not worth the hassle

I've never had so much trouble getting a game to play. My pc more than meets the recommended requirements and it seems like it's full of bugs.

The cars are way too hard to drive. You have to use keys to turns left or right, they aren't mouse controlled. For pete's sake, let gamers quicksave whenever they want! I hate hate hate not being able to save. Who wants to get so far only to get killed and have to backtrack through gameplay--not fun! It's also a major ordeal getting cheatcodes that work. Some do, most don't. Huge disapointment. I've had it with pc games like this. Never again.

OK, for the price this game sells at now, theres no excuse NOT to buy it! I was one of the few people who was able to ignore the graphics and glitches of Far Cry on the Wii and thought it was a very fun game. So I figured I'd try the original. This game is awesome. Graphics are amazing, even today.

The only thing I didn't like... The game has this feature where if you turn the mouse really fast your character is suppose to whip his head as fast then his body follows. Ubi Soft says "this feels like lag to some people" and it does. If you don't like it (some people don't mind this) you can turn it off. Open the console (hit the ~ key) and type "cl_lazyweapon 0" with out the quotes. It has to be typed just like that with the underscore and space.

Being that it was one of the last games made on CD-ROMs, its on 5 discs. PC games are mostly made on DVD-ROMs now, this game could have fit on one disc probably. I could care less about this, just thought it was worth mentioning.

Great single player, smart AI with amazing realism in body motion and mannerisms. I caught one of the mercs smoking a cigarette!

Graphics matter. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either a liar or has a really crappy computer that won't be able to run "Far Cry." Because these are some of the best graphics I have ever seen.

You play Jack Carver, a man with a past and a penchant for Hawaiian shirts, and therefore, a likely Jimmy Buffet fan. But hen like in all games Jack's peaceful, seafaring ways are interrupted by a gang of mercenaries with lots of weaponry. The beautiful woman who hired Jack to take her to a remote island in Micronesia is missing. And his boat has sunk.

While Jack's past is revealed to him you facehuge environments, good AI, and functional stealth elements come together to highlight the game's best feature. There's never just one way to accomplish something. You can try to take the enemy head on, or wander the island in search of a hidden path. Or, you can initiate a confrontation with a couple of guards in the hopes of stealing their buggy with a mounted machine gun.

This is one of the best PC shooter games to come out in a long time. It is a long game and can be quite difficult even at the "normal" level. The graphics, sound and action are great. It also is more that just a shooter since some strategy is needed to defeat the enemies at various levels, especially the more difficult ones. Be warned: The violence is quite graphic.

The system requirements for this game are a little intimidating. I was afraid that it wouldn't run well on my system but the setup options are quite flexible so it is possible to get good results on low end systems. I have a 1.3 Mhz P4 with only 256 Mb of RAM and a 128 Mb ATI video card. I let the game set the video and sound options and it ran fine. However when I tried to set the video options for a more detailed display I ran into problems.

If you like FPS games with a little strategy, great graphics and a lot of action this is the game for you.

i've had it "up to here" with far cry's technical issues.

from what i've played of far cry, i think it's a great game and just the kind of game i like. unfortunately, i can't continue playing it because it won't let me!!!

chapter 1: i start out playing the game but i noticed the sound is having problems cutting out for a little bit. some guy online says to avoid a later patch, so i use an earlier one. everything works fine until one point where the map tells me to go to a checkpoint. i go there. it's at the end of a dock. i look around EVERYWHERE for what i'm supposed to find there, all around the beach and underwater. nowhere to be found so i can't continue the game. i uninstall it.

chapter 2: i reinstall it and install the latest patch (1.4). the sound problem still exists but it's not a big deal. i just want to have fun with this game. then i notice a strange quirk about the targetting icon.. when i aim at a person's head, it seems not to hit!!! now i play an online multiplayer FPS a lot and get a lot of headshots, but just to make sure i'm not just sucking badly, i go up to a person really close and find the same stupid problem: the bullets don't hit at all when i shoot his head or upper torso, but are fatal when i hit HIS STOMACH. good lord. i can't play a game like this. i have to stop, again, for another stupid technical problem.

this is on top of 2 other problems.. the game detected my system as "very high" spec, yet obviously this was not the case because it crashed unless i played with the graphics on the "low" setting.

