AI:

This is the only area I can find fault with the game. When it comes to combat, I prefer to take out enemies at a distance, and it seems as though enemy troops are marching straight into my crosshairs. However, the AI improves tremendously in close quarters. Mercenaries behave like real humans in tight hallways. Creepy.

Physics:

Quite simply, this game sets a new standard for physics engines, those big piles of mathematical code that determine how objects in the game world behave. Human bodies behave like bodies... barrels roll down hill like round objects, objects bounce, slide, and tumble exactly as they would in the real world. The possibilities are endless.

Graphics:

Graphically, it goes without saying that the game is gorgeous. The screenshots do it no justice, it must be played to be fully appreciated. The water is breathtaking.

Performance:

The game runs extremely smoothly with all options set to max at 1280x1024 resolution on a 2.6 ghz P4 with an ATI 9700 Pro card, 1 gig of RAM.

Overall:

Of all the games that are out for PC right now, this is the one you should pick up first.

This game is amazing if you stick to it, read the instructions and play it on the easiest level. Also you have to have a top of the top of the line video card and computer.. Don't even try it if your computer doesnt have the latest generation of graphic card and cpu, with memory of a gig or so. I have an ATI 9800XT pro... and a 3.2 gig athlon cpu.. 1 gig of ram..It runs great but there is some room for improvement. The graphics for this game are the top of the top of the line... To compare it to half life when it came out doesnt do it justice since half life was based on the quake engine.... I don't think we will see a game that renders the natural world with such detail and beauty for a long time. You feel you are in a tropical island just going arround in a boat, it is basically a vacation, only if those bad guys would stop shooting at you!!! If you have the computer power, if you like first person shooters, do not miss this game. Just remember play it on the easiest level... It is unforgiving!!! Also there is no saving in the game, but this will be fixed within the next patch.. I hope.

FarCry is far out; could not stop playing....

This is the first PC game that really demonstrates the power of PC's today. Having been a console gamer for the last 15 years I made the jump to PC games last year after seeing games like Homeworld 2,UT 2003 and Half Life, but Farcry just blows them away.

Pros:

1.Great graphics,
2.Stunning environment (pacific islands and beaches),
3.Great AI for the bad guys (change their behavoir each time a little),
4.Great humvees, trucks and boats to drive while shooting,
5.Scary huge mean bad guys that make you want to run even when you have played the level time and time again to complete it.
6.Great weapons with secondary fire modes that lets you blow up things.

Cons:
1.The levels get ridiculously hard towards the end (no skill just try over and over until you get lucky),
2.Saving is automatic and seldom when it should happen (although there is a cheat to save the game when you want.)
3.A couple of minor bugs where the bad guys get stuck and will not die.

This is the first game that I go back to just to walk around the islands or down the river; just stunning realistic reproduction of south pacific islands.

Get this one you will not be sorry.

A classic in my book!

One of my most memorable moments from graduate school in the early 90's was sitting in the computer lab after hours playing Castle Wolfenstein with my fellow grad students. You'd run your character around a corner, blow some other character's head off, and immediately hear a real person somewhere across the room curse out loud at no one in particular, because no one knew who they were shooting at, or who was shooting at them. It was primitive by today's standards, but the multiplayer aspect was unlike anything I'd ever experienced at that time, and I new the world was in for a revolution in computer gaming.

However, after playing Wolfenstein for a few weeks, I was bored enough by the repetitive nature of the first person shooter (FPS) genre to stay away from it for a decade. A few years ago I tried Quake III because of the fabulous reviews, but that took less than one day to bore me, and I fully expected to stay away from FPS's forever.

So it was with some hesitation that I purchased Far Cry in November 2005. The main reason I bought it was for the graphics. I just liked the idea of being able to roam around beautiful South Pacific islands, since I doubt I'll get to do that in real life anytime soon. If the game itself proved even remotely interesting, then so much the better.

Imagine my surprise then, when I found myself completely immersed in this game from the very beginning. The grahpics were extraordinary, the gameplay was smooth, the controls were easy to learn, and the AI offered a fair challenge, such that I really felt like I was living the story. That's what a good film should do, and that's what a good role-playing or strategy game should do. I didn't even realize I was playing a first person shooter until about midway through. And by then I didn't care. Far Cry is an amazing game!

