Great Game. Very similiar to Diablo II.

If you like hack & slash dungeon crawling games like Diablo, then you'll like this game. It is the first game of this style for the Playstation 2.

In this game, you play as one of three characters. You will be given quests by other people and creatures. These quests take you thru dungeons, sewers, caves, castles, woods, and mountain paths and usually involve killing a boss enemy or finding specific objects. Along the way, you must kill (or run from) enemies while picking up items (dropped by enemies, found in treasure chests, barrels, etc.) that may be useful to you or that may be sold. Fighting is in real-time (not turn-based as in Final Fantasy). As you complete quests and kill enemies, you gain experience. This experience allows you the change your character's attributes and learn new skills/spells. There are numerous types of weapons and armor to be bought or found during the game. As the enemies in the game get tougher, your experience and improved weapons/armor allow you to still put up a good fight.

The graphics and audio are amazing. The movement of water as you walk thru it and the movement of the leaves on trees as the wind blows shows the level of graphic detail that they gave the game. Also, the detail on many of the creatures in the game is outstanding. Voices and music are great. As you walk thru the woods, you hear coyotes howling in the distance. As you walk on the mountain path, you hear chunks of ice falling in the distance. Controls are simple and intuitive. Every button on the controller may be used during a game, but you'll find yourself using them like a pro in just a matter of minutes. I really like that fact that my character can change between a melee weapon (such as a sword) and a range weapon (such as a bow) during battle with the simple push of a button.

Gameplay is great and is almost identical to that of Diablo II. Unfortunately, the game is too short. Your saved games tell you how long you've been playing. On the Easy difficulty setting, I completed the game in about 12 hours. However, if you enjoy the game, you'll probably want to play each of the three characters and take at least one of your characters thru the three difficultly levels. Completing the game opens up something called the gauntlet where you have 15 minutes and one life to defeat all the various types of creatures (not too easy). Completing the game also opens up an Extreme difficulty level. Completing the game on the Extreme level opens up a fourth character. Playing a two player game is also a blast. It's just like the one player game, but allows two players to work cooperatively.

Don't let the shortness of the game keep you from trying it. I feel that this is one the best games for the Playstation 2 right now.

D&D + Diablo = PS2 dynamite!!!

Although it's set in the Forgotten Realms D&D universe, BG:DA features a gameplay style closer to Diablo than the Baldur's Gate games for the PC. I loved both series, so that makes me happy. And those who worried that BG:DA would be a tepid port of the PC games, rest assured that it is an all new, all different adventure.

The graphics effects and sounds are fantastic, and the soundtrack is as good or better. It's almost worth getting this game just to show off what the PS2 can do.

A few caveats:

- The game could be a bit longer, but the three character choices offer decent replay value. Still, it will leave you wanting more.

- It helps to have a handle on how to use the gamepad. The controls aren't as simple as the point-and-click interface of Diablo and the original Baldur's Gate, but they are well designed.

- Like Diablo, BG:DA is more of an RPG-lite experience than the original Baldur's gate. You only get to choose from three characters that are mostly pre-determined. It's still D&D enough to please me.

- Also like Diablo, the hack and slash action can get a little repetitive in spots. When it looks and sounds as good as it does, I don't mind.

BG:DA is a different experience than the original Baldur's Gate games for the PC, but it's a good one. And you gotta love the gelatinous cube! Definitely recommended.

Amazing graphics, killer story line and countless hours of awesome game play. This game rocks and is easy to learn!

Great Game. But why make it so "Diablo" similar???

This game seems simply amazing. It has everything a real RPG should and must have. Great graphics, sound, gameplay, story line, controls and it's just simply fun to play (especially with a friend in 2ppls co-op quests). What the heck, just one "water movement" effect you will see in the game will make you jump and run across pools and lakes for quite some time.
The only few things that are a bit disappoinitng:
1. Seems that concept of the game is way too similar to Blizzard's "Diablo" game. They made it look differently but characters spells, skills and even storyline are somewhat similar to "Diablo".
2.There should be more characters to choose from. 3 just isn't enough.
3. Seems that archer or sorceress are slightly worse than dwarf. On higher levels of the game it seems arrows and spells don't do as much damage as they should. And it's still much easier to go and slice your enemies with good old mellee weapons.
4. 2 ppls co-op is very fun but it would be alot better if you could play 3ppls co-op, since there are 3 different characters, it would make more sense.
5. Those "jelly" looking monsters leave impression that creators got really lazy and didn't feel like creating more of a "quality" looking enemies.
Other than that, this game seems almost perfect and is a MUST HAVE for anyone who has PS2 and respects RPG games.

Graphics: 5 / 5
Sound: 5 / 5
Gameplay: 5 / 5
Entertainment: 4.5 / 5 (single player), 5 / 5 (2ppls Co-op)
Overall: 5 / 5

Dark Alliance Shines Brightly On PS2

This game is a testament to programmers who take the time to craft a quality product. It shines in all areas: Gameplay, graphics, sound, control and replay value. Texture work is sharp, characters are highly detailed with lots of polygons, and the environments are all fantastically detailed. Combat is genuinely fun, something that cannot be said for all RPG's. Each of the 3 characters you play has a unique quality, adding lots of replay value. This game truly captures the essence of the Dungeons and Dragons world. My short list of complaints include the wish for more customization of each character (can't roll own stats-bummer)and a little bit of party management would have been nice. These are minor quibbles, however, when you consider the whole package. I have played D&D pen and paper style for over 15 years and have always wanted a quality console version. I have waited over two years for this game to see the light of day, and my patience was rewarded. I completely recommend this game, especially for those of you who like D&D.

