I know it's too early to be praising, but this game deserves it. Only one game can knock it off this year and that is Legend of Zelda. If this game came out last year, it would've been GOTY. Forget Half-Life 2, forget Halo, forget Mercenaries this is the best hands-down. You'll be doing yourself a crime if you don't play this.

Resident Evil 4 is definitely a fresh and fun new experience, but...Is this Resident Evil? Yeah, Leon's here but where are the zombies? I'm sorry, but that's what Resident Evil is about. I realize that you couldn't really have this intense new gameplay with slow moving, decaying corpses lumbering at you, but c'mon now. At least throw in a COUPLE of zombies... or some Lickers, or Hunters, or Tyrants; an underground Umbrella lab, I don't care.
My main gripe with RE4 is the story. In RE2 Leon is a rookie cop who comes to Raccoon City to start his *1st* day on the job, but ends up fighting for his life against zombies and other Umbrella experiments. 6 years later while on his *1st* government assignment searching for the President's daughter, he comes across a these parasite monsters and their cult. Oh, and what do ya know? Umbrella is after a sample. Amazing how this guy just stumbles across some kind of freaky new monster every time he starts a new job. It wouldn't have bothered me if he went to Europe looking for these things, knowing that Umbrella was trying to get a sample or something, but no; it was all complete coincidence.
What ever happened to the original RE4 storyline of Chris, Jill, Barry, and the S.T.A.R.S. members all going to Europe to investigate Umbrella headquarters that was foreshadowed in Chris' Diary in RE2 and that Capcom had always talked about? I guess that story is scrapped now...bummer.
And when I see these new monsters I think of 2 different Dreamcast games that came before it. The 1st is "House of the Dead". That game had zombies that ran up on you hacking and slashing at you with knives, sickles, claws, etc. The 2nd is "Carrier", which was a shameless Resident Evil rip off. In this game people were getting infected by this mutant plant virus and then vines would sprout from their neck ripping their heads off. These "Las Plagas" are like a cross between the two.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great game. But for the hardcore zombie-loving RE fan, it leaves something to be desired. I didn't like the whole setting with the cult, and that stupid little Salazar guy talking to you on the codec all Metal Gear wannabe style. Complaints aside, the gameplay is action packed and intense. I just hope Umbrella and the zombies are back for RE5. They can throw these parasite monsters in too, but Resident Evil just isn't Resident Evil without zombies.

Like that matters. I think anyone who has played this game could tell you that no spoiler will prepare you or ruin it. Well, my main complaint with this game is of course, the changes. Not zombies, damned straight. The first time the chainsaw maniac kills you, you'll be thinking Texas Chainsaw Massacre, not George Romero. It isn't much of a change, so that's a minor complaint. Because they may as well be zombies, just zombies that speak Spanish and choke you instead of biting you, you still have to shake, shake, shake to get free of their grasp. Insert "parasite" for "zombie" and you're good to go. There are still monsters, some incredibly huge and detailed monsters that look right at home with any other RE you've played. The only thing that I can say I truly hate about this entry is the dodge scheme. At certain points in the game you have to press a button combo, sometimes even in the middle of a cutscene, but if you hit the wrong buttons, it's automatic death and back to your last continue point. It may serve to keep you on your toes, but it makes you realise you're playing a game, takes you out of the story and so it's not a very immersive feature. Sometimes it's a quick AB or LR, and sometimes it's hammering on the A or B button, at times both. Quite a bit like the "interrogation" scene in Metal Gear Solid. That said, I have very much enjoyed the game. The graphics will take your breath away. It's that beautiful. Yes, even "IT" could be classed as beautiful when we're talking detail such as this. And the sound design is right up there too. The first time I encountered a Regenerator, it sent chills up my spine. Not only does it look terrifying, it sounds scary as well. My hat's off to Capcom, I miss my zombies and I miss the evil Umbrella Corporation, but THIS is truly deserving a game of the year award. If at some point, it doesn't impress you, you are very jaded indeed. At the very least, a rental will make you love it or hate it. I, myself, bought it, just because it's that good.
One good game

