I would like to comment on some of the points that reviewers have made against DMC:

1. Difficulty: Many reviewers have commented that the game is too easy. The only way it could be perceived this way is if the reviewer was playing on Easy mode, where it truly is difficult to lose. Try playing on Normal for a good challenge, or Hard for a knock-down, drag-out fight.

2. Camera angles: The camera system is drastically improved from the Resident Evil system because the analog stick always moves Dante relative to the camera. If the camera changes while Dante is walking, you can hold down the same direction and he will continue walking in that direction until you let up. It's easy to get used to.

I should also note that the camera MOVES in many places, and most camera shots will show most, if not all, of the room you are fighting in. When you do have to cast a few blind shots off-screen, Dante automatically aims for you. I originally thought the auto-aim feature was... easy, but it just takes some of the frustration out of aiming at an enemy in 3D space. Don't worry, even with auto aiming, you will have the great challenge of keeping Dante out of harm's way.

3. Game length: If you play on Easy mode and don't look for any secrets items or missions, the gameplay should be less than 8 hours. But on Normal mode, you will find yourself using a lot of those Yellow orbs on the tougher bosses, greatly increasing game time.

I encourage everyone to pick this game up. I have rented it twice and I will still probably buy it because I keep wanting more...

This is one of the best games I have played on the PS2. It has great graphics and very good gameplay. The only problem with it is its very short, it should take you about 8 to 15 hours to beat. But there are also other modes of play, so this game should keep you busy for a long time

Short and very sweet

Devil May Cry is a PS2 game which brings in some intense action. The graphics are superb, as is the gameplay. The storyline is quite lacking however. During fights, the game switches to playing some fast and heavy metal beats that help fuel the player. The fixed camera angles in some areas are very obnoxious. If you're looking for depth and lenth in a game, move on. But, if you're looking for some fun, heavy action, this is the game for you. Total play time to beat the game is around 6-7 hours...good for a quick fix.

Great game but needed improvement

Okay....my opinion on Devil May Cry. I've played through about half the game.

It's a rather fun game. The fighting can get quite intense. In the beginning it's more hack and slash/button mashing, but once you learn skills such as Vortex and the rapid jab thing it becomes great. It requires fast thinking because when there is more than one monster in the room, they don't attack you one at a time.

Capcom seems to have this whole soul fetish. Both DMC and Onimusha involve souls. Souls of DMC are more of an afterthought. You sacrifice them to recieve more skills.

The story is....okay. It's a generic story, but it's alot more well supported than most generic stories.

Boss fights are pure gold.

They involve actual thinking and strategy instead of just..."Hmm...I'll wait until he does this one particular move, and then I'll attack."

And the bosses aren't bad. The characters actually develop a rapport of sorts with them. The lava spider, Phantom, and the Griffon actually run away, only to come back later seeking revenge.

The camera angles...are just....bad. When you're fighting a boss, the biggest problem is not his "blow everything to hell and you lose about half your life" move. It's the camera angles. The camera stays focused on Dante. ALL THE TIME. It becomes difficult to counterattack the boss because you know he's behind you. You just don't know WHERE.

The game is your standard action/adventure game. "Find the Staff of Hades and give it to the statue to get a powerup." The game would've been ALOT better if it was all in one. Instead, it's mission based.

Anyway...it's a good game. But, like all good games, it has it's drawbacks. If you are a fan of fun, fast-paced action, get it. You'll enjoy it.

Tons of fun, at least to begin with

"Devil May Cry" is one of the prettiest games I've ever seen. Brought to you by the same folks who did "Onimusha", it's got the same beautful backgrounds, lavish creatures, and smooth character movements as that amazing game. Everyone who sees this game is blown away by just how good it looks.

Gameplay-wise, "Devil May Cry" owes a lot to previous Capcom titles "Onimusha" and "Resident Evil" (being more like "Onimusha" over-all). You trigger events in the game using the same familiar "place object A into object B" gimmick found in the other Capcom titles. I've never been a big fan of these "puzzles", since they're too simple to be engaging or interesting. They almost always trigger something pretty on the screen, though, so it's not so bad.

The combat is fast and furious. You wind up collecting certain kinds of "points" from each successfull combat just like in "Onimusha" (similar colored orbs that you can use for a number of things, liking healing, weapon upgrades, and so-on). Some of the bosses are quite challenging on "normal" difficulty. Admittedly, the 3D perspective can be a little confusing when you're hopping furiously all around an enormous creature and trying to land blows to a single spot. You don't mind, though, since the story is somewhat interesting and the music and visuals are stunning.

Certain of the swords in the game allow you to spend points on ability upgrades for that weapon. Personalization gimmicks like that are really cool, and you quickly learn which abilities are worth buying and which aren't. Rest assured, though, that the tougher you become, the tougher the creatures in the game become as well. Game balance remains consistent pretty much throughout the story.

In all, this has been an excellent game. My only complaint is that the combat does get a bit stale after awhile. The story isn't quite as interesting as the story in "Onimusha", so you just aren't as compelled to hack through boss-after-boss on your way to the end of the story. That said, this is still an awesome game that's got several days worth of good solid fun in it (my boyfriend played it for about two and a half weeks solid). A definite must-play for fans of "Onimusha" and "Resident Evil". Check it out.

This is one of the truly best games for the system. It is a lot of fun to slash and hack at monsters in a game and this one is just about the top of the heap when it comes to this. Also appreciated are the amazing visuals, excellent character control and decent storyline. Best of all for me was the fact that the game is not too frustrating. Easy mode is fun to play through and doesnt have too many of the wandering around wondering what to do next moments of Resident Evil. After you finish this mode you can go back and go through in hard mode with ramped up monsters etc. Overall it is a fast paced thrill ride, definitely worth your dollars or at least an extended rental. A word of caution, it is a very violent game so it is not for everyone. Still for those mature enough to not be scarred by a story about a half man/half demon this game will hit the spot. It is a single player adventure.
