A Great Arcade-Style Game!!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 12 / 12

Crazy Taxi is basically a driving game in which you play as one of four different taxi drivers trying to rack-up the most money in fares as possible. You pick someone up, drive them to their destination, drop them off, and repeat. Bonus money is given for getting a passenger to thier destination quickly and for performing trick maneuvers along the way. Fare money is lost if you don't arrive at the passenger's destination in the allotted time.

This game is almost an exact copy of the arcade game. In addition to the city in the arcade game, you also have another city to drive thru (recklessly). You also have a bunch of simplistic mini-games (called Crazy Box) which allow you to fine-tune your skills. You can play by the same rules as the arcade game (where playtime varies depending on your skill-level) or you can play a 3, 5, or 10 minute game. Individual and overall high scores are recorded.

My wife and I find this game highly addictive. It's a great game to play when you don't have a lot of time (or don't want to do a lot of thinking). I love my Nascar Heat 2002 and Twisted Metal: Black games (both of which I highly recommend), but they require a longer playtime and I rarely have that much time to sit and play them.

The only changes that I would like them to make to the game are:

1) Remove the vehicle pop-up. It's weird to look down a long stretch of road seeing no cars then all of sudden they're there (this does not affect gameplay in any way).

2) I should be allowed to kick a passenger out of my car once I reach the point where I know that I'm not going to get them to their destination in time (and lose their fare). After all, they see to have no problem jumping out of my speeding taxi when their time's up.

Again...this is an arcade-style game. Don't expect this game to feel like a realistic driving simulation--that's not what the manufacturer intended it to be. I'm not sure why some people get bored with it so easily. We've played for several hours and still haven't moved on to the second city or completed the Crazy Box mini-games yet. I don't see myself getting bored with it anytime soon. There's always that high-score to beat and new tricks to master... If you're concerned about the longevity of the game, rent it first and play for 30 to 60 minutes (try the 10 minute game) before buying it.

This is a great game!!! Give it a try!!!

Fun game, but gets old quick

After hearing how great this game is, I bought it on the day of the release. Yup, I have to admit that it was fun driving anywhere around the city (even subways and water) to pick up/drop off passengers. The computer comments were pretty funny and there was no slowdown when number of items were on the screen at the same time.

But after about 2 hours of playing, I realized how disappointed I was with this game. As others have eluded to, it gets old driving around the same city. There was no drivers or cars to unlock. This makes longevity of the game questionable. Also the fact that there's no 2 player mode made me cringe. I'm not sure if the 4 characters had any differences between them either (though I heard they're suppose to).

Though this was a fun game, I ended up returning it after few days. If you're looking for a fun driving game, you might want to pass on this one and try Rumble Racing instead. Now there's an idea - incorporate Rumble Racing's unlock track/car feature on Crazy Taxi (or have a new track add-ons or something to keep the game going after a week or so).

Just like Crazy Taxi

Yes, it is true. There are no updates to this game from the DC(Dreamcast) version, in graphics, sound, music, etc. But it is still nice to have a port from the DC of one of the most addictive and funnest video games to our very own Playstation 2. For those who experienced problems, like the background scenery suddenly disappearing, I think they had a defective copy. I never experienced such problems, and the game ran pretty smoothly. Such is the case for some other people who purchased Crazy Taxi.

The only thing that gets slightly annoying is that your car skids a bit. I don't know, maybe it adds to the playability of the game. Otherwise I think Acclaim did a good job porting the game from DC to PS2.

Frankly, I enjoyed this game, even though its exactly the same as it was on Dreamcast. It's still as fun, as addictive, as crazy as it was a year ago.

Wahoo! A good cure for road rage!

Crazy Taxi is a very fun take on the typical driving-type game. Fairly easy to control, fairly simple to master, this game is fun, fun, fun! You choose one of four taxi-driver characters and start picking passengers up and delivering them to their destinations. Don't worry if other cars are in your way, just bump into them, or better yet, launch yourself off a ramp to get ahead of them (or, if you think it might get you there quicker, try driving underwater or over grass). The punk sound track adds to the frenetic race to get people where they want to go in a San Francisco-like environment complete with recognizable retail stores (Levi-Strauss, Tower Records, KFC... hmm, product placement?).

Crazy Taxi includes several play modes that have different rules, depending on which you choose. There is also a training/practice mode that is quite challenging.

Parents of young kids: some of the passengers are verbally abusive if you don't get them where they want to go, and some cursing can be heard.

Everyone needs to calm down.

Folks, the game isn't even out yet. Yes, it's been out for Dreamcast for over a year. No one is disputing that. The reason Crazy Taxi is coming out for PS2 ***now*** because Sega only made the decision to port their games to PS2 (and later fold their hardware division) in the last few months, and I'm sure Acclaim has been hard at work on the port ever since.

The reason there are no new features/characters is a simple one: Sega's agreement with Acclaim states that the PS2 port will not have anything above and beyond the DC version, except in terms of tweaks to graphics/sound quality.

And remember that most of the screenshots that are out there are of pre-release alpha and beta builds - and are NOT the finished product!

Personally, I am looking forward to buying this game when it comes out for PS2... As for CT2, I'm sure Acclaim is probably working on that port already, in order to have it to market by the holidays. It wouldn't surprise me.

well, this game is about the biggest letdown and an extremely poor first purchase for my ps2. the graphics are great and the gameplay is fun, so why the poor rating? well, mainly because the fun factor runs out after roughly a half hour of gameplay. my main beef with the whole thing is that there are only two courses and there are absolutely no variations on repeated play. youd think the developers would at least impliment a random person generator so that your customers are in different locations, but apperently not. the level designs are fairly well laid out, but neither are particularly big, and since you find the same customers in the same locations wanting to be delivered to the same spot over and over, it gets old quick.

