Resident Evil Remake is one of the best remakes ever..

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4
Date: August 03, 2006
Author: Amazon User

STARS Bravo team has been sent into the Arklay Mountains in Raccoon Forest to investigate strange reports of savage murders. When the Bravo team fails to report in, the Alpha team goes in. Not only do they find the Bravo helicopter on the ground and destroyed with no one around, but shortly after the Alphas are attacked and forced to retreat to a seemingly abandoned Mansion. Your mission is to uncover what - exactly - is killing everyone, why its killing everyone, how it all started, and to find both the missing Bravo & Alphas soldiers.

Resident Evil is a third person survival horror game, and honestly, its a masterpiece. You start off choosing who you want to control - Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine - and pending on who you choose the game plays slightly differently. For instance, when your Jill you meet Barry Burton but when your Chris you find Rebecca Chambers. From there you explore different areas, unlocking doors, solving mind boggling puzzles, gathering keys, and shooting monstrosities such as zombies and frog-looking things with huge claws called Hunters with handguns, shotguns, grenade launchers, and other weapons. You get these things called "Defense Items" such as daggers or tasers so when a monster grabs you, you can stab it so that way you not only get it off of you but gives you a few seconds to figure out a plan of action.

In this remake of the Playstation 1 classic, you have to do something a little differently then in the original. When you slaughter a zombie you must burn the body to actually "kill" it or blow off its head. To do this you have to find a flask and kerosene, and from there light the bugger. If you fail to do so, over time the zombie will become a "Crimson" otherwise known as Super Zombie and come back to attack you with much faster & devastating moves.

Theres a pretty decent replay value for a few reasons. For starters there are many different endings (I believe something like 10) depending on who you rescue, and who you let live or die. From there, if you beat the game in under something like 3 hours you can unlock different costumes, a "hidden zombies" version of the game, a single "ferocious zombie" version of the game, the rocket launcher w/ infinite ammo, and other things. Also, in this remake, they added a lot of extras such as a new place to explore, more enemies, more interesting cut scenes like a clip of Kenneth's death, new scares, etc.

The graphics are not only about 100 steps up from the original game, but truley look AMAZING. I'm forced to admit that this is probably one of the most terrifyingly realistic looking games ever - especially for the Gamecube. The enviroments are dark, spooky, life like and downright scary. When lightning strikes outside, you can see the flash through windows. The characters (including monsters) look amazing and unique. The lighting is superb in this game as well.

The music is just straight up freaky, and really truley help add some darkness to the already scary atmosphere. It helps keep the tension built and helps leave the gamer on the edge of the seat. The voice acting is not "great" per sae, but definitley better than the Playstation version's. The zombies moaning and dogs howling were great, and the sounds of the shotguns blowing them to pieces was even better :).

What sucks about this game is, just like every other Resident Evil, the high amount of back tracking & the inventory management - though the management actually helps add some suspense if done right. Like I said, you'll be backtracking ALOT...and by a lot I mean it will take up a great deal of your game play time. But really, it's worth it. Also, they got rid of the live action people and replaced it with computer animated people.. I guess it fits more with the game but im an Old Schooler and I liked that stuff.

RE isn't too long if you understand the puzzles, begin to learn the level layouts fast, take out enemies efficently & effectivley, or played the original game like I did. I'd say, for newbies, anywhere from 4-8 hours... other people woll have it done in 3 or less.

The controls are a bit clunky, but you get the hang of them really fast - especially the useful 180 degree turn that can get you away from fights fast.

To finish it up, fans of survival horror or Resident Evil will truley love this game, or those waiting for a game that will scare the bejesus out of them on the childish Gamecube. I know I did, and since this game only costs about $5 its a must have. Truley a great hommage and tribute to the original game that came out god knows how long ago.

Quite possibly the most beautiful game I've ever seen

For those of you who have played the original Resident Evil on the PS1 way back in 1995-96, then you may think that the remake is just another typical remake. Prepare for a surprise, the REmake is quite possibly another game in its own.

Let's start with what we know, the REmake does infact follow the original story line and still contains most of the same elements from the original game with a few exceptions. You play as either Chris Redfield (who once belonged to the Air Force) or Jill Valentine (a lady who could probably take down most beer-bottled men in a heartbeat; don't be surprised, she's grown a backbone over the past 10 years). And of course Barry will follow you on your adventure as Jill or Rebecca will help you out as Chris.

