Worth the Embarassment

I think I've mentioned elsewhere that I'm not much of an action gamer, preferring RPGs instead. I do like to try out games in other genre, and Devil May Cry has certainly been the recipient of much critical (and enthusiast acclaim). With the price being as attractive as it is I decided that this would be my semi-annual dip into the world of compulsive destruction.

The story is straightforward. Girl drives into occult detective's office, stabs him with his own sword, then asks for his help in fighting the underworld. It seems that a BIG evil is planning to take over the earth and has set up shop in a castle on Malay Island. Dante, by the way, is the son of the demon knight who originally defeated this particular BIG evil. So revenge is also on the menu.

What ensues is a mad dash through a gothic nightmare that augments normal castle architecture with jungles, ships, airplanes, outer space, and, of course, hell. [I guess the story wasn't so straightforward after all] All of this is an excuse for some of the most detailed graphics that I have ever seen.

The animation is of such high quality that you can't always tell where a cut scene ends and the action starts again. And, lest I forget, an array of weapons, gadgets, and puzzles that kept me busy from start to finish. Very little was spared in making this a spectacular playing experience.

My only complaints aren't about the game, but my own mediocre skills. While I'm not exactly arthritic, my ability to deftly poke and stroke my controller is substandard. And Devil May Cry is a game that requires both pinpoint accuracy and good timing. Which means that the twelve hours of play that ended with me stumbling into the finale did nothing for my self-esteem. But if you have two thumbs (instead of ten) you will find this a delightful pastime - a must play, should own game.

simply well made...one of the true greats.

"they don't make 'em like they used to"...wait! devil
may cry is the industry's answer to that challenge.
"but how do you know that? the game isn't out yet!"
for the few that don't know this already, it's out
in japan, and about 90 percent of japanese games are
in english, with japanese subtitles, of course. rest
assured...this review is based on the full game.
you have to hand it to capcom...making engaging games
is in their genes! take a look at some of the finer
points:
PROS
-graphics- you know, we hear way too much about
graphics these days. back in the day graphics sold
games, but not so anymore. we gamers have "grown
up" we're smarter now...gameplay makes a game. so
why mention graphics? well, the fact of the matter is
graphics do matter. they help devolop atmosphere.
now, many times i've been guilty of taking graphics for
granted, but wait until you get a load of this game in
action! it's as if the ps2 were made for this game
alone. and the graphics do not tax the gameplay one
bit. you'll fight off as many enemies as the game
feels it's capable of cramming onto the screen at any
given time, all high poly with no slowdown...awesome.
-music- i'm a stickler for the audio department, but
capcom seldom lets me down. resident evil-esque music
haunts you, until enemies pop up. the music gets
intense and sets the mood perfectly. the sound effects
and general ambience are outstanding as well. the
atmosphere permeates from this one as grass ruffles and
guns scream out their blasts. superb!
-gameplay- "okay, so it looks and sounds great...so do
so many flops now-a-days." true, so what's to get
all excited about? what makes it unique and stand out?
the gameplay! one of the first combo's you'll be
bustin' out has you using a sword and twin pistols
together. something i haven't read about yet(because not
many have played the full version, yet) is how many
"toys" you can use. believe me, the sword and twin
pistols are the bottom of the barrel...and guns come
with unlimited ammo. think onimusha, another capcom
great, for some of the feel of the combat system. also,
collecting orbs from your defeated foes to "level up"
of sorts, and learn new techniques comes intact. plus,
the silky smooth controls truly consider what gamers
have been complaining about since the time when the term
"3-D" actually impressed. the gameplay makes this game
fun, and that's what playing a game is about, right?
right!
okay, so what could be bad?
well...not much. nothing, really. here are some
nitpicks!
CONS(nitpicking)
-jumping-my nitpick with this is that it's realistic.
crazy, huh? it uses the system from the first
castlevania where you can't change directions in mid-
air. there is nothing wrong with this until you include
platform jumping in your exercise routine. in defense,
the game does help you along in the few platform jumping
moments...
-respect the glass- how many of you gamers
have wasted a bullet or two just to see if the mirror
or glass would break in resident evil, dino crisis,
onimusha, etc.? it didn't work, did it? not here,
either! i can take down the mightiest spider, fend
off the most hideous minion of evil, heck...even give
a t-rex a run for his money, but break glass? huh-uh!
no way! if capcom keeps this up, it could just be
as tradition as a dove in a john woo film!
oh, well. i can't nitpick anymore. this game is a
masterpiece! wait 'til you fight the bosses! face
legions of enemies that fill rooms gauntlet style!
clear your first room of baddies and think you must
be a god! all the detail, all the atmosphere, all
the items, enemies, weapons, secret missions and
attitude! all the time i could have been playing
while typing this! it's violent, so if you're a
concerned parent, keep this in mind, but if you've
played capcom's latest games then you know what to
expect in this department. trust me, get this game...
it's that good!

Firstly, this game is ownage. It's gameplay graphics actually look better than the FMV sequences (which can be a good thing or a bad thing) in my opinion. Dante looks so real, it's amazing.

