I have been a player and fan of the Zelda series since 1986... remember when ads for the first game appeared (ever seen them? some weird guy in a blackturtle neck acting VERY strangely... mix Saved By The Bell's Screech with Emo Philips)? I digress.

Majora's Mask has been (for me) thus far the most addicting and most engaging game of the entire series. Trust me, that is saying something. It took all of the good elements of Ocarina of Time, sifted out the annoyances, and constructed a brilliant game from the skeletal remains.

Some people have complained that it is somewhat unoriginal in certain gameplay respects. I agree, but this is a boon, not a complaint!!! By building on an existing gameplay model, Majora's Mask can get into the meat of the game from 6 am day one. None of those obnoxious tutorials you were forced to go through in the past here. This is a trial by fire.

More importantly, it is fun; the time concept keeps you on your toes enough to make you plan ahead, but you still have enough time to explore and discover. The system allows enough flexibility that rarely do you feel like you can't accomplish what you need to do - as long as you plan.

That, too, is part of what makes Zelda great (in general, but even more so in Majora's Mask). If you think ahead enough and stratagize, you can accomplish a lot every time you continue your file; however, while many RPGs allow that, Zelda also is very action based, which keeps it exciting on a basic level, a more fundamental level than Napoleonic strategy. The Zelda series is the only one that so far has the best of all worlds in that respect.

Finally, on a subjective note, I love the darker feel of this game. Ocinara of Time was too cheery (except when an adult) for me, and no game in the series has been so directly creepy since the second game (The Adventure of Link)... ok, and SOME elements of A Link To The Past (though it was too cartoony in the dark world to ever really feel nervous). This is a scary game. And what better thing can a game do than move us emotionally?

True to Zelda Style, but too short

Only four dungeons? Come on! Well, I guess Beneath The Well and Ikana Castle could be labled a dungeon...but didn't we have a Beneath the Well in Ocarina of Time?

This Zelda game has a Zelda plot, but it's not as good. One reason may be that you're not in Hyrule, you're in Termina. Or maybe because I've found the Zelda Games with Ganon in them to be a little worse than the ones WITH Ganon in them.

I did like, in MM, the Masks. I thought it was great how you can get these different masks, some which make you run faster, one that makes you speak to frogs. Some are only one time uses. others have a long lasting quality.

In Majoras Mask, you are supposed to help the Happy mask Shop Guy (From Ocarina of Time) get this one mask back from the Skull Kid (Also from Ocarina of Time) because it's got this deadly force. Only, the catch is, this moons about to hit Clock Town (The kakariko Village equivalent in MM) in three days. You have three days to get the mask. Now, any Zelda fan knows, that's impossible. One hour is equal to one minute in the real world, so you have 72 minutes to do as much as possible before you warp back to the first day and lose all your rupees, arrows, bombs...EVERYTHING, including Dungeon Maps, Keys, and Compasses. Ah ha! That's where the game starts becoming difficult. Now, if only there were the normal eight or seven dungeons, this game would be perfect. Instead, to make up for the loss of dungeons, the producers packed side quests, mask findings, and the Bombers Notebook into this game. I'll give it this, is does make the game harder, but still, it's not quite up to par with the rest. But still not as bad as the Adventure of Link or Links Awakening

Poor, Poor Zelda Game

This game right here is Zeldas downfall. After playing all other Zelda games and just completing Ocarina of Time(which IS a very good game)I heard about a new one coming out. I was very excited and couldent wait. Once it did come out I rushed to the store bought it, rushed back, tore it out, put it in the N64, turned it on and was expeting to be transfixed in a game that comes from the best series for a few hours(atleast). What did happen was once I started playing it my spirit started dropping lower and lower. I saw just how different this was then Ocarina of Time, or any other Zelda game. I was very annoyed by the time limit and how you had to play games to keep going, and before I bought this game I was really happy about the thought of transforming into different creatures but when it did happen I was not stunned. About an hour or two into this game I just gave up. About every other day I played it but was still not happy. Every time I started to play I got very unhappy just thinking about what was going to happen rather then the good, happy, determined feeling I got while playing Ocarina of Time or all the other Zelda games. So after a week I sold it. There went six months of thoughts and saving up for what should of been the best game yet. So as I said before this game is the downfall of the Zelda series and shows us a glimps of what Zelda will be like from now on. I mean come on what next a Zelda with Cel shading?