One thing Resident Evil veterans will notice right away though, is that this is no ordinary remake. Capcom has thrown in new twists, turns, and even some new places in the game just for kicks. A few new hallways have been placed in the mansion and an eerie cabin awaits you near the guardhouse. A few new enemies await you in this game as well. The inclusion of Crimson Heads (what zombies will become if you don't incinerate them or blow their heads off), and bosses like the super crimson head (who many people believe is actually George Trevor) and a deformed mutation known as Lisa.

Speaking of Trevor, his past is explored more in this game. You find bits and pieces of his journal lying about and it eventually will end in his demise. You also find a letter from his wife (Jessica Trevor) and a journal left behind by his daughter, Lisa Trevor. And yes, Lisa is a boss in this game. If you actually get into her story, it's really quite sad. But enough of that. Let's get into the actual game.

Gameplay is dramatic in the sense that it plays like your actually in the game. I must admit that the graphics are unbelievable, You probably won't find a more beautiful game than this. It may be pre-rendered, but when grass sways, shadows move, the wind blows through the trees, and the water moves so gently, you will believe that the realism is almost to the point of being able to touch it. The story hasn't changed much. Except that Wesker will help you as Chris like Barry did for Jill. Wesker will leave ammo and fix doors for you to help you out and it almost makes you wish he doesn't...well, for those of you who haven't played it, I won't give away the ending.

It's been a long time coming but the game does not dissapoint and it has become a classic once again it gamers will indeed hold this dearly to their hearts. I recommend this for veterans though, those who haven't played the original should before they play this one as the REmake can be quite hard at times.

All in all, a game that Gamecube owners should not pass over. In a sense, it's every bit as good as the original.

This game is awsome. It's by far the scariest game I have ever played. The graphics are some of the best I have seen out of all the 128 bit systems in existence, Dreamcast, Xbox, and the PS2. The control scheme did take a little bit of getting used to, I'd say about a half hour or so, but once you get used to playing it on the GameCube controller the game play is very smooth. If for some reason you REALLY don't like the controller, go out and buy an adapter to hook up your PS2 controllers to the GameCube for like 20 bucks. I'd recommend this game to anybody, you wouldn't even know this is a remake of the original Resident Evil if you hadn't been told. There's new feature like dropping grenades down zombie's throat, sticking a dagger right in their skull, burning them, and frying them with your tazer. There's 12 different endings, good and bad which will keep you replaying the game until Resident Evil 0 comes out. Have fun.

Buying advice for the veteran or the newbie

I noticed most of the reviews posted have been catered towards two different types of players: those that have played the original and those who have never played any RE game. I decided to split my review into two parts to specifically cater to both.

FOR THOSE who have played RE, you will notice one of several things within the first 15 minutes: things haven't changed much. Some of the first areas you wander through will look noticeably different and areas that weren't locked before are locked now which forces you to immediately go key hunting. But what will stick out above all else is how beautifully eerie the mansion looks. Despite the use of pre-rendered backgrounds, the Gamecube's powerful engine and lighting effects have turned every nook and cranny into an all-out gothic art masterpiece. Still, once you get over the awe of how great everything looks (especially how realistic and fluid the character models are), you'll start feeling empty. The essentials of RE gameplay are unchanged. Some files have been added which alter the storyline but still don't completely reinvent the gaming experience.

There are really only two new things about this game in terms of what characters can do. First, there is the defense knife, which allows Chris or Jill to escape the clutches of a hungry zombie. The second is the super-zombie feature. In this version, zombies can only be killed in two ways: blowing off their heads or setting them on fire. If you wait too long they will come back from the "dead" and you can forget about using a pistol on them because they'll be all over you before you can even get two rounds out of the chamber. Needless to say, it does add some challenge to the game, however, the overall number of zombies in the mansion is significantly less. Although it makes things much more realistic than the original (why did Umbrella have so many personnel in the mansion?) it lowers the overall amount of action in the game. Most of the combat occurs in quick, jumpy instances-usually after a zombie bursts open a door from a room that you already thought was empty.

As for the new areas, think of them more as icing on the cake as opposed to a whole new slice of pie. All together, they lengthen the game by possibly 45 min to an hour. There are really no new areas, just minor additions that add up in the end.

The game is also being advertised as spanning two disks; however, don't exactly think that you're getting your money's worth on that one either. You actually don't even need to switch disks until you have to set the Eagle and Wolf medals in place and the final area is exactly the same size. The second disk is entirely a spillover.

