Big Disappointment

The highly anticipated DMC2 is a major disappointment, especially if you have played the previous game. In a way, this game makes you appreciate more the original DMC.

It wasn't too long ago that DMC was released, and that clearly shows in the sequel. Everything from this game points out that it was patched together in a hurry.

First of all, the story: There is none. It is terrible. Even though DMC didn't have much of a story, well, at least had some sort of plot, and theme that helped to immerse you in the game. Not DMC2. There is no continuity from the previous game, the cool and mighty Dante is turned into a monosyllabic moron, gone are the cool talks between Dante and his enemies, and you are in a mess of a world where levels are patched together senselessly: One moment you are in a MGS2-like platform, next you are in a gothic medievalesque town, then you are on a futuristic city, having no clue what you are doing other that hack and slash away. It just gives the impression that these were leftover levels from DMC that were patched together for a "sequel" with some bad cutscenes and impersonal bosses in-between.

Gameplay takes a step back too. Dante fights slower and less stylishly with his sword, and he has less moves. Gone are Alastor and Ifrit, and you will surely miss them. Dante's new swords are just some sad conventional swords, and they are dull and boring. Plus, when you upgrade your weapons, you don't even get new moves or they change appearance. They just do more damage, I guess. You can't even buy new moves like before. Guns are improved a bit, though, and Dante can now evade and do some other gimmicky stunts. The start/select menu system has been messed up too. The game is also very easy. In fact, the hardest thing so far is finding the easy/automatic mode, which is supposed to be there as in the original, and so far I don't know of anybody who has been able to unlock it. Also, the fixed camera angles problems are worse than in DMC and can be a big headache.

There was a lot of hype about this game being so "huge". That was not correct. The only thing that makes it "huge" is that you have two discs for two different players: Dante and the new character, Lucia. Lucia is a nice addition, but pretty much, it is exactly the same game for each character, so not much added there. The levels are not huge, and in fact, I found the game to be quite short, although somewhat longer than the original DMC.

Graphics and sound are about the same. With graphics, I was disappointed by the backgrounds and environments, but saw some improvements in the character's animations. Overall, good.

To be fair, this game may bias reviewers who were looking forward to something like DMC and were disappointed to find that it doesn't even come close, even with DMC having some flaws (like its short length). For someone who hasn't played DMC before, this may still qualify as a fun action game, albeit with some ridiculous plot (which some people don't care for). Therefore, I won't give it just one star.

Finally, CAPCOM should fire this developing team and bring back Shinji Mikami and the original DMC team, and save Dante and the series in a worthy sequel, and lets just forget that this game ever happened.

This is not Devil May Cry :-(

I got this game because the first one rocked!!! but this one just doen't feel right. It has no real plot, boring voice acting and it is too short and easy to finish. Over all it still has some good moves but this is no Devil May Cry, Capcom has delivered one really bad sequel to a license with real potencial.

Better than Original with a Pulp-Fiction Twist.

I have finished playing this game, and I have to say it was much better than the original. The puzzles are a lot less complicated, and the platformers are much easier. Dante still packs as much firepower as he did in the original, but instead of learning new moves, Dante (and his partner, Lucia) improve weapon capabilities. I have to say that I like the inclusion of secret rooms to improve Dante's and Lucia's health via collection of blue orb fragments. Lucia is the newest member of the Devil May Cry games. She has better close-up maneuvers and much quicker than Dante. However, she lacks the firepower.

Graphically, the environments are fairly massive, and you no longer backtrack generally. True, you do revisit some locations, but luckily, not all of them. Dante, Lucia and their enemies also look graphically superior than the original. The Devil forms actually look much better as well.

Gameplay-wise, it has gotten much better as well. Dante and Lucia are flexible and walk on walls and kick in the air. Lastly, the Bosses in the game have gotten harder, especially for Dante. If you have confronted the last boss for Dante, you know the feeling of accomplishing and defeating the final boss. Lucia however is actually a superior fighter than Dante overall at least when confronting the bosses.

The storyline is done in two parts, from Dante's perspective and Lucia's perspective. As soon as you play both discs, you get the full story on what happened, what is happening, and why they are kicking demon butt. When you obtain the full story, the story itself is actually much better than the first.

Overall, this game is definitely a great addition to any PS2 library. With the flood of mediocre console games lately, this is a great buy. One note: this game is relatively short, lasting about 25-30 hours at most (for the first completion of the game anyway at Normal Mode). Lastly, the game does have some bonuses and extras to unlock, including Trish from the original Devil May Cry.

It's a great game. Takes a little while to understand the controls and what not. This is also the final game in the series as a finisher. DMC 5 may hold something different.
