As most of you are probably aware, the prequel to this game was simply fantastic--a truly interesting plot, excellent gameplay mechanics, and a real sense of immersion in the Star Wars universe. While this game could have been a worthy successor to the KOTOR title, it was unfortunately butchered and rushed out the door before it was completed.

The graphics and gameplay are pretty much identical to KOTOR 1, which isn't a bad thing at all. A few gameplay improvements were introduced, such as the ability to "influence" your companions. This is an excellent idea, though it was poorly implemented and doesn't really make much of a difference. Anyway, you can expect the game to play about the same, and if you enjoyed the turn based strategic combat of the original game, you'll have plenty of opportunities for more carnage, though you'll still have the 'missing lightsaber' problem for a goodly portion of the game.

The plot, however, is another story entirely. While it would admittedly have been hard to live up KOTOR 1's high standard, it seems like this game's plot would have been good, perhaps not great, but certainly good enough to justify the purchase...if only it had been completed. Apparently the development team was forced to cut much of the game's content just to meet their deadline, and believe me, it shows. Basic exposition, necessary to understand what's going on and why you're doing what you're doing was left on the cutting room floor. Just to give you one example, early in the game, it's clearly explained that if a certain event happens, your character will die. Later on, when that event happens, you are left unscathed, with absolutely no explanation given. Most of the plot just doesn't make sense--there's little coherence, plot holes are big enough to fly the Ebon Hawk through, and the ending is one of the biggest disappointments I've ever encountered in a video game. I kept waiting for the shocking event or revelation that would cleverly alter my view of what was happening and would make me care, but it never happened. This game is just a mess.

Then there are the bugs. And there are many, many bugs. Thankfully, hard crashes were rare, but certain side-quests were broken, or could be broken if you performed certain actions out of their intended sequence. The dialog trees were often humorously contradictory--one character's name would be accidentally substituted for another, gender would be confused, etc. I encountered one bug where I could gain an infinite amount of influence with one of my party members by just repeating the same conversation over and over again. The list goes on, but my patience doesn't. I have come to expect that programs as complex as modern games will have bugs, but by the time the game is released commercially, I expect those bugs to be minor and hard to find. That's sadly not the case with KOTOR 2.

In the end, I can't recommend this game to anyone. If you just want the action, then fire up KOTOR 1 and go for some mindless slaughter, and if you want a decent plot and engrossing role playing experience, then look elsewhere, because you won't find them here.

Sweet sequal

Ok I bought and beat KOTOR about a hundered times and then did the same thing with this game. THen I bought both of them back lol. This game is very well done and very very fun and one of the most enjoyable games ive ever played and I HATE RPG'S!! The 1st game had a bit better storyline I admit but the characters in this game as well as some other tweaks make it good (plus the storyline isnt horrible here just not as good).

Overall, I thought that KOTOR II was very good. I thought the graphics were better than KOTOR I, and I thought that the gameplay was better than the first as well. I have played KOTOR II through 2 times, once as dark side, and once as light side. The plot makes much more sense the second time through. I think that it is designed to set up for KOTOR III, which, if it does come out, will make KOTOR II that much better, kind of like The Empire Strikes Back (stuck in between). A great buy if you like RPG, and an excellent buy if you like Star Wars.

KOTOR II is Only A Makeover to the Former

While KOTOR II is a great game that is full of action as well as plot, the game does not feel very original and is chock full of glitches. With that said, the actual game itself is still amazing. The game is massive with tons of worlds to explore and enemies to fight. Living the life of a jedi or sith and choosing your path down the dark or light side is very fun and the game actually recquires a keen mind to say the right words. Starwars fans, KOTOR fans, and RPG buffs, this game is a great one, however, be prepared for the glitch here and there!

This is what happens when a title switches developers

The original Knight of the Old Republic was created by Bioware, a company which any RPG fan knows well. Bioware wins awards like most of the other game houses release games. The secret is simple, combine the best game developers you can get you grubby mits on, then throw in a healthy supply of fanboyism. Bioware loves these stories. They love D&D and Star Wars, so they get it. This is what made the first Knights of the Old Republic so darn good. The game balanced gameplay with story giving us a rich and interesting look at the Star Wars universe, which after the extreme disappointment of the new movies was needed.

With all that said I can say that Knights of the Old Republic II is a good game. It has its good points as well as its bad ones. The gameplay is mostly a direct copy of the original and since there was nothing really broken there, not fixing it was good. The graphics were tweaked a bit and things looked a little better. The story, however, was horrible. This is the kind of thing that happens when a new development company takes over. The balance which made the first game so good is gone. The plot in the sequel is off, a lot. It sucks. I didn't like it at all and I gave it several chances to impress me. I don't know, maybe I'm deficient in some way. The critics act like this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think they need their heads examined.

All in all, this game is not bad. If you didn't play the first game you'll love this one. If you did play the first game, go get something else, this game will not do it for you.

Dissapointed :-(

Just to let the viewers know, I have a "Xbox". After playing the first KOTOR. Which was excellent. I was expecting this one to be the same or even better. They did not finish takening out the bugs and finishing with the final touch ups. It keeps locking up when you use the Workbenches ( for upgrades) on the planet Peragus. Also it would skip certain movies. So I finally took mine back to the store and exchanged with a newer/updated one. It still had problems, but enough that I could finish the story. You can see they were too much in a hurry to have it released on time (very big mistake). FYI: Next time if it is not ready for release then wait til it is. You really disappointed many Star Wars Fans. I have been a fan since the 70's.

Doesn't measure up to KOTOR 1

I did enjoy playing this game, but I found it to not nearly be as fun as KOTOR 1.

The story was less compelling, and while the new force powers and ability to affect your comerades' alignment is nice, the game just felt more hollow as a whole.

My biggest gripe is that the ending was a SEVERE disappointment. After all the time you put into the game, don't you deserve a little more (Like, say, in KOTOR 1?)

My God!

FOr the love of god, this game blows! I heard this KOTOR 2 game was the best. I hated it! These guys are telling me "you need to flush out a near-by console without have slice throught destonon hydroxolyant. After that, reach the Fanta Base at ground level 16 grey, you must activate the sylington elevator and pick the Anti-screw hand held device" What the crap!?!? I needed the game too make more sense! It's like trying to understand a Thailandic person who's having a seizure! THis game is crap! I returned it. THe gameplay is sad too. All you do is see your little character standing there, shooting his crappy laser and missing every fricking time! ITs like watching Ray Charles hit a retarded boy with a bat! KOTOR gets a 1/5. Game of the year my ass...
