Star Wars fans, rejoice! With Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic, you get a complex RPG that sets you back a few thousand years before the Star Wars world we know and love.
First, gameplay. This is sort of like Baldur's Gate / Morrowind where you wander through the worlds, have various options when talking with people, have a variety of main quests, side quests, minigames and more.
Based on the Star Wars role playing game, your character gains experience, builds skills and even becomes more "good" or "evil" as you go - all based on your actions in the game. There are relatively simple customizations of your character - male or female, soldier - scout - scoundrel. I love RPGs and found this a good mix of character development with not-overly-difficult complexity for those new to RPGs.
The graphics were reasonably good - not as nice as the Splinter Cell games have spoiled me for, but different planets each have their own look and feel, lights glow, smoke fills up corridors. The music of course was great, all the authentic sounds, music and background ambiance that you've come to expect.
Morrowind set an extremely high bar for 'wide open gameplay' and this doesn't quite come up to that level. There is definitely a main path to play, and despite varying your 'good' or 'evil' level, a lot of the gameplay is the same. Still, it is so involving, complex and varied that this is still a game that can be replayed and enjoyed!
May the Force be with you, budding Jedi.

Amazing, simply amazing. That describes this new xbox game. I am not a gamer by heart, and give most games a brisk 10 mins to prove themselves worthy of joing my video cabinet. Within the few minutes it took to navigate the start up screen, and get a handle on the controls. I was completely hooked!!
I have logged about 15 hours on the game, and HAVE BARELY SCRATCHED THE SURFACE!!! The story is amazingly deep for a video game, and as others have said the score is very cool. I cannot stop playing. I must know what secrets lie just beyond the next door. I have never been so completely hooked on a video game as I have been with KOTOR. You must buy this game! For the die hard RPG'er, or if you are like me, and are just sticking your big toe in the water to see what it's like.
The controls are easy to master, the graphics are very nice, but as EGM said in their latest issue, they could use one more coat of polish, but i will not let that deter me from an otherwise flawless game. The story is just amazing, and seems to be well written with the player's future at the center. The other characters interact with your chosen character flawlessly, and realistically. I cannot say enough good things about this game, and hope that it becomes the next "Must Own" game for the Xbox.
Enjoy it, and May the Force Be With You!!!
Well 53 hours later, and I have beaten the game. WOW!!!! A true Star Wars ending. I must see what the downloadable content is going to look like that Biogames, and Lucasarts have promised. In my opinion with the sweet soundtrack, great visuals, and truly immersive stoeyline. KOTOR is a Must Buy for the Xbox.

I just bought this game about four days ago and I've already played for about 24 hours of game time. I'm new to the whole RPG thing and this game is great because its pretty straight-forward game play and the mysteries and puzzles are both fun and challenging. It reminds me of why I wanted to be a Jedi when I was a kid. Very cool game.
Everything the SW movies should have been and more.

If you're like me and love the universe Lucas created but hate what he actually did with it then KOTOR is most certainly for you. It's basically a hard edge walk through the Star Wars universe and you get to walk through the training of both a Jedi and a Sith. You get lots of freedom ,the characters are all interesting, and your actions really do make a difference in the storyline.
The only game that I can compare to this is Oblivion which is set in a fantasy world. I'd be hard pressed to say which game is better but I would say the storyline in KOTOR is much better.
Luckily KOTOR is compatible with the XBox 360. I say "luckily" because believe it or not, you will find yourself returning to it every now and again. I can't say everyone will like this game but I will say that when I think of Star Wars I think about this game more than I think about the lame movies.
awesome

