Great FPS

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

This is a great game in the spirit of what FPS games should be. The graphics are awesome and the gameplay is incredible. Enemy AI is pretty good, you can actually sneak around and snipe them but be careful because if they see you they will run at you with guns blazing. Far Cry is in my list of top games ever, along with Deus Ex, Half-Life, and Age of Empires 2. Even on a lower end video card this game runs great. I highly recommend it, especially for the really low price.

Playable Demo is Available

A playable demo of FarCry is now available for download - see www.farcry-thegame.com. Check it out for yourself!!! It is big (500 megs), but well worth the effort.

The touted AI, while not perfect, is better than any other game on the market. You will feel the pressure as a horde of mercenaries chase you down. Maybe even panic a little, because they will intelligently cut off your escape routes. The Rambo approach doesn't work well here. You need to be smarter.

The graphics is also top-notch. The lush island is filled with tropical vegetation, calm water, and blue blue sky. If it weren't for the mercenaries trying to kill me, I'd explore the island to enjoy its Hawaiian sceneries. You simply have to see it!!!

Back to the AI (artificial intelligence) of the game, it makes the game non-linear so you can replay the demo with different approaches. The possibility is almost endless. FarCry's AI captures this aspect of 'realism', which greatly extends the game's re-playability.

I wish the final game will come with "cooperative" mode, so my friends and I could play the game plot together.

I love Far Cry. It's a great game, but I would recomend having a nice system.. I hate it when games get bad reviews because they don't play good on bad systems. These new games require a lot of power. GET MORE RAM !!!!!!!

My System
GA -7NNXP
AMD 2800+
2GB DDR 400 RAM
ATI RADEON 9700+
22in LCD

This game is perfect

I have noticed that some other people have given Far Cry low scores for some reasons, and after playing through the whole game I have to say that the other reviewers should actually PLAY the game before reviewing low.

1: The game doesn't work! I have a 2.4 ghz processor blah blah..

If you want to play the new modern games that are leading the way in technology, you need to have a good computer, not just a computer that can play most of today's games decently. If you claim that you have a very good system and the game won't run, you're a liar.

2: The game is too hard!/The controls are bad!

Difficulty isn't a game flaw, that just means that you can't take a challenge, thus points should not be taken off. The controls are standard FPS controls and they're customizable, so no one has any right to complain about that.

3: The AI is terrible!

This is the one that's disturbing me. The AI is terrible on EASY MODE. If you bring the difficulty to Normal, Hard or Realistic, the AI is the most real acting AI ever seen in a game.

In conclusion, Far Cry is simply an amazing game. I have played the Doom III alpha which was on display at E3 and I believe that Far Cry will even beat out Doom III and Half-Life 2.

Excellent Game that Loses Steam overall

Far Cry is an excellent shooter (in the vein of Splinter Cell, not PainKiller) that is a interesting dichotomy of stories.

First, the graphics, physics engine and AI are all first rate. I believe, however, at least for the 1.1 patch version, that it's highly tilted to ATI cards (patch 1.2, if ever released (again) should rectify that for NVidia). Additionally, as other reviews have stated, you'll want to insure that you have adequatee system specs. Of these, I believe you'll want to have at least 128mb of Video Ram and 1gigabyte of System Ram-- especially if you have slower CPUs.

Second, as, again, alluded too elsewhere, the cut-scenes go from bad to worse. Given the tremendous nature of the overall gameplay experience (with a few caveats listed below), how the dialogue and delivery of the cut-scenes could slip (to their near-atrocious level) is shocking. This is compounded by the fact that the # of cut-scenes increase as the end of the game nears while, simultaneously, the dialogue declines. A truly strange and inverted relationship.

