One of the Best FPS Games Ever!

It's not often that a First Person Shooter grabs the attention of so many while excelling in nearly every area. Far Cry could be one of the best looking games, with the best AI in a FPS Ever to come along. Add to that the real life physics engine that lets object react as in the real world. This Game while not doing anything really new as far as Shooters, will amaze you in the details and the envirements that bring a tropical island to life. If anyone is wondering how close we got the photorealistic games, then Far cry has got to be a contender. The enemies will be tough and you must really think and not just run and gun.
If you never played a first person shooter, I suggest you give this one a try.

A beautiful and immersive FPS Paradise...

It was that time of year again - you know, the one where the stores bring out all the special merchandise about 3 or 4 months before the actual event? Ok, so that's pretty vague considering stores do that for every holiday, including Pass Over, Deepawali and the like...so, it was Christmas and I was fresh out of things to kill and was totally unsure of what to get for the holidays to quench my bloodlust. Luckily my older brother had come down for a decent spell and he told me about "Far Cry." Now my older brother doesn't play FPS games - in fact he...dislikes them (gasp! Oh the shame!) BUT this game, so he told me, was "one of the best games he has ever played!" So hearing this stunning quip from an FPS Infidel, I just knew it had to be something special...and I was right.

The game follows the similar formulaic storyline of almost all FPS Shooters but has a slight deviation from the others on the market. Jack Carver (who you play as), is shipwrecked in Micronesia after he delivers a journalist named Valerie to one of the nearby islands. He wakes up to find himself being hunted by a group of mercenaries and is forced to take action. He soon discovers a video phone and a pistol and is frequently contacted by a Scientist named Doyle. Doyle informs Jack that Valerie has been kidnapped by the mercenaries and it's his job to rescue her. Jack is thrown into a world of attack boats, barbaric mercenaries and tonnes of gunfire as he learns more about why the mercenaries are here. However, armed soldiers are only the beginning of his worries - genetically engineered primates and humans have broken free and are intent on killing all that oppose them - including Jack. Jack's little action-packed adventure is soon turned into a Science-Fiction nightmare as he finds himself in the middle of a massive war. "Far Cry" may borrow from other FPS games, but the storyline is immersing enough for me. I give story 7/10.

The first thing that struck me about "Far Cry" was how diverse the controls were and how fantastic gameplay is. You can sprint, walk, jump, crouch, leopard crawl, look around corners - all great for combat situations. Firefights are usually very fierce, especially on the harder skill settings. Enemy AI is pretty darn good too - enemies will attempt to flank you, lay down suppressing fire and even retreat if they see they're in trouble. Of course some will sneak through the bushes assuming you can't see or hear them and the odd one will just charge at you without any sense of self-preservation. But still, whether you're shooting enemies with a sniper rifle, engaged in a firefight or clearing a beach using a Patrol boat, there's plenty of different ways to get around obstacles. The outdoor levels are incredible and are non-linear in nature. You can choose to use a hang-glider to escape enemies in one scenario, or you can choose to bust through with an Armoured Buggy. You choose. Indoor levels are pretty linear but are still beautiful and well-rendered. I cannot fault Gameplay. There may be some minor flaws, but overall Gameplay is fantastic! 10/10 from my side.

Now Graphics in this game are seriously good, even when only on High. Environments are beautiful and are filled with Tropical fish and colourful birds. Textures are phenomenal and the detail on characters are brilliant. Water reflects surrounding scenery and is translucent in areas, while lighting and shadows are ambient and subtle in some areas and harsh and thick in others. One thing I will note - you MUST, repeat, MUST have the latest Graphics card drivers installed on your PC. I had some big problems with "Far Cry' in the beginning due to my Graphics Drivers. At first the game would constantly freeze, and when I used Microsoft to install a Generic Driver, I found that some textures would not properly render and appear blue, red and green in some place. So do yourself a favour and make sure you have the latest authentic drivers for your Graphics card. But anyway, Graphics are beautiful - 10/10 without a doubt.