I bought this game after never renting it, knowing I wouldn't be wasting my money. I am surprised at how impressive this game really is. I got it from target.com exactly 1 week ago and I don't think the end of the first disk is very close (after playing it a lot). My expectations were satisfied in the first couple of hours and it just gets better. Buy this game!! Buy it now and be ready for the best game in this genre of all time!! Top five list for best game ever!!
Final game as good as demo

I just picked up this game 3 or 4 hours ago and am thourougly impressed already. The graphics are amazing. I'm serious, most of my Xbox games don't even measure up to this game(even Halo). It truly is a creepy game. Things will jump out in front of you and try to dismember you. So far, I haven't met to many different enemies, but the ai is fairly proficent and will take every chance it gets to flay you alive.
Truly excelent game!
OH MY GOD!

After witnessing an atcual video of the game in action, I had only one thing to say: HOLY CRAP! Everything I had heard about the fourth installment of the series was nothing compared to seeing it in action. Graphics, sound, gameplay, everything I could have asked for and more. Even more surprising was the decent voice acting, not to mention the beautifully rendered cinematics. It's truly amazing just how far the development team went when making this game, pushing the Gamecube to its bursting point.I had already anticipated several gamers giving the title a perfect score but found some who gave the game an average score for foolish reasons. Most everyone complained about the camera view concealing enemies approaching from behind. I personally feel that this was intended to increase the scare factor of the game. Most of the time you find yourself too busy focusing on the enemies in view to even realize they may be coming up from behind. Another stab they made at it was that there was a lack of mobility while firing and the inablity to shuffle through weapons without the use of the menu screen. Please keep in mind that this game is NOT a first person shooter, though it at times appears to be. In regards to the menu, I don't understand why gamers wouldn't like to use it. The last thing I want is to be searching through my assortment of weapons while a chainsaw-wielding maniac is bearing down on me. All this aside, there is no reason why anyone of proper age wouldn't call this game nothing short of a masterpiece. Those who are familiar with the series will feel right at home and newcommers will be literally blown away. Resident Evil 4 is easily dubbed game of the year.
Resident Evil 4 is all I hoped for!

