A Word of Caution!

This is just a warning to everyone out there planning to buy this game, it REQUIRES the N64 Expansion Pack to play. If you don't have it, you can't run this game!!! So you have to buy that too. The product information doesn't mention that anywhere. But hey, if the pics I've seen are any indication, it will be worth the extra money.

I was just old enough to appreciate what the NES and the Zelda series did for the gaming world when they first came out. I believe the first Zelda game The Legend of Zelda to be the pioneer of puzzle solving action adventure games all wrapped up in one. Each Zelda game has gotten better over the years and Majora's Mask is no different.

Dont get me wrong Ocrina of Time of a great game but Majora's Mask in one word is better. The game has a more in depth plot more interaction with the other characters in the game and is much more of a challege. Ive heard all the complaints. First the 72 "hour" thing- Its to frustrating to start over all the time or to hard. Since when is a game supposed to be easy. The starting over all the time ads to the challenge and excitment. How many out there who have to game have raced to complete a puzzle or ovjective before the clock ran to zero. It is frustrating to have to start over all the time but there is plenty of time to finish all the dungeons or anything else in the game in those 72 hours. Dont want to start a dungeon over dont go into it on the middle of the second day. Zelda games werent meant to be easy. They are supposed to be challenging and meant to be played without a players guide because the Zelda serier is based on puzzles and exploration. If you know everything with a players guide wheres the excitment of discovery. We have people complaining about the time limit then others complaining that you cant get into the game unless you play for like 5-6 hours. Huh first its to short of a time then to long. I thing some gamers are just lazy these days. To picky. Then oh we cant save every second like you could in ocrina of time. No not every second but just about. Play song of time save start at the beginning of the first day. Or use the owl statues. With them you can save at anytime. And oh gee we lose all of our usable items when we start the time over. Is it that tough to go out of town and cut a bush to get more arrows and bombs. If it is then go to a shop and buy some more. If you have ever noticed you almost always get what you need from a pot or bush you break or cut. Need a heart it will be there. Need nothing you get money. Now character interaction. Majora's Mask lets you interact with the other people. Solve their problems even get to know them. I could sit here and talk all day about how Majora's Mask is better than Ocrina of time but to really believe you have to get the game and play. you ll understand when you do. 5 stars isnt enough for this game. A definite buy worth your money. True Zelda fans and true gamers who can appreciate every aspect of a game will love this game.

Not Quite Ocarina of Time but a worthy Zelda game

This game is indeed a welcome addition to the Zelda series begun on the 8-bit Nintendo. Many reviewers have criticized it for not being as good as its predecessor the Ocarina of Time. Perhaps it is not. In like fashion to the Adventure of Link for the 8-bit Nintendo, Majora's Mask had some big shoes to fill as the sequel of one of the best video games for any system in history. Also, I would argue that usually the very idea of sequels in video games is somewhat a hacknyed attempt to make money.

However, because of its innovations: the time limit, central world view from Clock Town, transmutation through masks, sub quests, etc. I actually found it amusing that so many have complained about the time limit, since one can use the song of time inversion to slow the time by half its normal speed. A decent player should be able to complete any of the dungeons by the mid part of teh second day by playing this song (learned from the resident scarecrows of Clock Town). The quest for the fairies in the dungeons is an additional interesting twist emplyed for the acquisition of Link's various abilities. I would agree with some who have claimed that the storyline is not as good as Ocarina of Time, although the interconnectedness of the various events within the subquests of Clock Town and Romani Ranch is impressive.

All in all, I would unfortunately NOT recommend this game (even less, in fact, than its predecessor), to younger children, the every age group to which it is likely to have the most appeal. They are unlikely to have the patience to solve the intricate puzzles of Clock Town within the required time frames. The dungeons here also, with the exception of the annoyingly constant raising of the water levels in the Ocarina of Time, are also more difficult, and often require several levels of thought using several different implements in order to achieve an objective. Anyone who has the patience, however, should fine it a worthy sequel to the tremendous success achieved by the Ocarina of Time

Actually Better than The Ocarina of Time!

Majora's Mask is Actually Better than The Ocarina of Time! Hard to believe since TOOT was a gaming masterpiece but with the introduction of the time limit before game over (don't worry because you CAN time travail backward!), new characters, transformation masks and excellent new story there is very little room for improvement! This is a must-buy!

Don't Believe The Last Few Reviews, This Game Rocks!!!

