Very disappointed...with the looks of things before the game came out it looked rad..but then traffic flew in, and your car flipped a few seconds, putting you behind. Then the gay reverse...another few LONG seconds...putting you way behind. The steering is difficult...it isnt fun. Up the first 5 or so races its cool, ur enjoying it. Then the sewer and port and industrial races come up and your stuck there doin these races at least 3 times. Then 7 lap races??? COME ON. This game is not fun. The camera angles stink.
However, I did give it 2 stars. The vehicles and the story mode were pretty cool. Changing NOS level and lights, rims, body kits. Vinyl and Decals. But then theres no replay no cops, hard turning. Its not really a racing game, it just frustrates you! Your car says it has great handling but it really doesnt.Another thing, it wouldve been cool if you couldve gone back underground after you beat it. Now we have to start another career mode? Please. With these things listed above it would been a great game. Unfourtunatly, they werent there. Which makes this game final: not fun, frustrating , more SMOOTH turns and forget about those "dramatic" crashes.. just make it fun. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 is probably better than this game. Rent this game WAY before you buy it. MAYBE if your one of the millions out there, you will enjoy it. I didnt

Need For Speed Underground is a great game... It allows you to buy a car of your choice (from the selection) and unlock upgrades to increase your reputation meter (giving you more points at the end of a race) As you progress through the game you will unlock new upgrades such as Nitrous, Turbo chargers, Weight Reduction, Hoods, Side Skirts, Reer and Front Bummpers plus more. The game storyline in this game is from starting out as a street racer that is unknown to the world working your way up the charts to become the best Drag, Drift, Circut, and Sprint racer. As your unlock more cars you can trade in your current one for a new and better one....The graphics are great and the effects such as the nitrous blur effect and the Turbo Chargers sound when you shift. ----Your not gonna beat this game in one day.
The best car racing game, without question!!!!!!!!

This IS by far the best car racing game. The cars are soo cool, and this is the most customizable car game there is!!!!!!!There are too many customizable things, things I didnt know street racing cars had. This game didnt get me board for at least5 hours.Trust me ,if your having trouble with deciding on what racing game to get,and I mean any other racing game ,this is it.The upgradeable things are unlimited almost, and using all the nitrouse upgrades after winning races(I dont mean you get a nos uprade every time you win a race it take alot longer so dont expect it immediately)So what I mean is dont get any other racing game. One last awsome thing is the soundtrack.:-)
Awesome. The sense of speed can't be beat

