Practically Perfect in Every Way

Some RE fans have complained about changes to the series that this game had made. Personally, I think they're nuts. The good elements in this game FAR outweigh any little things you might miss. This game has gotten rid of every single thing that people used to complain about: Bad Camera Angles, Annoying Controls, Terrible Voice Acting, and the "magical" item boxes which, though helpful, didn't make sense in a series that for the most part goes for reality.
One minor issue I have with the game is that we didn't really learn anything new as far as what's going on with the main story. We learned what Leon's been doing, and that there's a new parasite going around. I would have liked at least a mention of another RE character, like Chris or Claire (who we know he's been in contact with) but oh well. Also, what is with the additional costumes for women in RE games nearly always being a skimpy outfit? Its one thing when its Jill or Rebecca, who are at least of legal age, but seeing 16 year old Ashley in some small cowboy outfit borders on the pedophilic. I wish the game makers would try something different, like Jill's Sarah Connor outfit in RE1, but it's unlikely.

Awesome graphics, yet EXTREMELY pathetic gameplay.

Yes, another overrated game has recieved great reviews and making tons of money. But is it good? In a word: no. In more than one word: HELL NO.

Graphics: 10/10 Awesome. Great atmosphere, excellent texture, and the people look like actual people. Probably the best looking game I've ever seen

Sound: 9/10 Voice overs are kinda bland for the most part, but some of the villians sound great, and the guns sound very realistic.

Gameplay: 2/10 This is were the game bombs, BIG TIME. No strafe button, crappy camera, and EXTREMELY frustrating. The enemies are vastly overpowered, and your allies are extremely weak. The GC has yet to have a good shooter (yes, the Metroid Prime games suck too), and it is seriously getting me pissed. Why is it that Nintendo just can't make a good shooting game, first or third person. The last truly great one was GoldenEye for the N64. The camera has been changed from the other RE games, but it still sucks. Leon takes up the whole damn screen when he shoots, and he can't even move whilst shooting!!! If any trained government agent could not run and shoot, he'd be dead, but not Leon!!! Why? Because Capcom continues to milk a fatass cash cow.

Ok, I got a little off track, so let me continue about the gameplay. If yuo make a game where you need to take out 20 undead people at a time, you better be able to move, and quickly. Here is also where RE4 fails. Leon moves really slow, especially while wielding a weapon, and he will constantly run out of ammo, see you better be ready to pick some up. Another thing, if you make a game where ammo is scarce, you should make it so you can hold your own hand to hand, right? WRONG!!!! Leon can only kick a guy. That's it. He can't punch or throw somebody, and he is a government agent. Wow. Yet you will see rabid old men choke the life out of you constantly, and you wonder why you can't do the same to them. So, after enduring this for 17 plus hours all I can say is, "Hey, I can never get those 17 hours back! This sucks!!"

Overall: 2/10 I'm in a good mood, and the game's graphics are incredible, so I'm giving it a 2, which equals one star. I want to play a game I can enjoy, and I could not enjoy this. Hell, if a game gets you so mad that you want to snap the disk in two, it isn't very good is it?

Resident Evil breaks out of its mold

Resident evil once again redefines "survival horror" on the Gamecube as the first one did for the Playstation. This game is awesome. If you don't mind the gore, (which quite honestly, is kind of silly sometimes, I mean, come on, when you kick somebody, their heads don't explode!!), then get this game. If you don't have a Gamecube, then get one; they're only 99 bucks : ) Cheaper if you buy one used.

I'm about six hours into this game and I am loving every minute of it! This game is just so much fun!! Some people have been complaining about the camera and how you can't tell what's behind you. It's really not much of a problem, especially if you know some Spanish. I mean, the enemies literally say, "Atraz de ti idiota!" which means, "Behind you idiot," in Spanish, and then there is about a 2 or 3 second delay before they actually attack, plenty of time to run.

The controls are very intuitive and easy to use. The only thing I found a little awkward at first was using the knife, which I eventually go used too. There is also use of the "A" button in a lot of context sensitive situations which I found very cool. The graphics in this game are awesome. I was not blown away as much as I expected to be but they are still extremely well done. The environments are also very different, ranging from mountain trails, to lakes, villages, caves, and so on. I'm not going to comment to much on the sound and music other than to say it is excellent and fits the game perfectly.

I thought I was going to miss the puzzles since I am not really one who is into mindless action over and over but I didn't. There are some puzzles but definitely not as many as the prior ones. The reason I don't miss the puzzles is because shooting is not just mindless. There is some strategy involved. For example, if a horde of enemies are coming at me, I usually shoot some in the legs to disable them temporarily while I take care of the others. Is there one who is trying to throw dynamite at you? Aim at the dynamite to set it off and blow him and those near him to smithereens. It's all very exciting and engaging.

