When I started to play this game I was so amazed! I have never played a game like this before in my whole life. They made it so real that when I was playing this game I was so surprised how they made the sceneries, how they made those mini games you can play, and how you can talk to everybody. There's so much stuff you can do in this game it's unbelieveable. I especially like how they let you pick out your person and what they can posses. I probablly haven't even done 1\10 of the stuff you can do on the game, I've probablly played for 4 hours so far and most likely I haven't evn came close of getting off the 1st WORLD! I've been doing the stuff they have been telling me to but most of the time I've been getting sidetracked doing mini-games, talking to the locals, and buying equipment. What I thought what was really cool was the different languages aliens spook, I was very impressed. This is one of the funnest games I have ever played in my LIFE!!!
Xbox needs to give up on RPGs...

I'm sorry to say this, but this game is pathetic, and the level of fame that developer BioWare has gained over it really saddens me. Now, I'll admit that I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan (read: I saw one movie when I was eight), but I am a huge RPG fan, and this game plummets far below my expectations. I will describe my experience with the game, and hopefully you will choose to pass it by and skip the agony I went through.
At the start of the game, I was asked to choose my character's appearance, skill point allocation, and basic moveset. Sounds fun and cool, right? That's what I thought, too. Until I realized that every character model was blocky and pseudo-realistic (you know, that weird, pale, supposed-to-look-human-but-really-doesn't look), the skill-point system was convoluted and confusing to anyone who isn't a hardcore Dungeons and Dragons player, and choosing my moves was so difficult and frustrating that in the end, I didn't even know which ones I had. Creating the character took an hour, and I didn't feel at all satisfied after I finished.
Once I started the actual game, things only got worse. I headed to my first battle, expecting a standard turn-based system at the least, and an innovative action/RPG blend at the most. I got neither. Instead, I was greeted a bizarre mess. In fact, this combat system was so strange and awkward that I don't think I could even describe it. All I know is that, first off, my character was somehow moving on its own, and second, the commands I entered didn't seem to effect what happened onscreen at all.
After making my way through several battles, by way of random button mashing and liberal use of medpacks (that was the easiest way to do it, and seemed to have the same result as trying to concentrate and strategize), I met my first party member. What happened after that just plain scared me. First, the voiceovers made me want to both laugh and scream. Secondly, while the horrendous voice is grating your ears, you have to look at a disturbing close-up of the character's face as he's talking. And finally, THE FACE DOESN'T CHANGE. His expression stayed exactly the same throughout the entire conversation, and this happened with every single other character I talked to. Freaky.
The final part of the game that I played through was the first city. It was big, with lots of people walking around, going about their lives. This would be cool, if I had known where to go in this massive maze. But did I? Nope. Although my horribly-voiced partner apparently knew the city well, I recieved no guidance from him. Instead, he followed me around, giving me no hints but the instruction to "find Bastilla". By the way, I knew nothing about what Bastilla looked like or where she might be.
After twenty minutes of running around in the maze, talking to random, badly-voiced people, most of whom had mean things to say, I gave up. Maybe people who like Star Wars and D&D will appreciate this, but I just can't. BioWare, quit pretending you're the next great RPG maker and go back to putting your characters in MTV music videos.

First off I will start out as saying I am a STAR WARS junkie . Therefor the release of this game will probably be one of the best days of my life . I say probably because when I first saw this game being tested their were a lot of glitches . However from the screens and new cut sceens that I have seen those wizards at the know famous Bioware have done it again . The color surpasses anything ever seen on a console i.e. Xbox Rulz . The graphics far surpass that of any competiter . This is an all around kick [butt] game and it will be when it is released unless the boys at Biowear realy screw things up before release . Which I am glad to say is not in the geeks reputation , however reputation is reputation I guess you'll just have to find out for yourselfs . This game does have the power to be one of the greatest RPG experiances of all time .
Great roleplaying game with a nice twist.

