The Sweetest Racing Game On The Market

This game is so sweet expecially when you can upgrade your car with nitrous oxide booster to get a top speed of about 200 mph. (only level three NOS.) It is also awesome to customize your car to make it look sweet. For example: you can put a sweet looking spoiler on your car or you can put neon on the bottom of your car. (Visual displays on your car increase your reputation and how ever many reputation stars you have; for example level five reputation multiplies your style points five times.) Style points are earned by doing power slides or taking shortcuts; style points are earned to get sweet looking vinyls and decals on your car. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to pick up a racing game and just have fun with it!
Enjoy!!

Alright children, I'll keep it short and sweet . . . this game is absolutely worth the $50. It is absolutely one of the most solid productions I've seen, slick and stylized, with adrenaline rushes aplenty. On to the review . . .
Gameplay - The most important part of any game, and Underground hits a home run here. You start out with a quick introductory race which you have to win to get started, then you get your choice of one of five cars to enter the Underground with. From there its on to Drifting, Sprint and Circuit races, and the most white-knuckled, heart-pumping event of all, Drag racing. A quick synopsis of each event
- Drifting - Like most of the ricers out there, this is all about show and not really about go. See how long you can skid your car around tracks of various configurations. Score points for longer power slides, hitting "bonus zones", and knowing how to drive (ie not hitting the wall, stupid).
- Circuit/Sprint/Last Man Standing - All are pretty much slight variations on the same theme - get to the finish line first. In Circuit, you compete against three other cars in a lap race. Sprint is a one-time shootout, first one to the finish takes the prize, and Last Man Standing is a modified circuit race in which the last car at the conclusion of each lap is eliminated until there is only one car left.
- Drag - Probably the most exciting mode . . . line up against three other vehicles in a sprint to the finish. Drag is different than the previously mentioned Sprint mode because, as in real life, shifting is crucial - shift too early and you miss your peak power - shift too late and you burn off horsepower and lose speed. Get into fifth or sixth gear, hit the nitrous and go. Besides the other racers, you have traffic to contend with, obstacles to avoid, and in some cases, trains to jump. Be as smooth as possible, don't clip anything, get your shifts down and you'll win.
Graphics - This is where the title of my review comes in to play. Lights reflect off the cars and streets, the environments are stunningly detailed (not that you'll be moving slow enough to notice), the visual effects and sense of speed are just stunning. The streets look beautiful, though strangely they're all wet. The cars are lovingly rendered, from the ridiculously large wings to every layer of ricey vinyl and decals. Watch sparks fly as you rub a guardrail or see smoke spew as your opponent skids through a turn. A gorgeous game.
Control - Fantastic. Good and tight, fight that FF oversteer in your early car, then feel the burn as AWD has you sticking to the track like glue. Upgrades make noticeable differences - the car is much sharper after them.
Sound - Songs? Boooorrrrriiiiiinnnngggg . . . bust out your own tunes, you'll be happier. Sounds? Engines rev high, tires squeal, nitrous injects . . . its all their and beautiful.
Misc - Clean up time. Haven't played online yet, so I can't comment on it, but I'm sure it rocks. No replay is frustrating, but hey, you can't get everything. There are some little odd quirks that annoy me (like asking me three freaking times if I want to save my game after I select "Save Game"), but in all, this is a good, arcade style racer (ie you won't be tuning camber, boost PSI, gears, etc) that should entertain for many, MANY hours.
BEST GAME OF THE YEAR

I can't express how much fun this game is. It's so addictive and you will not want to stop playing. I burned out a controller playing this game and it was well worth it. The selection of manufacturers and cars is excellent. Graphics are phenomenal.
If you're thinking about buying this game as a gift or for yourself...STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND BUY IT NOW. I would pay $100 for this game.
The only bad part is that it can be beaten very fast if you know what you're doing. But it's still a fantastic game.
OH NOOO WHAT HAPPENED TO NFS?!?!

