This game is the worst. Don't get me wrong I LOVED Devil may cry but this game sucks. The chick is super bad she is like seriously stupid looking. And where is Trish?!?! She is gone I guess then the shop everything the whole story that was set up in Devil may cry was just blown to hell (no pun intended) Dante looks like a complete fool in DMC2 he talks really bad. The new moves suck because the shoot both ways doesnt work. And when you want to roll out of the way you end up walking up a wall. or when you want to walk along the wall you roll down into these holes. Some sequels rock and some suck. Look at buffy the vampire slayer I am a HUGE fan of the show I have read every novel and played the first game and loved it. But the second one sucked horribly same goes for here. You don't have to take my word for it but the game really sucks. If you liked the first one you probably wont like this one. What was really bad was I got them both together and I played DMC like 24 and finished it loved it. But when I started DMC2 the keys are all different imagine being used to cutting with X now X is jump and cut is triangle. Plus the orbs are changed the whole system is F***ed the only good thing about the game is you can save any time as to only when a mission was complete in the first one that is the only good thing and the cutscences that are made out of pure graphics are nice but it isnt worth the time or the money.

Not as good!

This game was definitlly not as good as the 1rst. The controls changed and they take a while to get used to. It's an easy game but has better graphics. You can play as a new character which is funner but that great its always best to be the original. It is rated M but that is being harsh its a okay game for people 12+. If you were going to buy any of the 2 games it would be smartest to go with DMC part 1.

First of all it keeps repeating itself, and it never stops. You keep killing the same creatures over and over again. This is a boring game, their is really no point in making this game. Dante bairly says a word for the full 6 hours. That right folks, this game is 6 hours long. Most of the best gamers in the world will beat it in 3 hours. The story is terrible and I am not looking forward to the third installment, if there is going to be one.

just not the same

When the first devil may cry was released, the public was blown away. Dante was cool in everyway, he had bad ass moves, even more bad ass weapons, and just new how to give the baddies a hard time. Devil May Cry 2 was looking to be the breakaway hit that surpassed the first in everyway. However, it almost falls short in evry single aspect form the forst game.

There only two points that have improved in Devil May Cry 2. the first being the controls of the game, they still say much the same, very fluid and easy to adapt to. I also found it a nice change to have a second playable character. The problem with this character is that her moves are almost exactly the same as Dante's she just moves a bit faster.

As for the storyline,...well there really is no storyline. The first Devil May Cry was great because not only did you get to obliterate hoards and hoards of baddies, but it was all packed to gether with an excellent storyline. Once you finish this game, you feel like you actually know less about who Dante actually is, because the storyline is EXTREMELY confusing.

Another adition, which could have come off as either a good or bad thing, is that the level size is MUCH bigger. Unfortunately in this game, it is a very bad thing, since you spend most of your time brainless tapping the button that fires your guns. As a matter of fact, when you get to the flying bat on the roof top, the only way to hit it is to continously mash the fire button, and since the game has auto aim, there is no strategy! The whole point of having both a sword AND guns is so that you can use them both, and in this game you will find yourself using your guns MUCH more than your sword. This also makes leveling up your sword with red souls pointless, since most of the time your not using it!

I'm not saying this game is completely empty of any entertainment, there are shining moments when you find yourself creating huge combos, and yes you still feel like a bad ass, SOMETIMES. If your looking at this game because the first blew you away, you may just want to rent it, because the game is EXTREMELY easy, and you will probably beat it within five hours of picking it up. If you haven't played the first one and your thinking of buying the second. DON'T! Buy the first one, rent the second, believe me its not worth your money to buy!

Good game for first timer

I didn't play Devil May Cry 1 and decided to give DMC2 a try regardless of some poor reviews. The story is pretty good, but this game gets boring quick. It's a simple hack and slash game like Dynasty Warriors without trailing sword plays. The camera angles are horrible, one second you run to the right, the camera switches to another angle and the next thing you know you are running to the left even though you are still holding right button. Capcom could have done better by putting more puzzles and mysteries in this game like they did on Onimusha series.

Devil may cry 2 is a bad game. The only reason you should play it is if your a hardcore Devil May Cry fan. You'll lose interest in it otherwise.

This is quite a paradox of a game. Rather than give a strait review like usual, I'll state the pros and cons.

Pros:
*Absolutely beautiful graphics. Certainly the best looking game on the ps2, along with Final Fantasy X. You can see for miles. The smaller enemies have pretty generic graphics, but the larger ones like the bosses and the Goat clan are unbelievable.
*The fighting engine in this game is really cool. It's very fast paced, with evasion, double jumping, rapid fire guns, and hand to hand combat.
*Easy learning curve. The controls are very simple for this game, which makes for an easy start. It's not to complex so as it confuses people, and not simple enough to get boring.
*Action! It's very fast paced, and always has tons of stuff happening at once.

