the graphics are great. the gameplay is nice. the adherence to the new school of +5-rings-are-laying-around-everywhere-D&D is fast and loose and a little annoying.
it's also, as others have said, a really good 2 player game.
it's way too short though. beating a game in 8 hours the first time you play it, on the regular difficulty level, is way too short. and it's the first game i've ever had since Tomb Raider III that seized up the console in mid gameplay and required flipping the power switch to restart.
it's a little more involving, and quite a bit prettier, than Gauntlet but not that much different. where are the Vagrant Stories and the Parasite Eves for the PS2? is Final Fantasy X it for now?
the whole point of RPGs is that you don't blow through them. and so, Baldur's Gate, is a bit of a failure. just when you're getting really invested in your character and finally picking up a very small subset of some powerful abilities, the game ends.
treat it like a rental and you'll have a great time.
Greatness

I found this game really wonderful and I played it for two weeks straight playing for hours a day. But the problem was it ended suddenly and was really easy to kill the end person. It was the best game ever the first time but once you win it is really boring and tedious. You don't have a lot of choices with your characters and there aren't that many side missions. I would recommend renting, winning it then returning it to the store. Or burning it. I play Baldur's Gate on the pc and it isn't nearly as interesting and fun as that. So in short, its marvelous the first time you play it but then gets boring.
Cooperative Play Rocks!!! But I (We) want more!!!

This is definitely a classic for the PS2. Although a hack and slash type of fantasy quest, its real strength lies in the nature of its cooperative mode. After buying the PS2, I was dismayed when I found that there just isn't many games out there where two people can play together without having to be concerned about competition and blowing each other away.
Don't take my word for it. Go ahead and ask my wife about it. She wasn't interested in video games at all before I introduced her to this little gem. Teamwork is the name of our game: she hits them with the fireball while I peg them with the shock arrows...And now that I've got her addicted, our high just can't be sustained. There is absolutely no other fantasy type game on the Playstation of this caliber that requires this kind of special cooperation....are you listening video game programmers?!!!
like Diablo, but better-looking

This game is GREAT to play with a close friend. I've been playing with my roommate and we take turns being the sorceress and the dwarf. This is a good combination, since the sorceress can alternate between spells and a bow, while the dwarf rushes into the fray with a big axe and lots of armor. The action is great. The graphics are really stunning (esp. water effects). The one annoying thing is that you have to go sell and buy things a lot, which is inherently boring in a video game, and since the characters have different "charismas" which determines prices, there's a certain logic to having the most charismatic character (in our case the sorceress) sell and buy everything. Given that she can't carry much, this means a lot of dropping and picking things up, which gets REALLY repetitive. If you didn't mind the commerce in Diablo, this is pretty similar so you'll be o.k.
Couple of tips:
If you play with the dwarf, save up points to get whirlwind attack as soon as possible. This is a way to attack multiple enemies that really makes the game much more fun, since the dwarf is kind of limited to hacking and slashing. Also, always raise your strength when possible. this helps you both carry more and hurt your enemies more
With the sorceress, skip the following spells to save pts for the better ones: acid arrow, snowblind, and fireball. These spells are both ineffective and boring to use. Trust me, the other spells are worth the wait.
Fun, if only for a short while.

This is a wonderful game that is far too short in duration. My wife and I were literally addicted to this game for three days after we bought it. Unfortunately, those same three days were all it required for us to beat it. We are not regular game players, so I can only imagine how quickly some other experienced players might finish it (five hours, maybe?). That is the game's only flaw, however.
Multiplayer Goodness...

"Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance" is an excellent game, it's as simple as that. The action is intense and satisfying, the graphics are some of the best available for the PS2, and the production values are just top notch. The storyline is a bit underdeveloped, though, and the RPG stuff has been "dumbed down" in the assumption that console gamers don't like depth as much as PC gamers - but these points lose their luster if you have a friend to play with. "Dark Alliance" is easily one of the best two-player games available, as it allows you and an ally to hack your way through the campaign together. More games should offer cooperative multiplay if it's this much fun. If only there were a few more characters to pick from (you only get three, assuming you don't count the unlockable Drizzt Do'Urden - awesome!) and a little more depth to the roleplaying, this game would be the best available for the PS2. As it stands, it's still a classic.
Final Score: B+
My favorite for PS2 so far

In my opinion, this game was great for someone who likes adventure, easy controls, and an overall awesome game. The graphics amazed me the first time I played, and the multiple players provide more than one adventure. The secret character and level are also challenging and exciting, and I can't wait for the next game in the series to come out. You don't have to have played the previous games to understand and do well (I hadn't), and if you did, I know that you can import a hero from the last game, which makes it even more like the real game of Dungeons and Dragons. If you're looking for a great all-around adventure game, this is a must have for PS2.
The Best Game Ever!

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is not an average, boring RPG game. It is almost a complete hack and slash game that is very fun to play. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance has great graphics, sound, gameplay, and a wonderful storyline to offer. This is one of the best games I have ever played for the PS2.
WAY Cool!

This game is awsome! I don't really like RPG games (as they are boring and have a slow moving plot). But Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a cool RPG game title because it is fun and has good gameplay. Oh! And the plot is good too.
A Great Game!
