Wow! I mean, Wow!

I had never intended to play this game. At best, my feelings towards first person shooters are...reserved. Mostly I hate them outright. Seeing it on the shelves as I looked for games, I thought it would probably have some decent eye-candy, but no real substance beyond that, so I passed. Serious mistake on my part. A couple of months later I bought a new graphics card for my computer, and decided I needed a new game that I could test it out on - of course, a first person shooter was the logical way to go, as they tend to make the most use out of high end graphics cards. I picked up Far Cry based on all the positive reviews I've seen, popped it in, and was absolutely floored by how insanely good this game is!

The graphics in Far Cry are absolutely top-notch. I really haven't seen any game top it, even in the newest releases. Foilage and trees, water and rocks, leaves and grass, all rendered in absolutely stunning detail. It's like actually being on a tropical island. Immersion in this game is near total. Sounds are excellent, and the voice work isn't bad either. Extreme attention was paid to little details to make things appear more real and seemless. The AI is actually intelligent, as the enemy will actually shout commands to each other "He's over there!" "Flank him from the other side!" as they all come at you from varying angles, hiding behind cover as they fire.

The only graphical features which weren't as good were the Tri-Gens, the monstrous ape creatures that the storyline is centered around. While they look OK, they seem completely out of place, as though they just don't belong alongside all the other objects in the game. When compared to the environments they are running around in or the human models, the Tri-Gens are sub-par, and unfortunately detract from the immersion, which leads me to my only other complaint about this game. The story gets pretty weak pretty fast. It starts out strong - all mystery and intruige, but then once the curtain is pulled and you realize what's going on, it's kind of a let down after so much build up. But hey, if story was the only consideration, first person shooters would never be bought, so don't worry, you're not missing out on much here.

Those issues aside, this game is near perfect. Cruising around in a speed boat while shooting missiles at people has got to be one of the most gratifying experiences ever. There's also quite a thrill to sneaking through some trees, hiding behind a wall of shrubs while you take aim and decimate the ranks of hired mercenaries blocking you from your destination. Early on the game the main character picks up a pair of binoculars that has one nifty little extra feature - it amplifys sound in whatever direction you are facing. So even if you can't necesarilly see through a particular area, you will get audio clues to help you figure out what's around the bend. Hearing all the mercenaries on the islands banter between themselves, especially about things you have just done, is a really nice touch. There is also a good deal of replayability in Far Cry. Just about every encounter in the game can be played out differently. In general it pays to be stealthy, sneaking around and scouting areas to see where all the enemies are before moving in, killing enemies quietely, one by one, until someone else finally notices and you have to then fight defensively, working towards your goal. However, there is much fun to be had by doing the exact opposite - go find a jeep somewhere with a machine gun or rocket launcher attached to the top and force your way past the opposition, guns blazing, tires squeeling, health meter rapidly dropping.

Quit your job, stop going to social functions, leave your significant other, cease spending time paying attention to completely un-important details like bathing daily and personal hygiene, and spend the next six weeks doing nothing but skulking around an island chain finding new ways to blow stuff up. This is an experience you don't want to miss.

Another reviewer commented on what would occur if this movie was a cinematic experience....unfortunately that may become an all too real possibility. You see, one of the worst directors in the history of film owns the rights to Far Cry. You may recall the name "Uwe Boll" attached to such cinematic refuse as "Alone in the Dark", "House of the Dead", and "Blood Rayne". This man actually enjoys ruining video game franchises by making horrible film renditions. In the event that this game does become a movie, avoid at all costs! Such a shame too, because this definetely could be an absolutely amazing movie as well. The devil that is Uwe is also currently in the process of making a movie version of Dungeon Siege...why, oh why must games be made consistently into the worst movies ever??

Super Fun,Super Real!!

This game is extremely fun,and you will be playing it four hours!

