I have played this game through twice and am about to play it through for the 3rd time. I saw the box one day when in the computer shop and was impressed with the graphics on the box. However not being one to buy off the shelf or being fooled by pretty graphics I downloaded the demo and had a crack at it. I have been jaded too many times by pretty games with poor gameplay (think Half Life 2). Once I started playing I couldn't really believe it at first. I have a 5.1 setup so the sound came through on all the channels, the graphics were ridicously good, it oozed atmosphere and the binoculors with the long distance mike was terrific. This is the only game where a sniper rifle actually make sense as the games draw distances are so large. Running around in the jungle is great fun and the vehicles are terrific. After playing it twice I am still learning things about this game. This game is very different from normal shooters in that the game is very open, you can room around anywhere on the island and choose any path or tactic that you like to get where you want to go. This makes for a great number of different techniques and strategies. In one bit I was very low on health and was being hunted by the enemy so I was bush bashing to try to stay alive. Eventually I got to a port but instead of driving a vehicle I found to attack a found a neat sniper position in the bush and then picked them off from long range. Top fun. The next time I went through on the Hummer firing the machine gun and the mortar causing mass destruction ... beautiful. This games is worth spending thousands of dollars on the upgrade your system, I did it was well worth it this is the pinnacle of software on my PC. I seriously hope that they bring out some expansion packs or something else that uses this game engine. This is the game of the year for me. The water, the sound, the trees and the exotic beaches all make for an engaging experience, but unlike some other pretty shooters this one has content and I cannot recommend it highly enough I only hope that Crytek can bring out some more! Prior to this game I was a half-life fan through and through, however with Half Life 2 being a dissappointment I have a new king in town. Far Cry has raised the bar and is now the one to beat.

A great game on all levels.

This is a great FPS game. It incorporates everything that I have been looking for in a FPS. I have searched for a decent FPS that includes elements of stealth for quite some time. The enemies in most FPS games just seem to know when you are in the area so you never get that chance to sneak up on them. The stealth element really lets you play the game on your terms. You can run and gun, avoid, or go in for the stealth kills.

Vast environments and vehicles are other great elements of a FPS that are in full effect in Farcry. If you can see it on your screen you can go there.

Even though the game has been out for quite some time now I still find the graphics to be the best. I recognize that this is a matter of personal taste. You may like the sci-fi themes in Half-life 2 and Doom.

This game is a steal, especially now that the price has dropped dramatically.

I will honor this game with 4 stars, because Far Cry is a ground breaking, ambitious title.

I have nothing to say about this good game that hasn't already been said, but I must warn people that if you have virtual CD software installed on your PC, this game WILL NOT RUN. I have even heard that the game will refuse to run if you have CloneCD or CD packet writing software installed. This practice is unfair of Ubi-Soft, and while Far Cry will sell well, they have already lost a lot of business from people that run emulated games legally on Linux OS installs, city LAN cafes (they use virtual CD drives to prevent CD theft), and from people whom chose to exercise their consumer rights by NOT uninstalling software just to play a game.

I'd imagine that Ubi-Soft has a tech support nightmare going on right now because of the game's inability to run on computers with even INACTIVE daemon software installed. Soon, a patch could be released to remedy this, but until then, I'd advise people to be a little hesitant when purchasing Far Cry for $49. It's a good game, but you might get screwed.

My god, this game is gorgeus! I could spend all day(and often have) oggling the beautiful water, lush jungle, white sand, and every bit of its bump-mapped glory! The gamplay was very stealth-oriented. I played the first five 'sandbox' style levels and then...