Cons:
*EASY. This game, at times, is EASY. I can't stress that enough. It's got an "automatic difficulty level" that changes to suit the gamer, however, I really kicked butt in this game, and it wasn't hard.
*Camera angles. The camera angles in this game are aggravating as heck. You miss lots of important items (the friggin' rocket launcher) because you just can't see them!
*Bosses. Some bosses are just annoying. The second-to-last boss, "tri-" something, is just stupid. You CAN NOT block some attacks, and it makes it literally impossible to beat, which is even more annoying considering how easy all the rest of the game is. If the boss isn't impossible, then it's a joke. Either you just stand there and shoot it to death, or it stand there and shoots you to death.
*Game time- This game is SHORT. I rented it and beat the first disc in 6 hours. The second disc is just the same game with a different character, so it doesn't really increase the replay value.

All in all, this game is an AWESOME rent. Or, if you'ret a gamer 15 years old and under, you'll really enjoy it. Some people may enjoy this more than I did, I'm really picky when it comes to video games.

If you're a hard core gamer, rent it. If you're looking for a fun game, and you're not particular, then buy it- either way you won't regret it and you'll enjoy the experience.

Obviously a Sequel

Devil May Cry 2, while maintaining the graphic detail and lush sound of the first title, comes up short in the gameplay department.

The fighting style, while at first seems the same, is very very different. I loved the first game enough to beat it 5 times and I'm now on my 6th time through, so I know how great the game is. I also feel that I have mastered the fighting style that is so stylish and intuitive.

The fighting style is where DMC2 strays from the original. Dante's sword fighting, while looking pretty much the same, plays very different. It is not as fast and clean as the original. In the original, timing your hit of the sword button differently produced different combos; this has sadly been left out of the second. Changing from swords to guns is also slower than the first as well. Even the firing of the trademark pistols is slower and choppy, very different from the swift firing of the first. Dante's new moves are really fun to look at, and some are actually useful, but don't really add anything to the gameplay.

The sequel should have retained the controls of the first and just added new levels and enemies. I would have been glad to have everything the same, just new levels and enemies. But, the game has changed so much it doesn't even feel like the originall one bit. Because the fighting is slower, it has a very different feel than the first.

Although Dante slashes and shoots slower, the game is so unbelievably easy that it doesn't really matter. Normal enemies often stand still waiting to get hit. Bosses don't take any more strategy than finding a nice place to stand and shoot.

Rent this game if you are fan of the first, because buying it would be a waste of [$$$].

Demon hunting taken to the max!

...I've already beat the game and I'm too astounded to keep it to myself! Alright, for those that haven't played the original, think of an action RPG like Onimusha or the like only with guns, an enormous and adventurous environment to play in, and plenty of tricky areas to test Dante's acrobatic arsenal.
Dante, the son of a revolutionary Demon from a dark past, has many powers of a powerful demon, hence his heritage. I guess the point is some owner of a cityscape corporation is using some Demonic powers and it's allowing Demons back into the world. Evidentially, it's your job to take him out. But it really won't sound like it ends there, as there are stories of Dante's father that will possibly be revealed after the job is done.
However long the actual game is, it takes up two disks, thus looks to make a promising amount of time for a grand storyline, but you'll find the second disk is mostly repetition with a different character. And if you enjoy a challenge when fighting bosses, don't expect anything less from this game. The bosses may not be impossibly tough, but they do tend to toss you around and give a hard...time. The challenge also rests in the amount of red orbs (similar to the red soul deal in Onimusha) that you use to buy useful items and enhance your weapons. Both guns and swords can be advanced, which leads to a tense squeeze for balancing weapons since guns take a bit more to enhance. As far as the bosses go, the first couple will seem difficult for those who haven't experienced this kind of game. After two or three hours, expect to have an easier time with bosses and minions alike, for the skills you learn and tie together makes all the difference.
Acrobatic skills are quite heavy in supply, and should thus be used in succession to each other to make a good attack strategy. As for defense, movement is everything. One of the most obvious elements that are missing would be the ability to block. But after a couple hours in the game, this will seem like the most trivial miss noticeable, all because of the many movement combos that can make a perfect defensive array. And you'll notice many different changes from your original game play style after you've played for awhile, ranging from just shooting and walking around in circles to double-jump, shoot, then down slash to finish. Other useful skill combinations will come along, just practice different things every now and then.
There are several other things to take notice of like boss strategies, Devil Trigger uses (those who never played the first, you'll find out), and deciding what enhancements to make based on what you have. The rest will come clear once you've adapted to the game better, which is probably why you won't make a very big fuss about it until you've passed around five or six missions. By that time, it'll prove to be the most adrenaline-high and cinematic experiences in gaming today.
