Buyer beware

This game is extremely enjoyable. However, make sure your system can handle it. The minimum system requirements are not enough to play the game at a realistic level of performance. My PC is top shelf, but I still had to add memory and put gameplay video levels at a lower setting to avoid stalls and crashes. With that said, it is still worth it. There is a storyline but the manner in which you accomplish goals is up to you: stealth, miss-direction or straight agressive assault. The vehicles are very easy to control and add much to the options available in accomplishing a task. I highly recommend the game.

Great game

I bought Far Cry right after it came out, and I just recently finished playing through the game as I had spurts where I wasn't able to sit down and spend any time with it. This is a very good game, and I'm saying that as a person who doesn't like shooters very much. I had to try this game after all the hype it received and being a big UbiSoft fan. (You can definitely tell that UbiSoft was involved in this project.)

In the graphics department, this game is amazing, but it will beat up on your computer. You are given choices as to what level of graphic quality you want to play the game in, ranging from Low to Very High, and on the water quality you can choose Ultra High. My system, which exceeds all the dreaded minimum system requirements and meets all the recommended requirements was able to run this game on high about 80% of the time. Somtimes when there was an unusual amount of enemies on screen, things would get a little choppy and I would have to tone down the video options a little just until things calmed down a bit. I have heard that this is a problem with this game even if you have a state of the art video card, so expect it to happen a couple of times, but not very often at all. I also suggest that if your machine can't run this game at least on medium, it's probably not worth it, even though they went to great pains to make sure it would be a fun game on all levels of detail. Half the fun of this game is the jaw dropping scenery and amazing long range battles.

The special effects, sound, and physics in this game are awesome. Launching a rocket into a large group of mercenaries will send them flying every which way and is VERY realistic looking. When you snipe someone off of a tower or bridge, you will see the body fall. Explosions look like real explosions, and the guns sound like real guns. The music is interactive with where you are in a mission. If you are getting close to enemies, the music will get more intense. This makes the game very movie-like.

The A.I. in this game is second to none. The enemy will flank you, sneak up on you, and try to snipe you. There is an on screen stealth gauge to tell you if you've been detected or not. Early in the game you find binoculars that not only give you magnification up to 24x, but also give you audio. When you get in close enough, you will see and hear your enemy. They might even be talking about you and where they last saw you. They also might be doing things like stretching, smoking, tying their shoes, etc. In large camps, they may radio for help if they see you, so finding their radio and taking it out is a good idea. The A.I. is so smart that you will never play a scene through the same way twice.

Now for the ONLY two reasons I give this game a 4 instead of a 5. The first reason is the horrible voice acting. The main character is the worst, but the enemy mercs are a close second. And they all seem to say the same three things all the time. This can get annoying, but it doesn't happen often enough where I cared that much. The other bad thing about this game is the vehicles. They come into play fairly often and are very difficult to maneuver. Forget about driving and shooting at the same time, at least effectively. The cars seem clunky and you can't tell whether you're able to get around things or not. It doesn't at all feel like you're really driving, and I actually started to dread sections where driving was essential. However, I did enjoy driving the patrol boats because you could go offshore and take everything out with the on board machine gun before going on land to reap the benefits.

All in all, this was a terrific game. It throws challenge your way at all times, even on the "Easy" difficulty setting. In fact, even on "Easy" the last two or three missions of the game were pretty hellish to get through, but not so hard that you don't want to go back and try again after you die. There are parts of this game that are downright addicting, and it will actually ruin your social life and one point or another if you get into it enough.

One of the best singleplayer FPS ever.

The only thing it lacks is a good multiplayer component, but really, I didn't miss it as the singleplayer mode was so good! It has great gameplay, some of the best graphics ever made, good sound, a reasonable length and various difficulty modes, and once you're done with all of that you can mess around with its "sandbox" editor and make your own maps!

I loved this game better than Doom 3.