The game is based on a sci-fi storyline in which you learn that a mad doctor with a seemingly endless supply of mindless henchmen (mercenaries) has hatched a plot that threatens humanity. It's a stale formula, yes, but the story in Far Cry is actually quite unique and riveting.

Like Kings Quest, Star Control, and the Command & Conquer series, Far Cry has established itself as a classic game that I will never forget. Enough has been said about details of the story and gameplay in other reviews. Suffice it to say that I recommend this game without hesitation--especially at the discount prices available now (I vowed long ago never to pay more than 20 bucks for a game again, even if I must wait until they are three years old!)

Be aware that there is no Save Game function, but the game saves itself using "checkpoints" at logical breaks in the storyline. This works well for the most part, but sometimes it requires you to go through the same long scenario many times before you finally reach the next checkpoint. On the bright side, you are free to do things differently each time, and you'll get different reactions from the mercenaries when you do. For example, I attacked one camp unsuccessfully about 10 times before accomplishing my goal, and I had to start quite a ways away from the camp each time. So I tried reaching the camp from different directions to spice it up, and eventually found best way to get the job done. The freedom to do things differently made it much less tedious to essentially do the same thing 10 times.

One thing that is missing is a greater abundance of nature sounds on the islands. In a lush tropical jungle like this, one would expect to hear all manner of birds, waves crashing, waterfalls pouring, wind howling, etc. There is some of that (footsteps are particularly good when walking through the foilage). But the immersion effect would have been even greater if the jungle sounds were as complete as the graphics or the sounds of machinery. The machinery sounds (vehicles, weapons, generators, etc.) are excellent.

The voices are well done when relating to the storyline (although the acting is pretty bad sometimes), but the mercenaries voices while hunting you down just repeat the same limited set of moronic warrior cliches, like "I'm gonna open up a can of whoopass on you!" Perhaps this is part of a larger joke, however, because if you look around you'll see copies of "Redneck Today" and "Fully Loaded" magazines laying around various tents.

Be sure to use the binoculars to zoom in on the mercenaries, as you'll find the detail and movement quite entertaining. For example, you can see mercs just standing around smoking cigarettes and chatting with each other through the binoculars. Using binoculars, you can also hear what they are saying, although their mouths don't really move when they are speaking.

The deus ex machina of the game is a mysterious benefactor named Harlan Doyle, who seems to know every move you make, and is able to suggest every move you should make. Perhaps it's because I played this game in 2005, but I found Doyle a hilarious character because he sounds exactly like the similar character Spottswoode in Trey Parker and Matt Stone's film, "Team America" (except that Doyle never asks you to unzip his pants!).

The islands really are rendered beautifully. So in addition to fantastic gameplay I got what I came for in the first place--an opportunity to walk through paradise without traveling to the South Pacific. But once you get into it, like the game warns, "Forget paradise, this is hell!"

I haven't attempted the multiplayer mode because I only have a modem connection, but everything else in this game works wonderfully, so I have no reason to believe multiplayer isn't just as smooth.

One last thing: The game requires that CD #1 is in the drive before you can play. I've said it before and I'll say it again: software publishers should never punish their own paying customers, especially when new games retail at 50 bucks. They should locate pirates and punish them in the legal system instead, and if they don't want to go through that much effort, piracy isn't that important to them in the first place. STOP PUNISHING PAYING CUSTOMERS!

I heard a lot of good things about this game. Bought it
and the video is so corrupted I can't play it. Went round and
round with Ubisoft who sent me a lot of boilerplate "help" like
"update your video card driver" and "download the latest patch".
Thank you Captain Obvious!! I have wasted hours trying to solve
this problem. From checking out Far Cry sites, the little
secret seems to be be this game won't run on certain hardware/
software combos. I'm running an AMD 64/3500+ 0n an A8V Mobo w/
a Gigabyte X800Xt Vid card. Why do Half Life2, MOH Pacific
Assault, BF1942, etc work great and not FC??? The customer
service is utterly useless. Software guys say it's a hardware
prob and vice versa. NOBODY should have to work this hard to get
a game to run. I gave up finally and I can't get my money back.
Buyer Beware! Ubi will never get another nickel from me!!!!!!!!

