I have loved the RESIDENT EVIL series of games since the very beginning and have played all of them with varying degrees of satisfaction. After playing the dismal and boring "Resident Evil: Code Veronica X" on PS2, I was ready to give up on the whole series. It just wasn't fun anymore and had finally become boring, tired and repetitive.
Then came the Resident Evil remake for the GameCube which was superb in every way! Resident Evil Zero followed and was good too! So when I heard news of Resident Evil 4 for GameCube, my expectations were quite high. Well this game blew them and me away! Nintendo was using an ad a few months ago declaring "Believe the Hype!" and believe it you should!
This game has new but familiar controls but is no longer clunky and awkward like previous games on the PS and PS2. It features an over the shoulder camera angle which is great and makes precision aiming of your weapons possible. There are now action buttons to make your character kick, jump or dodge at key moments.
The music and sound effects are great and very spooky! Try not to get creeped out when you hear the cultist chanting and whispering or the disgusting breathing sound of the REGENARATOR monster for the first time! The voice acting, graphics, story, EVERYTHING is top notch in this game!
Being a huge movie fan for most of my life, I can see MANY influences and homages in this game. From Indiana Jones, The Road Warrior, Village of the Damned, The Thing, The Fly, ALIENS, Deep Rising, Rambo 3, PREDATOR, Lord of the Rings, Night of the Living Dead, The Pit and the Pendulum, WaterWorld, Escape from New York, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Matrix! Quite a wide variety of influences there, all rolled up to make one terrific game!
I won't give to much of the story details away except to say it stars LEON KENNEDY from "Resident Evil 2" who now works for the government and this game makes him into a real action hero! The story involves a religious cult and their parasitic creatures. The game is left wide open for a sequel which I sure hope they make!
For hardcore Resident Evil fans, the fact that there are NO zombies in this game might bum them out. I was one of those people too who wasn't thrilled with that idea at first, but there are enough crazy monsters and deranged villagers in this game to make up for them and still make it a RESIDENT EVIL game! Play thru this game and I guarantee by the end you WON'T be missing those zombies!
The game can be VERY intense and sometimes overwhelming! The villagers feature great AI which makes them duck, bob and weave if you have them in your gun sights. There are a few good scares thrown in too but the focus here is on ACTION!
The game took me over 20 hours to play thru the first time and has TONS of bonus games, costumes and weapons to unlock adding to it's replay value. I was so addicted to this fun game that I played it for 2 months straight, EVERY SINGLE DAY! I've NEVER done that with a game before and I sure got my moneys worth!
There is a TREASURE HUNTING aspect to the game which allows you to sell found items for money which you can than use to purchase new equipment and upgrade to bigger and stronger weapons, making each new play thru that less difficult. Buy this game, play it with the lights off and the sound up and get ready for one wild, fun and scary ride!
awsome game

i am a great big fan of resident evil games. i remeber when i was about 5 when i first played resident evil the original.it was great full of zombies, mutants and etc. then came resident evil 2 agian full of zombies and etc. which was better than the first one then resident evil nemesis which ended the story line. i loved it.all the resident evils have the same thing : zombies, which becomes boring after a while.then i heard about resident evil 4 and heard that it doesn't have zombies anymore. well after reading the reviews i finally bought it. i was afraid that i might have wasted my money and after playing it for 10 min i realized i was wrong. this is the best resident evil game i have ever played in my life. man its awsome especially the chainsaw dude and the regeneraters. if you have seen resident evil apocalypse you will notice that this game's storyline is like that movie. leon kennedy from resident evil 2 is back and has to rescue the president daughter and during the beggining of the game he is enfected with the las plagas (kind of like the t virus but a parasite) so he is becoming a killing machine. the part of the game i love is where leon has to fight with krauser which is another killing machine. this is a great game. buy it wether you are a resident evil fan or not. thanks to capcom. looking forward to resident evil 5 which will be coming soon