I really did, don't get me wrong, I am not saying Doom 3 is not a great game too, Doom 3 is very story oriented and resembles the original Doom alot, the story on this one is pretty silly since it's like a cheesy action movie and the game does not take itself seriously when you hear the conversations going on among the soldiers in the island.

This game takes a different angle to linear and scripted scenes you get to see in FPSs. I have read reviews complaining about how the game can be hard and the lack of quicksave is a pain, but once you get in the spirit of the game and realize that you can go at the same scenario in different ways it becomes fun, there are scenes where you can take out a lot of mercenaries with no one noticing. Once you understand how stealthy you can be and how you can lure enemies and take them out from great distances it becomes an experience.

Now, it's not all good though, there is only one melee weapon, a machete, unless you really like knives and being a real silent killer is kinda useless and you ditch almost inmediately. Lenght, this game is long, and if the quicksave thing bothers you, there is a code to remedy that, but this game is big. And the multiplayer was a drag for me.

Far Cry can be fast or slow depending on how you play out each scene, but you can tell that you have to go in with a strategy, scoping out all enemies in the area, determining which weapon is the best one, if you are gonna be running, walking or crouching. It's well thought out and change of pace, but a very welcomed one.

Game Of The Year

I believe this is a game worth buying and playing. I was very fortunate to have a birthday that coincided with seeing this game and would've bought it myself if otherwise. I've read many reviews of this game and it's interesting to see how this title polarizes it's players to either love or hate it.

The people who complain about the save points are probably Quake players who always want to run in guns a blazing and don't think strategically. I was able to negotiate some extremely difficult levels by using stealth and patience and complete whole levels without taking a hit. Having played LOS: Vietnam I was used to this sort of gameplay. Slow down folks, and think strategically. I found alternate ways into areas and was able to engage the enemy on my terms without the AI ever knowing where I was. Sprint, shoot, duck for cover is essential. I even used silent kills very effectively.

The lack of armor and healthpacks can be frustrating, but probably more realistic and puts the onus on a player to think before he jumps into a potentially dangerous situation. There does always seem to be health and armor when you really do need it.

The environments and graphics are nice especially the water. It reminds me of both Chaser and LOS: Vietnam with the nice visuals. The vegetation isn't nearly as plentiful or lush as LOS but it seems to provide enough to hide from the AI enemies.

I like that you are forced to think strategy in terms of weapons since you can only carry 4. I do think that not being able to shoot from the water while swimming is a drawback. The scoped weapons work well at long distance and the suppressed MP-5 is great for stealth kills as well. I know some players complain about enemies seeing where you shoot from when using the sniper rifle, but it seems to fire more like a tracer so you must use it with care.

It has a great combination of elements. In order to do well, you must have abilities for both stealth as well as Quake/Doom abilities. A good friend and I swapped playing the levels we were good at and found it to be a great way to play. He is great at the regular run & gun methodology, but was amazed at my diligence and ability to sneak around and do silent kills. He also realized by watching me play that by using the binoculars to locate enemies by their implant and using the cryovision for invisible enemies, you can be much more effective. Also, you can approach it like Halo or Halo2 when the mutants and enemies are fighting each other. Never engage as a third-party in any conflict until the other two sides have worn each other out or weakened each other. It's basic strategy.

I'm glad that I haven't found any cheats yet, and that it's a game that forces me to think through options and alternatives other than just one way to attack a situation. If you don't need to engage in a firefight, don't. This is another basic military strategy. If you can take an objective without injury or loss, it is more effective and demoralizing to an enemy in the long run.

BTW, the vehicles roll because they are manual transmission and will roll unless you have the gear engaged and the gas pedal down. Why do the players griping not realize this? Maybe they could've put in an emergency/parking brake, but what would be the point? Get a clue guys!

It's nice to have an AI that makes it hard to win. Maybe those guys who are so used to God mode in games really aren't that good at playing these games. If you want to be able to win just for the sake of winning, go back and play your old copies of Doom, Quake, etc. More games need to be modeled after Far Cry for it's winning combination of play technique, visuals, and challenge.

