An amazing RPG with a long storyline

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Needless to say that this game proves that there are good rpgs out there. The story is long in my mind (about 10-13 hours if you know where to go.) Because of its storyline replay value may be cut short. But regardless is a fantastic game.

Darth Malak is the head of an seemingly invincible sith fleet and is on a conquest to exterminate the jedi from existance. As a soldier, scout, or scoundrel it is up to you as your story unfolds and it is up to you to either save the galaxy or conquer it. What will you choose?

Overall a great game with a long storyline.

This game is a very good one. I would highly recommend it to any Star Wars fan. This is the kind of game that gets people who kind of like Star Wars or don't like it at all to start liking it. This game is a combination of many genres. Action, adventure, mystery, and romance. This game is good enough to be better than the sequel. It makes a much larger impact on the Star Wars universe as a whole. You start out as a person who is on a battleship that is being attacked and has no clue what they're doing there. Through help from your companions and going from planet to planet, your mysterious past unfolds ending in a shocking discovery. There are many weapons in this game ranging from simple blasters to powerful lightsabers. You can buy new and improved weapons and armor or upgrade your current ones. You have nine companions that you can have in your party. Each of them with a colorful past just waiting to be unfolded by you. I would bet that most people would not be able to stop playing once they started. What you do in this game shapes the events of the entire galaxy! Follow the path of dark side or light side. Each one will lead to a different ending. But believe me, all of them are shocking and make you want to get the sequel right then and there. Everything you do or say can influence the path you take. For better or for worse. You can become a Jedi Consular, one who is srong in the force but lacks a little in lightsaber combat, a Jedi Guardian, highly skilled with a lightsaber yet not as adept in the force. Or a Jedi Sentinal, a combination of the two. Each of them opens up new possabilities. Interact with different creatures and species such as Wookies and Twileks. Travel to many different planets such as Tatooine and Kashyyk. Learn the secrets that changed the Star Wars universe!

fun for a rpg

fun, lot of game hours, and a sweet story. The lightsabor combat gets boring for me killing the same looking dark jedi. I like how you can be good or evil. Me, I was good the whole time. I also like when you are good but still get darkside powers. Sweet game for 2003.

Choose your path?

I've seen people love this game and hate this game, either there not a star wars fan or they hate the battle system.
I myself love star wars and the battle sysetm in this game.

The battle system is simple yet fun at the same time. You and however many party members you have attack then your enemy attacks.
At first you will hate it or think it's slow but as the game progresses you get many mmore attacks and defenses and will get more involved.
The music is Star Wars. New and old music that everyone will love.
The story as someone said in their review is worthy of being the script of a film. The story is what won this game awards.
It also completely changes weather you follow the dark or light.
The characters your with you come to love and you can talk to them whenever and they have a large wealth and background info to uncover.
The voice acting is also well put together and ingages you more down the path of realism.

I would overall rate this game a 9.7 out of 10
When adding the flaws and good side.
This would be on my top 3 games of all time.

Pros
- Engaging and very great story.
- Great voice work
- Splended music
- Star Wars fans will fall in love
- Large explorable worlds
- Great combat, many weapons and custamizable weapons.
- Long story, game ranges from 20 - 35 hours long. { It took me 26 my first time and my longest 33 - depending on all the side missions you do}

Cons
- Graphics most of the time are fuzzy {unless your playing it on 360}.
- Very, very, very slow load times
- I have beat the game 12 times, 5 dark, 7 light and after you have played through the story on both sides at least twice {4 total} it will get old after you know the story.
- People say that it freezes often, mine hasn't ever but the framerate has slowed down during a large battle.

Overall, I hope my review was helpfull and I believe the game is $20 now and thats great for a game this good.

Excellent immersion into the Star Wars world

This is truly an addictive game. You pick it up thinking "just an hour" and before you know it 3 or 4 hours have gone by. I've completed it 2 times (and am on my third time right now) and it's taken about 85 hours total to complete both times.

The fact that I'm playing it again speaks volumes about how good this game is. You have the option to be a good jedi or evil sith - the neat part is every decision you make will have consequences as to which path you will follow - a unique concept, which made the game more realistic.

The controls were easy to pick up, and the storyline had a surprising twist, to say the least. I just recently got KotOR II, and am looking forward to that, and seeing whether they can come up with any more surprises.

The basic story of this game is you're part of the Republic army who crash lands in an escape pod on the world Taris, together with a Republic soldier named Carth Onassi. Together, you rescue the jedi Bastilla and escape Taris before it is destroyed by Darth Malek - leader of the Sith armies. From there you go on to Dantoine, study to become a jedi and set off on a quest for the jedi council travelling to several different worlds. Those familiar with the Star Wars saga will enjoy visiting such notable worlds as Tatooine, amongst other places.

I highly recommend this game. Although, just don't blame me if you get addicted to it!

This game is the best in a while

Knights of the Old Republic is a definate "must get" for any Star Wars fan, or for any person who enjoys a game with intense battles and the power of choice. I played this game, and not being a really intense gamer it took me a long time to beat. Thats not always a bad thing. In this game you start off as just a common person working for the republic, but not too far in the game you become a jedi and have the choice of which side you will choose. The orginality of the game makes it great. Not a whole lot of choose your path games turn out as well as this one did. The only complaint someone could have is that its not long enough, but it's sequel makes up for that.