My complaints are very minor and do not detract from the rest of the game, however, I think they can be fixed for RE5. One thing is, although the voice acting is generally good, the dialogue is kind of cheesy. For example, ***warning! minor spoiler ahead***, there is one scene during the beginning of the game where Leon has just battled countless villagers and was taken prisoner and escapes, he is then contacted by some CIA girl and asks how things are going and he says something to the effect of "They could be better," in a kind of smug tone. Come on! After going through all that, he should be going through some extreme anxiety! Anyway, like I said it's pretty minor but I think rewriting some of the dialogue could have enhanced the "horror" aspect of the game. All in all, I highly recommend it.

on third thought, this game is too good
Pros:
-Crazy graphics
-Addictive like cockane(Seriously Horror games aren't THIS addictive)
-No more camera issues(Behind the back is freakin' awsome)
-Upgrading weapons is nice, if u got mad cash
-Pretty funny dialouge
-Good Story
-Challenging boss fights(Some of them are nothin fo $#%% with
-Guiding and gaurding Ashley around reminded me of Ico(Ah.... memories)
-Solving puzzles weren't very hard which was good
-convincing music(Even when I'm walking around with my 45 with 7 bullets, I still felt like something was gonna get me)
-With a 45 magnum, AWWWWW IT'S OVER FOR MY ENEMIES!
-combining herbs can increase your regular health, fully restore health, or both(Nice)
-Siniping is fun(It does modo damage, and it's pretty addictive)
-19 hours is a bit long for a horor game(But with an addicive game like this I wish it went on longer
-After beating the fun journey you get to unlock some nice goodies:
--Assignment Ada(Which has some of her story told as to why she's on the island)
--Mercinaries:An awsome level where you get to shoot up zombie mo-fo's and unlock characters if you get a high rank
--And you get to buy a infinite Rocket Launcher from the merchent(OH YEA!! No more rockets with one shot, which makes you feel like you wasted $30,000)
---After asignment Ada is completed you get to buy an awsome weapon called the chicago typrewriter(A gubn thats strong and never runs out of ammo)
---If you get a S rank with everyone in mercinaries you get and awsom .50 caliber handcanon(Free of charge)
--Did I mention this shoots the replay value up?
-All weapons got nice lazer beams for percision
-Nice voice acting
-A couple of rememinices of Capcom's Devil May Cry
-A lot of memories can be found in this game, ex. the main character
-For those who thought this series would never get better 3 letters RE4, ok 2 letters and a number
-This is by far the best game I have played on gamecube
Cons:
-Booby traps(AHH!! a snake in a crate!! Ow a motherfudgin' beartrap Ow-how-ow!!)
-Protecting the girl can be bothersome(especially if you're fighting a hard enemy of some sort)
-If I get too trigger happy, I'll be fighting off zombies with a knife
-Wolf type zombies SUCK!! The charge you and even if you rotate fast, they geta good chunk outta ya.
-Why spend $30,000 on something you're gonna use once(The Rocket launcher. Why can't you just pick up rockets, I mean even Zombies use rockets and guns sometimes)
-When I beat it the game felt kinda short, cuz I just woke up and thought of 5-7 more hours of meyham, and iteas over in 1 hour, and it leaves you on somewhat of cliffhanger(Hopefully the next Resident evil might clear it up)
-Some bosses leave you with hardly any ammo, or health(They leave a bit of cash tho, but I gotta wonder how long I'll last before I meet the merchant)
-Weapon upgrades and stuff are expensive(the 2 bonus weapons cost 1,000,000 each, and it takes forever to get that cash)

When Resident Evil was remade for gamecube, that felt like a big juicy steak going down my throat, it blew the PSX versoin away like an atomic bomb, Resident evil 0 was a nice addition that showed that the RE series was right at home on the cube, but then when Capcom the didn't even try on the remakes of resident evil 2, 3 and code veronica X, the meat was getting rotten, but Capcom got off their @$$es and wanted to make this game the best horror game avalible. I don't know about y'all but htis game was like a steak with perfect seasoning. It just landed everything right. But watch out, if you're in the dark playing this game, it might be a little hazardous to your heart. Not as scary as Fatal Frame 2, but pretty dang scary, and better. Anyone with a gamecube without plans to pick this up, you shound be slapped, cuz this is the best horror game I've ever played, and one of the greatest games of all time.

