excellent game - only one disappointment

Hey folks-

Just thought i'd add my 2 cents. Overall, this game was exceptional. The storyline and interacting with the other characters was superb. The graphics are terrific, and I would have rated this as 5 stars except for one thing. You can't control the fighting. Pretty much all you do is point your character towards an opponent and tell them to go fight. They do the fighting on their own. It was really disappointing for me, because I like to have control over that stuff. So, if you think you can get over the disappointment of not being too involved in the battles, this game will be exceptional in all other respects.

KOTOR, one of the greatest Star Wars games so far...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best Star War games so far. First thing you should know though, is that this is not real-time combat, this is somewhat like NeverWinter Nights, if you've ever played NWN you should know what it's like. The game starts off just like a Star Wars movie, packed with action. Once you're in control of your character your decisions take him into the light or dark side. Just like NWN you get to choose your character's physical appearance and and abilities, you choose wether you want him to be strong or wise or agile. When it comes to battles it is somewhat turn-based but not like Final Fantasy, you get to choose what your party will do and in what order they will do it. The game's control is great and simple. The story line is exactly what you would expect a Star Wars movie to be like, packed with a few surprises, and the game has enough action to keep you playing for a long while. Besides that there are the mini-games like swoop racing and nice quests like bounty hunting. I recommend Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for those XBOX players that want to try an awesome RPG. I assure you that it is at least worth the rental.

Hope you don't have a bad Xbox

I like the game, good graphics, great voice acting/sound effects, good story. My main problem with the game isn't really the game itself. LONG STORY...I got my first Xbox for Christmas 2001, and always had "dirty disk" errors. It finally got to a point that it stopped recognizing ALL disks, even CD's and DVD's. Thankfully my brother got the extended warranty. So, here I am with this newer one, and still have that problem. It is compounded much more with this game just because of the way the game is played. Just as I'm getting into it, it says "dirty disk". And because the people at Microsoft didn't put a power or eject button on the remote, I have to keep getting up and restarting the Xbox. Not really a big deal, just a big pain in the butt. The biggest problem with this is that I have to get the game restarted again. Then, I may have gone a ways since my last save point, and have to trudge through the same spot again. I have a very hard time getting into the game because I feel like I spend more time restarting my Xbox. After looking at Xbox message boards, I see that this is a known problem. Not for this game specifically, but for the system itself (have a lot of the same problem with Halo and Morrowind). It seems they deny this when someone calls customer support. Like I said, it just makes it very hard to get into and want to continue playing it. If you've had these "dirty disk" problems with your Xbox, you probably would want to stay away from this title.

Another problem I have with it is the turn based fighting. They could have made it a 3rd person shooter for the fighting, not that there is really THAT much of it. It's hard to enjoy the fight sequences when you have so little control. They went for something different, I'll give them that. But, it just doesn't make the game flow smoothly. This does seem to get better as you get further. Not that the style changes, just don't seem to mind the style as much as when you first play the game.

Also, there is just too much talking. I get tired of listening to the people talk and just want to play. The way they have it set up isn't the best. They may show three options of things you can ask someone, but even if you don't ask them the other two things, your character asks anyway after the one question you picked. Why even give a choice if you're going to ask all possible questions anyway? It should just start talking and have the whole conversation right then and there. That would help move the game along more quickly.

With all this said, I still like the game, just wish I could play it. Even with the other issues, I would probably LOVE this game if it wasn't for the "dirty disk" errors. I find myself just looking at a blank screen because I don't feel like getting up AGAIN to restart the darn thing.

Hope this helps...

Maybe I Just Don't Get It

Or maybe there's no it to get. After reading so many glowing reviews both on Amazon and elsewhere, I was anxious to try this game. However, after playing the game for several hours, I just couldn't get very involved in it. Maybe it's me, after all I'm not a big RPG gamer, but the whole thing seemed so passive. And I have no idea what the fuss is about the graphics; they are adequate at best. True, the sound and voice acting are superior to most other games, and the story is certainly better written than the last two movies, but what did me in was the "sit and watch" fighting. Given that I generally [am not good] at combat, I initially thought that I would like this, but it quickly became boring. I may re-visit this game in a few weeks and see if my opinion changes, but for now, I just don't get it.

A Masterpiece of the Genre

This game is easily one of the best computer RPG's I've
ever played.

It features a compelling plot set in the exciting Star
Wars universe, 4000 years, give or take, before the films.

The system is a slimmed down version of the D20 used in the
"pen and paper" Star Wars RPG. I would have liked to see
a few more character classes beyond the games selection
of Soldier, Scout and Scounderel available, but that's easily
forgiveable.

