 0 fighters, or riding an elephant. But again, it's all way too easy. Matter of fact, I actually couldn't believe I finished the game when I did, the last mission hardly offers a challenge for a first person shooter. And the Pearl Harbor opening is nowhere near as tough or as new as the D-Day landing of the original.

I dropped fifty bucks on this game when it came out, and the only reason I'm not selling it back used is the multiplayer option, which still doesn't make it a great value. I think MoH fans will find a lot to like, but the game could have been much better.

You have more weapons, and some great looking boards, including very realistic jungles. I did find myself getting lost on boards and getting frustrated because of the layout, but in the end, like the original and like Bond, the game just guides you through the missions on autopilot. Even timid first person shooter fans will finish this game in no time.

Of course, the game is bloodless and carries a teen rating, which is a shame. I don't understand why they try to sanitize a WWII game, but it's EA, and I guess they want a bigger market.

I'm hoping the 3rd person Bond game next year will be a lot better. I was looking forward to this, now I need to go out and buy something with a little more replay value.

Great!

This game is far the gratest of all my games. I couldn't wait to play it. Currently I'm somewhere in the middle :-) Very realistic and stunning. You'll need to change the controller options in order to keep old setting from the first MOH game. Don't get too close to the Japs unless you'll be stabbed.

This is a must have game - recommended!