Third, the game has an interesting save system. While Far Cry does not have a quick save system, I don't believe this to be, in general, a fatal flaw. One need look no further than Pain Killer to see well done checkpoint system (albeit with optional quick saves). Far Cry, however, suffers from two flaws in their save system:

(a) it's objective driven. Given that the game is highly (tremendously) non-linear, objectives may be 20min apart, or literally (in my experience), 43 seconds apart. That disparity is obviously flawed.
(b) the game, even at the easiest (or normal) levels is HARD. To point, there are 20 missions in the game-- providing hour upon hour of gameplay. However, the last 1.5 missions are (near) deal breakers. The missions are amazingly difficult, highly linear and suffer from extreme distance between checkpoints. I was so discouraged by these final (~) two levels, that it truly knocked my review from a "*****" to a "***" level.

Nonetheless, the game is enjoyable. Just, when the time comes, at the end, scour the internet for ways to get through to the end.

I agree with the previous reviewer on this point. It completely ruined the experience for me...there's no excuse for not allowing you to save when and where you want.

Finally...something NEW!!!!

OK...this is definitely been there, done that but I was very happy about 3 things. I won't get into more than these 3 because the other positive reviews have said it all.

1 - I AM OUTSIDE!!! Thank the gods of gaming! I am so sick of playing in dungeons, burned out space stations. Also if I have to kill one more Nazi or alien in a game, I am going to go kill some programmers myself! The outside world of FARCRY is awesome. I felt like playing in the water and exploring everything. Nice, bright, tropical, birds, water, sunshine, sand, boats to drive, jeeps to wreck. It is all here finally!

2 - The AI is awesome. The AI is also very stupid at times. Not a good as UT 2004...not even close but atleast realistic. Some humans would be busy looking in other directions, talking, fixing things. This makes it very realistic. Stir them up and they will swarm you like yellow jackets would! Woo Hoo!!!!

3 - Finally, I was glad to see a good first shooter with a fun and somewhat creative selection of weapons. Silenced guns, grenade launchers, rifles...the whole enchilada! I was disappointed that the tear gas grenades basically did nothing to stop the enemies though. Oh well.

In summation let me quote Homer Simpson - Mmmmmmmm FARCRY..............

"Far Cry" from boring FPS's!

I was debating whether to write another evaluation because I'm sure you've already heard a lot from the other helpful reviewers. But, I decided that it may be helpful for you to explicitly see what the pro's and con's are of this game. To help put my review in context, please consider that I have been gaming for several years now (first-person shooters are usually my favorite), although I wouldn't quite call myself an expert. Now, onto the review...

Pro's
-----

1) Of course I will have to re-iterate that the graphics are phenomenal... nothing short of breathtaking. I have never been so impressed by the graphics (notably the outside terrain and the stunningly realistic and gorgeous bodies of water) since Soldier of Fortune 2. I have yet to come across any scene in the game that has been degraded enough in graphics quality to resemble the best-looking games today. This is a game where you get to see the beauty of the graphics in its entirety, not hidden in shadows like much of Doom 3 (whose graphics, in my opinion, are not even as impressive). These graphics come at a price, of course. I had trouble running this on a Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz, 64 meg video card, 512 meg RAM; the graphics at "low" quality caused the frame rate to be unbearable (maybe 10 - 20 fps). Now I have an Athlon FX-55 2.6 Ghz processor, 256 meg GeForce 6800 Ultra, 2 GB RAM and I get about 70 FPS with all the settings turned up (at 1280 x 1024).

Note: You can measure your frame rate by accessing the console by pressing the tilda (~) when in the game. Then type, "\r_displayinfo 1" (without the quotes of course) to enable the frame-rate information. Enter the same command, but replace the "1" with a "0" to disable this neat feature.

2) The audio/soundtrack is excellent (even better with EAX enabled). The audio will seamlessly change to a more rapid/tense tune as soon as enemies detect your presence; this is a very helpful warning if you are not constantly monitoring your visual indicators. The music is very appropriate to the setting.

3) The AI is superb. You are confronted with a broad range of realistic enemies that are deft, life-like, and tactful. I am somewhat disappointed that Crytek had to incorporate mutants and implausible monsters into the otherwise feasible game, but they do add to the intensity of the gaming experience.

4) You are entitled to the freedom of exploration. The islands are yours for the taking. Go where you want, see what you want, do what you want. Whether you're on a boat, Humvee, ATV, hang-glider or taking a dip in the incredibly beautiful seas, it's up to you to stage your next showdown.