This is a FPS,but it uses real physics, which means objects
behave like in the real world. Overhead lamps swing, creating
swinging shadows. Boxes fall from shelves, while you shoot at enemies through wooden shelters. When shooting enemies in water, blood flows from
their bodies in swirling streams.

There is no one way to complete each mission, but many different ways. You can throw rocks,or shoot gasoline filled containers,to distract the enemy, along with an arsenal of powerful weapons you can use, while you sneak into camp, head quarters etc...

Maybe divide and conquer will work,if a head-on approach constantly gets you fragged.

The tropical graphcis, makes you feel like you are actually there,in the humid damp jungle and of course you got Surround sound dolby 5.1

Running Nvidia Geforce MX440,64MB video and CPU P4 with 512MB ram,I had no problem at all playing this game. Only slight lag, when I used the "night goggles".

Also, this game is also MULTIPLAYER using LAN or INTERNET,or you can play the campaign.

I think this is one of the best next generation games todate, and it will be a classic FPS.

After having finished the demo of the game//

+++Good things:
+ AI of the ennemies is impressive.
+ Beautiful lanscapes, very detailed textures.
+ Can drive boats and all vehicles you can find :)
+ Good use of the sniper rifle, need to hold your breath to make sure you'll hit.

---Bad things:
- Some inertia in the jump. Seems like we're on the moon when we jump.
- Grenades need to do more damages: If u throw a grenade not exactly on a vehicle but 2 feet right next to it, you have a lot of chances the vehicle won't blow.
- Need more Controls options, like a "toggle crouch" in addition to the "crouch" who makes you hold the button, same with zoom of normal weapons, etc.

But the game deserves a 5 stars. It's quite original, and I like this mix between Half-Life and Counter, good job.

Stunning graphics meets great gameplay.

Wow. That's all I have to say. Far Cry has raised the bar for everyone else now. Dramatically. The graphics are gorgeous. The environments massive, open and immersive. The AI is efficient and can be brutally cunning. The game is suspsenseful and thrilling. And add on top of that, the game is more than 25 hours long, but doesn't get boring. In fact, the last four or five missions of the game are some of the most thrilling not only in the game, but out of any first-person shooter on the market.

This game is hard. VERY hard. Sometimes frustrating, and almost impossible. But never quite. It's challenging, but it's also very satisfying. The challenge adds an edge to the game that makes it extraordinarily exciting when you are crawling through the bushes, hoping to God that you shoot the last enemy before he shoots you, and praying that you find a health pack somewhere.

The game is about 2/3 outdoor areas and about 1/3 indoor areas. The outdoor areas are by far, the strength of the game. They are so huge that it can take half an hour just to traverse across them. The big huge areas give you a number of ways to approach your objective. Lots of objectives have multiple paths for completing them. They are lush jungles, full of beautiful and inviting rivers and lakes, trees, rocks, birds, and lots of vegetation. The rocks and vegetation provide you with the cover that you will need to stay alive. Far Cry is as much of a stealth game as it is an action game. Enemies are too tough to face four or five at at time. You have to crawl slowly sometimes, sniping them from a distance, or ambushing them while they comb the jungle looking for you.

The indoor areas look nice and have a creepy atomspheric feel to them, but they are frustrating to play through, and they feel like a ripoff of Half-Life. The monsters that you face are more annoying than anything, and some of them can kill you with one or two hits. The middle part of the game has lots of indoor, monster-filled areas and that is probably the weakness of the game.

Far Cry rivals games like Halo and Splinter Cell when it comes to AI. The AI is not only great for stealth, but for action as well. This is very rare, since most games are only good at one or the other. They are efficient at using cover and searching for you when you are hiding. You can't just sit behind a rock a mile away and pick off guys by sniping them. They will actually hunt you down. Sometimes they will even send a helicopter up to hunt for you. When they find you, they will use cover and use grenades to flush you out.