The sixth level takes place in an abandoned mine, which, in contrast to the previous levels, was very dark and cramped. But I assumed that this was only a temporary change of pace so I gave it a chance and kept playing. Level after level passed, each more of an in-your-face corridor blaster than the last, with only breif escapes into outdoor areas that were too dark to enjoy and flooded with uber-mutants. (To Ubisoft's credit the way they reveal the mutants is very cool and reminicent of a horror movie.)
Anyhoo, I got to 16 and gave up. I went to gamefaqs, got some cheats, played for twenty minutes only to suddenly emerge into the daylight paridise I had been yearning for for the last week (*sigh*). Thinking that the nightmare was finally over, I removed the cheat codes and started to like the game again. But it couldn't have a happy ending, no way. Almost immediatly it slipped back into up-close-and-gory mode for the last three levels. In short, 14 out of 20, or 70% of the levels were, to put it nicely, not what you'd expect from the demo. Ok, they sucked. In my opinion the best graphics I have ever seen(even a year later) still don't make up for poor gameplay. If you want a very intense game you might like it though.

Excellent. The best PC game I have played in years.

To sum it up:

Gorgeous.

Fun.

Challenging.

Long.

'nuff said. Buy it. At 29.99, it's a steal.

I run it on this system:

Athlon XP 2200 (1.6 Gz)

768 mb ram (PC 2100)

Ati Radeon 9600 XT 128 Mb vid card.

SB Live Value sound.

It plays just fine @ full speed on my machine, but you can tell it's pushing the limits. This game is 5 cd's worth of genius.

A rarity that actually exceeds expectations...

I'm a gaming junkie. I played this beta (got it at fileplanet.com) at first day of release expecting allot less than what I got:

Exceptional Graphics: The Far Cry engine can render a full kilometer of terrain in real time!

Insane Physics: The water is as beautiful as any I've seen in a game (very hard to render), it ebbs and flows uneven (according to resistance). Birds flutter overhead when shots are fired, plants sway in the breeze.

Great AI: More testing needs to be done, but from what I've played so far, I haven't seen one pattern flaw in their pathfinding, response, etc...

The future for this game is a bright one. I look very forward to its release.

Enjoy...

Not for the Leisure Gamer

I am a father of triplet 2 yr olds and my time is very valuable. I am also not a hardcore gamer, I enjoy getting a little further each day with the half hour or so I have for a game.

The lack of user control on saving absolutely ruins this game for me. I have completely WASTED a couple hours of my life so far repeating kills time and time again just because I get killed before a checkpoint. I just do not have that kind of time to throw away.

I am presently, and reluctantly, playing at medium to see if I can waste less of my time. If I had known of this feature (or if Half-Life 2 was not delayed) I definitely would not have purchased the game.

The games I have played in this genre always allowed me to save when I felt like I needed to. Some of the games also offered auto-saves at points it felt that a save was needed (ie checkpoint of sorts).

But why force the user to only save at checkpoints? Seems a bit silly, hardcore gamers wouldn't save anyways. Let the user choose their save preferences.

Bottom Line. If your time is valuable I would pass on this game. Too much unnecesary time is spent in repetition.

First, my system, P4 2.26, 512 ram, and a Radeon 9800 pro. At medium settings and a resolution of 1152x768, the game ran great. I finished the game and had no crashes, or slow downs. Now I must admit, at medium settings, I did not see all the really cool capabilities of the engine, but the game still looked ridiculously good. Better then anything I have seen yet.
As far as the game goes, if you like fps, this is an awsome game. If you want to nerd out and complain this game is nothing new, or to linear, or not ground breaking enough, then you can be miserable by yourself. Is it something orignial? No, its not, but so what. The plot is cliche, the whole mad scientist thing, and the indoor missions can be typically linear. But that does not detract from this being an excellent gaming experience. The weapons are very realistic, I would have liked to have the aim down the sights though (like Call of Duty), and outdoor missions give you all sorts of ways to accomplish your goal, along with several different ways to get to it. I don't think any other game yet has done that. So, enough said, if you like fps, and aren't expecting every single game to turn the world upside down, you will enjoy this one.

It is hard to beat!

This is one of the best games I have played. Well worth the money! Tons of fun, great graphics and an excellent story. A Low price. Almost as long as Half-Life 1. What more can you ask for???