BUT, everything is not all bad. Sound quality is fine; nothing to get excited about but the greatest improvement is the music. When it does come in, it definitely gets the adrenaline pumping. Many of the items need to be manipulated more so that it's not just enough to take them to the obvious spot and then use them to do their dirty work. The really simple puzzles in the game have been rehashed and now offer some challenge in order to solve but still nowhere on the level of, say, Myst. There are also more cutscenes and you'll interact with either Barry or Rebecca more frequently. Actually, Jill's storyline is the coolest and I recommend you play hers first because the question of whether or not to trust Barry is much more real an issue than before. All in all I would say rent before you buy.

One final note that I forgot to place in my original review concerns a certain Lisa Trevor. For those of you who are veterans of the PSX version of RE, I would be remiss if I failed to inform you that there is a new mini-boss in the remake. I won't give away too many details to prevent spoiling things for the newbies, but it is definitely one creepy B.O.W. Unfortunately, I wish Capcom spent as much time making her attacks as freightening as her looks. The 3 times you do encounter her in the game are highly forgettable simply because once you understand her movement patterns you can pretty much dodge the thing and never have to worry about her. Anyway, it's in there if you want to take a look.

FOR THOSE who haven't played an RE game, you are in for a treat. BUT, and this is a big BUT, you have to realize that the control scheme--for some people--requires some getting used to. The characters have a very tank-like method of movement and the constant change in camera angles often frustrates players. I would say that the majority of people who hate this game do so because they can't get a grip on how to navigate. I would encourage you to try moving around first and experiment with the other control schemes (there are 3) before you completely write this game off. If you can't get a handle on it, this game is probably not for you. If you can, then enjoy. If you are a fan of classic horror films, all those things that are great about them are here. There's lots of B-rated voice-acting, lots of things jumping out from around corners; the feeling of claustrophobia is entirely real.

The original RE, although a great game, had several problems (many of the puzzles were just too obvious, zombies were liberally placed throughout as cannon fodder, etc.) In this version there are less zombies but what you do with them and where they are becomes a real concern, especially on the harder difficulty settings when there isn't enough ammunition to possibly kill them all. Strategy IS important.

As for the game being scary, it really depends. Many reviewers say this game scared the socks off of them. I've honestly never jumped once when playing this game, but that's not to say that I didn't think it was creepy. The zombies do really look evil now, especially in the face, but even the super-zombie (who blows out a wicked breath of musty air from his mouth and RUNS after you) doesn't exactly make me shiver. It's entirely a concept game and if you didn't dig the concept to begin with, you won't appreciate the art that was put into making this version of the game so much more superior than the Playstation's. Again, rent before you buy, but you will arguably be much more satisfied with this remake.

BOTTOM LINE: it's more fun, more elaborate, more difficult, and more realistic.

Best Game on Gamecube

It's like the consecutive re-releases of the Star Wars trilogy. First they came to video, digitally re-mastered, then they came to theatres as special editions, which is basically what you could call Resident Evil for Gamecube, a special edition on a much grander scale. Here, much more useful than the too soon release of Resident Evil: Directors Cut for the Playstation that fell victim to the all too familiar "too soon-too little" that we've seen with multiple sequels and others alike only offering bland costumes and a few minor dull additions; we have a new game to play with, above the minor additions of Code Veronica X and others.

Now before we begin I still stand by my statement that Resident Evil is now just a marketing franchise that has lost its roots, lost its scares, and nearly lost everything that made it once a brilliant series (As I mentioned in my Silent Hill 2 review). All of the sequels are in many ways very entertaining and definitely worth a look for all gamers (Resident Evil: Nemesis became my surprise game of 1999). But standing alone, none of them matched the original, despite its dated graphics shallow replay, it still is one of the five best Playstation games ever.

And why may you ask? It would be my same comparisons used in Silent Hill 2. It's all about the setting, neither the police station, city streets or island can compare to the eeriness of the infamous mansion, its seclusion in the dark misty woods, its many secrets and hidden rooms where unknown horrors lurk. So yes, in the end it may seem like Resident Evil for Gamecube may seem like nothing more than a quick buck idea cooked up during a board meeting at Capcom. But Resident Evil proves not only the great standing stature of the originals setting and characters but even surpasses the fabled prodigy by adding a few tricks of its own to an already great game.