PC games have seen a few technological innovatios in the past year or so. Dynamic lighting and shadows, and realistic physics, to name a couple. Far Cry perfects these innovations, where other games have struggled. The physics engine is excellent, and so is the lighting. In one area, I watched in awe as a threw a grenade into the end of a crowded hallway, and watched as the explosion rocked the light. The light swung back and forth wildly, causing all of the shadows in the hallway to move in sync. Far Cry is loaded up with details like that. For instance, you can see the picture in the lens of your sniper rifle, even when you aren't zoomed in.

The story for the game is sort of a disappointment. It's not really bad, but it would have been nice to have a better story to connect all of the nail-biting action. This flaw sort of stands our more, since the rest of the game is so good. The voice-acting isn't too good either, except for a couple of the friendly characters that help you. Otherwise, the sound for the game is excellent.

Far Cry is such a pleasant surprise because it is not only full of technological innovations, but it backs them up with a really, really fun game. And then instead of ending after 8 hours, it manages to keep you hooked for 3 times longer. So once the "oooh" and "ahhh" factor of the game wears off, your enjoyment of the game doesn't. If you can get over the near-impossible difficulty, then you would be committing a crime against yourself by not playing this game.

Farcry - Who Needs Half Life 2?

After eons of waiting for Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Halo 2, I can say that Farcry has stepped up to the plate and now occupies the higher eschelon that these other great FPS titles have already reached. Farcry is an excellent game. I downloaded the demo a few days ago and immediatley rushed out and purchased the complete game after I had gotten to the end of the demo.

Your adversaries are excellent, the A.I. for them is unpredictable. The game gives you plenty of standard and unique weapons to stifle their unpredicability. The rocket launcher is a favorite of mine.

The environment in the game is superb. The water looks excellent and the outdoor scenery is incredible. The distance shots in the game are breathtaking. This game also gives me a reason to purchase some needed upgrades to my machine. I'm running on medium quality. I thought I had a workhorse but I guess it needs to be enhanced.

Vehicles in this game have a sort of weight to them, the supply truck lumbers, while the 4 wheel buggy zips and bounces. Firing the vehicle-mounted weapons sounds and looks great.

The mutated apes freak me out. Can't sleep claw-monkey Treligents will eat me! I love this game. Get Farcry now!

Highly enjoyable. Looks and runs good on my old GFTi4600

That's GeForce Ti-4600 Graphic Card, released over 2 years ago. I can't put everything on high, but the game ran smoothly with the auto-detect the game did on my system.

\The biggest thing I love about this game is the draw distance. If you play any game and say, "Oh look at how beautiful those fogs covering up the distance are...", well, you won't be seeing much of that here.

Sniping is brought up to a new level with this game. Any other game, long distance is about 100 meters. This...is 10 times that distance. Using your binoculars aren't novelty item. You don't have to squint to see if what you're seeing through your sniping scope is an enemy or just a graphical glitchy-blob. Non of that. You zoom in, you can clearly see your enemies from far, faaaar away. It's a lovely feeling to be standing in one island and snipe someone on the other island a kilometer away, and watch him fall from the bridge he was walking across and into the water. Sweet.

But the game's not all about outdoors. There's plenty of actions inside bunkers, warehouses, and cave systems. The graphic engine does all of them very nicely, and without any of them annoying load times between the transition that you might see on lesser engines. Oh, and there's the complementary rag doll physics that's pretty much a requirement for any self respecting FPS game.

The AI doesn't leave much of an impression. Sometimes they're tough (unfairly so...they have perfect accuracy while traveling in a helicopter or in a boat), and other times they leave you wondering why they went right past you without shooting you. Suffice to say they do their job.

The gripes.

Driving - There's no emergency brake. No, correction...there no brake at all. You go forward and backward and...that's it. In between is what seems to be neutral gear, because when you're on a slope...your car rolls down. I've lost so many bugees and humvees that way. Would it be too much of a hassle for the car maker to install brakes?!

