Majora's Mask

Just order the thing! You can't go wrong! As far as the 3 day time issue... First off, you have the Ocarina and the song of time. Need I say more. The scarecrow can also teach you a "mysterious" song that will either slow down or speed up time to help. By no means is this a game where you only have three days to complete everything. The three days only gives urgency to the action which was missing in "Ocarina of Time". One thing to note: Nintendo did a great job *not changing* the gameplay. So... Just order it already!

Excellent!

This game is worth the money. The graphics are excellent, the sound is as good as OoT...and did I mention the graphics? The storyline is really unique, and I really like having all the different masks, which is a really unique way to gain new powers. Also, it's fun to be able to play different forms of Link. Another really interesting aspect of this game is that you can really interact with the townspeople. They are leading their own lives, not just standing in the same place all day. If you talk to them at different times while they are doing different things, you will get different answers. My one complaint about the game is the time limit. It was a really unique idea, but losing hundreds of rupees (not to mention items) can be really annoying. Still, this game is totally worth buying, even if OoT is better. My one peice of advice is to get a guide, because it is really helpful finding all those fairies.

A MUST HAVE!

Finally, I am once again challenged in my favorite of arenas, the Gaming World. Not since its predecessor, OOT, has a game given me such a challenge, both mentally and physically. In fact, this game has by far surpassed the excellency of OOT in playability.

1. The Graphics are amazing. I love the addition of all the new characters and new landscapes which have arisen in this game. I am a little saddened that I am once again not trekking off in search of Princess Zelda's captors, but we can always save that for a later date can't we.

2. The sounds are very well done. I am quite pleased to hear the return of the original quest music and also glad to hear addition of new tunes as well. The sound affects from game characters are quite good as well and at times can be very comical.

3. The Difficulty level is hightened to a new plane. Break out your thinking caps for this one. It isn't just following the directions anymore. This game will stretch you to the breaking point to just find that the answer was right under your nose after all. On the other hand, one has to use all their gaming instincts to stay alive in the provided 72 minute time frame. Don't even begin to think that you have enough time because you don't and in the castles and temples, you will soon find this out.

4. New weapons. I am not very far into the game yet, but the weapons and items I have recieved up to this point are very cool. I think the mask transformations are quite phenomenal and Nintendo has found a new twist for this already twisted classic.

5. The game itself. As a whole, the game is flawless. It is by far one of the most challenging games I have ever played and I am quickly becoming addicted. This is a game for gamers and to think otherwise is foolish nonsense, but if you are trying to build your skill, this game will put you to the test. Chances are gamers will love it and casual players, not so much.

Thank you Nintendo for giving a classic bak to the people. This is the best game released for the N64 except for the OOT and that is just because it was the first on the system. Now I must ask just one favor from you Nintendo. Please, Bring Back METROID!!!

Zelda: Majora's Mask AS GOOD AS OCARINA OF TIME

(this is for those who have only played Ocarina of Time) I have just bought this game and beaten the first temple. I love this game so far. I believe it is the exact same as Ocarina of Time which I loved as well. I didn't want this gmae to be any different. All of the controls and style is exactly the same, just a different adventure. The new world is vast yet again and complex. I don't like the idea of having time limits without true saving, because you don't have that much time to explore like Ocarina of Time. The graphics are a bit better than Ocarina, but sometimes there is some slow down with only 15 or 20 frames per second. The music is amazing once again with the same composer as the first one. The music makes you become Link and transform into his world. This will be the game of the year yet again. I will bet my money on it! I know this takes just as long to beat as Ocarina, because there is so much stuff to do besides the 4 temples. I would recomend this game to anyone in need of a great RPG. This will be the 2nd best game on all systems next to Ocarina of Time which set the standards for what an adventure RPG should be. Buy it, no matter how much it costs.

