I just completed the game and have to say it's one of the best games i've ever played on any console. It's one of those games that pulls you into that world. But it didn't start out like that When i first started playing I thought i had just wasted [my money]. I hated the battle system and couldn't get use to it. But stuck with it and as my character continued to develop Battle became easier to use and understand. After that i was sucked into the star wars world. In every aspect of the game you feel like anything you do or say will have an effect on you and the story. I'm not going to ruin it for some by going to much into the story but It's a great story with a jaw dropping twist towards the end.The Graphics are by no means spectacular(but in some parts are) But they work. The gameplay like i said takes a little to get use to especially the fighting. Plenty of replay value. This is a game that you can complete in about 30 hours or 60-70 if you choose to do all the side quest. And then their is the force. What side will you choose? The first time i played the light side i'm now playing it again but on the dark side. And already i can see a change in the story and my character. Now for the only bad part. Bugs, No not Bug creatures in the game. Bugs as in the game freezes up... ALOT. This doesn't happen to everyone but this game froze up more then any 5 games put together that i've ever played. That's why only 4 stars and not 5. BUT another great thing is that you can save the game anytime you want and it will pick up exactly where you left off..So do it Often. But an example of how buggy this game can be...I finished my first game in about 32 hours but according to my file i finished it in 155654 hours. lol
An epic game filled with love, combat, and mysteries

I was sceptical at first, since most star wars games were, well, pretty bad (accept the x-wing/tie fighter and Jedi outcast games). And watching Lucas Arts try a morrowind esque game was a little scary... however... I was hit like Iraq, namely i was shocked, and awed. Every single character has a story, every single character has side missions for them, and there are even gratuitous alien sex scenes! (just kidding). I played this game literally, non stop, for three days non stop, 36 hours in a 72 hour time frame, almost two days of constant play. And i want to do it all over again, and i will, but sleep will be in order this time.
Pretty good

this is an excellent game, I cant seem to get enough of it. When I first heard about the game I thought that it would be another jedi knight, and for that i was pretty excited about the game. I decided to read some reviews before i bought the game and when i learned that "RPG" stood for Role Playing Game, i had my doubts that I would have any interist in the game because I'm not a very big RPG fan. So i rented it and I thought it was okay but by the time i got on Taris I became addicted to the game and it only gets better as soon as you get your light saber. Now I have had the game for a week and a half, I'v already gone through the game once as a servent of the light and now i keep thinking of new ways to go through it again and again. I noticed that some people were disappointed with the combat but they probably didnt play the game long enough to fully understand how to control the combat. I'm going through the game a second time and I'still learing things. Over all, i recommend this game to any rpg fan, and even if your not you should still rent it.
I'm NOT an RPG fan whatsoever!...

As I said in the title I'm NOT! I don't understand them and I don't understand how some people get so involved in them, but I must say that this game is different. I guess technically this game is an RPG, but by all means DON'T let that scare you. I won't go into all the little nerdy details about why this is an outstanding piece of work, it just is! It's a very deep game with beautiful graphics and some of the best sound I've ever heard on any video game period. The creators did a marvelous job of bringing a fictitious world(s) and story to life and it's extremely easy to get sucked into all of it! Like I said don't be put off because this is considered an RPG, anyone who just appreciates a great video game can pick this up and understand what's going on in no time. Games on this level that are fun for all groups of gamers don't come along very often...

I have to admit I was worried about this game. Star Wars Galaxies was so awful, so boring, so NOT STAR WARS that I was worried that whatever deadly bug contracted by Sony might have spread through LucasArts and from there to Bioware. But joy upon joys: Bioware has released one fantastic Star Wars game.
Knight of the Old Republic is set thousands of years before the Star Wars movies we know and love. But The Republic is old even in these early times; over 20,000 years old. This creates a feeling of antiquity as well as newness, and that's a neat trick. Bioware deserves credit for not making the events in the game feel too old or new.
Star Wars fans will delight in the added history of Lucas's far away galaxy. The game takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, and the player encounters disenfranchised Mandolorians and war refugees. The Sith are also enemies, recently returned after they were thought to be defeated. The Sith are an overt threat and many Jedi are willfully joining their ranks. The player is plunged into these troubled times and has great influence over the conflict.
Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars game system. Anyone who has played D&D will be familiar with the abilities, stats, feats, and bonuses in this game. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are a host of other characters including Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a mandolorian. Up to two of these other characters can join your character at any time. Combat is "real-time turn-based", meaning the turns are seamless and occur "behind the scenes". The player can pause the action at any time to issue orders or direct any of his characters to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item.
The graphics are a mixed bag. Building and character models are merely adequate, about what you can get on the best looking PlayStation 2 games. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and textures) are impressive. Battles are just brilliant, with characters pumping out blaster fire at Jedi who dash, dodge, and even deflect the bolts back toward their assailants. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars.
The plot is the best part of the game. Without going into Spoiler-filled detail, the plot revolves around your character and a Jedi companion named Bastila. Bastila has developed a rare Jedi talent called Battle Meditation, which enables her to demoralize enemy troops and bolster allied fighters during huge battles. Her talent can swing the tide of combat, and the Sith fear and desire her. Your character has a mystical connection to Bastila, and the two of you share some kind of connection to the main Sith villains Darth Malak and Darth Revan. The game's planet-hopping adventures deal with your exploration of these connections and their significance, as well as side quest minor (such as discovering the back stories of you other companions) and major (such as discovering the way the banished Sith managed to return with so much strength).
All in all, this is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming that looks even better in light of Star Wars Galaxies' bitter disappointment.
A must have for any Xbox owner or Star Wars fan.

