I'm a professional tuner and have been racing in endurance races for years, so I thought that Need For Speed Underground would be right up my alley and a nice way to kick back. The graphics are good, with the exception of the "Fast and the Furious" nitrous blur. For something to mindlessly play it's fine. However, if you have any experience driving cars in the fashion that you do in this game, the game is frustrating at best. The physics are unrealistic, and the "competition" can be suicidal at times, trying to cause you to wreck while wrecking themselves in the process... not to mention that the computer will always have a superior car or better upgrades. Watch for traffic parked in the road or, mystically happening to always in your way. It's amazing how a car going 100+ mph can stop instantly when side-swiping a wall...
So in the end, it's an ok game for wasting time in the evening. If you are looking for a realistic "tuning/racing" game, this isn't it. This game simply feeds into the "rice-boy world" where appearance is all that matters, not real world performance.

NFSU is definitely a pioneer in starting a trend of new racing games... With the automotive market growing on customization, it is just natural that you can do it to your car in a video game... Upgrade parts for more hp, and add body kits and neons... NFS was taking a step in a different direction... have tons of fun playing this game and has the ability to connect to the internet to race against real people...

I just wanted to thank ea for making such an amazing game. I have played other need for speed games and were never really excited about them because they never featured any real cars. Most of the previous nfs games featured lamborginis, ferraris, and some domestics like the dodge viper, but this games gives you cars that regular people can afford. Being a fan of import cars like, toyota mr-2s, eclipses, civic (hatchbacks) and, the sti subaru wrx i was happy to see these cars licenced instead of just changing certain features and calling them by different names like in midnight club and tokyo etreme racer series. the customization in the game is exceptionaly well done, there's tons of visual effects to chose from though it takes a while to unlock them all.
I however was unhappy with the performace customization because you cant change the stock civic engine to a b16a to build more speed or swap a regular 420a non turbo for a 4g63 in the eclipse. Also the game gives you no dyno responses like how much horsepower you have or how much torque you car pulls and you cant pick brand names of products you have to chose from different brand assortments. I'd like to see which turbo is going to build more psi's when it spools the greddy or the garret t2835. i'd like to choose my intercooler and actually see the horsepower gain and there are no licenced body kits either. I'm sure c-west or veilside would have given you the licence to do that. All of that still doesn't take away from the game though because the upgrades are very informative for instance when you do a weight reduction on your car it tells you exactly what they are taking out like the rear seats and spare tires and removing interior panels etc.
The graphics are amazing, the effects of driving are well recieved. When you going very fast in the drag mode the camera shakes and the screen blurs to simulate speed when you hit the nitrous. When you hit a shopping cart it fly's right over the camera like it was taken strait out of a wachoski brothers film. Though physical damage to the car would have been a nice edition the gameplay would have suffered due to repeatedly having to fix damages. the driving is well done though slightly arcade like i felt i was going one hundred twenty down a crowded high way. My favorite mode is the drag race because you have to properly shift in order to keep rpm's high and keep your speed and its even possible to blow your engine if you stay over the red line to long. I didn't like the way the shift needle tells you when you have to shift i found that more satisfying in the demo when the colored dots didn't pop up.
Though I have a few minor pet peeves with the game it is still an amazing experience to behold i am defineitly glad i spent the money for it because i will play this game threw and threw until my fingers are calisced worse the the guys thumbs in that old blockbuster commercial.

Comparing the graphics and the fact gotham racing 2 is live, underground will never match it. NFS games have always been at least somewhat arcadelike driving. It would be a better comparison to put this game up against the first gotham racing. If any of you writing reviews have ever played xbox live, I think you would call ps2 an inferior system too. Even though AI has improved greatly in the last year, there still is no better oponent than another human. I can't think of many new games xbox has come out with recently that doesn't have online capabilities, yet ps2 still hasn't made any real move in response. They need to just come out with a third one that can handle better graphics.
