I am only on level 6, but I will give some ipressions.
Graphics/Sound 9/10 Of course the "tropical island" environment helps. The graphics are very well done. Sound is solid.
Story/Characterization 6/10 Seen it all before. Nothing really original here.
Playability: 3/10 Issues with my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro card almost bring to the game to a halt.
Comments: The most intense part of the game is to see if I can make it to the next save point before the game freezes up. Today's play resulted in 11 freezes within a 80 minute period resulting in total reboots of the computer. I believe this is an unresolved issue with the ATI Radeon 9700 graphics card. Driver update and roll backs have not helped.
At this point, the game is almost completely unplayable. I have gone to the Far Cry official forum and there appears to be absolutely no resolve with this issue. I think I will stop at this point and wait for some type of patch or driver update that will address this.
This problem appears to affect many users and it's quite a shame that it is not being quickly resolved.
Overall Score 6/10

It's been a while since I've played a 1st person shoot-em up and I've read the reviews on this game, heard that it was pretty good, made the wrong, decision and purchased it.
I think this game is terrible. If you haven't played a shoot-em-up in a while and decide to do so I highly recommend that you do not choose this game.
Here's why:
1. Handling: You use the mouse to look; w,s forward - backward: a,d left - right. Which seems alright but x is right below the s and x is used to switch from semi-automatic to automatic and this can get seriously aggravating in the heat of the fight. That is not to mention c to crouch, v prone and a bunch of other keys which for an unseasoned shoot-em-upper can be thouroughly annoying. Driving a vehicle is a complete joke - you have to reload the autosave countless times just to learn how to drive the vehicle.
2. Difficulty: Once again I'm not a seasoned shoot-em-up gamer and neither am I fan of the PC version of Splinter Cell - too many keys to do too little. This game is hard. You're thrown right into it from the start(give or take about two minutes). If you're anything like me you'll spend more time reloading the auto-saves then playing the game. It ruins the flow.
3. Dialogue and music: The dialogue and the music get extremely tedious and after a while bothersome. "Did you hear something?" is alright the first time, but after 100 times in the first 20 minutes of game time you want to unload a full load of ammo on the guy who did the voice-over.
On the positive side the game graphically is beautiful.
Maybe I'm just impatient. Maybe I should take Far Cry classes. I've only spent about 3-4 hours playing the game and haven't got very far. But my leisure time is too important too spend reloading a map so I can learn the gameplay.

PLEASE NOTE: This is from the Demo, not the full version of the game.
Myself and a number of friends downloaded this game. We all came to the same conclusions independent of each other (7 people - 2 game designers, 2 avid players, 3 average players)
1. you need a high end machine to run the game, but it is worth it.
2. Maps and scenery and ambiance. Wonderful well done.
3. The AI was total crap. Predictable, non-responsive, and generally reminded us of much older games. It's easy to find spots the AI is blind to. They also snap back to patterns. You can have a firefight just a little bit away from the island, and they ignore it (less then 150m or so). You can drop a badguy in some ways so the others ignore his death, even walking over the body. We found some other AI predictabilities, which got worse as the game progressed. You just find the patterns, pick off the badguys, and move on.
It was heartbreaking that such a pretty game had such bad gameplay.
Kind of boring honestly.

When I first started playing Far Cry, I was really excited. I had just finished playing Half-Life 2 and was ready for another good FPS. Unfortunately Far Cry didn't really meet my expecations.
The graphics certainly don't disappoint. Even now, 2 years later, they still look good. The outdoor environments are lush, the water is realistic looking and lifelike, and the draw distance is very impressive. And to boot it runs very well on mid-range systems and seems very well optimized, unlike some newer games (*cough* Oblivion).
The problem is the gameplay and the story, or rather lack thereof. The plot is tenous at best. You start out shipwrecked on an island in a bunker underground where you find a cellphone that some stranger calls you on. Next thing you know you're killing bad guys for no apparent reason. 10 hours into the game you're still killing bad guys for no apparent reason. The missions involve basically the same thing over and over: move through an outdoor area where you kill some bad guys, then move through an indoor area and sabotage something / steal something. And you don't even get much freedom in how to play the missions: I tried at first to play the game like it was Splinter Cell, stalking through the jungles, but it's virtually impossible because the enemies detect you far too easily. Pretty much your only choice is to go in guns blazing every time, which is very disappointing because it destroys any strategy elements that the game otherwise would have had. The fact that one jungle tends to look like every other jungle makes the monotony worse. Once you've seen one you've seen em all. Basically, after the initial novelty of the outdoor jungle environments wears off, honestly there isn't a lot left to play for, in my opinion.
In summary, the game looks good, but is somewhat superfical. I suppose if it were a movie it would be a mindless summer blockbuster. If you enjoy those sort of movies you'll probably enjoy Far Cry. If you're more of the type that tends to enjoy FPSes with more interesting storylines and characters then do yourself a favor and play Half-Life 2 if you haven't already...
I don't know..., very very beautiful and very heavy!!!