The BEST game ever created

Majora's Mask is a revolution in gaming. It contains the essence of fun. Whether you're defending cows from evil aliens, solving brain-busting puzzles, or transforming into one of four things--this game keeps you ecstatic.(For those of you who have played the game and are scoffing at me for saying one of FOUR things, you obviously haven't gotten the Feirce Deity Mask.) This game, which requires the Expansion Pak, may have only four dungeons, but trust me when I say they are ENORMOUS. Besides, there is a plethora of side-quests to keep you entertained for years to come. A great thing about this game(and something that makes it more RPG-ish) is the Bomber's Notebook. Sometimes you can't progess without the Bomber's Notebook. Also, I would say half the masks you get have something to do with the Bomber's Notebook. The games visuals are top-notch, too--a great use of the Expansion Pak. Some people are skeptical of this game, saying that if it's an RPG, I would beat it and never play it again. Well, they're wrong, and hopefully they've played it by now. The ingenuity and unending quests and visuals and every little thing in this game are just too incredible to describe, I'm almost speechless. But not speechless enough to tell you this: BUY THE GAME. And if you don't own an N64: BUY THE SYSTEM AND THE GAME. It'll be the only game you'll ever play, I promise. Buy it.

By No Means a Sequel

The most prolific criticism of Majora's Mask I encountered was that it was "not as good as the original." Apples and oranges, my friend. Majora's Mask offers a gaming experience significanty different from that in Ocarina of Time. While the appearance of the game and the characters may bear a striking resemblance to those present in the first Zelda title for the Nintendo 64 console, the game concept and plot line are remarkably innovative. The progression of time in Majora's Mask through three recurring, consecutive days provides the player with a unique challenge. I considered Ocarina of Time's greatest failing to be that the flow of time actually had no true impact on the gameplay. Some items appeared at night and vanished in the daytime, but considering the ease with which the player could control this cycle through the use of the ocarina, this presented no true challenge. In Majora's Mask, certain events may only occur once during the seventy-two hour (or minutes in real time without, altering the in-game time progression) game cycle. Time is precious in Majora's Mask, and as because it is a scarce commodity, you must manage yours effectively. The new plot line places Link under an entirely new set of circumstances. In reliving the same three days repeatedly, the player becomes far more familiar with the intricacies of Link's world. Most minor characters in Ocarina of Time were largely insignificant, and player interaction with them was minimized. A plethora of relevant characters inhabit Link's new world, and there various stories often intertwine to produce clever sub-plots. Lastly, the masks Link collects throughout the game add an entirely new dimension to the Zelda game series. Each mask possesses specific powers and abilites that can help make your quest notably more convenient than it otherwise might be. I would like to thank you if you actually read this entire longwinded passage, but I have thoroughly enjoyed both Zelda releases for the Nintendo 64 system, and feel it is my civic duty to inform any potential consumer that Majora's Mask is most certainly not a re-packaged Ocarina of Time. It is not necessarily better and it is not necessarily worse for that matter. Yet it is a distincly different and extremely entertaining gaming experience.

New and improved

I'll skip the introduction of the game since it has been perfectly explained by the other reviewers.

I think Mr. Miyamoto's intention when creating this adventure was to improve the overall game design presented in Ocarina of Time (OOT) while taking advantage of the more advanced options available with the 4MB Expansion Pack. If anyone thought that OOT's design was creative and challenging, just wait until you get your hands into this one.

I am positive that Majora's Mask is much deeper, entertaining and complex than its predecessor, and I think the complexity was a necessary addition in order to attract the attention to the majority of us who played / completed OOT. Therefore, those of you who haven't gone through OOT should do so first before tackling this one. It will save hours of frustration. Although Majora's Mask has several helpful introductory and explanatory scenes within the adventure, it doesn't teach you the most basic control skills as detailed as OOT did (e.g. the use of the C buttons/ walking, running, jumping, Z-targeting, the fanfare when grabbing a C-Item such as a Deku Nut/Stick for the first time etc.). On the other hand, there is a very useful added feature in Majora's were you can obtain a brief explanation of your items, weapons and masks by pressing the A (blue) button at any time on the game Sub screens. With all the masks and items available, this feature is absolutely a nice plus.