Sound - now, sound is the weakest point. When I say that, it's due to one thing: The Character voice overs are not great and are kinda silly in some place. Jack Carver doesn't sound dumb, but alot of the times he's pretty lame. And the Mercs says some pretty stupid things, but that's ok because the Mercs are pretty stupid. Other than that, Mutants, vehicles, background noise and everything else sound great. Sound gets a 7/10 I suppose.

Re-play value is not high - if you've played on one of the harder difficulties first like I did, then you probably won't play the single player campaign again. If you have Multiplayer, it's alot of fun. Unfortunately I get a high ping because of my connection to the internet and also because I generally live in the ass of the world. If you have a good internet connection, re-play value gets 8/10. If you don't, call it 4/10.

There are plenty of cool weapons too. You get 3 different types of Rifles, a Handgun, a Machete, a Machine Gun, various Grenades, 2 types of SMG's, an Automatic Shotgun and a number of mounted weapons including Heavy Machine Guns, Chain Guns and Mortars. There are alot of weapons, so that gets a solid 10/10 from me.

There are quite a few vehicles too! There's Trucks, Jeeps, Buggies, Hang-gliders, Patrol boats and Helicopters. Unfortunately you don't get an opportunity to fly a helicopter or shoot from one - that's my only complaint. But the other vehicles are fully operable and tonnes of fun to drive. 9/10 for vehicles.

I personally enjoyed "Far Cry" very much and is probably the most dynamic and beautiful FPS I have ever played - yes, my brother wasn't deluded at all. I recommend that all fans of FPS get a copy of this game: I got mine for R100 (that's about $17 or 9 pound sterling). Not only is it great, but it's a steal too! Just make sure you play the game. I don't regret buying it and I'm proud to have it in my vast collection. So "Far Cry" gets 95% in my opinion. Just buy the game, you won't regret it! Peace...

One of the best shooters. EVER!

This is one helluva game. Like almost all other shooters in the market today however, you need one helluva system (for best performance: P4 2.8 Ghz, 1GB RAM and 256 Mb graphics card) to enjoy everything this game has to offer: Absolutely stunning graphics, fantastic gameplay and a formidable AI. Download the latest patches to resolve any graphical issues. One of the best PC games I've ever played. Buy it NOW (if you already haven't), you wont be dissapointed one bit.

Amazing Game

This game has to be, by far, one of the best games I've ever played. It deserves a full 5 stars, but it does have some negative points for those who look for perfection.

Pros:
1. Graphics are incredible! When I played it for the first time, I couldn't believe my eyes. The water looks pretty realistic, except for when you look at it in corners (especially in the first part of the game when you're walking through the pipe. If you walk through the pipe and look at the water when you turn, it makes a perfect 90 degree angle. I don't think water does that :P)

2. Gameplay value is quite high. I'm sure after you beat the game, you'll want to try the game on the next difficuly setting.

3. Probably the best feature of this game is: the island is one giant map. Yes, there is a story that you have to follow in order to beat the game, but if you don't want to, that's totally fine. You can wander around the island and just explore, and there's no loading time. The only loading time is when you're beginning a new level.

4. The terrain is amazing. You know how in many games, the plants and trees are all on a coordinate plane? This causes the trees to seem like their rotating whenever you walk around them. In this game, UBI doesn't follow that. They meshed the plants together to make it seem realistic. So when you do walk around them, it doesn't rotate. (You can use these plants to hide).

5. AI is pretty smart (especially when compared to other games). They will send a search party to look for you. They've got amazing accuracy.

Cons:

1. Weapons have bad accuracy. The only accurate weapon is the sniper rifle. You're probably thinking 'well, the sniper rifle HAS to be accurate.' I'm just saying, out of all the weapons in the game, the sniper is the most accurate.

2. AI take a lot of damage. You can shoot a computer opponent up to 20 times to kill him, even if they're not wearing armor.

3. As I said in the 'pros' section, AI is (for the most part) pretty smart, but can be dumb at times as well. You'll hear a computer opponent saying something like "There he is!", and if you look around, he's nowhere to be found. They'll also shoot at you even when they can't see you (luckily they can't hit you though). AI's smartness increases with difficulty level though.

Aside from those Cons, if you're like me, you'll get over them pretty quickly, and won't let that bother you when you're playing the game. I got it when it first came out (when it was 49.99), and concluded it was definitely worth every penny.