We all know things change and nobody likes it. Sometimes things change for the better or worse. Lucky for Capcom they have given the RE Series a much needed make over.
Bye bye prerendered backgrounds, sloppy controls and inane camera angles.
I know, I know there are many die hard RE fanboys out there right now who have guns pointed at their heads but please put the guns down and listen.
Resident Evil from 1998ish to code Veronica X has been the same damn game over and over. This includes the remakes. In how many REs did you have to find a battery or fuse to power something? In how many did you have to locate a crank?
how many had cheap scares like having zombies jump in through windows?
We have all been driving the same car for over 5 years and while it was bright and shiny in the beginning it has grown dull and rusted, the airconditioning doesn't work and it burns oil like a pig.
Capcom has done the smart thing to keep their dying series alive and not only will it remain so but it will flourish.
RE 4 features a camera that follows you around in an over-the-shoulder fashion. This brings you closer to the character and draws you into the game instead of the distant 3rd person perspective seen in every other RE. You will never find your character shooting around a corner at an enemy you can't see. You will never have to wait for a boss to jump right infront of you to shoot him once and then have him scurry into the ceiling.
Some enemies in RE4 actually do go on ceilings and into rafters. With the help of the over-shoulder view you can actually shot after them creating a much more enriching experience. To be honest none of the other REs even gave you 360 degrees of aiming. There was only straight forward or staight up or straight down.
This does show a limitation in that you can't shoot and move at the same time...which just plain sucks. I think there would be more franticness if your character was running from hordes of zombies while turning his/her head to shoot behind. This game also lacks the complex puzzles of previous REs but considering most of the "complexity" was backtracking to find an item or set of items that may not have been such a bad thing. Maybe I should say lacks the complexity of Silent Hill puzzles. It also lacks atmosphere, those little cryptic diaries and journals of the now deceased or mutated. The RE1 remake was the king in that respect. But I digress.
RE4 no longer has zombies which has been a staple of the series since the beginning and this one is also NOT about the Umbrella Corporation, though in the end it looks as though the next one will be. Whether zombies will show their decaying faces, only time will tell.
Breaking it down:
Graphics: Great and awe enspiring, who knew the little Gamecube could look this good! A lot of the backgrounds are breakable, including doors, boxes, windows and other environmental goodies that you can actually use against enemies.
Sound: The sound is oh-so satisfying the music atmospheric and were it belongs...in the background.
Gameplay: Great! Simply a joy...aim at specific parts of the enemy to set him up for a combo move. Kick, suplex.
Overall: This game is simply wonderful in every way! While it isn't perfect (what game is) it rightfully deserves to be in anyones video game library. This is no rental this is a buy!
It's great!

This game is amazing! Definitely the most fun you can get out of a Resident Evil game or your Gamecube. Graphics, sound, story, they are incredible, but the gameplay and replayability are just perfect! I HAD to rate it 4 stars because it is just too easy for me (at my 22 years of age), the previous games were much more challenging and scary, this game is too straight forward. It's defenitely worth it though!

How can you make a review of the best game ever on the gamecube system? Simply saying that Capcom made a magnificient job here developing this game. I am not a hardcore gamer and I always have a hard time to finish games. This was the exception. I finished the game with a little sweat and time but I finished it, you got it? Is very important to have this kind of games which give the non hardcore gamers a chance to beat them. I was stuck for example in the R.E. Nemesis game and I couldn't finish it no matter how hard I tried. I sold that junk because of the frustration it gave me. But not this beauty. The graphics, the sound, the gameplay is almost perfect. I really love this game and I am now to beat the game for the six time. Buy this title now!!!!!!!!!!
THIS GAME IS BY FAR THE BEST GAME FOR THE CUBE

I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW AFRAID I WAS AT TIMES DURING THIS GAME. I NEVER THOUGHT MY IMAGINATION COULD BE SO IMPRESSED. AFTER PLAYING THIS GAME, ALL OF MY OTHER GAMES BECAME SHELVED. SO THIS GAME IS PERFECT TO ME. IT HAS A COUPLE STRESSFUL PARTS (ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE LOW ON GUNS AND AMMO) AND ONE OF THEM IS TRYING TO AVOID BEING RUN OVER BY A BOULDER ROCK WHICH THERE ARE TWO OF IN THE GAME. I WAS MADLY IN LOVE WITH THIS GAME FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS AND I STILL AM OBSESSED WITH IT EVEN THOUGH I HAVE PASSED THE GAME 5 TIMES. YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED WITH THIS GAME! EVER! EVERY TIME YOU FIRE A WEAPON, YOUR CONTROLLER WITH VIBRATE AND IT FEELS SO REAL! I LOVE THE CRUNCH SOUND IT MAKES WHEN YOU SHOOT THE ENEMIES' HEADS. THIS GAME IS WORTH BUYING A CUBE FOR IF YOU ASK ME. YOU SHOULD SEE THE KNIVES IN THIS GAME TOO! THIS GAME IS SO FREAKY THE FIRST TIME AROUND. PLAY IT WITH YOUR LIGHTS OFF WHEN YOU ARE HOME ALONE.
(BY THE WAY, I AM A 24 YR OLD FEMALE)
A First Class Shooter, but is it Worth the Hype?