Documentation - you get this 12 page flip book that's inside the CD CASE. Nothing else. Was there an online documentation? Don't know, don't care. I feel a good manual is a MUST in any game.

That's it. Lots of pluses, few minor gripes.

Great Game! And I'm No FPS Lover!

First: I'm not a big FPS (first person shooter fan), more of a strategy guy. Usually these games are too Doom-like (nothing personal, just gets old), the AI sucks, the storyline too dull or cumbersome (hate wandering around trying to figure crap out all day or stupid AI that hangs in the same spot for no reason).

THIS GAME IS AWESOME! I agree with all about the graphics (outstanding), the plot is reasonable and you can have fun without getting burdened with b.s. puzzles. You don't have to go down a hallway if you don't want to (though there is a general direction you need to follow). Plenty of save spots too, though you can't save it anywhere you want. Swimming is a blast, underwater, above, nice terrain features. You can approach target areas from multiple directions or use vehicles. The vehicles are simple however - forward, back, turn. Not easy to master right away, especially moving fast.

There are a few criticisms (hardcopy manual does suck) but I don't care -- it's fun! If you liked Medal of Honor, you'll love this more!

A must have for any gamer

I am not an avid gamer with an over-built PC. I play these games more as a hobby or means of escape rather than a way of life. I just don't have that kind of time. Far cry is a great game to lose yourself in. The maps are expansive and, with the right video card, full of detail. It takes 5 disks (about 4GB I think) to install the game. Needless to say, the game is large. As far as the CD-R/DVD-R issue stated in some of the other reviews is concerned, I did not have that problem. I have a single 48x CD-R through which I installed the game without issue. Not sure what their problem is.

If you think your PC can't handle the game, some fairly inexpensive and simple upgrades may be in order. RAM is really cheap now. I upgraded from 512MB DDR 2700 to 1GB DDR 3200 for $100. The minimum requirement is 256. A memory upgrade also helps a great deal with running multiple memory-intensive programs simultaneously. You can never have too much memory. The other upgrade is, for obvious reasons, a video card. You can get a Sapphire ATI RADEON 9800SE video card from NEWEGG.COM right now for $115. This will make a significant difference in game play especially if you are currently relying on "on-board" video. Considering gamers spend upwards of $500 to $600 on top-of-the-line video cards, $115 is pretty damn cheap. This game auto configs itself based on your system specs. I have a 2.8GHz P4, 1GB DDR, 64MB video card (min req'd) and 19" Sony LCD. On installation, the game set all graphic detail to low and a resolution of 800x600. I set a few things to medium and the res to 1024x768 and it ran the game just fine. No hang ups, crashes, etc. Even on medium to low settings the game looks great. Real gamers expect to run games at their full potential. Regular hobby gamers like myself can live with a little less detail in our games. The only question is...

how serious do you take your gaming?

Landmark FPS that remains unparalleled

I bought this game hot off the presses last year, and played it shortly thereafter. With a crowded library of dozens of highly-acclaimed PC and Xbox games I have bought and not yet played, I am pretty choosy about which games I spend time playing and which I skip. I have so many games that I don't hesitate to stop playing a new game if it isn't up to scratch. There have been a good many of these over the past 2 years. My point is that I've played a LOT of games, and I do not hesitate to criticize where criticism is due.

As a big fan of the sci-fi FPS genre, FarCry falls square in the middle of my particular "expertise" (terminology applied loosely here). When I played FC, I was simply astonished - so much so that I have re-played it not once, but twice. Now, I'm getting the itch to play it yet again. Though it is indeed right in the middle of an overcrowded genre with a many solid, interesting entries, since my first replay, I have conferred upon this game the dubious honor of being the best FPS I have ever played. (More emphatically and confidently, I would say, "This is simply the best FPS ever.") As yet, the only game that has even come within sight of this distinction would be HalfLife 2. But in my mind, FC enjoys an uninterrupted eminence in its genre.