If you're looking for a good FPS with good graphics, a good storyline, and awesome AI, Far Cry is definitely for you.

Brilliant, intense gameplay and graphics make up for slightly lacking story.

After finishing both "Half Life Episode I" and "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay" over a few days, I was looking for another fun first person shooter game that would let me pass away an hour or so a day, and allow me to unwind by slaughtering a constant flow of enemies with high powered weapons without resulting in the actual murder of innocent people. I'd heard that "Far Cry" was pretty good, so I bought it, installed it and got ready to blast.

The first thing I noticed is the astonishing graphics engine. It's without a doubt the most beautiful environment ever created for an FPS. My jaw was on the floor for the first few hours, checking out the ridiculously high detailed environment. The outdoor scenery looks like a paradise holiday destination with crystal clear blue water and lush green jungle. There is birdlife, fish and a general feeling that you're running around a living, breathing world.

One thing was very different right from the start and would play a major role in later missions. There is no save game option! There are checkpoints littered around the levels, but it can occasionally be around 10 to 20 minutes of solid game-play between them. At first this just annoyed me since I found myself reloading over and over on some of the harder missions. I couldn't just run into the fray, firing my weapon left, right and centre at anything that moves because one headshot would send me back a heck of a long way in some instances. I was forced to change my style of play from all out assault, to a stealthy, crawling, breath-holding, sweating, nerve wracking approach. I rediscovered the part of myself that loved "Thief: The Dark Project" so very much all those years ago. Yet I still got to combine that approach with levels of general carnage when it was simply unavoidable. I am now a firm believer that the save game option should be removed from many other (not all) first person games out there as it raises the intensity level dramatically.

The story itself is fairly average and the dialogue even more so, which is really what places "Far Cry" below the likes of "Half Life". You are basically just following instructions the entire game, used as a violent killing machine with no real choices. But for some reason, I just didn't care as I was so absorbed by the surroundings and simply surviving that it didn't lower my enjoyment. The enemies have very good AI, flanking me whenever possible and generally actually trying to avoid being shot rather than running straight at me. There are plenty of occasions though where an enemy will just stand there in the distance while you shoot them from plain sight, but generally all is good. The weapons are fantastic being both highly effective and satisfying to use. The sniper rifle as always is a personal favourite and this game makes awesome use of it, with massive maps of open ground.

While initially I was prepared for a standard "Serious Sam" type of game, "Far Cry" turned out to be so much more. Some fantastic graphics, inspired level design, forced variations of play and some fiercely intense gunfights make this game an absolute winner. You can add value for money as well since there are 20 long missions to get through. With no save option, those 20 will take you a long time to complete. But you will love it! I sure did!

Excellent DX9 Game

I will preface this review by saying this game is cutting-edge, and therefore you probably need a solid DX9 card to enjoy it fully. To the reviewer with a 5200 FX, the problem isn't the game, it is your video card.

For those of you with a broadband connection, download the demo and see for yourself (though the demo doesn't do the full game justice). Incredible graphics. Great gameplay. Plenty of weapons. Few software or compatibility problems for me. Sufficient game length and decent replay value (just because it's so fun). Mulitplayer seems fairly solid, but the single player is the reason to buy.

Highly recommend for the gaming enthusiast with a solid video card. For those with older or cheaper cards, I would try the demo first. Great FPS. Highly recommended.

Far Cry Review

Over the years, the FPS market has gotten huge. Titles like Halo and Half Life have made FPS players drool. Is there possibly room for another great FPS?

The answer to my question is yes, and that game is Far Cry. Far Cry was, untill Half Life 2 came out, the best single player FPS yet. The story was something Michael Chriton might write. Its keeps you involved so you want to see what happenes next.

One thing to the games credit, its beautiful. It has the best foliage and grass effects in any game to date. The textures could have been better, but not much better. This easily ranks in the top 3 best looking games.

The gameplay is very fun. It has vehicle segments which are great. You can drive and shoot at the same time. (There is one great part where you fly in a hang glider)It is also non-linear. The world is open, every island is explorable. That is what makes the game what it is.