In order to be immersive, roleplaying games must have a great storyline and Knights of the Old Republic delivers. First it has the great Star Wars universe as a backdrop, excellent voice acting (though the aliens do seem to repeat themselves), you may choose between the light and dark side of the force and a really nice plot twist. The game is quite well polished and has many side quests, several of the boards are quite large and if you try to complete as many side quests with the game on difficult it will probably take a little over 40 hours.
There is a balance problem with jedi characters, they are much more powerful then any of the other characters that can join your group. So much so, that you are allowed 3 people in your party but I was able to finish it with 2 people and on difficult. I imagine if you played with 3 jedi in your group on normal, your party would pretty much slice its way through every encounter on its first try with no need in a change of strategy.
In addition, the developers made many of the other skills your character can develop very useful. Every confrontation did not have to end in violence, as you could force persuade or perhaps use hacking abilities to solve a problem. Most RPGs in comparison tell you to kill this monster and collect reward... but KoTR gives you plenty of options to resolve problems and generally if you resolve it in a peaceful manner your rewards are even larger.
Overall, Bioware continues its fine tradition of high quality role playing games. This is definately the second best game on the XBox.

I bought this game because I LOVE Star Wars, and I LOVE Star Wars Games. I had seen the hype leading up to the game and I thought it looked great. I bought it after searching a few places for it and eagerly put the game in my Xbox. Boy, what a dissapointment. The game looks pretty good, but as far as how much fun it is? Well, let's just say it's about as fun as reading a really bad script on a hot summer day with no air conditioning. I was SO bored by the end of three levels that I simply stopped playing. Basically you run around talking to characters who talk and talk and talk. They tell you their entire life story if you care to sit and listen to it. And when the action finally happens after all the chatter, then there isn't much for you to do. The game actually freezes and says something like, "Enemy sighted. What would you like to do? Engage?" Then you can take as long as you want selecting your weapons that you think will help you fight. When all that is done and if you're still awake or even still care, you hit a button and your character just runs off and fights, usually getting killed in about 10 seconds and all you can do is sit back and watch. I realize this is a role playing game (something I will NEVER buy again) and that you are supposed to assign your character skills, but even that part is boring. The audio is awful....when you switch characters they mumble something like, "I'm here." Why? What's the point? It took me aout 10 times hearing that to figure out what the hell they were saying. The only thing I found interesting in the game is that some of the graphics were good...but I found Splinter Cell and Jedi Knight, Outcast to be FAR better as far as graphics, gameplay, and story.
Save your money or buy a bad novel. Either is preferable to this lame excuse for a "game."
Must own RPG!

XBOX finally has the must own RPG fans have been waiting for. This game is so good it rates buying an XBOX if you don't already own one.
The game starts out with you as a soldier who is a last minute transfer to a doomed ship. From there the game moves through several plot twists and choices that expertly move you toward either the light or dark side.
The cut scenes and cinematics are some of the best I've ever seen. And the dialoge is some of the sharpest in any RPG. If your a Star Wars fan some of it seems like stuff Han Solo would say. I especially recommend taking Jolee on the Korriban quest for some good laughs.
Gameplay is spot-one and done from a 3rd person/over-the-shoulder view. Lightsabre and force power combat are excellent. Fighting is quick yet very controlled (reminds me of a slower Diablo II style). Leveling up is easy, however I recommend manually choosing your force and feat powers. The computer sometimes makes poor choices when you auto-level.
To conclude: Every quest and side quest moves the story along to your ultimate choice of the light or dark side. I played the darkside route and it was great. I got a solid 43 hours of play. The game left me wanting more, but I definately got more than I paid for. This is the way RPGs should be done. 5/5 Stars! MUST OWN!
A great game and better than the last 2 Star Wars films!

Knights of the Old Republic is the best Xbox game since Halo and it in many respects it is an even more enjoyable gaming experience (and I love Halo).
But it's not fair to compare the two games since they are very different types of games. Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is an RPG that allows you to customize your character by gender & appearance. It allows you to explore different planets in the Star Wars universe. You can interact with numerous different characters representing different alien species. You can make decisions that will decide whether you will be on the light side of the force, the dark side or somewhere in between. This kind of freedom is rare in games and you don't have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy this.
As a Star Wars story, KOTOR offers more interesting characters and plot lines than the last two Star Wars films. You will care more about the characters in KOTOR than you ever will about Jar Jar Binks (who thankfully is not in this game) or any of the actors in the recent films.
There's also plenty of action in this game as well. You can wield two light sabers, arm a droid with a flame thrower or a Wookie with a sword. There aren't many outstanding games for the Xbox but this is one of them.

It would be amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing, but the fighting stinks. You just press hit, point to opponent, and the cpu attacks. The storyline is pretty good though. I love Star Wars, but this game wasn't S.W. mterial.