(In case you didnt understand that was a joke about the new Zelda game coming out for Gamecube that is, yes in cell shading

A good game although somewhat disapointing...

If all you want is more of the same then this is the game for you. It has the same characters (with different names) and basically the same layout (the field, the temples and towns). This game, while actually being more difficult, does not offer the same fun sense of challenge as Ocarina of Time. There may be a new storyline, but it feels like the same game all over again to me. The problems I have are this: I am not happy that I HAD to buy the player's guide, because this game is so confusing. I got so lost that I had to delete my file and restart because I had no idea where I was and what I was doing. Second, the saving function is terrble. I had to watch my brother's disapointment and sadness because he had forgotten to save at one of those ridiculous owls and had to start ALL OVER AGAIN...TWICE!!! Presumably, this is a child's game and if this game is so confusing that an adult (me) can not follow it, it is too difficult. However, I don't mean to sound that it is all bad. The mask transformations and the story are interesting. I guess I just expected more considering the quality of the first game.

I have said before that I think Ocarina of Time is an overall better game because of it's "definitiveness" in the Zelda series. But the more I play Majora's Mask and the more I uncover the depth and complexity of its plot, I sometimes wonder about that opinion. MM is truly the most innovative and unique game I have ever played, and this is due to its impressive structure. You probably already know that you must relive the same three days in order to solve the mystery of the mask, but what is not readily apparent from this premise is the extremely deep plot that materializes from it. I have already beat the main game, but there are still many puzzles left to solve that are just as involved and challenging as any of the "main game" puzzles. OoT has side quests, but nothing to this extent. The ability to observe people from different locations and at different times (over and over again) reveals endless plot points that would not be possible in a linear game. I am still finding new things from this game, more than a year later, and it is still not completely done.

I have also mentioned, in my review of OoT, that a down-side to MM is that you have to move quickly in order to accomplish your goals in three days before you have to start a new cycle. While you aren't usually "rushed," it is a bit frustrating that you can't do some things leisurely, like go slowly through the dungeons. But despite this, I really believe there is plenty of time to do what needs to be done, and there will *always* be time to explore and discover the seemingly endless secrets of this game!

Amazing

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the follow up to the best game ever made, Ocarina of Time is almost as good as OoT. The ONLY downfall of this game is how you are young Link for the entire game (until you recover Fierce Diety's mask which you can only use when you are fighting a temple boss).
The best part of this game is that you can change forms. You start off the game with Link but are quickly transformed into a Deku Shrub, other forms include the Zora and the Goron. Though you can also transform into a GIANT Link but only when fighting Twin Mold. Each transformation mask has its advantages and disadvantages.
The Deku Shrub runs fast but cannot swim or go near flames for it will die. You have about 5 jumps on the water before the shrub falls in and dies. The shrub can also get to high places where deku flowers lie.
The Zora can swim like you won't believe, probably one of the funnest parts is swimming with the Zora. The Zora cannot run very fast.
The Goron is probably the best because you can move really fast with him. The rolling Goron is so fun, you can roll through the field collecting items and rupees more quickly than with anyone, including Epona.
One of the best parts of this game is all the masks that you have to collect to actually beat the game (for you trade in the masks to kids in the moon to get to Majora or the Skull Kid). All the masks have some importance whether it's an advantage to help Link run faster (the bunny hood) or just to get you a heart piece (the couple's mask).
Each temple you have to use a certain mask, for the first you must be the deku shrub for you are cursed and there is NO way of transforming to Link. A shorter temple but still great in the puzzles. Snowhead Temple requires some work from the Goron, Great Bay temple requires the Zora and the Stone temple requires mostly Link but you will need the others.
A must play and a great Zelda game, the perfect edition to any Nintendo collection.

Save the World by Stopping the Moon

Since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was such a fantastic video game and I was actually able to beat it, I waited for this next installment with nothing less than the greatest anticipation. Unlike Hollywood films, Nintendo game sequels are typically superior to their predecessors, and this title is no exception!