What makes this game so spectacular? The physics are certainly great, but a great many games also have great physics. It is the phenomenology of the game; in other words, it is the engulfing experience. There is an interesting storyline you play through with an interesting progression of nerve-wracking scenarios. Having a coherent, sufficiently involved and progressive storyline running along with a game that doesn't become intrusive or disruptive to the gameplay is a necessary element of any GREAT game. But this is certainly not FC's only merit; it is only the beginning.

Perhaps the greatest feature of FarCry is the level design. The textures are great, the level design is phenomenal, but most importantly, there is VARIETY. In the course of the game, you encounter more than a half-dozen completely distinct environments, and within each, there are almost constant variations. Every last detail in every environment - from a wrecked, rusted out WWII Japanese aircraft carrier to a high-tech laboratory to a tropical encampment of mercenaries - is executed with both technical and artistic brilliance. Not only do you have the exhiliarating thrill of the hunt, the chase, and the great A.I. to contend with, but you have the awe-striking scenery. Many times throughout the game, you will be tempted to just stop and look around. Maybe twenty times throughout the game, one involuntarily says to oneself, "Wow." At so many points, the art is simply breathtaking.

I'm not sure if there are any absolute "firsts" presented in this game, though there very well may be. However, I am QUITE certain that the game is crammed with "bests", from beginning to end. I have never played another game with such awe-striking artistic quality, so much variety, so much action, or such totally gripping immersion in every environment.

Now I see that there is another aspect of this game that is awe-striking: Amazon is selling it for $17! For anyone who is as interested in sci-fi/fantasy FPSs as I am, there is no better game available for ANY price. This game certainly comes with the highest recommendation of a fairly experienced sci-fi FPS gamer!

FUN game, sometimes corny dialog

It may not be the best story ever told, but the game play is great. The general plot is standard--rescue a girl from a mad scientist on an island. The high points are good graphics, amazing scenery, and fun missions.

The maps are all different in layout and the missions, though related, do not feel repetitive. So far I haven't seen a map that is not very cool to look at and move through.

In most cases you end up having to kill everyone in an area (isn't that what we are here for anyway?), but you can use some sneakiness to engage enemies carefully and sometimes even bypass some useless people. Quiet kills draw less attention, but in "easy" mode you can usually still barge in and shoot people without being too frustrated.

The enemies vary in brains and weapons. Some work together a bit, using silenced weapons to really give you a hard time in a jungle, others are just loud fools that give themselves away with chatter and go down easy. Guards in towers will attack you with rockets and sniper rifles, while grunts hanging around the mess hall just have pistols or standard rifles. Many enemies will take cover and attack from behind rocks, etc.

You get to use boats, land vehicles, and even a glider. The vehicles are almost always there to avoid lengthy, boring walks. You can hop in and out at any time, making them an integrated part of the whole map, not like Medal of Honor (a great game) where vehicle use is uaually a seperate interlude where you are stuck in the vehicle until the next mission.

FarCry has HUGE open maps without the tedious "you have to go to every corner or you will lose" setup of other games. The maps are all very large, and you can get where you are going more than one way. The general path is there, but you aren't constantly herded the right way. You don't need to turn over every rock, just move along however you want to get where you are going. But there is still variety, with some maps having enclosed areas as well.

The graphics are absolutely amazing if you have a good enough computer and video card. Even the "low" settings aren't too bad with a half decent card, but "medium" and up are really cool. This game can probably give your video card anything it can take.

There are some compatibility issues. The demo wouldn't work on my new video card, but the full version does. I don't think the demo has had any of the first version problems fixed, which usually happens with any new game. Not nearly as bad as getting Halflife 2 to run.

I installed on a CDR drive just fine, so I don't know exactly what that was about. Maybe this "feature" has been removed because I am using the game a long time after some of those complaints, or maybe there was more to it.

If you don't have this game yet, it's probably one of the best deals out there at current prices. Lots of stores have it for twenty or less.