Remember that movie The fast and the furious.....Well think of that movie fused into a game and just as idiotic. This game is the lamest excuse for a racing game ever. I am the biggest NFS fan but this hits the all time low. It is surprising Electronic Arts could have ever thought up something this stupid. I was excited when the game first came out until realizing that it was nothing more then a cheap offshoot of lame racing films. The customizablity takes over the concept of the real racing and destroys the purpose of buying the game. Hey how about you buy a $50 game so you can customize cars all day...If I ever wanted to do that I would go work in a garage. Nevertheless I must give props to the graphics. Though nothing compared to Gran Truismo it hit the low time standards of PS2 racers. But if you are planing to buy a great racing game with customizable features and fun racing time DONT buy this game cause thats not what your going to get. Instead settle for a 2d nintendo racer cause this game really is all cut out for playing material.
An intelligent review for once...

I used to race with other imports on the streets of LA a few years ago, and the sense of speed in this game is quite impressive. EA got everything down to the wind noise...but I know that things don't get that blurry at about 135mph...but it's close enough. The car selection is decent, but it takes a long while to get the better cars. It would also be nice to have several cars for yourself to keep in Underground mode. The customization of the cars are good, but you can't really adjust things like spring rates and gear ratios. If that were possible, then it would be like GT3, but on the streets. Being a big drift fan, the drift mode is cool, and easy if you know some basic stuff about drifting, but I find it weird that I can possibly lose a drift competition to a Front Wheel Drive car. It is not (BY FAR) a very realistic game in terms of racing and physics, but fun factor is pretty up there. However, I feel that it's missing a replay mode and a damage factor. Reading other reviews, I find it funny how badly these people can spell or speak about the game. That goes to show the intelligence of some of the people that really play video games. Anyway, seeing this game in a technical standpoint...it's okay, but in an artistic and conceptual aspect...it's truly an achievement for the designers of EA. However, as fun as the game is, if you are a true racing fan and car enthusiast...the Gran Turimo series can't be beat.
Love those RX7s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not own a need for speed undergroud game myself but I barowd one from a friend.Igot half way though the game and it's owesome. You get to tune and do about any thing to the cars. You can earn cars, piant cars, tune cars, race cars, drift cars, drag cars, sprint cars, and some other things. The whole game is based on illegal street racing. The tracks are highly detaild the cars are very detaild the parts are very detaild. You can pick from all kinds of real car parts. You can pick real cars. The game is like a fast and the firios game! When you are racing there is traffic to dodge on city streets. You earn money for things good that you do.You earn 'Style Points'for good driving moves you do.It's like real driving you have to make quik desisions.I allready loved cars but this game made me appreciate the cars with the lowed exhaust tips. The graphics for this game are awesome.I don't wont to spoil everything for.If your're buying the game you'll love it.My name's Tyler Messick and I did!

I love the NFS series, and have since i played it on the old 3DO system. NFS for playstaion has in my opinion offered solid graphics, energizing soundtracks, and the best cars that money could buy. My intetest in the series began wane though with the addition of such extreme cars like the Murcielago, and the McClaren F-1. i mean these are cars that i will most likely never afford let alone see one on the streets. With Underground that all changed, and we now get customizable cars that we see everyday. The opportunity for individual customization is high, but could have been done a little better. The folks that know all have their favorite brands of aftermarket. I myself am a Greddy man. The options are easy to perform on the cars, and a degree in Auto Shop is not required as it feels like it can be in other games like Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero.
I am happy with the graphics but would have liked to see a faster frame rate to cut down on the occasional flutter. I love the soundtrack, and its ecclectic mixture of metal, and hip-hop.
The lack of replay though is near inexcusable for such a game. I like to replay the turns to check my lines compared to AI, and who doesn't like to sit back, and replay a spectacular crash at over 100 mph??I am still shocked that a replay wasn't offered for the game. I'll let it slide if it was to make room for some of the car tweaking, but it still stings when i think about it.
The tracks are challenging, and varied while still being familiar after only a few circuit races. I really enjoy the game, and each little step i unlock feels like a big reward. I am a little confused on the Reputation meter, and am still trying to figure out to increase it to more then just x2 which is all i have been able to manage on my little custom Civic.
For the import racer at heart this game is a No-Brainer. The Nay-Sayers will cry and moan about the lack of inclusion of American Muscle, and real life physics compared to the slight arcade feel that this one posesses. To them I say Go Play Something Else!! Yes, we all know that GT4 will dominate all upon its release, but this is not GT4, and doesn't try to be. This is an upgraded version of the Tokyo Racer Zero game, and a much better version of what the Fast and the Furious game will try to capture but fail miserably. Drop it in, and be the street racer that lives inside every gamer.
Good - Certainly not a great