Graphics bottom line: 10/10

The gameplay.... How can you not go wrong with this game when you want excellent gameplay? Here's one EXTREMELY cool thing to do. First, you blast an enemy with the shotgun. Then, while it's stunned, you perform around 10 stabs at extreme speed and then perform High Time. Nice, huh?

And the other thing about the gameplay is that almost EVERYTHING is interactive. Say you need 5 more Red Orbs, but there are no more monsters. Simple solution: Shoot or slash Armor, chairs, tables and basically everything that looks like you can destroy.

Dante's movements are fluid with no glitches and he can turn a jump into a glide when he's blasting away monsters.

Gameplay Bottom Line: 10/10

Next, the story. It's interesting enough, but it isn't all that creative. I mean, the idea of a man being half-man-half-devil is all good and sweet, but the Dante-losing-his-family-to-evil-bit has been done before. But don't get me wrong. It's a great story other than that.

Story bottom line: 8/10

Next, the creativity of monsters. Hmmm..... Huge demonic puppets, Grim Reapers, Grim Reapers with huge scissors, huge spiders, twisted thing called "Fetish" who performs fire attacks.... Oh come on!

Creativity of monsters bottom line: 10/10

Next, creepy-ness factor! Walking through hall ways with spine tingling music playing and evil creatures able to pop out from the walls..... Is that scary enough?

Creepy-ness factor bottom line: 10/10

Over-all bottom line score: 10/10

Buy this game. You will NOT regret it.

I really tried to love this game...

While i enjoyed this game for the short time i played it, it is not the 'masterpiece' that many think it is.

The pros:
The gameplay and graphics are superb. Plus, the main character Dante sets off an aura of 'coolness' not seen in video games in a long time. Dante just stands out as an important character.

The cons:
The gameplay gets old. There are no puzzles in this game like some people are stating. You see a statue and it says 'it looks like there are three holes to put something.' Then you go to the next door and there is a giant glowing item on a pedestal. You examine it and it is a 'trident.' I hardly call that puzzple solving...

Also the enemies get very tedious and repetitive. You fight the same enemies in every mission and they respawn when you reenter rooms, which really stinks. And whats with fighting the same 3 bosses 5 times each?

And finally the game is just way too short. I beat the game in around 5 hours my first play through, without a guide or anything. 5 hours!
Good thing i didnt pay the full price of a new game...

All in all this game was pretty enjoyable in its 5 hours of gameplay but i liked this game, not loved it.
Still, for the low price this game can be got for, you cant go wrong. There are worse games out there than Devil May Cry.

The reinvention of Action/Horror

This game is like Resident Evil, only "cool". You're finally given a character that can walk and chew gum at the same time! Seriously, the range of movement you are given is remarkable, and the ability to lock onto an enemy to attack while you move is a long overdue addition to the genre. The graphics and animations are excellent and combine to form a great atmosphere for the game. There are plenty of weapons and items to obtain throughout your adventure, but to get the most out of the game, you'll want to stick to your twin guns and sword. There is little else in gaming to compare to lifting a demon off the ground with your sword, then switching to guns and keep him floating up in the air until he explodes, with both guns blazing. This is the epitomy of "cool". There are plenty of extra hidden missions and side goals to keep you coming back for more, long after you beat it. This game is reminiscent of thumb-blistering, action-packed games of old, such as Contra and Life Force, and as such, is an instant classic.

When you buy this game and turn the power button
on your SonyPlayStation 2 you will be ushered into
a whole new world. This game is an experience to be
had like none other. The hero Dante and sidekick trish
trash your screen with martial arts moves before posing
during the excellent intro. From there you know that your
in for a treat. The one thing that you'll immediately
notice is that the designers created personalities for
the main characters in the story. Dante stands out and so
ddoes the devil knight. The gameplay is main selling point
aand Capcom delivers it in outstanding glory. This is the type
oof game you'll be playing months after you buy Metal Gear Solid 2 and Madden 2002. The special effects are done so convincing that the action is more bolder and electricfying than any game
in it's genre. Right now, as of 10/28/01 I can't see how
anything can top it. Metal Gear Solid 2 has some serious
competition. Dante is armed with twin handguns named ebony and
ivory. He's also armed with a sword that eventually gets upgraded. Capcom didn't just create some brainless piece of
software, they went all out to satisfy the customer.
Dante learns new moves with his swords and becomes a devil with
amazing power and agility. The hero's devil powers increase after every level and it's up to you do decide how your going to upgrade. As you kill enemies you receive red orbs, after each
mission you can upgrade your skills or buy potions and other
helpful items. That was clever because most of the items and abilties cost 300 to 7000 reb orbs. That equals lots of action
with tough enemies. The bad guys are relentless on our hero
as he tries to save the day. I died ten times alone on first boss, and he comes back!! You have to watch how your enemies move to be successful in this game. Capcom successfully mixed a good story with excellent visuals and sound with outstanding gameplay. As a result I think that this game is a masterpiece and should be bought by millions of PS2 owners, and non believers of the system as well. Even fans of the action/adventure genre should buy it. Either way you can't lose
on this game that is going to eventually have a sequel.