The premise of this latest adventure is that the mischievous Skullkid (a character with a minor role in the previous game) steals Link's magical ocarina and horse in order to rule the parallel world of Termina. Link gives chase and descends through a rabbit hole similar to that of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland", finding himself in an even more magical world than Hyrule. Since the mysterious Skullkid has a head start, he is able to rob the Happy Mask Salesman of Majora's mask, the most powerfully evil mask in existence. It gives him incredible magic which he uses to disrupt people's lives, bring monsters to the once peaceful land, lock away the Guardians' spirits and most terrifyingly important, cause the lonely moon to become angry and crash into the world in only three days. And this is where the game goes where no video games has gone before.

Time is of the essence as Link has only three days to save the world and complete countless quests in order to set things right again. But don't lose heart (no pun intended) because, aided by the powerful Ocarina of Time that he quickly wins back and a plethora of masks to wear, Link can alter time by slowing it down, speeding it up and ultimately reliving the three days over and over again. Thankfully, though, he is able to keep the major items he earns and even remember the songs he learns in his quest, but more insignificant items like arrows, bombs and rupees are lost when time is reset. And all the people he has spoken to forget they ever met him. But Link keeps track of all these side-quests in the Bomber's Notebook.

Amazingly, the graphics in Majora's Mask are comparable to those rendered by the newest video game systems, and the virtual world of Termina covers more digital square miles than its sister-world of Hyrule. Plus, to a die-hard Zelda fan's delight, the overworld music has returned with a new beat when Link explores the areas outside Clocktown. And, luckily, the Z-targeting feature has been carried over from the previous game.

I am also fascinated with the game developers' use of masks in this new adventure. It is reminiscent of primitive Earth cultures that wore different masks to metaphorically transform themselves into whatever was symbolic of their facial costumes.

I've been playing Majora's mask for more than a month now and am not even halfway through this IMMENSE adventure. Let me tell you that the cinematic scenes, graphically rich and diverse environments and the SCREAMING mask transformations never fail to amaze me! The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask definitely has INFINITE replay value!

P.S. Many are complaining about the three-day time constraint in the game and the loss of rupees when returning to the dawn of the first day. Well, all you have to do is play either the song of inverted time or the song of double time to manipulate the clock to your benefit. And if you save your rupees at the bank in Clocktown before going back in time, they will be there the next time, even earning interest.

Like most Zelda adventures, this one REQUIRES a strategy guide. You'd have to be a genius or at least one of the game's programmers to stop the moon without one. I recommend those published by BRADYGAMES or Nintendo.

I must admit, when I played the Ocarina of Time I was rather disappointed. Yes, the game play and the size were there, but, it was just missing something. It was all a little too easy for me, and too serious. I realize that a lot of pressure was on the team to produce the definitive Zelda game, and I think they got a little nervous.
Now that they could relax, they could produce a real gem, the best Zelda game I have ever seen. It is called Majora's Mask. By every account, it should seem a failure. There are only four dungeons, Ganondorf is not the chief opponent, and for what it's worth the game is rather short, and features most of the same characters from Ocarina of Time.
But trust me, it's not. This game is beautiful. The character interractions are unparalleled, and the game can produces real emotion. The peak of this comes when you reunite the seperated lovers Anju and Kafei after an extremely complex series of events, which begins with the simple deliverance of a letter, and ends with a raid on the hideout of Sakon.
The game is funny too. Tatl is a bad-mouthed fairy who has a few more things to say than Navi ever did. Re-Dead's dance the Cossack Dance. There's a lazy temp guy in the Clock Town shop sometimes. And of course, who can forget Tingle the Fairy.
But what about the dungeouns? They're awesome. While the first two are fairly easy, the Great Bay and Stone Tower Dungeon will drive you nuts as you look for the scattered fairies to give you upgrades.
And of course, the masks are awesome. Aside from the regular masks, you have your transformation masks. Ever wanted to race with Gorons, or swim like a Zora? The effects are absolutely amazing. And there's also a forth transformation mask with effects that are nothing short of divine...
All in all, Majora's Mask far outclasses Ocarina of Time with the real emotions it displays, it's humor, and the fact that the dungeons are really fun to explore. The three-day time limit gives a sense of urgency and drama to the game, and really adds a lot to the play. Especially when you've got thirty seconds to go, and the screen starts flashing red! This is a must have for not only Zelda fans, but anyone who has an N64.