BTW, if you haven't done so, check out Line Of Sight: Vietnam too. I've done a review on it too.

Incredible, fun game

I would like to add my comments to some of the reviews I've read on this site, which for the most part are accurate: The graphics surpass the state of the art, the gameplay is fun and engaging, the environment is expansive and free-roaming, the enemy AI is awesome and the tactical/strategy aspects are very well done. This is an incredible game, and for no reason should anyone deprive themselves of the opportunity to play it based on the criticisms laid out on Amazon.

The major complaint I read about here is the saving system. I actually don't mind it so much, and believe such systems are nice in many ways. They can help to avoid long and frequent load times, which in this case are only present when you first run the game. They also do force a bit of care on your part when playing. The only problem I have with it is you don't know when a save-game is coming, it just happens... and you could be hanging onto a mere shred of health. It would be nice to have the option to save now or save later at a checkpoint... that way you could at least attempt to bolster your health before your game is saved. This is an extremely minor problem with the game in my opinion, and it actually hasn't really detracted from my ability to enjoy it, it would just be a nice-to-have.

A Tropical Dream/Nightmare Come True

The Sci-Fi Channel is well known for making glossy mid-budget movies based upon fairly shoe-string plots. Take a main character, or anti-hero, place them in a bizarre situation in an exotic locale, and load it with tons of special effects. Of course on TV this seldom translates into good ratings because the viewer is rooted in everyday reality which prevents them from really ever fully accepting the premise. Another reviewer used the phrase "suspension of disbelief" and I think it's well used on Far Cry. Here's a game that would make a schlocky TV show or movie but for whatever reason crosses over into the medium of computer game and becomes a precious jewel of a game, an icon of how to put such a thing together and become a hit. I begin to wonder if this is the best recipe for computer games, but that's for another post!

In Far Cry you play the character of Jack Carver. Jack is a laid back, contract tour guide of sorts in Micronesia. Jack also happens to be an ex-special forces operative, which brings him to the attention of a mysterious lady named Valerie who hires him to take her out to a remote chain of islands. Jack's vessel is destroyed by a surface to ship missile and Jack finds himself unconcious in the remains of an old Japanese WWII fortress. He is soon contacted by an enigmatic researcher named Doyle who guides Jack through a very large portion of the upcoming game. It turns out that Valerie is actually a CIA agent sent to research a scientific madman who's performing macabre experiments on animals and transforming them into something much worse...

This plot wouldn't work too well on TV, but here it is absoultely dazzling. CryTek has also managed to give the player a premium selection of weapons and vehicles to complete thier tasks with, and not only that but the game can be completed through several methods. Want to play a stealthy character? There are ways to sneak around enemies with a silenced MP-5 submachine gun. Want to pick of your enemies from a distance? The sniper rifle is your calling. Want to just barrel in and do the whole thing Rambo style? It is *all* here, and this allows a surprising amount of replayability in the game as you can finish it with any number of different styles.

CryTek has given Far Cry one of the most impressive graphics engines I have ever seen in a game. Two years after it's release and this game still pushes the envelope for graphical detail. Low crawling through the bushes will cast a series of moving shadows on your weapons. Other islands in the chain can be seen from a *looooong* distance away. Even the underwater life, be it fish or seaweed, are to be seen to be believed. Colorful parrots fly overhead and seagulls glide and hover by cliffs. And if you ever wanted to go to a tropical island but could never afford it, believe me...this is as close to the real thing as you are liable to find on a computer anywhere. It's been over a decade since my last visit and I get a kick out of just driving the boat around the islands and over shoals. The addition of the old WWII Japanese forts idea adds just the right touch. One will run across old Zero fighter planes crashlanded on the island. Remains of coastal artillery and even an old Japanese aircraft carrier can be found and explored largely at the player's whim. It's this kind of attention to detail that really brings this game out.