The first thing you will notice about this game is the graphics - they are stunning to a point of being distracting. In fact, they are a little too much for the PS2 engine, and frame rate suffers a LOT at times. The sound is pathetic - I've heard better motor sampling from a toy, but tollerable nonetheless.
If you are a fan of the NFS series, this may disappoint. There is no replay function, and the hook to the title is the appearance customization. The actual driving requirements go from ridiculously easy at the beginning of the game to somewhat entertaining to downright frustrating; the AI is such that later in the game, you have to be very lucky to win, skill has little to do with success except for knowing the track layout. Basically if you hit traffic - you lose. Period. And with the amount of neon thrown in, it's impossible to see the traffic. Also, if you drive a flawless race, there will always be a competitor right behind you (get loose on that last corner and you lose!) Whereas if you drive poorly until the last lap, you have just as much chance at winning - be sure to save that "blow yourself up" shot of nitrous!
Overall I wish I had rented the game and waited for GT4. However, if you watched Fast and Furious and liked the stickers on the cars, this title's for you. If you knew the difference between the 2JZE motor in the Supra and the familiar 2JZ, don't waste your money. Happy racing!
Dissapointing at best

Ok for all the retards that think you can add a NOS, and Turbo and all the other stuff you can "add" to your car into a Neon, OR a skyline and have them race with similar speed, you're really retarded. This game has two things going for it, tight gameplay, slick graphics. Once you get to the last few races, the expert races you'll notice that you're extremely fast car can do extremely fast flips when it hits the slightest environment article. For example you can slice your car through some stop signs and trees, and then later in the game you'll be going 170 and then wham, straight to ZERO because you hit the wrong road cone, or tree. Even better the computer racers can glance off cars and not miss a beat, whilst you graze a car and you flip uncontrollably into other invisibly cemented objects. This game is very frustrating I've destroyed a handful of controllers in the attempt to beat the whole thing. All in all this game is not as challenging as a gran turismo game but it's easy playability is stomped to death by a plague of problems that makes playing it much less fun than harnessing a true NFS game like the beautiful Hot Pursuit 2 game. but sorry kiddies in NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 you can't put crap all over your stupid civic and make it beat a skyline.
What were the designers thinking?

I was very dissapointed with this game. I think the designers could have done a much better job of making this game fun. At first the game was very fun, and I liked the story a lot. Once traffic was in the picture the game started to go down hill. During a race, when you hit a car your car flips ten times, spins around for 30 seconds, and then starts you backwards. The car's reverse takes another 45 seconds to straighten you up, and by the time you get back up to speed you're 3 minutes behind the leader. The crashes aren't the only screw up. The tracks are very hard to get around in. Too many corners sticking out that you can't see but can end up spinning out your car with the results listed up above. The opponent racers are very pushy, and really good at taking the turns perfectly. Even on easy it's extremely hard to catch up. The "catch up" feature sucks. The AI catches up real quick, but you can't catch up to them. When an AI opponent hits another car it barely affects him. I was racing and an AI opponent hit a car right in front of me and made the car fly into me. I got majorly screwed and he just kept on going to win the race. The tracks could use a lot of improvement. If you don't like trying to turn around never ending 90 degree corners, then this game isn't for you. This isn't street racing! This is "park and sewer" racing. The first tracks were really fun, but then you start driving through sewers, oriental parks, industrial yards, and docks. These tracks have unending turns that make it hard to steer around without your car spinning out and/or hitting traffic.
The two stars I give it, however, are for story and vehicle enhancement. I loved enhancing my vehicle and getting NOS and neon lights and stuff. It's expensive though. The story, I thought, was really good, and it included "movies" every once in a while.
NO COPS, and NO REPLAY. I think the designers needed to do some more work. Smooth out the corners, take out the 90 degree turns, make the AI a little less perfect, make the accidents less detrimental, and I think they would have had a perfect game. Oh well! There's always next time.
(I suggest you rent it, and try to get 5th place in the rankings before you buy the game. If you get that far, you'll really like the game.)
