The Resident Evil games have been about an evil corporation, called Umbrella, that has been conducting experiments with biological weapons. A leak of one of their viruses in Raccoon City caused most of the citizens to turn into zombies. Leon S. Kennedy was driving into Raccoon for his first day as a cop when it was all starting. The rookie cop barely managed to get out alive. Four years later, Umbrella has fallen apart after their crimes were exposed, but the world still has its problems. The daughter of the president of the United States has disappeared somewhere in Spain. Leon, no longer a rookie, is sent in to investigate. This is where you start off in the game.
Resident Evil has lost much of what made it Resident Evil. You no longer face zombies, but instead, you fight parasite-infected Spaniards, called Ganados. They're faster and smarter than the zombies. Also, you no longer have fixed camera angles and clunky controls. You now have an over-the-shoulder view, so that you can just turn your character around and look up, down, left, right - wherever you need to. You hold the R button to raise your weapon, then aim and shoot. So, gamers who didn't like RE before because of the gameplay will now find a whole new game to try. This may make fans of non-fans, although some people may miss Umbrella and their zombies.
But, the monsters in this game aren't lacking. Mostly, you'll face mobs of Ganados. Many carry sickles or knives, but some of them have more dangerous weapons, like dynamite or a chainsaw. The chainsaw will kill you instantly, so you have to make sure they don't get close enough to use it. There are enemies beside Ganados, too. There is El Gigante, a giant ogre-type thing with a parasite in its back, and the Regenerator, a creature that can keep coming after you blow off body parts, due to its fast healing abilities.
I don't think RE4 is as scary as the other games. It's definitely exciting and challenging, but the atmosphere and the enemies aren't quite as frightening. An enemy like a giant fish isn't creative or scary, although that boss battle is made more interesting by the fact that you're in a boat and you have to fight with a harpoon. The only enemy that really freaked me out was the Regenerator. It twitches, makes strange sounds, and it's hard to kill. Plus, it has its own spooky music.
The variety of weapons in this game is good. You start out with a handgun, and you can find or buy a shotgun, a sniper rifle, a mine launcher, and other weapons. Once you get a weapon, you can upgrade it in areas of ammo capacity, power, firing speed, and reload speed. Or you can buy a new gun of that type, like a more powerful type of magnum. There are also three types of grenades (regular, incendiary, and flash). You can even throw eggs at enemies.
You can get some items from the environment. Chickens will lay eggs that can heal you if you eat it (or, like I said, you can throw them). You can also get eggs from snakes, money from crows, or you can kill a fish and take that to eat. There are treasures hidden around, too. There are jewels embedded in cavern walls, or ammo in bird nests in trees. If you spot them, you can shoot them down. There are bigger treasures for those who explore and try different paths, too. The jewels and treasures can be sold for Spanish money, so you can buy more weapons or increase the size of your inventory. All these transactions are made with a mysterious armsdealer in a trenchcoat, whom you meet pretty early in the game.
This RE is much more fast-paced than before. Besides being able to move more freely (not having to rotate in the direction you want to go) and shoot faster, you have tests of reflex. There are scenes where you might have to press a certain button to avoid death. For example, you might start walking down a descending path that has cliff walls on either side, when a couple of Ganados push a boulder down from the top. You have to press the A button as fast as you can to outrun the boulder, then suddenly press the B button to dodge the boulder when you get to the bottom of the path. Things like that make sure that you don't relax, even during a cutscene or when no enemies are in sight. But, if you aren't quick enough, these reflex sequences might keep you from progressing in the game until you become faster.
The graphics in this game are quite good. There is a lot of detail on each character's face and body, and in the environment. You almost feel like you're really there, in the dark tunnel, the hedge maze, or the castle interior. The sound is good, too. The voice-acting is done well and the sounds suit the weapons, animals, or enemies that are making them. The music can create a feeling of unease or danger at the appropriate moments.
The story and the characters in this game could have been better. The story doesn't leave much food for thought, like some of the other games have. There aren't many intriguing tidbits in the files, and the new characters aren't very interesting. The president's daughter is a pretty blonde with a whiney voice and an annoying personality. The bad guys are crazy and evil. The hero is tough and sexy, but says cheesy, predictable lines. There's really no depth in these characters.
But, the game makes up for this because of very fun gameplay. You can harm the Ganados in several ways, like bringing them to their knees and slamming their heads into the ground, blinding them and kicking them, or knocking them off heights to their deaths. I've played through the game a few times because I just enjoy killing those Ganados so much.
The replay value is good for other reasons, too. You can unlock three new types of weapons - a machine gun with infinite ammo, a rocket launcher with infinite ammo, and the Handcannon, a very powerful magnum that will kill almost anything in one shot that you can upgrade for infinite ammo. There are two minigames to unlock, too. There's Assignment Ada, where you play a female agent who is collecting samples of the parasite. And there's Mercenaries, where you play in four different areas to score as many points as possible, by killing Ganados in succession. You can unlock four special characters to play in Mercenaries by racking up enough points, and you get the Handcannon by earning even more points.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game, although I wasn't left with that special feeling that I get from a really good story. But there are few flaws, so buy it.