other problem is, ironically, the freakin' AI. ok, let's say you play on normal difficulty like i would normally do on a game. well, the enemies are WAY TOO EASY. i stood there and literally watched as two men ran up to me and shot me over and over, missing and doing no damage. that's good AI? i don't think so. so i put it on challenging level - oops! too hard. someone kills me from long range through a window, which i doubt he could see me through. so i switch it back to normal with AI auto balance.. ahh, there we go. it's really easy at first but as you blow through the enemies, it makes them harder. then if you keep dying in the same place, it makes them easier. that's a pretty good idea. but i had to restart the game over and over to figure that out.. only to find it was aiming wrong. geez. i find it kind of strange other reviewers haven't mentioned all these technical issues with far cry. maybe if i REMOVE the patches i can get it to work. irony!

as for the multiplayer, i can't comment on it because i signed up for it but it still won't work.

update: i tried again and found out why a guy shot me through a window - because of YET ANOTHER BUG!!!!!!! that's right folks, i got everything to work right in this game except for ENEMIES SHOOTING ME THROUGH SOLID BUILDING WALLS. that's with the latest patch! how's that for buggy? also i'm still not overly impressed with the AI. i have seen amazing AI before, and this ain't it. it's decent, but i've seen better.

Takes awhile to get into it, but after awhile if you can take it mentally it's very addicting. It's also a very difficult game. Difficult is ok as long as it's fun. Almost as fun as Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2 and FEAR but the story line, the atmosphere and most of all the most amusing part the voices by the bad guys like "I'm going to shoot you in the face" or "You in the shirt!". Then the other scary parts of the game really makes you feel like your in paradise in hell. The graphics move nice, not very many glitches.

As for that fool at the bottom that said "I am playing the game. It is pretty good so far, but I am always annoyed when a game developer makes the decision that the player is not going to be allowed to save when he wants."

Please, that's one of the biggest challenges of the game. You cannot save whenever you want as you have to hit "save points" in the game. I was able to pass this game but barley as it is far from easy.

This game would make a great movie!

The game is great. It has great graphics, great sound, very fun gameplay and so many mission you will wish it to end. Playing in moderate the game difficulty is aceptable and challenging, higher than that it must be impossible to win. In this game you really get the feeling of playing in open ground giving you many options to set your strategy. You get lots of types of weapons and will be able to drive different kinds of vehicles on land, air or water. It's a good buy. My rate is 9 of 10.

I just finished playing this game all the way through, and I was very impressed with everything. My jaw became unhinged because it was always hanging from the AMAZING graphics. Everywhere I went in the game I just kept looking around so I could see all the detail. I don't do that with games. The only complaint I could have is that it all takes place on an island, or more than one. So, there are not many environments but tropical. With the power of this engine, and the detail of the maps as it is, I'm sure it would have taken way too long to program new environments. Maybe they'll have some if they release an expansion pack. I would certainly stand in line to get it.

This game was full of surprises. I was a little freaked out on some of the levels. There is just no end to the fun on this game. The great thing also is that many people are starting to put out their own MODS and maps. I'll have to try some of them.

Now go and get this game already!!!

Non-Stop Fun and Explosive Surprises

Wow! This is by far the best first person shooters to date. (Pre-Half Life2 and Doom 3 release)

I am playing the full version and am a little over half way through and just cant get enough. This game has everything you need from graphics to story.

Highs: As stated abundantly the graphics are insane! And whats great you can easily set the quality of the graphics to adapt to your machine. You can crank up the gore - very detailed! You can make the water look like your watching HDTV! Its insane.

As you get farther into the game there are a lot of surprises. The kind of ones that make you jump out of your computer chair! Lots of popping out of nowhere AI's gotta love it.

Shoot everything from pistols to rocket launchers. Drive boats, jeeps that are heavly armed, big armored rigs and even fly hang gliders to approach stealth - Its great fun.

The maps and evnviroments are insanely fun to navigate. The maps are set up that in most cases there is no one way to solve a senerio making it much more real. And the scenery in many places has you stopping just to take in the beauty.

The story line is great too. But its kind of a rehashed story from another great game ... um ... Ill let you figure that one out :)

Its worth the money. You will never regret buying this one!