This game is a very awesome game. It has the classic Need for Speed engine but also has a number of new features and enhancements that make this an awesome game. Before I get into this review, let me just say that my main experience in racing games is getting all the cars, tracks, and winning every event in Hot Persuit 2.
First, I'll comment on your sense of speed. You race in an urban environment with a lot of lights and a lot of walls. The streetlights swirl as you speed. The game is so realistic in its sense of speed and the way that light behaves when you move at 200 mph. Not only that, but you need to react fast to the curves or else you'll fall behind very badly. The engine is a lot faster in this game than in Hot Persuit 2.
Next, is the 2 completely unique and innovative race modes in the game: Drag and Drift. Drag racing is where you race in a straight line to see which car is faster, but it still can be very hard, because you have to shift gears perfectly, avoid traffic, and figure out when to use nitro, or you lose the race very easily. Drift racing is a race mode where you get points on how well you slide. In drift mode, you have to slowly get into a slide, then swerve sideways to get a lot of points and the most points wins, not the person who finishes first. If you hit the wall, you lose the points for your slide.
You also get to customize your car. There are many different customization options you have. You can uprade its visuals on the exterior, the interior performance, or trade it in for a new car. In the exterior options, you add or change or remove parts. You can change rims, add custom hoods, roof scoops, spoilers, and side skirts, and uprading these gets your reputation higher, which earns you more points for unlocking visual upgrades. In the visuals, you also paint your car and you get to paint its body, spoiler, and rims. You can also add window tints that are different colors and darknesses. You can also get neon lights that come in different colors. Last, but not least, there are the vinyls, which put vinyl on your car for up to four layers.
You can also upgrade your car's performance. There are 9 categories of uprading your performance: Engine, ECU and fuel system, suspension package, brake kits, drivetrain packages, weight reduction kits, nitrous oxide, and something else. With each one, you start with stock performance and your car becomes infintely faster as you add level 1, level 2, and the highest level 3 performance in your car.
The game does have a few flaws. Upgrading your cars is made easy but accessing them in quick race mode and in underground mode is hard. In underground mode, you made modifications to one car and each car in underground mode gets those, so when you change cars you still have the same upgrades. In quick race mode, you get to use the parts and cars you bought in underground mode for no extra charge. In quick race mode, you upgrade each car individually, which gets long and tedious. Each car is about the same. Once each one has all the upgrades you can get at the time, their difference isn't as substancial as it was in Hot Persuit 2. Also, the indicators of speed, acceleration, and handling aren't always accurate and you can't rely on them too much.
One of the most defeating flaws of the game is the fustration and annoyance involved with each race of the game. In underground mode, there are 111 events and they are not presented in a tree like in HP2. They are presented in a much more linear fashion and you have to complete each event before moving on. A lot of races are fun but some are so fustrating you just want to stop completely. A good example is the 6 lap endurance circuit races that take forever to win and you have to be perfect throughout the course to win. The game is forgiving, but you can easily mess up toward the end and fail the entire race that could've taken you 20 times to get as far as you did. Also, once you get past the unique race modes, the awesome visuals, and the modifications, there isn't much to motivate yout to continue to play. When events get to frustrating, many times, you can't skip them like you could in HP2. However, when they aren't frustrating, it can be fun. In HP2, you can be motivated by getting faster cars, but the cars in underground only get faster when you upgrade them, but getting more upgrades eventually doesn't become motivation.
In the end, even though the game is not perfect and has some flaws, its still worth the buy. You might want to rent it first, but the game is still awesome and unique.

Just got this a few days ago and have not been able to put it down. The different racing modes are excellent, and so far there is enough variety in the content that the racing never seems repetitive.
What really struck me though, and prompted me to write a review is the graphics. Simply put, they're amazing and they run beautifully at high res on a not-so-new PC. I've gotten into the habit of tuning down the various display options in games to get the framerate up, but with Need for Speed Underground I can keep the options up and it runs GREAT!
Great game, can't say enough about it.
Mediocre and Unoriginal

Unlike most of the idiots who've blindly given this game 5 stars, i'll rate it on it's own merits. Firstly, this game isn't the best NFS ever made. That would be NFS 3 (made in 1998). Secondly this game does have the best graphics in the series but not the best on the PS2 (that is going to be "Gran Turismo 4")
Now on to the negative aspects. The game has one and only one level. You'll have to race through the same level 111 times!!!
No level variety whatsoever which is a shame for a respected game franchise. The music is very annoying and doesnt fit the game unlike say Burnout 2. For some reason EA has decided to put the garbage rap songs to play on the menu all the time. But don't worry, you can easily turn them off along with the rest of the music. Thats not really strange since EA are a 100% politically correct company unlike for example Rockstar. Also the color palette used in the single level is very dreary and will bore you easily. So the final word is if you want to buy a racing game and have lots of fun go and buy "Burnout 2" for the time being or wait a few months and get the promising "Gran Turismo 4" which is said to have "500" cars!!!
Mind you this game has only "20" in total.
It's simply not worth the $50.
SUCKS EGGS!!!

This game sucks. PLain an simple. It's a good thing I rented it first. There's no variety in the courses. I felt like I was stuck riding the same course over and over again. The cars are cheesy too, and so are the mods you can do to them. The drag racing is ok but gets boring after a while. Some music tracks were ok. It's a good thing that you can turn some of the tracks off though because i'd say a good half of them suck bad. The only good thing about the game is the graphics and speed you get while driving. Those are top notch. For that i'll give it 2 stars. I no doubt had a better time playing Need For Speed 2: Hot Pursuit. If you want the best game in the series, that's the one to buy.
Not worth it

This game is not worth what they price it. This is one of the worst EA Games I have ever played! Its complete unfair, even on easy the cars are at least 2 levels BEYOND you.. Takes for ever to unlock things, You never have enough money to buy anything! Don't get it until it hits 20 bucks, even then its a iffy.