This game is way better then Halo 2, Half-Life 2, and MGS 3. If this was released a month earlier, it would have won the Game of the Year award. I've never played Resident Evil, but since I know the whole story, I don't need to. The story of Resident Evil 4 is a bit more different. Leon S. Kennedy (from Resident Evil 2) is sent to Europe to find the President's daughter. Soon, Leon finds out that there's more to the villagers and the Village Chief then what meets the 'eye'. Greatest game ever. (...)
Game of the Year? Try game of the Century.

This game will blow your mind, literally. This is by far the most entertaining and scariest of the Resident Evil series. It has flesh eating people, giant monsters, and great graphics. The gun system that is the best I've seen in any game; it makes it less a game of chance to acquire them and adds another element of tactics.
If you liked the other Resident Evil games, you will not be dissapointed with Resident Evil 4, so go out and buy it!
The best game I ever seen, Violent, fun and Amazing

All I have to say is this is probably the most fun of all the Resident Evil games. If you're new to the Resident Evil series, this is a good game to start with. With new features allowing you to carry over items from previous playthroughs, one in game minigame and two seperate minigames featuring some classic Resident Evil characters, the game's replay value is outstanding.
Many complaints center around the lack of difficulty. That may seem so for hardcore gamers but as a recreational gamer, I found it to be more than challenging enough. Once you clear the game on easy mode, you unlock Pro mode which is very challenging. Other complaints appear to be those dissatified with the change in format from the traditional Resident Evil games. I found the change refreshing. Many of the new features solved problems with previous games in this series and presented new challenges.
Capcom made great efforts to present the people and weapons as realistically as possible and the result is a game that makes you feel part of the action. The best are the realistic reloading of various weapons (my personal favorite is the Broken Butterfly).
All in all, this is a great game and a must have for any true Resident Evil fan.
Brilliant

OK LETS GET TO THEP POINT, RESIDENT EVIL 4 IS NOT RESIDENT EVIL.
ITS A NEWER,BETTER,FUNER,AND BLOODIER VERSION OF A RESIDENT EVIL GAME. IF YOU THINK THIS GAME SUCKS BECAUSE THERE'S NO

INSTEAD OF ZOMBIES AND MUTATIONS, ANGRY VILLAGERS,GOTHIC MONKS,
CREEPY SOLDIERS,A GIANT FISH,PARASITES,SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE THE CREEPER, AND TOUGH BOSSES AND PUZZLES. NOW LETS GET TO THE STORY, YOU PLAY AS LEON FROM RE2, YOU HAVE TO RESCUE THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER AKA:AN ANNOYING GIRL WHO TALKS FUNNY.
THE NEW THING IN HERE ARE UNLIMITED SAVES,BUYING GUNS,A FULL 3RD
PERSON VIEW WITH AN AIMING SYSTEM TO POP HEADS WITH. FORGET TAKING HELL TO SOLVE A PUZZLE OR GET A KEY LIKE IN THE OTHER GAMES, THESE ARE EASY BUT NOT TOO EASY. AND YOU FINALLY KNOW HOW TO SHAKE OFF AN ENEMY. ITS ALSO THE MOST INTENSE GAME YOULL EVER PLAY.

I played this game over and over because it became so addictive that i started to actually have nightmares about it and hell i'm 29 years old. I've also been an avid gamer since atari came out in the early 80's and i must admit things have gotten 10000 times more advanced than ever before. My problem is that its getting old, the publicizing of violence runs rapid throughout the world and we sit and entertain ourselves with it like its second nature. I got rid of this game twice because of the problems that its FUN started to cause me. When doom first hit the shelves in like 91 i thought wow this is great because it "looked" like a game, not the real dead. So as i see the future of gaming with the new PS3 and XBOX 360 on the horizon there are no suitable games for anyone younger than 17, every preview i've seen is war, fighting, killing and bloodbathed demons, i'll admit i like these kinds of games(to an extent). I just wish the gaming industry would slack off on these types of games and come up with more creative ideas. Games are at this time in 2005 and coming in 2006 getting "to" realistic and crossing the lines of fantasy and reality. So play this one at your own risk, just don't let it consume you as i did.

I'm going out on a limb here when I tell you that this game, Resident Evil 4, blew me away in everything I had expected it to be. Capcom listened to the fans and understood what the press of the fanbase wanted.
In Resident Evil 4, and I am referreing to the Gamecube version mind you, we pick up with a storyline not riddled with senseless zombies (Resident Evil Code Veronica) or mind numbing "Disturbing" scenes (Silent Hill 4). This game was all authentic in many aspects and it truly left you with the feeling that you had just been a part of something big.
I'm not knocking the PSX 2 port version of this game I just simply have not played it. This game kept me going with excellent graphics and sound, the storyline was innovative and the overall feel of the game was new fear. Something that Resident Evil Code Veronica lost somewhere in translation.
In closing I'd say stop reading this review and get out there and buy this game! It's a must have for any Survival Horror fan or people looking to have a cheap thrill.