Boring, boring, BORING! The graphics are good -- there are endless amounts of pretty beach areas and islands to explore. But so what? There is nothing on them! No pick ups, no hidden areas, nothing.
You play Jack Carver a former soldier who's trying to rescue a damsel in distress on an island where a mad scientist is turning the place into an Island of Dr. Moreau type joint. Which might have been an interesting if not very original plot -- but in this game it is just lame. The monsters you run across can be TOTALLY out of range and with a swipe of their claws they can kill you. Huh? A creature is ACROSS the room and he can still hit you with his hand? Lame.
Plus your character is a total weakling who dies at the drop of a hat. Give me Gordon Freeman of Half-Life anyday -- all this constant and easy dying in Far Cry and there are very few sets of body armor and medical health kits in the game. Plus there is no quick save feature so you have to go back and repeat the same areas AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. This isn't challenging, this is totally boring and frustrating. What were these programmers thinking? The character of Jack Carver gets hurt by just falling a tiny distance and he howls in pain. I want to play a TOUGH badass character in a video game. Not some sissy. If the character is tough enough to be a one man army he should be tough enough to not get killed so easily. The programmers thought they were going for realism -- but it's just lame and annoying. Think Turok: Dinosaur Hunter -- a true video game badass.
And you can throw grenades at dead bodies and they don't blow apart. Why not? This is a violent M rated game and you can't do something as simple as that? Also, forget about sneaking up on anyone -- the guards can see through doors apparently. You can't sneak by anyone in most parts of the game.
The game got dull real fast, the levels are pretty much all the same, just indoor levels and beaches, and that's it. It needed more variety and a tougher character and a quick save feature. All in all, nice scenery, good graphics, but dull game play. Even activating the cheats was a major chore. This game should have worked but it didn't.

the game is fun and the price is great. but installing drivers on the users computer is poor judgement by ubisoft. i cannot return it as it has been opened. there is nothing in the EULA to warn of this. this DRM-crudware Crashed my Computer and took out my printer Drivers and DVD Driver This is all the reason i will never purchase from ubisoft again. which is sad, because the game itself is alright. these sort of practices should not be tolerated by consumers. be upfront with your consumers ubisoft!
So much fun

I absolutely love this game. This game ranks up there with Half-Life2, Doom3, and World of Warcraft for me. Its just great. Most of the games today are trying to make them dark and really scary and blah blah. This game is intense, but its not retarded. Its all damn fun. I find my heart goin real fast when I know im coming to a good part. this game is just damn good. i suggest you buy it ASAP.
pros -
great graphics
good gameplay
not too hard, not too easy
good physics
well made
cons -
some minor glitches
a couple annoying ass levels
i suggest you get it if you like FPS'. great game, one of the best.

i played the demo, it was K; graphics are amazoning, ai is pretty sly, ragdoll physics is fun, and the vehicles are pretty cool. The one thing that will ruing the game if they don't fix is the saving game function; its horrible, i mean i walk up the hill get all these sweet guns, I want the save my game... but how? i goto menu no save game function, i goto controls to see if quicksave is there... nope. after about an hour of being frustrated i started to play some more, it automatically saves the game, but doesn't let me save. I happend to get extremely freaking angry about this when i got up the mountain/hill thing, and an enemy was run infront of me shooting at me. I had 14 health, and no ammo. I die, save game reloads, i die, etc. If this is not fixed in the final, the single player portion will literally be destroyed.
I'm thinking maybe it wass a feature just not included in the demo... but why would they not include something like that.

First of all, if you're having problems it's because you're running with an NVidia Card. I will never own one of those pathetic cards. I've been using an ATI Radeon 9700Pro for a little over a year now and the release of this demo was the first time I've even had to update my drivers. I have had no trouble running this mouth watering demo. No lockups period. And my processor is half what the other guy's is, Athlon XP 2000. There is simply no excuse, dump NVidia and reap the rewards. It may say "the way it's meant to be played" but it's definitely not in most cases.
With any demo, we know that this is just giving us a taste of the game, but what a taste this is! The island setting is so visually stunning, it almost seems a shame to have to play the game. I had a desire to just roam the beach and watch the tide come in. The bright colors practically put you in the scenary unlike any other game setting you've seen. Weapons respond realistically as do the AI which becomes evident all too quickly when you're being flanked. Someone put it perfectly when they said that going RAMBO in this game won't work at all. You have to survey and think it through before you act out your will. I find that if you use the jungle exactly the way the AI does, you're going to be king of said jungle. I've actually watched an enemy walk backwards until he stumbled over me. I shot him in the back before he could call for help. It's so real it's scarey sometimes. Here's another neat trick: While the enemy is flanking you, walk straight through them and come up behind them. Give em a surprise they'll even remember when you restart the game.
The environment is huge. No loading, no waiting, great score, just nonstop adrenaline rush. It's like Die Hard in paradise. Bring it on!
