Worst Game of the Year Award!

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 7 / 73
Date: May 29, 2005
Author: Amazon User

What a sad way to start the year indeed. As a true Resident Evil fan and an old-time gamer, I expected more from Capcom. But as it turned out, this was the biggest flop in the Resident Evil saga since Dead Aim and Outbreak.

Where to start? First and most important of all is the fact that this is NOT a true Resident Evil game despite the veil which has been vested upon it to decieve the gamer.

Graphics: This is an important element in games at this point in video game history, especially since it was released for the Nintendo Gamecube system. The graphics are not as good as you'd might expect. Resident Evil for GC and Resident Evil 0 have better graphics than this game. I would've sacrificed graphics for having a a good Resident Evil game, but RE4 can't even deliver the former, much less a decent game. The camera now navigates with you, however I feel that the fixed camera is much better and much more challenging than its counterpart. It is a key element of Resident Evil; a trademark of the series if you must.

Story: This is NOT a Resident Evil game. The ONLY way to even remotely relate the Resident Evil epic tale to this game is through two of its characters: Leon Kennedy and Ada Wong. This is the only element in the game that relates to Resident Evil. Without these two well known names the game would collapse and its true facade would be exposed and, of course, would have a very different title. Secondly, it lacks the KEY element of Resident Evil: zombies and Umbrella! There are zombie-like creatures in this game but they are being controlled by a cult. Yes, I know what you're thinking, what does this have to do with Resident Evil? Well, absolutely nothing. The plot of the game is as follows:

Leon Kennedy travels to a village in Europe(in Spain) to rescue the President's daughter who was kidnapped by this cult striving for world domination.

Sound like Resident Evil? The setting takes place in a remote, rural area, a castle, and an island. The game gives you the feeling that you are in medieval times, which is fun, except that the story takes place in 2004. Oops! About the only time you realize you're in modern times is in the latter part of the game. The story is only half decent if it stands by itself. It mediocre, simple, and boring.

Gameplay: You can now buy weapons from a mystical, hooded creature with a deformed face, red eyes, claws and a weird sense of humor, who sets up shop everywhere you go and who happens to own every weapon necessary to progress through the game. He also sets up a shooting range for target practice that is so comical it completely throws out the window the supposed, illusional fear factor of the game. Of course, you'll need money to purchase and upgrade firearms, surely enough you can find money scattered throughout the land and by killing villagers and other creatures. Oh and the game plays in a wide-screen video format; like a movie, "wow"... The main problem with gameplay is the fact that you are LED by the hand throughout the entire game. Long gone are the days where you scanned through a room or area searching for items, this game tells you when to press the A button for items or to jump, duck, etc. You are able to make decisions during cut scenes by franatically smashing the A button, or A+B or L+R...Oh how challenging!

The puzzles are elementary-school like--simple as the come. Let me give you and example: Take 4 foods; bread, meat, dessert, and a glass of wine. Let the game tell you the order in which they must stand by doing an analogy of life--from birth until death--and set up a shooting range with the pictures of these foods and let you shoot them in the correct order. The game even helps you out when you are to insert a key item into a hole; with key items such as circle emblems and recessions in the wall with the same shape, because it would be a shame not to be able to figure out where it goes. The menu even opens up automatically and points you to the item you are to use. This game is not challenging in this area.

Your mission: The main mission of the game is to rescue the president's daughter, so everything revolves around this prime objective, making the game boring. The bosses are very easy as you are given the opportunity to purchase a rocket launcher at any point in the game; again, mediocre. Even using upgradable weapons proves to be easy. Heck, I defeated the final boss with my trusty shotgun.

This game took a complete 180 degree turn and many of the the new elements are creative but THEY DO NOT STAY LOYAL TO "RESIDENT EVIL". I think this is the major flaw of the game, that it should not have been called Resident Evil 4 because of its separation from the parameters set by the series. Under a different title this game could have been more suitable for release, unfortunately, it won't enjoy much success for a long time. A good title for this game could've been "The President's Daughter" or "The Cult: The story of a guy named Leon who travels to a village to rescue the President's Daughter but has nothing to do with Resident Evil."

This game reminds me of every other action game out there, it's a carbon copy of Doom. It also borrows many elements from Resident Evil:Dead Aim. What's worse of all is that the game ending leaves the plot open to continuation, so we can probably expect to see more of this piece of MEDIOCRITY.

Change might be good but only when it's for the best, unfortunaltely this is not the case with Resident Evil 4. The true Resident Evil 4 was Resident Evil Code:Veronica X as it is a direct sequel to previous Resident Evil games(By the way, RE:CVX is one of the best in the series and highly recommended). This just-released RE4 adds very little, if anything at all, to the story. Also, this games DOES NOT "fix any other problems that Resident Evil had" as another reviewer said, because it had not one worth mentioning. What problems? Camera angles? Get used to it. Too difficult to avoid enemy attacks? Not enough ammo? Not enough health items? If you can't handle the TRUE Resident Evil games then they are not for you.

If we were to rank all Resident Evil titles ever released from best to worst, RE4 would be at the bottom.

I highly recommend you AVOID this game if you are a Resident Evil gaming veteran or a fan of suvival horror.
Save your money. You've been warned.

no rating system high enough for this game...