Downloaded the demo the other day, and I've beaten it half a dozen times. It doesn't get old because of the best thing about this game; the freedom. Totally non-linear, which is a new thing to level based first person shooters.

People have been complaining about needing ram, and how it won't work on Nvidias. THEY ARE HIGH. My system is total crap, (1600+ AMD, 512 mb 266 mhz ram, and 128 mb geforce fx 5200) and it ran great! If you're having trouble running it smoothly, just turn down some of the bells and whistles, and lower the resolution. Don't worry; even with every texture on 'low' and the resolution at '640x480' the game still looks REALLY good.

The gameplay is great. The AI doesn't seem particularly special, but I haven't had any trouble. People used to games like 'Counter-Strike' will be at home with this game, for a number of reasons:

Desert Eagle? M4a1? P90 smg? These guns not only appear in here, but the models are very similair to that of Counter-Strike. Sometimes the only way you can tell which game you're playing is by the gorgeous graphics. Even the sniper rifle looks like an AWP.

The crosshair. The crosshair looks, and acts, like Counter-Strikes crosshair; it expands as you shoot, making your shots less acurate the longer you hold down the mouse. As you run, it expands, when you crouch, it contracts. There are even color pointers; it turns red when you mouse over an enemy, and when you are unable to fire, it goes a dull brown.

The only game I was going to buy this month was CS: Condition Zero, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy this game now. Unfortunately the demo doesn't have multiplayer support, and I anxiously await how the multiplayer turns out, as it will make or break the game.

Even if ubi blows the multiplayer, the single player is REALLY fun. Mixing nice amounts of stealth and blasting, this game offer great gameplay, familiar weapons, and gorgeous graphics.

It seems as though you can only save at checkpoints, which is a minor drawback, but it still works fine.

An amazing game!!!

Just got the full version yesterday and I must say that this is one of the most visually stunning games out. Other people's complaints about the AI are solely based on having played the demo so ignore them. The full version offers 6 levels of difficulty. The action and stealth opportunities in this game are endless and open ended tactics can be used. Well worthy of a purchase.

"Far" and away the best shooter in years...

"Far Cry" is easily the best shooter that's been released since "Halo" hit the Xbox in 2001, and it packs one of the most impressive engines ever to grace a first person shooter. Recalling both "Half-Life" and the aforementioned "Halo," "Far Cry" still manages to find a place all to itself.

The game casts you as Carver, an ex-military type who now spends his time in the tropics sailing people around on a rickety boat. As luck would have it, he's met by a freelance reporter named Valerie who wants to take pictures of a high tech island facility - but she's more than she seems to be, and the facility, apart from being guarded by an army of mercenaries, is the home of some genetic research that's gone terribly wrong. Carver gets hopelessly entangled in this business despite his (constant) protests, and has no choice but to fight his way off the island. Regrettably, despite the potential coolness of the storyline and characters, the plot is perhaps the weakest element of "Far Cry." The story only makes so much sense if you haven't familiarized yourself with the tidbits in the instruction manual, and there aren't any real surprises.

Despite this shortcoming, "Far Cry" plays like nothing else. The Crytek engine is nothing short of staggering - you can see miles around you in every direction with little to no visible scenery "pop in," and all of this at a surprisingly slick frame rate! Lush jungles, ancient ruins, and high tech bunkers are all rendered exceedingly well, and they're full of armed thugs and mutant monstrosities just itching to tear you a new one... and they will if you think you can just "run and gun." Enemy artificial intelligence is certainly imperfect, but sometimes utilizes very believable tactics to flush you out, flank you, or otherwise get the drop on you. The game's less human adversaries tend to take a more direct approach (because they can), but they're suitably menacing, and sometimes even downright scary.

Given that "Far Cry" is a shooter, it's worth noting that the actual shooting is intensely gratifying. Rag doll physics send your foes flipping and collapsing in mostly plausible ways, and your weapons selection is certainly a worthy one. You are limited in how many weapons you can actually carry around at any given time (think "Halo"), but this only adds to the game's strategic depth. You can also pilot vehicles in the game (again, think "Halo"), and they're not only helpful for getting you from point A to point B in record time - some of them have mounted guns that pack a wallop. These vehicles are well implemented (all except the wasted hand glider) and easy to master, and further add to the meat of this already remarkable game.