Very Satisfying!!!

I have been playing this game for about 28 hours of game play time!!! Very good story and quests to take up! After defeating "Darth Bandon" on the world of Kashhyk I felt like a real jedi! I ripped the poor ........ a new .... with my lightsaber! Much fun! This game is very fun, and is very long.......28 hours and still going! Right now I am in the process of escaping the "Leviathan" battle cruiser which shall be a success thanks to my newly formed jedi skills...Truly great gaming experince! I recommend it!

Incredible game...best Star Wars game ever.

There have been a myriad of Star Wars titles over the years. Most of them have been flight simulations that, while decent, get stale very quickly. Knights of the Old Republic changes everything. Not only is this one of the best Role Playing Games in a long while, it is quite possibly the best Star Wars game period.

You start out by choosing your character class. Depending on the class you pick, you will have a certain amount of hit points, number of skills, and unique abilities when you level up through the game. For example, the soldier class will yield a stronger character with more hit points, but a scout character will start you out with points in abilities like computer hacking and repair, and you will level quicker and possibly gain more 'feats' (special abilities) per level, but ultimately be much weaker in hit points.

The game itself is somewhat typical of an RPG. Talk to NPC's and get quests. There is a main mission throughout the entire game but there is a vast number of side mission for you to complete. Combat is real-time, though it is a form of turn-based real time in that you will input a command and wait for your action to be performed, but the action will never stop. When you finally gain the use of force powers, combat will be taken to a whole new level of fun and challenge. Chances of hitting are based off 'D&D' rules with rolls of dice. It is computed randomly, and there is good chance of scoring a hit, but at the same time there is every bit as much good of a chance you will miss.

There are some mini-games, such as a card game called Pazaak, which is basically a modified game of Blackjack. Other games include Swoop Racing, quite similar to the Pod Racing popularized in Episode I and its respective games. There are also brief stints where you must face ships in combat in outerspace. It is basically a shooting gallery, and is very easy. The core gameplay revolves around the RPG game.

The story is very intriguing. There are many characters who will join your group as the game progresses. Some are optional, some you might just pass by, and some you might inadvertantly kill before they join you if you aren't too careful! The characters all have their own little stories and even sidequests that will open up as you talk to them more and more. Some of the characters, like Canderous Ordo, a grizzled Mandalorian veteran, add a distinct personality to the game. There are also shocking and surprising twists towards the end of the game that will completley blow your mind, and it keeps the game exciting. The ability to lean toward the dark side or light side of the force is a fun little aspect of the game as well, and it does have a direct effect on the game's storyline and outcome. As a fun bonus, as you lean more towards the Dark Side, your skin will become ghostly white and veiny, ala Emperor Palpatine from the movies. You will also get more vicious, with evil and manipulative responses for conversations. You earn Dark Side or Light Side points by making decisions and triggering events in the game. You must be careful...if you lean toward the dark side you will inevitably bar yourself from more of the game's features and easter eggs...but being evil is so much more fun.

Some of your characters will also interact with each other. For example, having two characters with similar backgrounds in your group for extended periods of time may yield a conversation between the two of them. Often times the conversations could be heated and negative, other times the characters will get along quite well and be very friendly. It is little bits like that which make the game a blast to play. Talking to NPC's can get very boring, however. Since many aliens don't speak English(Basic, for SW fans and game terms), they repeat the same gibberish over and over and over. And it also takes them about 30 seconds just to say 'Thanks and goodbye' since they talk so slowly and mutter so much gibberish. I often found myself speed-reading through the text and skipping along since I had no desire to listen an alien spout 'jibba wubba flubba bobo' 7 times in a row.

Despite the game's pros, it is not without its faults. For starters, it is extremely glitchy. Many times the game would momentarily freeze, and then start up again while in the pause menu. Other times during combat the character would suddenly warp to another part of the area, leaving your other teammates to fend for themselves, often times unsuccessfully. Sometimes you will freeze during combat, unable to move or execute commands (from a glitch, not from a gameplay status). Sometimes, characters will die in the middle of a conversation, ending the game. How or why that happens I don't know, but it is particularly annoying to be in the middle of an involved conversation, and then mysteriously drop dead for no reason. Other glitches include your teammates wandering off, leaving you to fend for yourself, most of the time unsuccessfully. They will either become stuck on a corner or will just not participate in the fight, making them useless. This game easily could've spent another month, maybe even 2 months, in development. I'm surprised it was released with so many obvious and detrimental glitches.

The game gets extraordinarily hard at the end. While it is to be expected, since it is the end of the game, there are some parts where it is just too overwhelming. This adds easily another 5-15 hours in the game, dying and restarting. Thankfully, you can save anywhere, at anytime. And saves are unlimited. This makes for an excellent gameplay experience.

I highly recommend this game to any Star Wars fan. Even non-Star Wars fans may be intrigued by the game's sheer excellence. Despite its problems, SW:KotOR stands out as possibly one of the best games i've played, and definitely one of the best games on the X-Box.