Besides the core plot involving a quest for mysterious
artifacts, there's dozens of side quests ranging from
completely light-hearted to deadly serious. None of them
are required to complete the game other than to build up
experience levels. Most are interesting, though a few
get tiring. Not being required, though, you can ignore
the dull ones.

There's a total of eight characters, seven of which
of backstories that lead to sidequests. All of them
are worth persuing. My favorites are the psychotic
droid HK-47 and the cantankerous old coot of a Jedi,
Jolee Bindo.

There are a few flaws. Graphics are, by XBOX standards,
unimpressive. There's a couple of action sequences to
complete that require you to use your reflexes. I don't
feel that belongs in an RPG. Fortunately, they're not
difficult.

The flaws, though, are trivial and are far outshone by
a brilliant game. It's easily worth the cost of the game,
and might even be worth the cost of an XBOX just to play
it. It's THAT Good.

Didn't get game of the year for nothing.

I'm going to keep it short and sweet. This game is amazing, if you like star wars and if you like video games get this one. It's fun and challenging and good for any star wars fan. It got game of the year in like 2003 (i can't remember exactly) from at least 5 different magazines and websites. super fun don't pass it off.

THE BEST GAME EVER AND STILL PLAYING IT

THE BEST GAME EVER and STILL PLAYING IT!!!!!!!!!! If your anything like the hard core Star Wars fan and NEED to learn the ways of the FORCE (or scwartz) then this game would still be played. Knights of the Old Republic game made me want to go out and buy an XBOX (which it did). This game includes a near endless ways on how you interact with the other characters (in a good or bad way) and gives you character creation options (limited but still creative). I love that the ending and story changes when you choose either the light-side or dark-side. Thankyou soo much for making this game for Xbox now please will you kindly make it for PSP too soo I can carry it wherever I go?

No gameplay - at all?

First, I want to say that I realize most of the other reviews have raved about this game and referred to it as the "best" Star Wars game, and "best" game in general this year. I entirely disagree, as I rented the game two days ago, and i would like to point out the good and bad:

Pros:
Graphics:
I haven't really seen better graphics anywhere, and I was impressed with the graphics and sound for this game.

Storyline & Theme:
Cool story, and I must say, good job creating an atmosphere for Star Wars time minus 4000 years.

Cons:
Gameplay:
Horrible, perhaps the worst I have ever played. If you like pure RPG where you are basically watching a movie that is "choose your own path," then this game is for you. But if you actually want to play a video game (ex. Obi Wan), then there is no game to be found here. You just walk around and talk to people and see the reactions. When you fight, you just select to "engage" and watch the movie continue. You don't actually DO anything, and you can't actually FIGHT anyone. It is completely 180 from Obi Wan where you go around fighting enemies, exploring boards, gathering clues, and solving levels in classic video game style. Plus, to make things worse, you don't even have the force or a lightsaber until who knows when? - (I gave up on this game after six hours of pure boredom.)

Perhaps my mistake to expect it to be anything like Obi Wan, Halo, Max Payne, etc. But just a warning: if you like to actually control the subject and play a video game, don't even waste the six bucks on renting it. Likewise, if you like to just select options and watch the game play itself out for you, you'll probably love this game.

Shame really, why can't they make an Obi Wan that's not riddled with poor graphics and sound, and a shallow story? At least that was fun to play.

BORING....................

The only reason I bought this game is because it had this so called "game of the year" thingy. You can't even attack, whats up with that. I'm a big boy, I can fight for myself I don't need the Xbox doing it for me. After an hour all I got done was making my stupid charater then I found out that you can't attack. Practicly the whole game is talking, talking, talking It's like The Social gathering game gone wrong. Do yourslef a favor and don't buy it. Its a total waste. Da** u Lucas arts.

Me son wants to be a stupid jedi knight now.

This game made my son try and force choke me when I told him to get ready for bed. He also takes the broom stick and hits me with it like it is a lightsaber now. I have about a dozen welts on me from that broomstick. He has even learned all of the alien languages on the game. I have told him too many times that it is fake. This boy is 15 years old and I am considering sewing the developers of the game for brainwashing my son with this nonsence. He is also now calling me "Meat Bag" because some robot on there calls the humans that on the game. He has been doing this for two months now and it is very annoying. His friend is also behaving the same way. The other day I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up and he told me that he wanted to be a dark jedi so he can take over the galaxy.I think that you should not let your kid have this game because it has made kids weird.