Beautiful Game

This game is the best action game I have ever played and the first game that has hooked me in front of my PS2 for hours on-end, unable to get away.

The graphics are amazing, and the game switches camera angles to give the full view of the beautiful scenery. There are even a few levels you'll want to go back and play again to explore the breathtaking views presented to you. You'll see lights streaming through windows and the amazing perspective of your shadow as it elongates or shrinks based on the perspective of the light.

The game play is also very well done. This game excels when fighting large groups of enemies using your devil arms (lightening swords, fire gauntlets, etc.) and standard guns (dual pistols, shotgun, etc.). The action becomes highly fast paced and you can't help but love the commentary on your battle techniques ranging from "Dull" to "Stylish". Doing the signature move of knocking the enemy into the air and suspending him there as you rapidly fire from your twin handguns, named Ebony and Ivory, will bring a grin to your face every time.

Still, the game isn't perfect. It shows its Resident Evil roots with some of its flaws. The fixed camera angles can be frustrating. You'll find yourself shooting at off-camera enemies from time to time and this can become extremely maddening on the boss the levels. It's also trying on some of the timed levels when the camera angle changes while you're running at full speed and you must fight the with the analog stick to get it to switch to the new direction.

The replay value is also questionable. It took me 20 hours to beat the game on the normal level. Each time you beat a difficultly level it unlocks the next, but I didn't see a high value in playing the same levels and seeing the same story line again and again on harder levels. I always wonder why games like this don't throw in multi-player combat to greatly increase game replay value.

Overall this is a wonderful game to play through at least once and show off to friends. If you don't want to buy it, rent it when you've got a spare 20 hours and play through it once.

NES style for a new generation

Devil May Cry is not about it's length, it's variety of monsters, or it's story. It's about good ol' fashioned "killing stuff". In this regard, the game excels, and shouldn't be considered as anything else.

About the killing stuff...in Devil May Cry, it's frenetic. When you're attacked, it's not simply by one or two enemies, but in droves. Luckily for you, Capcom has armed you to the teeth. The fighting system is a combination of sword and gunplay which blend together seemlessly. Link together a couple of sword blows as a combo, uppercut your foe into the air, and then finish him by blasting his corpse to pieces before it hits the ground with one seemless motion. Devil May Cry actually rewards you for the style and variety you put into mixing sword and gun attacks. The action is very fast paced and will instantly remind you of old school classics such as COntra and Mega Man.

The graphics are incredible in Devil May Cry. Dante and his adversaries look great and animate well; the backgrounds are awesome. One caveat that some may have is that the camera angles are fixed, a la Resident Evil (the game was originally intended to be an RE game). While the camera tends to behave nicely, there are some instances when it can become a real chore, especially during the boss fights. The sound is also awesome. From the cheesy guitar riffs to the blast of your dual pistols -- it all works and comes together.

A complaint many have with this game is its length. Indeed, the game is undeniably short. However, the time you do spend with this game is unforgettable, good fun. Metal Gear Solid (Playstation) was also a very short game, but this didn't stop the public from deeming it "best playstation game ever", and Devil May Cry works along similar lines. In fact, I just bought my PS2 with Tony Hawk 3, Metal Gear SOlid 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, and Devil May Cry. Devil May Cry has stolen the majority of my playtime thus far.

Short but sweet, Devil May Cry is one of the best pure action games to come around in a long time.

Litigious parents of psychopaths BEWARE

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 6

If you’re the litigious parent of a psychotic child who has trouble discerning the real world from fantasy, this title is probably not for you. Although the game is quite violent with characters including the player getting repeatedly shot, stabbed, and burned, the violence is directed at fantasy underworld enemies who are trying to kill you. You play as Dante, a half human half-devil character proceeding through 23 missions in and around a medieval castle on an island.

Dante journeys on each mission accumulating weapons and colored orbs primarily used for money and health. The end of each mission is usually preceded by a challenging duel requiring strategy and insight into the strength and weaknesses of the level boss. Most orbs are obtained by defeating various types of enemies that are found throughout the mission, but others can be found by investigating the lushly rendered 3D surroundings throughout the course of the game.

The true brilliance of this game and the quality that allows for repeated playing is in the compelling fighting ability. The variety of weapons and attacks are a joy to discover as one becomes proficient utilizing the controls and gains the skills to deploy the full arsenal on his enemies.

The game has 3 levels of play (Easy, Normal, and Hard). Completing the game in the Easy or Normal mode will take from 6 -10 hours of hardcore nonstop playing depending on your gaming I.Q. To complete the game fully, including finding and completing all the secret missions, maxing out weapons and health, and finishing Hard mode will take considerably longer. You can purchase an official strategy guide where you purchase your game or get some online help at Gamespot.com, which has helpful free guides available.

An excellent all around game and most likely the top RPG (role playing game) to be released on the PS2 to date. Be aware that Devil May Cry is a one-player game. (...)