This is an actual review here. Not just the demo, but the actual game in full action. I've gotta tell you that I've never been more impressed with an RE game before. Nearly everything about RE4 shines. From its gripping story to shattering climax, there's no other RE game that could topple this one in the long run.
Leon S. Kennedy (last we saw him was Resident Evil 2) now works for the CIA and has been sent to a village in Europe to rescue the Presidents daughter. But when he gets there he's not being attacked by Zombies, but the villagers. Immediately Leon senses something wrong and that's there's more evil afoot than this. Resident Evil 4 is full of surprises and the way it's presented only heightens the experience.
Gameplay wise, this game stands up to everything you'd expect from an RE game, but there's more! A lot of the elements of the RE series have been worked over to give you a more pleasurable experience. You can now aim your weapon at enemies. At first it seems frustrating but a lot of enemy encounters are up close. Not only that but enemies are also sensitive to areas that you shoot them in. Should an enemy be rushing at you with a pitchfork, you can slow him down by shooting him in the leg.
There are other new elements of the gameplay presented in RE4 that stand out. When approaching a door you can either choose to open it slowly, or have Leon ruthlessly kick it down. Along with being able to kick down doors you can also make Leon jump out windows when in the face of danger.
The game does present one heck of a challenge though. While the game takes very many shooter style elements, it leaves out a few. You can't side step or strife which in turn makes some encounters a bit harder, and while aiming is great, you have to be precise. A head shot may not kill an enemy but make them whimper in pain. So a head shot may not always be the best shot.
It would also be impossible to say that RE4 doesn't have stunning boss fights. Most bosses present a challenge and taking them down isn't always easy. It provides more of a challenge than previous games.
RE4 also has incredible visuals. This is quite possibly one of the greatest looking games the Gamecube has ever received. The lighting effects are brilliant and it gives off a horrific atmosphere. The enviroments are very decorative and while you can't exactly interact with it; it's amazing just to admire. Also, since you're mostly spending time outside, you're not constantly waiting for the next screen to load. It keeps the action going.
The game actually has a more cinematic look. You'll feel it once you get into the game. Even in cinematic cutscenes you may need to act. Sometimes you'll have push a certain button to get out of the way of certain objects. In other words, it keeps your eyes on the screen.
The cutscenes also aren't so long, which really helps get the game moving a long. While the voice acting is good, the dialogue is cheesy. Which brings about the audio. Overall, it's hard to decide if the audio out does the graphics. For one thing the audio does a bang up job in uplifting and setting the mood. It's absolutely stunning in everyway.
The difficulty of this game is fairly high. In the beginning most enemies can take you down fairly quickly. You also have to beware traps when running around in the wild areas, and while ammo is plentiful in the beginning, it starts to dwidle down. At some point you'll have to start counting your shots. So as the game goes on, it stays fairly difficult. It isn't one of those games that as the end gets near it gets easier. The game also throws new challenges at you around every corner.
There aren't a whole lot of puzzles in this RE game. Most of the time you'll be trying hard to survive. You'll probably be thankful when a puzzle comes up. It gives you a break and relieves the tension.
You can also buy weapons and supplies from a shopkeeper who pops up from time to time. From this man you can also increase your life gauge based on how much money you've earned through diminishing your foes.
Resident Evil 4 is also a nice long game full of extras! There are new gamemodes to enjoy, bonus weapons and more. The game is also a whopping 25 hours long, making it the longest RE game to date. Not only that, but you no longer have to spare ribbons to save your game. Leon can use a typewriter at any time, at any place.
Resident Evil 4 is not without fault though. For one, the inventory is still limited. It's frustrating when you've got to dump one weapon so you can get another out. And while you can now toggle between Leon's gun and knife, it would've probably been better if you could toggle between two guns instead.
Aside from these small quirks, Resident Evil 4 is a brilliant game. By far one of the best games the Gamecube has.
The Positive Stuff
+Great Graphics and overall presentation--Movie Like
+Incredible soundtrack
+Lots of depth to the game
+25 hours of gameplay!
+Suspenseful and fun
+Awesome boss battles
The Bad
-The Inventory is still limited
-While it's great to toggle between the knife and gun... it probably would've been better if you could toggle between two guns
Best in the series!!!!

A GameCube-exclusive, Resident Evil 4 had been one of those games stuck in development for what seemed like an eternity. Despite the delays and concerns about the games exclusive status on Nintendos platform (don't worry, it will be released on the PlayStation 2 before the end of the year), Resident Evil 4 is a superb game that re-invents the tried-and-true mechanics of the series in important, innovative ways plus, it's creepy as hell. Resident Evil 4 picks up after Code: Veronica, with Leon Kennedy (from RE2) now a government agent sent to rescue the presidents daughter who disappeared in Europe. Of course, her kidnapping is only a small part of the huge overall picture. The much-publicized absence of trademark zombies (and nemesis corporation Umbrella) was replaced by enemies that are far deadlier: crazed villagers and cultists (among others) who actually put up a fight. Enemies use explosives, weapons, and even bob and weave to dodge your attacks. They also set-up a variety of crude but effective booby traps. If the re-make of the first Resident Evil on the GameCube set a new visual standard for the series, then RE4 easily raises the bar. The game is gorgeous in a very effective way, with mist, rain, and other diverse weather effects coupled to immense detail. Static, pre-rendered backgrounds have been a love-hate relationship of the RE series, but number four wisely discards them with a new third-person view so you can see more of your surroundings, including attackers that may be lurking nearby.
RE was frequently frustrating due to the limits on the play system, but not here. Characters can vault over rails, jump through windows, and even engage in hand-to-hand fighting when dry on ammunition. Interwoven into the play mechanics are Action Button sequences twitch-finger situations where you must press the button prompt that appears onscreen (two buttons simultaneously, or one button rapidly). Simple controls keep the diverse functions under simple command, and the various inventories are easy to access and navigate, but the inability to reload weapons in the menu screen or while moving can be a real pain. Speaking of weapons, the game serves up an arsenal Solid Snake would envy: Machine guns, sniper rifles, grenades, magnums, and other weapons can be obtained, and new ones can be purchased and upgraded by one of the many weapon Merchants at random spots throughout the game. If RE4 has any problem, it goes on a little too long (it spans two discs), with one boss battle and plot twist too many. However, there's an extensive reward system, including unlockable content that adds excellent replay value. It took time, but Resident Evil 4 finally arrived in glorious fashion, and fans of the series will be more than pleased. It's easily the best game in the series in recent years.
How Could You be Disappointed with this Game?