Baldurs gate Rocks!

Pros: great grapics, great sound, fun to play, simple to learn.
a true classic game for the PS2 in Diablo Fashion
Cons: only one i can even think of is the fact that if you play this you WILL want part 2 which is a little costly but if you buy or own this be sure to buy Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 2 (PS2)
its an adventure spanning 3 chapters (yes that may seem short but the game can take from 10 hours to several days to beat depending on if you play little here and there or blow through it all at once) but honestly i used to own this and had regretted selling it now i have it for the 3rd time and BG DA2 and that makes this worth it especally the fact that you can play as drizzt and also can IMPORT your character into PART 2 making replay value high! its even more fun with a friend *except the platforms that you must jump across in the first chapter doing this 2 player can be annoyingly difficult just have your friend take a dive off the side there till you get through it its the Only Hard Part) but the battles are hack n slash diablo esque style fights andand the bosses *last one made quite an impresion* are awesome and well voiced by the talented voice actors 5 star all the way and worth every penny especally if you liked Champions of Norrath or Champions at Arms also sweet games.

Awsome Game

So I keep reading that Baldurs Gate is too short and beaten too quickly. Not on your life it isn't. If you just run through the game on Normal or Hard mode, sure it can be completed in a few days, BUT...
Once you beat the game for the first time, from the "Start New Game" screen, you have a new option of playing "The Gauntlet." This is a 15 minute timed mission that you play as Drizzit the Dark Elf. Once you beat this secret mission, it opens up a new option to play the game in "Extreme" mode. Trust me, the monsters are MUCH harder, the magic items are much cooler and it takes quite a bit longer to pass through the tasks you breezed through before. In fact, you MUST import a previously saved character into the game (so don't save over or delete them) as a 1st level player would be chomped by the first rat. THEN...once you beat the game with one of the 3 main PCs, you are allowed to import Drizzit into the game and play with him.
I am on my 4th play through Baldurs Gate and it is still a blast. Don't waltz through the 1st play and toss the game aside as you will be missing some of the best parts. Trust me, it gets extreme.

Excellent Game!

I'm trying to think of something bad to say about this game, but precious little is coming to mind. I think the thing I like most is that two people can play it, which I've come to find is dismayingly rare in RPGs. It's nice after a mutual bad day for my girlfriend and I to fire up the PS2 and kill off some big uglies, and all the more fun to do so together. The graphics were incredible, way beyond the cubical ... you see in too many other games, such as Alon Dar (which stinks as far as we can deterimine).

About the only things I didn't like were the fact that it ended all too soon, with not a clue as to when the next one is being released, and the final combat which seemed rather lame in light of the rest of the game. Frankly, several other of the big uglies we fought were far more of a challenge than the last one. Oh, one other problem is the saves. It's too easy to screw up and overwrite a saved game and to lose the game you'd worked so hard to build, so we finally just dedicated one memory card to this game alone after three missions got sent to data heaven by accident. That card remains in the box with the disc, so it doesn't get lost. From what I gather, the characters we built should be able to import into future versions of Baldur's Gate, and I don't want to lose them.

My girlfriend and I went through the whole thing as the elf and archer, but it's also a lot of fun to play alone. The dwarf is kind of an ugly-looking little troll, but is a tough customer in toe-to-toe fighting. I like his whirlwind attack, and the bull-rush is amusing anyway. The elf, frankly, is a cutie-pie ... a certain appeal to red-blooded men everywhere even if she is just ethereal microchippery.

We found that it's best to build the archer's strength and the elf's charisma, and let her collect the gold and buy whatever weapons the archer would need as the game progresses. Also, it's best to wait as long as possible to buy the best weapons and armor available, rather than to buy the first upgrades available.

I'm eagerly awaiting Interplay's release of the next Baldur's Gate, which I hope is sooner rather than later. I'm giving it five stars since more stars aren't available. If you only buy one RPG, I'd say go for this one. No question.

Finally a Co-op game

It took a while, but while rummaging through the PS2's greatest hits section me and my girlfriend found this nifty game. I had read great reviews but never got around to purchasing the game. My girlfriend suggested we buy it with the 19.99 price tag. It seemed like a great idea, since I have been looking for a 2 player game to play with her since the PS2 came out.

This game is great, especially if you love the Dungeons and Dragon theme, hack n slash on the PS2 is a lot of fun. The greatest thing was finally having a game I can play with her, I love games and this way I can spend time with her and play at the same time, what a great idea. Baldur's Gate can save your relationship, well at least if she is willing to give it a try. You'll treasure the moments when she screams, "oh my god , rats....uhhhhh... they're huge"

The PS2 and the entire gaming community neet to develop more co-op games, these are a lot of fun, and I always looked forward to those 1 or 2 hours where me and my girlfriend would plop in front of the PS2 in save the world from monsters.

I look forward to Dark Alliance 2.