5) The game has a good plot. The story is reasonable and plausible.

6) Finally, as implied in my other comments, the game is, for the most part, very realistic. If you take a big hit, or happen to be too close to a nearby grenade, you'll feel - and momentarily hear - the difference as you lose major health, and, for a few seconds, your hearing.

Cons
-----

1) The game is rather difficult at times. You do have a few technological innovations to help you combat your enemies (you will learn to love your binoculars and CryVision, which will help you identify your next victims), but even so, the game is tough. Out of the four difficulty levels, I've only played the second easiest, but the game can still get tedious. Yes, Far Cry is designed to auto-save at certain checkpoints, which means you will have to replay a bit of the action (I've never been very fond of this method, by the way). Replaying five minutes of action to defeat the troublesome opposition near the end of the checkpoint segment did get a little annoying at times, but you usually have about 5 - 8 checkpoints on each of the 20 levels so it's not too bad. I did see, however, from the CryTek website that if you open the command prompt by pressing tilda (~), you can type "\save_game 1" (without the quotes of course) and it will save the game at that point, with "1" being the save game slot/name. I have not used this, but this may be an option for you if you are getting sick of re-playing the same scenes over and over.

2) The more difficult AI can be nearly impossible to kill. This is the one flaw of the game's realism. The mutant AI are so huge and durable that you will need to charge them with a shotgun and shoot them 7-8 times *in the head.* I find it very unbelievable that a living creature would require such damage to die. This parallels a scene where you have to shoot a helicopter with a rocket launcher about 8 times just to make it fly away.

Overall
-------

Far Cry is a very fun game that will give you hours of re-playability (hopefully not just the scenes that give you the most trouble, but when you decide to play the game over in its entirety). I would suggest installing all the patches (I believe the version 1.31-1.32 patch came out on June 21, 2005). Also, you can download appproximately a 1 GB patch that will essentially convert this to a 64-bit version and allow you to take advantage of a 64-bit operating system, provided that you are using a 64-bit processor (I will be testing this shortly; I heard that this will enhance the detail and provide a bit more terrain to cover).

If your system can handle the graphics, and you are into FPS's, then you are in for a (good) surprise. I would suggest purchasing Far Cry even if it were selling for $50, so Amazon.com's price only makes it too easy for me to recommend. Knock yourselves out!

I've been waiting for another "half-life" experience for years, and I've finally found it. While the story-line is not as deep, there is something about this beauty that just sucks you in. The graphics and sound are unprecedented. The physics is unprecedented. The dialog? Slightly corny. The gameplay? That's up to you. If you prefer a blitzkrieg style, you can do that, given powerful weapons and fast vehicles. Or, you can play a Sam Fisher-type of role, stealthy and slower paced (my preference). Either way, you won't be sorry with this game.

Without a doubt the best game I've ever played.

There are not enough superlatives to describe how incredible this game is. The graphics are unreal - you feel like you are really in the jungles of Central America with the beautiful beaches and crystal clear turquoise water. In the daytime you hear the cicadas and at night the crickets. It's your world to explore. There is nowhere you cannot go - that is what sets this apart from other games. You see a palm tree covered island out at sea - you can go ahead and swim out to it. Your enemies in this game are tough and there are parts which seem almost impossible until you finally get past them. The story is even great and there are new developments around every corner. From start to end this game was captivating. I finally got through to the end and now I'm starting again at the more difficult setting. As for a rating I give this a solid 10/10. My only single criticism is that there are a few parts that are just too difficult (even on the easiest setting) - it gets really frustrating when you have to repeat the same sequence over 25 times to finally get past to the next checkpoint, but when you do, it makes it that much sweeter.

As for the reviewer here that complained about too much indoor play at the higher levels - I've got to say, I'm not sure what game that person was playing. This game is played 90+% outdoors - up to and including the last level (in fact at one of the later levels you are island hopping by raft and patrol boats stollen from the enemies and then climbing mountains and hang-gliding down over beaches).

I really hope there is a sequel in the works.