First off, i'd like to say that Majora's Mask is a FANTASTIC sequel to Ocarina of Time. It is a bit hard at first, but once you learn what to do, you'll find yourself playing this game for hours. Once again, the game is VERY HARD, so I suggest getting a strategy guide to help you along. My one complaint with Majora's mask is that it is a bit of A SHORT GAME. IT ONLY HAS FOUR TEMPLES, which is a miniscule amount, compared to Ocarina's 8 Temples (9 if you include Ganon's Tower). The story-line of Majora's mask also hits you harder than Ocarina's, and is more dark and surreal, seeing as the story eventually leads to a potential apocalypse. In the end, Majora's Mask is a solid entry in the franchise, and should enjoy a treasured spot in you'r collection. Also, if you own a Wii, Majora's Mask is a title Nintendo is considering for the Virtual Console. But that may take months, so either wait, or buy the N64 version. One more thing, that kid who wrote a review saying that this game feels like Disney's midquels, is a total IDIOT and probaly only played some of Orcarina of Time, because once you complete Ocarina of Time, in the ending cutscene, Zelda tells Link that she would return him to his original time, which is Link's childhood. This explains the reason why Link is a child in this game as opposed to a adult.

Not what i expected...

When I first finished Ocarina of Time I felt it was probably one of the best video games ever, so of course i was excited when i got Majora's Mask. It started off being a lot of fun, but I soon realized it was not going to be as good as the Ocarina of Time. First of all, everything is exactly the same as OoT, i mean EXACTLY, you get the same items, same weapons, talk to the same people and after a while it seems like there is no difference between the two. I mean, they could have at least thought of some new types of creatures or something and new items, but we are stuck with the gorons and zoras and the hookshot and the bow and arrow all over again. Second of all, the way to save on this game is pretty bad, I ended up having to do things 2 or 3 times because I could not save it right and it got pretty frustrating. It takes like 5-10 mins just to find a good place to save. In OoT you could just pause and save at the point you are at and immediately quit. Where is that feature in this game? It would be much more helpful. I would think tho, that most people would get a lot of enjoyment out of the game, especially if you liked the OoT. Oh and one more thing, this game only gives you 2 save slots, so you can only have 2 games going at once, as opposed to the 3 you could have in OoT.

Best Game Scince The Original

I, personaly loved the game. The sound on MM is incredible, even for the N64. This game , unlike OoT, is a huge challenge. You relearn songs, meet intreuging people, solve their problems, AND on top of all that, you have to save the world. All in 72 hours. With the "hidden" codes that the scarecrow teaches you, it helps relieve the burden. The Legend of Zelda; Majora's Mask is the best game I've played in a long time, at least on the N64.

Looks like another "Game of the Year" for the Zelda Crew

I usually dislike spending so much for N64 games, but this is one of the few where you get your money's worth. And please, don't be tempted to rush to the player's guides and newsgroups for hints as soon as you get the game, because you will be defeating the purpose of playing this, or any, Zelda game: solving the fabulous puzzles!

From everything I've seen so far, the major complaint on this game is the 72 "hour" time limit to solve a certain task, and then you lose a lot of things like rupees, bombs, progress through a temple, etc. I will admit that this can be very frustrating at first. But the time limit makes the entire game one big "puzzle" that needs to be solved in the right order and stage, to be done successfully. The temples themselves are not as lengthy or complex as in OoT (Water Temple, anyone?), which helps to offset the problems with resetting the clock. All in all, this is a great game. The polygon-based graphics are much smoother than in the last game, and the game designers thankfully didn't change any of the fundamental gameplay mechanics.

To summarize, if you aren't into solving intense puzzles then this game probably isn't for you. It also probably isn't for younger kids. But if you like to challenge your intellect and "think outside of the box," then you will become immersed in this game. Buy it!

As great as Ocarina of Time!

This is one of my favorite Zelda games! Yes, it's complex sometimes, but it's still excellent! My brother beat it after 6 years, and it was very much worth watching him! I've had fun playing it myself, even if I haven't gone far. The music is VERY catchy, and one of my favorite things in the game was the masks. They all gave you super cool abilities (at least MOST of them). You've just gotta play it!

In MM you can have over 20 masks, each with different powers. you can become invisible, dance, talk to stones, command chickens and dogs to follow you, become a giant and turn into three different species of "people". you can become a deku( a plant like creature) a Goran( a rock like creature) or a Zora( a fish like creature. Each have special powers which are really cool. you can fly, become a boulder and roll or swin faster than thae fishes. There are also fun sidequests. Some songs are also repeated from OOT. And of course, Epona is back!