Peace

For those of you without a gamecube

This review is for people who do not have a gamecube and are thinking of purchasing one just for this game. For a more in depth review look any where on the internet or in any mainstream magazine for the details of this insanely good game.

Okay so you've got a PS2 and you really want this game butttt... you don't have a gamecube. Should you buy one? Price to put it all together(with game and a memory card) could cost you $180 to $120 if you buy used and bargin shop. A lot to spend on one videogame if you're not a Mario fan.

So should you buy it?
It depends on your personality and what you can afford. I will list the pros and cons of making the purchase and let you make the call.
PROS
- The best game of the year
- Gamegube is light years faster on loading times than PS2 and the graphics are noticably better
- Cube is so cheap and with its arsenal of Cube only titles it is a great purchase
- Sniping a "zombie" from a tower
CONS
- RE4 will appear on PS2 in 7 months or so
- Price of game will be discounted and probably feature some bonus material ( Don't quote me on that but it is a common occurence when they re-realese a title for another system
- With the next gens on the horizon it might be wise to save your money

Take it or leave it, the choice is yours. But its worth the money if you can afford it

All the hype....

I liked this game but felt that the camera at times was a problem. The controls could have used an actual "dodge" feature along with being able to step back out of harm etc.. or roll out of harm.....I also feel that by not being able to sneak it changed the pace and feel of the game. The graphics here are so magnificent however along with the music and such that most will be willing to forgive these quirks. I can definitely see why people are blown away by this game! I just however think its a game to play maybe once then sell or sit on the shelf....so for me it gets some lower ratings for replay value...I mean finding new weapons is cool but not enough for me to go back through the game again.

Best game of the current generation

In their final Resident Evil for the Gamecube, Capcom decided to go out with a bang, releasing one of the best games in the series, if not in this entire generation.

Leaving the Racoon City setting of prior entries, Resident Evil 4 takes place in a European village where protagonist Leon seeks to rescue the President's daughter. The story is developed through outstanding cutscenes and the occasional note found lying about. While the graphics never cease to amaze, the dialog in the cutscenes is corny and is one area where the game could use some improvement.

One of the most immediate changes the player will find is that the enemies are no longer zombies but living breathing humans. Leon's first encounter is with a man who seems to have a strong desire to fix Leon to his pitchfork. This change will leave players guessing as they try and unveil what has caused a seemingly innocent village to move into a murderous rage.

The most important feature in a game of this style is how well the action holds out and Resident Evil 4 excels in that category. Weaponry ranges from pistols to machine guns to shot guns with a healthy offering of upgrades available in each category. As the player progresses, he will be given the option to buy bigger and better guns or to improve his current options for a hardy price tag.

Using each of these weapons gives a believable effect and is body specific. If an enemy is charging at you, you can shoot him in the leg to cause him to fall or go straight for his head to silence him permanently. Shooting monsters in the arms can cause them to drop their weapons or, when wielding a torch, to set themselves aflame. The variety of options here is astounding and allows the player to test out different strategies.

Different situations will require the user to require different tactics as some opponents where armor or have weaknesses in various parts of their bodies. Other moments require quick combinations of buttons as the user must rapidly tap A or press R and L together to evade an attack. These situations can even occur during cut scenes which proves a double edged sword. On the one hand, this choice allows the player to play an active part and stay focused during cut scenes. On the other hand, it forces you to focus on where the button combination appears rather than enjoying the presentation and dialogue. It is especially annoying in one late game scene where six or seven button combinations are required. It grows tiring as you are forced to watch the same cut scene over and over until you can master the timing for action.

One aspect of the game that, while trivial, can become annoying, is the lack of a quick way to change between weapons. When you want to use a sniper rifle for a quick shot and then change back to your shotgun, you have to pause the action several times to access the inventory screen and swap the weapons. It wouldn't have taken a lot of work to make a button to quickly revert back to your last weapon or have a trigger that allows you to choose from your selection of weapons in-game.

However, the inventory is well made in that it leaves you constantly evaluating the value of everything you are carrying. Your backpack is limited in space so it's a constant choice between an extra weapon, more ammunition and health packs. Ammo appears plentiful though it is easy to use it wastefully and finding yourself entering a large battle with limited supplies. As a result, the player must be careful to ration his firing and make every shot count.

Upon completing the game, there's plenty to do and trust me, you'll want to keep playing. A few extra weapons are added to the main game allowing you to go back and explore anything you might have missed in style and a few new play modes are added that will add more hours to the game.

Overall, Resident Evil 4 is an outstanding game that represents the best in graphics and gameplay in the last generation of consoles. Do yourself the favor and pick it up.