I am an avid Resident Evil gamer. I have been a fan of the series since Resident Evil 2 and I liked all the previous games. But since the videos of this game came out, I was excited. A Resident Evil game with ammo, good camera angles, and fun? WOW.
So I definetely went and picked up this game after it came out and was not disappointed at all. In fact, this is the only game in the series to genuinely create a sense of fear. From the moment hordes of the Los Ganados come rushing towards you, you know this game is frightening beyond belief. The enemies rush at you, dodge, and duck to escape your bullets. Gone are the standard zombies that have plagued the: mansion, island, town, training facility, and antarctic. THANK GOD!!
The graphics are superb, with all of the cutscenes using the game's engine. Honestly, I had no idea that I was playing the game when it started. The gameplay is stellar, easily surpassing such games as Metal Gear Solid and other games in those categories. The third person way of aiming is awesome, you can choose where to fire at your enemies, stunning them and making them fall down, or split their heads open.
I don't see how certain people could be disappointed with this game. It is impressive in all aspects. The people who are hardcore fans have complained about all the changes...well they can go and lock themselves away and hope Capcom changes the formula back. Already, this game is a Game of the Year candidate, and if released a month earlier, would have won it last year. No contest, this is one of the best games I have ever played in my 18 years of existence...bar none.
Resident Evil Re-Invented, Improved...Possible GOTY 2005

Prior to this game, if someone said to me "Resident Evil," I'd think "I hate that series." Why? The controls. The story was good, the remakes had excellent graphics...but the controls were, in my opinion, awful. They were in fact so bad that I never finished any of the previous games.
Resident Evil 4 is a new beginning for the series, one of the best games on the GameCube, and possibly the Game of the Year for 2005 (I'm reserving judgement until the new Zelda comes out, but that's beside the point). The biggest change is the controls. Gone is that "you control from the perspective of the character" idea. It has been replaced with a 3rd person over the shoulder persepctive, and this will probably be the new standard in survival horror. Why? The angle still allows things to sneak up on you, but is user friendly enough to bring back a lot of people who put down the first Resident Evils because of their controls. I'm sure you're thinking, "doesn't that make the game way too easy?" No, it doesn't. In order to aim and fire, you have to hold R and use the thumbstick you normally use to move. Hence, though the enemies are slow, your inability to aim and shoot while moving makes the game challenging.
The graphics are hands down the most impressive of anything that have been released on any current console. Yes, better than Halo 2's graphics. The use of lighting and particle effects creates an unparalleled atmosphere. The people, guns, and items have an amazing amount of detail.
The story is pretty good. It's no RPG, but it does hold together and keeps some people guessing till the very end (IMO it became predictable, but it was still good).
Oddly enough, for a game that seems to warrant 1 playthrough, I've wanted to keep playing it well after beating the game once. The extras, Assignment Ada and Mercenaries, are both very entertaining. The unlockables make the main story worth playing through a second, third, fourth, or even fifth time.
All in all, if you own a GameCube, you must own this game. And for those of you waiting for the PS2 version, consider getting a GameCube instead. The graphics required to make this game what it is are not even close to available on the PS2 (specifically particle and lighting effects).