To start things off, all of the old puzzles have been changed, outraged to some perhaps since it most likely will require some to look up a strategy guide to solve half of the puzzles, some of which are quite the mindbender. An easy moves no doubt, but adds immensely to the new feel of Resident Evil being no puzzle here will be solved easily. Also thrown in for good measures is dozens of side areas previously unseen, most notable is the Guest House that lies on a forest path from the mansion where a new monster lies, I won't give away what it is, but it provides that nervousness that Nemesis created knowing it could pop up any moment. As for the veteran creatures, the usual Resident Evil line-up is here, the zombies return but with a few new additions. Zombies now must be incapacitated by either burning their bodies or blowing their heads off completely. If players fail to dispose of them they eventually will come back to life and move as fast as hunters and also attack relentlessly and require even more bullets to bring down once more. Asides from the zombies, all the old trouble-makers are here dogs, spiders, hunters, Plant 42, and of course the Tyrant.

Defence Items are now available now from daggers to tazer's, if characters are being attacked by zombies they can be thrown off by jamming a knife into their heads or for Chris shoving a flash grenade in their mouths then shooting it completely wiping an enemy out, giving players a moment to regain themselves and get their distance. The differences though subtle to some, are a must for long time fans of Resident Evil. For those looking for a reason to own a Gamecube and those Resident Evil fans who always drool for more, this is your golden ticket.

Absolutely Thrilling

When I popped this in, I was amazed. I cannot stress enough how amazing this title is. It is so well done that it's hard to pin down a certain element that makes it undeniably one of the best games ever.
Perhaps the most obvious trait is the graphical level. These are the best graphics to grace the Cube yet, or any other system for that matter. The realism and dynamic lighting make an enormous contribution to the horror that you experience every second you play this game... And every night afterwards. Let me tell you something that I honestly have never been able to say before: You will have to look very hard to see any polygons on these characters, even on close-ups. The zombies are terribly gruesome, the dogs curl and twitch their lips with ferocity, and Jill looks so cute that you just can't blame those poor undead folks for chasing her around. The graphics definately, definately get a 10 out of 10.
The music is absolutely wonderful. There are so many parts that are scary enough with no BGM, but the when the music goes into an insane crecendo, the scare of whatever comes out behind that corner is delightfully enhanced. There's just enough score to support the game and increase the suspense. Along with that, the sound is superb, too. Your foosteps on creaking boards shatter the dreadful silence. The dogs' breath is so real that you smell it. And if you listen, you can hear the sick, slimy, uneven steps of a zombie stalking you. Yeah. The sound rocks. Music and FX get a 10, too.
The play control is probably the only downside of this game. It is very challenging. But this drawback is a VERY small price to pay for all the other wonderful things about this new RE. After a while, mastery to whatever control scheme you select is easily obtained. It is, however, a pity that Capcom thought it unimportant to improve the character control. Control, I sadly give a 6 out of 10.
A Survival Horror needs scary elements, and RE GCN gives us just that. An old, creepy mansion, with mindless, merciless, mutated horrors stalking you. There is a point in the game where a creature capable of opening doors WILL hunt you throughout the many areas of game, and the terror is extreme. There are surprises everywhere. A few hours playing the game teaches you to NEVER assume that ANYthing is dead for good. Running Zombies, half decayed dogs, and of course the hair-raising, absolutely unspeakably terrifying Lisa Trevor... The fear factor blazes beyond any movie ever made. The story is great, too. Looking for your friends and finding unimaginable creatures instead always makes for a great theme. 10 out of 10 for the story and theme. An enormous 10 for the fright factor!
Which makes this game WAY too scary for people under 17. Yes, there are exceptions. I realize that there are some 14-15 year-olds that have been numbed to the point where they can't be disturbed. But the Mature rating on Resident Evil is very much justified. Even if you are older than 17... If you are the type of person who is easily stirred emotionally, this game probably will really mess you up.
Parents: Do NOT get this for your children. Yes, this is Nintendo. But this is NOT Mario. If you give this game to your child, he/she will not get any sleep for a long time... And neither will you. It is very fun. It's very creative. But it is REALLY scary.
One more piece of advice... Don't get this game if you live by yourself (snicker). I did, and... Heh, heh... I'll admit it. I was scared one night for a little bit. I was! But it was fun. Go it alone, or invite some friends over. Lock the doors. Be sure to turn out the lights. Scare yourself half to death. Have fun!

UNBELIEVABLE!!