There are a few problems in paradise, though. Collision detection can be spotty sometimes - shoot a merc in the head and he may drop immediately, or he may keep coming until you shoot him several more times. Also, the boxed version of the game does not employ a quick save feature, and instead forces you to play by "checkpoints." A PC game should never limit you in this fashion, particularly when some of the game's checkpoints are unevenly spaced. Still, it's not a serious issue, and it should be fixed in an upcoming patch. The game's finale, which fails to rise to the occasion, is a harder problem to address, but it's not a deal breaker either. Finally, I would have liked to encounter more enemy types in the game - similar mercs and mutants await you at pretty much every turn, and midway through the game you'll have encountered pretty much all of them.

In the end, "Far Cry" is still an awesome game - the best one released in 2004, and an easy contender for "Game of the Year," or, at the very least, "Best FPS." The heavyweights such as "Doom III" and "Half-Life 2" have their work cut out for them, because "Far Cry" is not much of a slouch in any department. Good luck, guys.

Final Score: A- (5 stars on a curve)

Watch out Half-Life2 and Doom3!

UPDATED REVIEW

With all the big name titles and sequels coming out this year, it would seem hard for any other game to make its mark this year. Well, all I can say is Far Cry has done that and more.

Far Cry game raises the bar for graphics, AI, and open ended play. I read some initial reviews that were mixed, but all I can say is this game is fun.

You can play the game however you want. You are very rarely channelized into going down one corridor or to one unlocked door like some many other games. I love the ability to pick your own avenue of attack.

The graphics are amazing and with playable frame rates on most computers. The water effects and vegetation are the best I have seen to date. At least on my comp. You won't need a $400 graphics card to get 50+ fps compared to some of the other recent action games.

The sound and music keep you in the mood throughout the game. This is something that is often overlooked.

The AI is some of the best I have seen, ever. If you alert the enemy, they keep coming and coming until they find you, you kill them all, or they kill you. This adds a whole level of excitement to the game.

The difficulty levels really make a difference, so adjust the game to your skill level and go wild.

I have seen the demo's for HL2 and Doom3, and I think Far Cry is going to be this years sleeper for Game of the Year. Similar to how Half-Life did it 6 years ago. I can just imagine how some Mods are going to be for this game.

The storyline is decent and sets up for sequels in the coming years. It could have been a little deeper, and the game could have been a little longer but it was already on 5 CD's, so I guess they had to limit it somehow.

BOTTOM LINE:
This game is worth every penny! So if you like First Person Shooters and Action games, this is a definite buy.

If you are unsure, just download the Demo and check it out. Just remember the real game looks better and plays smoother than the demo.

//// UPDATE ////
Also, I have seen alot of complaints about the save system. Well, if you don't like the checkpoints, just manually save your games like this:

To save a game anywhere, open the console (press ~) and type "\save_game gamename" (without quotes) where the gamename can be any name or number you like. For example:

\Save_game Quicksave

Enjoy!

I recently bought FarCry from eBay, and let me tell you: This game is bad ass. Let me break this down...

1. The graphics are positively beautiful.
2. The AI is very realistic
4. The polymapping works great
5. The physics are well done

I just wish they could have made boxes splinter, like HL2 will. Other than that, it's a great game. Being able to render the graphics to look cartoonish is fun, too.

My review scores:
--Graphics: 10 - The water is superb, as is the people and everything else
--Sounds:: Voices: 9 - Sometimes, the voices sound a little strained.
Sound Effects: 10 - Very Realistic
Music: 10 - Changes to fit with the current events
Overall Sounds: 9.6
--Map Layout: 10 - CryTech did a very good job mapping out the islands. The islands are totally immersive.
--Playability: 9 - Some parts are dificult and require incredible amounts of stealth.
--------------------------------
Overall: 9.65

I'd reccomend this game to anyone who enjoys FPS games, but only if you have a high-end system, like me, to enojoy FarCry the way it was meant to be played.