There have been various reports on this title ranging from...excellent to a possible Game of the Year. The latter is my choice, so far...let's see what Final Fantasy X-2, XI deliver in terms of gameplay.
I bought this game after following its production for about a year and still had been suspicious of exactly how Bioware and Lucasarts would pull off an RPG of this proportion on a video game console. Simply, they did and in an astonishing way with a universe we love, know, and now find out...didn't know in a lot of respects.
Star Wars has been a franchise that like, Star Trek, couldn't produce real good games aside from Jedi Knight series, X-Wing series, and ... for just futuristic racing ala F-Zero "Podracer" and X-Wing clone "Starfighter."
With all that aside, let me jump into KOTOR. Up front I will tell you that there is a slight problem with framerate which you will see on just about any review you'll look at. It's not a total detractor from the game and happens rarely, but it was to be expected with a game this immense and detailed. Other reviews nitpick the fact that some of the graphics are not up to Halo's standards and that we get to see familiar characters (civilians and other people you'll meet or whatnot) repeated. Well, I guess that shoots a hole in the barrel doesn't it? Not exactly.
To understand the graphics and repeat "lookalike" characters, you'll have to understand something, this game is huge and very long and deep. Of course there are going to be the glitches (it froze once on me and my XBOX is 4 weeks old, so I know it wasn't the hardware *note: Freezing games has been an annoyance since the old NES) when you have so much inside a story. Most of the graphics can hold well with Halo, especially the back drops and certainly the cutscenes which make your journey worthwhile. Repeating characters, well...this isn't Everquest or a short game where everyone could be drawn from scratch. There's plenty of characters and over 50 voice talents lending 14,000+ spoken dialogue. Also, these worlds are huge and complex, the exploration and interaction alone will give you hours of fun. When you look up, you'll notice you have a long way to go and are probably on the same planet.
KOTOR uses everything it can from the XBOX's impressive hardware to bring this story and all the world's to life. There's side-quest's galore and a galaxy including many planets and races. I'm sure you're wondering why I'm not giving away spoilers. Fact is, there's a lot to do depending on what you do. You can balance your light/dark side or follow the extreme on either side of the Force. I don't want to spoil the game because once you start to play it, you'll be in it and also, I hate being told the whole gist of a movie/game/whatever before I get my hands on it or see it.
Graphics: 9.8 - Well designed world's, backdrops, character models and feel.
Gameplay: 9.8 - It'll take you a bit to get used to the RPG feel (if you are new to it) and there is a learning curve on the real time-turn based fighting system (of all the things, and that's not a typo by the way, it is a well done and satisfying mix between action-adventure and RPG style). The cameras, except for a few occasions, are spot on and the overall feel of the game is impressive. Moving and exploring, meeting people and choosing what you do (as this is not a linear game, although it has a plot) make for a great game.
Sound: 10 - New and original music, authentic sounds and the spoken dialogue keep the atmosphere real. My suggestion is that you hook the XBOX to your 5.1 surround stereo or listen with a good set of digital headphones.
Overall: I'm leaning towards the "Game of the Year" for this and certainly, this is the finest Star Wars title to grace a console system...possible, ever. If you're a deep Warsian fan or an RPG addict, this is one you will play and replay to experience all 3+ ways of playing it (light, dark side, mix). Remember, what you do determines your destiny.
"May the Force be with you...always."

This game is the reason I bought an XBox. I love Star Wars, and I love RPGs. Based on screenshots and word of mouth, I decided to take a chance on this game. I was not disappointed.
You can choose from 3 character types, male or female. As you progress through the game, you meet up with 8 other characters (e.g. Jedi, droids, a Wookie) whom you control at various times.
Depending on the choices you make, you will choose a side of the "force". There are two distinct endings, based on whether you are on the "light" side or the "dark" side.
The graphics are stellar, the play is not purely linear, and there are plenty of optional side quests to keep veteran gamers interested.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game!

Bioware is known for offering the best in RPG titles. KoTOR is no exception. The storyline is intriguing, varied, and broad in scope. The implementation of the 3rd edition SWRPG rules is impeccable.
My only lament is that the only real re-playability comes in the form of good vs. evil. If you play light side then you can go back and play dark side (and vice versa). This is actually quite interesting (and both options offer complex endings) but unfortunately most of the gameplay is identical regardless of which side you are on.
No Collection is complete.

IF you are a fan of the Star Wars universe, this is the game you have been dreaming of ever since the "a long time ago...." popped up on the screen in 1977. If you are an RPG fan, This game is the game you have been hoping for the xbox. If you like gaming in general, this is the game. I have been playing for a few hours, and no game has been more engrossing. The dialogue, the graphics, the storyline, the missions, the characters, the gameplay, and anything else is nothing like i have ever played before, and no game has captured star wars like this. Thank you Bioware.

Playing this game was the greatest Star Wars experience I have had scince I was a five year old watching Empire Strikes Back when it was first released. There were literally moments when I felt the same innocent exhuberence which would course through me as I ran through the halls of my house, Kenner X-Wing in hand.
Now about the critiques I have read here, I do understand where some of the people are comming from - in some sense - this is not a Roll Playing Game. It is as Wired implied, and interactive movie. The fun is not in the shooting of people, or the executing of moves, or pressing A-B-A X-Y as fast as possible. The fun is making choices, and experiencing the story, and sitting there on the floor, actually experiencing emotion as you would in a movie, as the plot lets loose its twist upon you.
Don't expect "cool" don't expect "edgy" - expect what you should have always expected from Star Wars - Fun.