While there are only 4 dungeons to conquer in this game, I believe that they are more than enough, considering that there are an abundance of mini-games and plenty of challenging sub-quests that will keep your adventure thirst quenched.

The addition of special masks that actually morphs Link into a completely new character, with added abilities (and weaknesses) also introduces a whole new depth and challenge in game play. Then you add the realistic touch of time-flow and the many different events triggered when wearing different masks at different times on different locations, and you absolutely have a whole new ball game.

The Bombers Notebook is also a pretty convenient feature added to the adventure. Here you keep electronically the schedule and requests of every character you meet in the game. This makes it almost unnecessary to have your own set of garbled paper notes that many times were accidentally thrown out to the wastebasket.

Game controls are identical in Majora's and OOT, making the learning period much quicker for those of us with previous experience. Most of the adventure characters and items are very similar in both games as well. Even some of the mini-games and masks are simply some sort of an improved variation from OOT. These characteristics I just mentioned make this game more of an extension to the OOT adventure, which is actually great.

By the way, I also complained initially about the whole time concept put into game play. But it turned out to be a quite clever addition. This actually makes you plan ahead instead of just letting you wander into the over world collecting stuff and getting frustrated. If you think about it, considering that the 72 hours in Termina go by in a bit in over an hour in real time, you are certain that any quest you get into, such as a dungeon, should not take you more than that.

Nintendo has accomplished another big hit, unique with its new challenges while keeping the same interface and many of the characters and features that made OOT a huge hit.

This is definitely another classic with many hours of game play and a lot of replay value (if you play without a guide). A must buy and 100% recommended

I'm really impressed, but really confused...

For those who would hold it against my credibility, I'll say this: I am not one of the people who have been playing Zelda or other Nintendo products since the first one came out. To be perfectly honest, I have been playing Nintendo games for about six years, four of which were spent playing Zelda. I was hooked by the copy of Ocarina of Time at my friend's house, and have subsequently played through that game more times than I can count. When I finally picked up Majora's Mask, I was amazed at the quality of the graphics and sound, and I couldn't wait until I finally collected every single mask, or helped every single person in my Bomber's Notebook.

Every feature in the game managed to hold my attention for hours on end. While similar to the complex world of Hyrule, Termina was very complex in it's own right, with well rounded characters and absolutely gorgeous worlds. Tatl is fantastic by herself, taking Navi's occasionally sharp-edged comments and turning them into witty, albeit sarcastic at times, terms for how she thinks is the best way to get through the game. A fairy with personality! There are enough mini-games and subquests (fifty-two heart pieces, for example, as opposed to Ocarina's thiry-six) to constitute a whole other game by themselves, and leave plenty of the options for the gamer looking for a break from the usual quest.

However, I'm a bit confused as to why other gamers balk at the idea of a time limit, as if the game will shut down if not completed in forty-five minutes. Clearly, it proves that they have not played the game through, if they played it at all. At the end of three days (supposing you have the Ocarina), the Song of Time can be played to bring you back to the beginning of the first day. If that doesn't leave you enough time to complete a dungeon, there are numerous other songs that can help (The Inverted Song of Time, for example, will slow down time by almost half). True, rupees and other items will be lost in the process, but rupees can be saved at the Bank in West Clock Town, and items are easy enough to obtain. Dungeons reset after you complete them, but you still retain proof that they're done, and only in certain circumstances is it necessary to replay a dungeon. Also, there are numerous ways to save the game itself, with Owl Statues to freeze the game in progress until the next time the file is opened, or the Song of Time itself, which saves all masks and major items collected, people helped, etc.

I strongly urge anyone that enjoyed Ocarina of Time to at least play through Majora's Mask. I can guarantee that it will certainly be a worthwhile experience.

The Best Zelda ever!

This is the best Zelda game ever! IF you wear a Deku Nut mask you can air glide, if you wear a Goron mask you can roll into a ball and roll at high speed, and if you wear a Zora mask you can swim at high speed. The Best Game!