In a word, Wow! I have played all the RE games in the series (some more than once or twice) and rate this one the best - not only of RE but of survival horror in general. I was leery about the lack of "zombies" in RE4 at first, but the freaky villagers and the chainsaw guy - oh, Lord, the chainsaw guy - gave me nightmares last night. They are far scarier (and more damage inflicting) than any "undead" creatures. I'm in the middle of chapter two - there are six all together - and it took me four hours of playing time to get there. Two of the coolest features of this game (other than the jaw-dropping 3D graphics and the elimination of typewriter cartridges, yea!) are the seamless controls and being able to continue at or near the spot you died (and you will die). I'm not a true gamer. I owned a PS2 after I heard about RE1, then bought a Gamecube after the series became exclusive for that console. But I do know a masterpiece when I see one. Thank you, Capcom, for giving me the opportunity to virtually experience true horror. Love, love, love this game!

here are some things i have noticed over the years; the nintendo gamecube got very good publicity at first,(why, because it deserved it), but then someone decides to call it a kiddy system because it was purple. k, its black, lets just forget the whole purple thing ever happened, it was released in black. sony and microsoft owners seem to enjoy writing bad reviews for gamecube games just to thwart further sales, and people always write bad reviews for the best games; many times without even playing/being able to play the game. i do not need to describe the gameplay to you, any other 5 star review describes it perfectly, but i will tell you that this is the most beautiful, well thought out game this console generation. halo 2 was way overhyped, gta3 isnt all that great, vc is great, but nowhere near as good as this, san andreas is good, but again, this is better. even my other favorite new game (half-life 2, which blows away halo 2 in every way)pales in comparison to this game. it is fun, it sounds and looks great, the conversational VO's are funny, but do add to the gameplay, and fit quite well. the weapons and responsive targeting system are the best in any 3rd person shooter, and there are so many upgradeables, unlockables, and hidden items that you could literally play for full days at a time without losing any interest. if you play games, if you dont play games, i dont care, get out(or just plain 'get') a 'cube out and buy this game, then proclaim its greatness to the world as i have done for you!

This is the best game ever, I want to make out with it.

Wow, this game is tighter than my undies. If you're playing this game and your friends invite you to go somewhere like play football or church or something and you go, you're an idiot. The first thing you'll notice about this game is it is beautiful, especially Leon's hair and the trees. It look way better than real life. I got so mad at real life graphics that I kicked a tree in the stomach when I stopped playing this game. Anyway, once you start blow/kick/suplexing off heads, you'll be so happy you might tinkle a little. It's hott, the heads EXPLODE if you hit them just right. There are so many sweet weapons you can use and upgrade, and more to unlock after the game is finished the first time (of like a thousand). If you're a kid, and your mom doesn't like you playing this game, leave home. Period. I was playing this and this homeless guy who always comes over and asks for gas money and shelter got upset at all the awesome gore of me shooting off zombie heads with a shotgun. I told him to go to heck, he's weak and doesn't deserve to have a home. I wished I coulda shot him in the head. Anyway, the unlockables are so rad. You can play 2 minigames after that consist of blowing off heads and stuff. The main story is really in depth, there is a cult of evil people who have FREAKING TENTACLE MONSTERS IN THEIR HEADS! and they kidnap the president's daughter (she does NOT look like the Bush twins, don't worry), so Leon (a hot guy) has to save her. More stuff happens, it's cool. Anyway, buy this game or you're weak!

Best RE game... Ever.

By far, this is the most fun I have had playing any RE game. The aiming is fantastic. And the camera angles make it way better than 'round the corner shots. Being able to shoot where you want is so great. A great upgrade. There are only two downfalls, in my view. They should have made it so you could crouch whenever you want, instead of selected places. And you should have been able to buy ammo from the merchant. But I am sure in the next RE they will put better things in.

Facists should stop imposing their skewed ethical code on others...

Second or third review below me, a young, and aparently brainwashed child was posting extreamly offensive comments about players of a certain game. I happen to know many fans of the series who are good people, and who would not allow the gaming world to affect real world behavior. I myself am a fan of the GTA series, and you dont see me running around lighting people on fire with a flame thrower or taking out helecopters with my bazooka, do you?

Now, im not saying, "Lets give every kid GTA and RE4!!!" because, yes, some are impressionable, and will kill, but that is the decision of the parent to allow their child to play a certain game, not the fascists who imposed their skewed ethical code to other people, and would not allow me to purchase the GTA doublepack from toys r us (which, i got accross the street for about 20 bucks cheaper, legally, ESRB ratings and sales rules are VOULANTARY).

In short, not everyone who playes a good game is the same, some may kill, but most wont, and it should not be governed to us generally, but on a case by case basis, a parental desicion, not a fascist one, And no, i do not worship satin, i happen to be very spiritual.

Oh yea, the game was okay, but it couldve been better.

Great game

Ok this game gives gamecube a good name sence all thats on gamecube is stupid mario and kid games. This one definately stands out. Some reason I dont like the other resident evil games but this one i enjoyed. Maybe its the fact that your not facing zombies instead. Now I am only 11 hours into the game which is on the second disk. I enjoyed the first disk a lot better sence it really wasnt zombies that pop out on you but the second disk started to get different with mutant creature types that have me playing a lot less. Its still a great game and the merchants that you can sell and buy or upgrade weapons is a great add in.

SUPERB!

This game is the most greatest game ever made for gamecube i mean the graphics are so realistic the enemies (for once) are not zombies there just regular people that are infected with los plagas (the cattle) and are controlled by a guy named lord saddler now how scary was it to face the chainsaw guy (dr. salvador) in the begining with only a shotgun and a pistol i didn't get a chance to kill him because he cut my head off twice so i just kept restarting and then he did not get into the house where i was oh and don't forget about the double bladed chainsaw man (mercenarie mode) who can cut your head clean off and does not stop at all until you kill him and there is a graphic scene involving luis can't tell more than it is gorey