Before this game, the Resident Evil series never appealed to me. Static camera angles and clunky controls dominated the early games, and those horrible movies sure didn't endear me to this brand. So Capcom decided to do something about it. They did the only thing that could bring Resident Evil back to the forefront of video games, they created a darn good game.
Now the hype makes it seems like the game that can save the Gamecube and redefine gaming forever. Uhh, I don't think so. Not to say that this isn't a great game, but if you're looking for one of those game changing experiences that rarely occurs, like a Grand Theft Auto 3, ICO, or GoldenEye on the N64, it's not going to happen. While this is not a revolutionary game, it's the height of evolutionary gaming. It's probably one of the finest games of the current generation of consoles. The possible game of the year hype is definitely warranted.
So, this game is a third person over the shoulder survivor horror action game. This pretty much means that the camera angle is set over the shoulder of the main character, and you fight diseased villagers or monsters in a terrifying environment.
In terms of the looks, it's one of the finest games out there. I highly advice an S-video output on your gamecube. However, the screen shots that I often see make this game look a little too good, so if you base your expectations on those screen shots like I did, be prepared to be initially disappointed. The outdoor missions in the beginning will look pixelated and unrefined. Once you hit the castle though, the background graphics are amazing. The atmosphere is dark, and haunting, but the graphics are amazingly smooth. The background is not it though. The main character, the enemies, and the girl you escort around are extremely detailed and the finest I have ever seen. In addition, there are a few cinematics, but they don't overwhelm you or ruin the flow of the game. They integrate well and don't detract from the game.
This also brings up sound. This is some of the best use of sound ever. The music builds up tension and at certain points makes you very anxious. The sound is crucial to gameplay, as you need to listen for villagers yelling at each other and listen to the girl you're escorting when she screams for help. The music is ambient, and the sound effects add to the tension and are also useful to the gameplay.
Speaking of gameplay; it's excellent. This is more of an action game than a survival horror game, which is good. Unlike the Silent Hill games, this will not bore you to death. You face a lot of enemies and with limited ammo - that is ninety percent of this game - killing enemies. This is not like a first person shooter where one shot kills a whole bunch of people though. You'll have to be creative and think when killing the enemies. If an enemy is carrying dynamite, you can shoot him down after he lights the fuse in order for the dynamite to explode and kill anyone around him. You'll shoot people in the legs in order to slow them down so you don't get overwhelmed. You'll shoot weapons out of enemies hands or in mid air. You'll learn to use the certain weapons when absolutely necessary, and you can upgrade or buy new weapons when needed.
Another aspect of the gameplay is the fact that for about one third of the game, you'll escort a girl. I know what you're thinking - an escort mission - no! Well, this is by far the best non playable character AI's ever. She does not jump in front of you when shooting, she doesn't needlessly run into enemies and die, you can heal her, and she tell you when she needs help. This is the finest escort mission around.
Finally, this game is really balanced and fair. By exploring every nook and cranny and saving ammo, the latter missions are not annoying like many other games out there. It's pretty well balanced, fun to play, and you were never lost and rarely stuck.
Of course, this game is not all rosy. First off, the most apparent thing is that you cannot move your legs and shoot at the same time. You are stationary when shooting. It's very similar to Metroid Prime, which I couldn't get into. I realize that it's sort of a way to maximize graphics by limiting movement, but it's very weird for someone who plays first person shooters on consoles. Fortunately, by the second chapter, I was used to, but it still never felt right.
Secondly, this game is more about ammo saving than fighting. While good in some aspects, I was often left wondering if I was wasting of saving ammo, which made me the first half of the game less fun than it should have been.
Thirdly, this game is long and tough. Many times you'll enter a room just to see twenty people running at you. You will say "You've got to be kidding me" to yourself a lot. It's about six chapters, but it took me over 30 hours to complete.
Fourthly, the stationary shooting, the pixelated outdoor missions, limited ammo, and weak weapons in the beginning made it pretty difficult, boring and frustrating in the beginning. I almost gave up on it. Fortunately I continued to see how good the game was.
Finally, there were some minor irritations. Some bosses were hard and I had to look at guides to figure out how to beat them. Also, you cannot save any time you want. While there are many checkpoints, I often killed all the enemies in a room and walked a long way back to a savepoint because there was a significant chance I would die from the next group of enemies. It greatly ruined the flow in the beginning of the game. Also, close action fighting which involved knives, kicks and supplexes were implemented in a weird way that was vastly unintuitive and caused me to lose a lot of health. It's also worth noting that many cutscenes require you to press buttons rapidly or quickly, which is just lame. Lastly, while the game was intense, it wasn't that scary.
The one major thing this game was missing was some type of Cooperative mission. This is a game that would be flat out amazing in co-op.
So the question is, is it worth buying. Yes? Is it worth buying a gamecube for? Maybe. The gamecube version will most likely look better than the PS2 version, but probably not that much. The main problem is that you'll have to wait a long time for the PS2 version to come out. So, if you've got the money and want to play it right now, then buy Gamecube with Resident Evil.
Pros:
Great atmosphere
Smart AI
Detailed Enemies
Best use of sound
Addictive
Balanced
Integrated cinematics.
Lot of tension.
Cons:
Limited Ammo
No movement while shooting
You will die a lot
Can't save any time you want
Knifing, kicking and supplexing is not intuitive
Bosses are a bit tough
A little too long
Not really scary
Need to tap buttons during cutscenes
No co-op, multiplayer.
Length: 30 hours
Difficulty Level: Medium
Frustration Level: Medium