Enemy AI is very, very impressive. Mercenaries will communicate with each other and use cover expertly. They're sneaky too, and will try and flank you constantly while the others keep you pinned down. Trigens, the biological nightmares being bred on the island, will chase you relentlessley, causing you to panic. And for good reason, one swipe from their claws is capable of killing you. I found using the Cry-Vision Goggles is amazingly effective in seeing Trigens before they see you.

PROS:
-The game has a real "Island of Dr. Moreau" feel to it. And it really, really comes across well
-Fantastic weapon selection
-Superb enemy AI
-Vehicles are a blast. Period.
-Graphics are top-notch, two years after the game's release. Impressive.
-The Micronesian islands feel like real islands. You can get yourself lost in the immersion of the whole thing.
-The binoculars and Cry-Vision Goggles are not one-use items like they are in other games. You will use them repeatedly and to good effect.
-Hang gliders deserve special mention. What a fantastic execution of a unique idea!
-Very good plot

Cons:
-Voice acting is ho-hum, but it can be argued that this adds to the experience
-Graphics will tax a lot of computers, although if you have a PC less than a year old it's playable at high detail.
-One can only carry 4 weapons at a time. It's more realistic this way but may bother some players.
-Some levels are near impossible to finish
-No save feature. Auto-saves only

This is an excellent game and one in which I cannot recommend enough. It's well worth your time to take a look at this classic. My hat's off to Cry-Tek. Well done!

One of the best games ever!

I'm 44 and played lots of FPS computer games, and this is one of the best ever. Awesome graphics, thought-provoking gameplay, good AI and exciting, too. The "no F6 save" option took some getting used to, but you learn to adapt to it and thus play the game carefully, actually mastering each level. Completing a few of the levels feels like a real accomplishment when you finally beat it. I'm playing Half-Life 2 now, but so far I'm missing Far Cry!

One of the Best

I somehow missed FarCry when it first came out, I am a huge FPS fan and have played all the usual suspects: Doom 3, HL 2, UT 2004, etc. I would say FarCry is on par with Half-Life 2, although HL2 was better in gameplay, graphics and sound - FarCry has a much better ending and is much more diverse in it's options for play. HL2 is like a movie, whereas you play FarCry. I have read many reviews saying the game is unfairly difficult, but I disagree. I would say the term is "realistic", if you walk into a room with an armed assailant knowing you are coming and you get shot before you figure out where its coming from is that truly unrealistic or difficult? I would say that is pretty much realistic and if you want easy shoot em' ups go grab Halo 2. People were also complaining about the save issue when its highly documented that you just need to use the console: ~ and type in save_game 01 or whatever you want to call that slot. Its a great game altogether, but here are some issues in my opinion: the voicing is terrible, the game attempts NOLF level antics but still tries to remain serious and it ends up feeling sloppy sometimes. The beginning sequence is an excellent example, even with the guide write up on the storyline, it still makes no sense and that is how you start the game - confused. The interface is needing work, the weapon slots are backwards - meaning the slots are recorded by the weapons and you reassign the slots to keys not the other way around and the map window is clumsy. The vehicles are too powerful and look cartoonish and drive like remote control cars - they typically have touchy steering and unpredictable handling. They make up for this with their weapons - which once engaged can eliminate an army in seconds. Even with the downsides, at the current price - this is a must for FPS fans. You do need a monster rig, but if you are in the market for this type of game, any newer title will require some serious hardware.

Great, Great Game

I'm not a huge FPS fan but every once in a while I need to fulfill my animalistic urges to blow something up and lay waste to others. FarCry is a beautiful game topped only by its playability. The AI is "smart" and will sneak around and flank, call for backup, sound alarms, etc... instead of just barrleing straight at you. A couple of times I've made the mistake of focusing on one guy or area and had another enemy pop up right in my face from the side.

The graphics are amazing! My comp isn't a beast, it's pretty standard by today's means, but I have put in a 256MB GeForce graphics card. Standing on top of a hill everything miles away is still crystal clear and detailing hasn't diminished at all, it's absolutely gorgeous. Physics of the game are great and operate realistically. Get this game, you won't be disappointed.