More engrossing than GTA: Vice City, more options than Madden 2004 and prettier and shinier than a greased up super model, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has it all... including voices by three guys named Rapheal.
When you start out in Knights, you're on the Republican starship the Endar Spire, 2000 years before the events in Episode I. Actually I'm getting ahead of myself. Even before that you get to either choose a character to play as or customize one. You get to calibrate everything from your gender, portrait and skills down to your name. Back to the game..
Before you start on your way to blasting the living hell out of those mean Sith, you hear about a Jedi named Bastila and her vaunted Battle Meditation. You won't really know what that means until later, but it's all part of the game experience.
It's not long before you get 4 more characters in your group and when you, yes YOU, become you're very own Jedi. Horray! But wait, the dark side is trying to get you, and you must resist, unless you like pushing around Wookies and Jawas, you know, just for giggles. Each side has their pirks: On the light side you can heal all of your characters with 100% effiency and all of your skills help out your party. But for the more selfish the dark side offers death dealing Force powers and if you become totally evil, light literally gets sucked away around you and you become very, very pale.
The game's 8 huge levels of Taris, Dantooine, Kashyyk, Mannan, Tantooine, Korriban and two other, more exciting levels give the game it's truely wide open feel. And for those D and D'philes, the battle and armor and weapon systems are all based on the famous RPG so even the most rudimentary nerd can actually understand the game. The game is so wide open that you can beat it from anywhere between 12 to 50 hours, depending on if you do all the side missions, which I suggest you do.
The only problem I had was a small one: The villians weren't really too difficult. Don't get me wrong, there were times when two of the three characters died and I was at half health, but fighting endless Kath hounds does get a little tedious. But when you get to the last level and you're picking off Dark Jedi one by one like it's nobodys business, then you can truely have the title of Ultra Super Cool Bad Ass of the Galaxy.
A great Star Wars RPG

This is a great game, be warned though that the combat is turn based so if you like the twitch finger action of Jedi Knight II you'd best wait for Jedi Acadamy in November, on the other hand if you like turn based play (the turns take aprox 6 seconds each and can be played in real time or with a pause at the end of each turn) this game is a must. If your unsure your best bet would be to rent the game first, the inital part may be dialog heavy but keep playing, the action will show up soon!
played a lot of RPG and Adventure games - this is the best!

If you love PC adventure games ( from Myst to Syberia, etc) and you enjoy RPGs as well, this is the game for you. It really has surpassed all of my expectations and, at the time of this writing, it is honestly the best adventure game I have ever played. I'm still amazed at how long I've been able to play this game. If the game was over several hours ago of game time, I would have still thought it the best game ever, yet thankfully it still hasn't ended yet! Everything fits together so nicely- the overall plot, the side tasks you have to perform, the character development, the graphics, the sound... all just perfect. Just buy the game, you will not be disappointed (unless of course you are looking for some first person shooter type of game..yawn:).
Totally worth my money!!

This game is the best. Choose your path between light and dark, become ruler of the Sith or save the Republic - find your character's true identity. I can't stop creating files! This game rocks - again, it is the best!!

closer to 4.5. Its one of the better RPG's ive seen in awhile. Even though it is setup like an rpg, it looks like a tomb raider type of game. (graphically). What is really cool about this game is you can choose the light side, or the darkside path to go. If you want to be good or evil, choice is yours. According to the book (even though I havent tried it yet) If you choose the darkside, I guess your characters appearence will change too as you get "darker". I've only tried the lightside.
This is a good game, probably one of the best RPG's out right now. Even though it is pretty cool, and has consumed alot of my time, I have nit picks:
(1)the price: maybe if it was 10 dollars less it would be a happoer buy, i think this about alot of the new games.
(2)Graphics - really good, but, xbox can make breath taking graphics, and there really is no new teritory covered here in that depart, like someone else mentioned, maybe PS2 graphics.
(3)TOO much dialog (ONE OF MY BIGGEST COMPLAINTS) I know, its an rpg, its supposed to have lots of dialog, but i think its overkill. For example, you have to keep talking with your party members ever so often just to maintain relations with them, this is stupid! plus when you do talk to them, they tell you 20 paragraphs of information Less yack'n and more action!!
(4) Only able to hold 2 other party members besides yourself. Most rpg alow big partys of diverse characters, you only got 3
(5) even though you can play this game 3-4 times and have different sequences, or dialog played to you, even choose more than one path, but in the end, the game acts like it plays on a line, its no a truely free world, goals are set into play, not as spred out as like Ultima
(6) Lacking ability to ask town citizens to join your party / attack them - It seems liek each citizen is there jsut to speak with you, only certain characters with join you, or fight you (which goes back to what i said on 5)