I dont have many gripes about this game, but if I were to try to find some, here they are. One, the voive actor who did Jack is horrible. Overall, the voive actors are all good except for Jack. Two, the game is hard. REALLY hard, even on easy. Far Cry easilly has some of the best AI I have ever witnessed.

Overall, if you like FPS, get Far Cry, if you dont, get it anyway and you will like FPS.

Concept-Make a quality FPS is a market saturated with them.

Presintation-9.5- Tons of options, cool menues and lots of scalability options.

Graphics- 9.8- Beautiful, absolutly beautiful. It has the longest draw distances to ever be in a video game. You can see for miles. Also, the water effect is the best ive ever seen.

Sound- 8.8- The low point of the title. The Music iss good, along with the ingame sounds. But the voive actor for Jack is almost as bad as Kirsten Dunst in the spider-Man 2 game.

Playability- 9.6- A hard game, but easy to execute. vehicles are kinda a pain sometimes.

Gameplay- 9.2- Non-linear, vehicles, intense action, whats not to like? Almost everything is executed perfectly.

Entertainment- 9.4- Great fun, go pick this one up if you havent already.

Replay Value- 9.0- The single player campaign is 15 hours, and you will want to play it again. The multiplayer is good, but not great.

Far Cry ... great game!

I purchased this game after reading one good review after another about it. I'm glad I did, because this is one great game! As everyone else points out, the graphics are simply incredible! Nothing more to add to that.
The game play, although challenging (and frustrating) at times, is also great. There are a few bugs that I've noticed with the AI (just doing stupid things), but they certainly put up a good fight. Maps are great. I'm running a P4 3.0E GHz, 512 MB PC3200, Radeon 9800 pro ... and it runs near perfect. Occasional 'hiccups', but nothing too bad. Perhaps more RAM would fix these issues.

FarCry proves its worth

This game looks cheap. Even sells for a cheap price now. It has a cliche'd cover, a macho guy with a macho gun, and oh-no-let's-save-the-hot-chick kinda storyline, right? Wrong!
The moment you start the game, you realize that there's more than meets the eye. At first you expect a repetitive FPS with good graphics just to fill those long boring summer hours you have.
However, after you step out the cave and into the light...
WHAM! all the beautiful ocean and tropical islands speak louder than any machine gun-rattle, roar of a trigen, or any FPS of the past. One look at the beauty of the outdoors of this place, and you're there. Inside dark hallways and dimly lit rooms you feel the terror of horror as if you're experiencing a twisted nightmare. This truly is paradise gone to hell. And you thought it was gonna be boring!
There isn't really a melee button, just a knife, but most of the time no humans get close enough for you to use it and the trigens will kill you at that close of a range, so melee is pointless anyway. This game packs more of a fright night than Halo did with the flood. Well maybe not the flood, but at least it's pretty freaky.
Whereas u look at the cover and ur like yeah, it's a playable Rambo. But wrong again! This game has a think mode in it, and has a visibility meter like in Splinter Cell series. Many times the enemy is enhanced and is just as intelligent as you are, and you have to always be on ur guard.
The weapons are fairly well designed, and are real guns, no fake AK239876 or anything like that. The game does give armor, but you soon realize that's just a small wedge between u and a grim fate. It boils down to how intelligently you handle a situation in this game, and for many FPS fans that want a game that demands more than just a zombie-like mode of playing (kill this, run, kill that, run, end of mission. kill this, run, kill that run...). Hopefully the sequel will live up to these standards and more. As for now, this game is easily worth more than any of the other games out there. It's fear level rises much higher than most games I've played, and at the moment it's extremely cheap, like $10 at walmart, a steal at it's worth. While HL2 still lingers around 20-30 dollars, and Doom 3 around 20$, FarCry is definitely the one worth it all.

Wow

This is without out doubt the Best Graphics I have ever seen on any game. It's got preety good sound, great non-linier gameplay, great replay value, multipule level settings, very long (5 disks), pretty good story, and a lot of weapons. The AI aren't the best but they are still fun to play against. This is one of the Best (if not the best) FPS I have ever played!!! Well done Cretek. I can't wait untill CRYSIS comes out. Its the next Game by Cretek.

Graphics: 10
Sound: 8.5
Gameplay: 9.5
Replay: 10