"but i heard the gameplay is addicting!" you say. well, your right, and this is another factor working against the game. while youre bored out of your mind and ferrying the same ... customers back and forth, little things begin to annoy you; like the terrible voice acting, for one. this game originated in japan, and the american voice actors seem to be trying to copy the sterotypically high voice of women used in japanese games. everytime you pick up a girl you will be treated to an annoyingly high-pitched sound resembling a ... eight year old midget.

in addition to this, the catch-phrases spouted out by your character and the characters you encounter becomes increasingly more trite, calculating, stupid-sounding and (of course) annoying. i say "trite" and "calculating" because, unlike in real life where a person would say "hey, hows it goin'" or "hello", when a person enters your car they will immediatly shout out "YOURE COOL!" or "WOW YOUR COOL!" or "THIS CARS COOL!" etc etc etc. its as if the game is, in actuality, trying to make the person playing the game feel cool. in truth, this makes sense because the majority of this games audience will be consisting of pre-teen, friendless and lonely geeks. the "friendless" part is amplified by the fact that there is no multiplayer, which could have been the games saving grace. and hearing your driver spout out "SHUT UP, MOVE YO' ..." for the nth time quickly wears out its welcome.

while this most likely dosnt bother other people, i consider it insulting: the game is sloppily, lazily and half-... slapped together simply to motivate you to go out and buy stuff. this is the only explination for the lackluster gameplay, since all of the locations consist of "kentucky fried chickens" and "filas" and "original levis stores". one has to wonder how much acclaim got paid by all its sponsers for this dissapointing peice of .... im sure theyre laughing all the way to the bank.

"arcade gameplay" is no excuse for a repetative, half-finished and manuplative game.

Want to release some stress? Play this game!

Man, do I love going home to this game after a long hard day at work. I am not a gory-violent person and Grand Theft Auto is not my style. I'd rather pull up Crazy Taxi on the ol' PS2 and go at it. You can drive all around the city and just have a lot of fun knocking things over and having people running and screaming to get out of your way. You can drive into the ocean and just idle on the sea floor while the tropical fish swim around your car. You can collide with cable cars, drive by Kentucky Fried Chicken and knock all the diners off their outside tables, drive up the front lawn of a massive church and see the minister run for his life, or you can just wreak major havoc on the city traffic. No one will die, they manage to move out of your way fast enough...bust just barely!

Not an overly-sophisticated game, and it does get repititious if you take it seriously...but it is a hell of a lot of fun otherwise. Even better when you have people over to your house and you all compete to see who can rack up the highest fares in 3, 5, or ten minutes. Hysterically funny with a bunch of people, but a let-down if you're alone...unless you're stressed like me and you need to let it out with some good, clean fun. No blood and guts here, folks.

... Like I said, don't take it too seriously.

HAVE FUN!

One of the better PS2 games out there

First off, the problems encountered by "PatsFan18" are not representative of this product, as a whole. He, most certainly, has a flawed disc and/or a faulty PS2 unit.

Crazy Taxi was an extremely fun arcade game and the transition here is a pretty good one. You get the classic arcade level, along with the original four drivers. Contrary to other reviews, though, you DO get more. For one, a second level is added to the game, featuring some pretty interesting landmarks (you can drive along train tracks, through the city sub-way, and over a draw bridge, for one). There is also another bonus game, "Taxi Cube", which sees your favorite Cabbie partaking in various obstacle-style-courses. These levels are fun and do break up the monotony of the two ordinary levels.

As far the the specifics of the conversion are concerned, pop-up is not a great problem, there don't seem to be any collision problems, and the game trucks along at highly impressive frame rates, even in the midst of the highly insane action (it's not called "Crazy" Taxi for nothing). The sound is great and all of the songs from the arcade are present here.

The ultimate replayability of this game may come into question; after all, it IS only two levels long. Further more, it seems like a compilation release of Crazy Taxi's 1 & 2 (perhaps on a DVD format PS2 disc) would have been more logical for Sega, Acclaim, and Sony. But, Crazy Taxi is ultimately meant to be one thing and one thing only: fun. Luckily, it delivers in spades. The game IS quite fun and the PS2 conversion offers just enough extras to make this game worthwhile. Plus, it's just plain cool to see a SEGA game on the Playstation.

Cool

After playing this and Simpsons: Road Rage I have to say that Road Rage is much better. Crazy Taxi is a really cool game and is lots of fun to play but it gets really old after a while. The same people, the same music, the same towns, and you don't get anything special if you do good. In the Simpsons: Road Rage you have to earn enough money to unlock characters and different stages. It adds weeks of replay value where Crazi Taxi is good for a day or two. Out of a perfect 5.0 here's what I give it's

graphics: 4.5
control: 4.5
sound: 4.5
fun factor: 3.0

THIS GAME IS THE BOMB! It's like the best arcade game ever since Pac-Man. I live in Brooklyn New York and there is this place there called "Circle 2." Well, it's a video store and there I played Mervel Vs. Capcom. It got pretty boring soon so as I left I saw this racing. I played it for several minutes and as soon as you know it, my 3 bucks in quarters were gone in record breaking time!
When my dad bought me PS2 the only game in my head was CRAZY TAXI, CRAZY TAXI! Then the next thing I knew, he bought me Crrazzyy Taxxiii. It was soooo fun I played it 7 hours straight. I almost played it for 8 hours but my mom said no more. But there' always tomorrow.
Hey to all dem people thinking of getting Crazy Taxi, but it! It's worth it! Trrrusst ME! ;)