This is the most amazing thing I have ever played.
Resident Evil comes off as a perfectly executed movie, from the flawlessly directed cinema scenes to the incredibly atmospheric gameplay, sound and lighting effects, and character animations. I can't sing enough praises of the pure terrifying effectiveness of this game; I spend most of my gameplay time on the edge of my seat, sweating, with adrenaline coursing through every limb and numbing my brain. This game is not just graphically perfect, but its ways of dropping you into a room with the character you're playing really do have a very "Blair Witch" effect of putting you right there in the middle of the horrifying moment. When you're in a dark, confined space with only the creepy sounds of some ungodly creature creeping toward you from a direction you can't be sure of, it really is just like being there and being hunted to the death... it's like an honest-to-god nightmare. I seriously had to just save the game and shut it down tonight, because it was getting a tad too intense and I strongly suspected I'd be losing some sleep if I kept at it any longer! This is the most graphically gorgeous, realistic, immersive video gaming experience I'd ever imagined short of real VR, and the only reason I'm not giving it a full 5 stars is the fact that the game control is a constant bear; very awkward, weighed-down and unintuitive... the cause of far more damage and death than might be necessary otherwise. Hopefully Capcom will get this problem cleaned up with the impending sequels. Until then, though, this "Resident Evil" can easily be considered among the most undisputable reasons to own a GameCube!!

GameCube Gets Gory

I had very high expectations for the Resident Evil remake, but somehow Capcom managed to surpass them. The graphics are unbelievable, probably better than any other game out there. Even the GameCube-haters will have to admit that the new Resident Evil looks magnificient on the Cube. The story is also expanded greatly- "With two playable characters, three difficulty settings, almost a dozen different endings, and branching story paths depending on whether certain objectives are met, the game also offers you plenty to do." - GameSpot.com. The layouts and puzzles have changed too, so don't expect to utilize much old knowledge from the original Resident Evil game. There's even new defensive weapons (which you use to attack a zombie once it grabs you) and a quick 180 spin, both are very helpful in tight spots. The music is appropriately dark, the sound effects are perfectly scary, and the Dolby Surround is also very nicely done. The cinema scenes are beautiful (with no loading time -yay), and good voice acting. The whole game is just wonderful, but it is very gory and best suited for older "mature" crowds. So to all the people that think GameCube is for kiddies- get ready for a rude awakening beginning with Resident Evil, and shortly followed by Eternal Darkness (which I can't wait for, coming this June). The new Resident Evil on GameCube is simply amazing, it could quite possibly turn out to be the best game of 2002. Go out and buy it, and if you don't have a GameCube then get one!

I had heard good things about this game, and how amazing the graphics are, so I had to see for myself. I rented the game and watched the intro movie when I started a new game. I was completely amazed. The graphics are just unmatchable. After the movie, Chis walked through a door and just stood there. I didn't know what was going on, and then I realized that this was the gameplay. I don't care what those Playstation 2 and Xbox fanatics say, but Resident Evil has the best gameplay graphics I have ever seen. Like I explained a minute ago, I couldn't tell the difference between the movie and the gameplay! Well, you are probobly sick of hearing about graphics, so about the game itself. It may take a while to get used to the controls, but once you do it is worth it. The game is much improved from the original and much more fun, too. You play as either Chris Redford or Jill Valentine in Racoon City. A plauge of monsters is storming through the town and the S.T.A.R.S. members must stop them. This game is a must for Gamecube owners. It it is availible to rent or buy it immediatly!

Resident Evil on the Nintendo Gamecube is absolutely amazing on all levels. It is definately the best looking game on any of the next generation consoles and even most PC games. The graphics are just purely incredible and will make your jaw drop open. Everytime I play this I am just amazed at what Capcom has pulled off. The sound and music are also well done and will make you jump out of your seat in horror. I can't even begin to count the times the living daylights has been scared out of me by something jumping out from a corner, through a window, closet or the darkness.
This game is definately one I would recommend purchasing. You will not be able to experience it all or even finish it by just renting it. This game is pretty violent though, but not as bad as most of the first-person shooters on PCs. If you have children you may just want to rent it to see if you think it is too violent or scarey for them.
If you've played the original Resident Evil on the Playstation, then I would also recommend you purchase this if you liked the original. In addition to all the graphic upgrades, the game is 70% different than the original (new puzzles and new areas and surprises).
This game is also one to show off to all your friends and demonstrate what the Nintendo Gamecube can really do - Make great games.