Resident Evil 4 - Circa 2005

GOOD:
- Fast and furious game play
- Original Resident Evil story with little to do with pervious Resident Evil games

BAD:
- When compared to other Resident Evil games this one is a little light on story
- You have to buy almost all new guns and upgrades (which for some people is a pain)

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- This game is almost nothing like pervious Resident Evil games form the game play being very fast moving, to the story having no zombies or umbrella company
- This game while harder combat wise when compared to other Resident Evil game is much easier in terms of puzzles

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Resident Evil: Zero
- Resident Evil (Remake on Game Cube)
- Splinter Cell (not for story or stealth, but for shooting aspect that is similar in both games)

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Beating the game once will unlock Leon's Resident Evil 2 costume (police uniform), A arcade style battle mini-game, and a bouns Ada mini-game
- The Playstation 2 version has bonus that the Game Cube doesn't (as well as all of the Game Cube bonus) have like a an expanded Ada mini-game and a 1920's Gangster costume for Leon (but you have to beat the game once to unlock theses options)

BEST GAME EVER (not counting "Super Mario Brothers 3" for NES)

January 11, 2005. Ah, I remember it like yesterday. I went to the local game store and bought this title. I fell into a world of horror, mystery, creepy imagery, and freakin' chainsaw grannies. I haven't bought a single game since. What's the point? No game will ever live up to this magnum-opus, and purchasing any other games (especially on the Nintendo Gamecube) would simply be a huge waste of money.

Let's breakdown how the game works: You are Leon S. Kennedy, and your mission is simple. You are to save the President's daughter in some Spanish town in Europe, and you discover some disturbing cult that plagues residents and turns them into things like zombies. One exception, however: they're as intelligent as any other video-game A.I. ever. They form together, rush you, dodge your attacks, hide from you, throw sticks of dynamite, and decapitate your head with a crusty, blood-stained chainsaw if you let them get too close. Besides the intelligent AI, the level designs are open-ended and beautiful. I don't mean Care-Bare beautiful, either. I'm talking grim, gorgeous, autumn atmospheres, and that's just the forest areas. The castle has 18th century gothic, horror-flick-setting written all over it.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering, exactly how horrifying is it? Well, coming from someone who laughed at the Sylvester Stalone film COBRA when the occultists clanged their axes together menacingly, I may not be the best judge at what's scary to a normal person, but I'd give this game a 4/ 5 on the scary meter, and it's not for any normal person under the age of 12.

January 16, 2005. The day I beat RE4 for the first time. If my memory serves me right, I cried because of how beautiful it was. Hell, I'm not ashamed of the truth: I balled. It was so emotional for me. I had just beaten the most magical title on the planet, and it was over. Yeah, sure, some of those tears were tears of joy, but most of them were tears of sadness. However, after depleting two or three boxes of tissues, I found out the game had excellent replay value, something most games lack (I cried some more after that revelation, but that's besides the point).

I would give this game 6 out of 5 if it was possible, but it's not, so I'll give it a 5. Perfection is something no game except "Super Mario Brothers 3" (1980's version only) for the original Nintendo Entertainment System has achieved, but Resident Evil 4 is as close as any game can come. All well; I'll just have to wait 15 more years for another video-game masterpiece

Quite simply, my favorite game...

I beat RE4 last night ... wow, it is spectacular! I cannot recommend it highly enough.

First, the gameplay and story are perfect. Also, it is a long (but not tedious or boring) ride -- it took me almost 43 hours to beat it.

Second, they tweeked the complexity just right (not too hard, not too easy). You don't ever have a situation where you will be stuck, nothing like some of GTA:SA's missions that take a lifetime to beat.

Third, even after the long adventure (that just seems to fly by because you are sooooo engrossed in the story) there are several new mini games that open up after you beat the main story -- and they are very cool/fun.

Fourth, the audio/video production levels are top notch. The best graphics available on the Gamecube complimented by great surround sound ... you will be completely immersed in it.

Lastly, this is the FIRST action/adventure game that I will play through again. Normally, once beaten I trade them in for something new ... not this one. And a very cool feature is that you retain all of your weapons & cash you acquire from the previous playthrough. So, I will be able to start a new game
with rocket launchers, machine guns, heavy duty magnums, etc. --- those freak'n zombie dudes better watch out, I will be starting this adventure again with MAJOR FIREPOWER :)

GO OUT AND GET IT, PLAY IT, LIVE IT ... you will be hooked!

P.S. Like others on this site, I am not a "kid reviewer" but an adult. I just was not willing to enter my CC information to submit a review.
