First off, I would like to say that if you have any doubts about this game..buy the Star Wars Trilogy DVD collection because it comes with a free demo of SW:Battlefront. Let me just say that this game is probably the most incredible game I have ever played for the xbox (except KOTOR). In Battlegrounds you can re-live all of the battles of any of the movies! There are a ton of planets that you can journey to to fight your enemy. Theses planets are: Hoth, Tatooine, Endor, Yavin 4, Kashyyyk (Wookie homeworld, also in KOTOR),Bespin (cloud city), Naboo, Kamino, and others.
Now for the units.. It took me about 25 minutes before I could actually decide what unit I wanted to be. The choices are vast in numbers and all have tons of advantages in their own ways. I wound up picking the Republic Pilot, because I loved flying. My second choice, however, would have been the Republic Sharpshooter. The Classes are: Alliance, Republic, Separatists, or the Empire. The Units for each Class vary greatly, and each one is unique!
There is a single player on this games, and you can go head to head, or do conquer missions. The SP is a good idea to play at first just to get used to the controls and the surroundings at first. However, if you have Xbox Live, things just got better. You thought that you had a lot of choices with the units...well, that is nothing compared to what you can do on Live! You can play your favorite battles with up to 16 other players and customize everything you want. You can chat with your allies or taunt your enemies throught the live communicator.
PROS:
- Excellent graphics
- tons of worlds to choose from
- Tons of units, and space ships available
- Excellent depiction of the battles that took place in the movies
CONS:
- None (except if you dont have Xbox Live...get it...this game might not be totally meant for Live....but the best battles are fought over Live and you are missing out without it!)
Overall..GREAT GAME one of the best from Lucasarts yet!
Dreams Do Come True!!!

Star Wars: Battlefront for the XBOX is a wargame that can be played from either first-person or third person view. First let me get the bad points out of the way: there are no outer-space battles, you cannot play as a jedi, the A.I. is hard headed, and the maps are too small for flying vehicles. It should also be noted that this is NOT a mission-based game like, "Halo", so stop comparing every game to "Halo" please! Battlefront plays similar to a Pc game called "Battlefield 1942", you CAN compare it to that game. You can win the game by capturing all command posts (territories) or killing all enemy units on the map. You play as a grunt soldier in the frontlines of all the epic battles seen in Star Wars films (including Tattooine, Hoth, Endor, Naboo and much more!) Before you begin battle you pick from four different army factions: Clones, Republic, CIS, and Rebels. Then you pick the soldier type you want to be: rifleman (rapid fire blaster), pilot (can repair and dispense medkits to soldiers), missle launcher (bazooka), sniper (long distance zoom killer), and commando (special unit). Most soldier class carry primary and secondary weapons and a couple of grenades. Everytime you get killed you can respawn and choose a different soldier type. You can travel by foot or ride in vehicles if available. Almost all of the vehicles from the Star Wars universe are in this game! Even the monsterous AT-AT! You'll be fighting alongside an army of A.I. controlled soldiers. There's lasers, missiles, and grenades exploding everywhere! The battles are intense, chaotic and a lot of fun! It looks and feels just like the movies! If you like FPS or wargames, BF 1942 or the Star Wars universe get this game! Its a dream come true!
Pros:
+intense battles
+lots of weapons and vehicles
+lots of maps
+excellent graphics and animation
+excellent sound effects
+excellent music
+co-op or versus gameplay
+xbox live multiplayer
+good A.I. BOTS
Cons:
-you cannot play as a jedi
-maps are too small
-no outer-space battles
-A.I. disobeys orders
-lacks game mode variety
-gets repetative
The Xbox version; the crisp graphics, have a higher framerate and the game loads faster than PS2 version.
Definately hits the "waiting for Halo 2" spot

Although, I have read reviews for many games, I have never felt the need to read one...Until NOW!!! This game is addicting and a full on fighting experience. Please note that this is from a casual gamer. Since I have a job and a girlfriend, my game time is limited. That is why this game is sooo great. You can jump in to any battle on any side and just play. No complicated ordering troops about or huge strategy battlefield nonsense. Just shoot-em up fun. Plus, you get to play in environments and outfits straight out of the movies.
Additionally, as an ex-soldier, I like the fact that you really get to be just that...a soldier. Not Han or Luke or Vader. There are tons of games dedicated to the "heroes" of the "force." As most true soldiers know, it is usually the grunts and ground pounders that win the wars. So you get to fight as the fighters do, not behind the scenes directing the battles or leading troops...just fighting.
I know that many full time gamers will disagree, stating that the game is not complicated enough or that the controls weren't exactly perfect, BUT for those of us regular joes who just want to have fun for an hour or so after work or before going out to a club, this is the perfect game.
Of course, it helps the playing experience if you like the Starwars Movies.
What a Star Wars game should be!

This is the best ground combat Star Wars game to date! This is not a game with a richly detailed story like "Knights of the Old Republic". "Battlefront" is instead designed to be an awesome multi-player online experience, but thankfully the solo player has not been neglected. This game is far from perfect, however it is not so seriously flawed as to be doomed to the bargin bin.
NEGATIVES:
1. Friendly AI are stupid; acting mostly on their own, they will frag you and themselves as much as the enemy will.
2. There is no choice of view while in a vehicle or spacecraft.
3. Jedi are non-playable, support characters and can not be killed!
4. Aircraft cannot fly very high and are severly limited by most map sizes.
5. Squad commands are basically useless in the solo campaigns.
POSITIVES:
1. The graphics and sound are beautiful and worthy of the movies!
2. The ground combat is solid with excellent control setup.
3. The battlefields are massive engagements filled with large forces slugging it out for control of key locations on many planets.
4. Many excellent choices of troop types and vehicles, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
5. Split screen, linked systems, online playing: what ever your choice, multi-player is just an awesome experience!
6. Very little story in campaign, however there are excellent perks like DVD clips from the movies and unlockable movie stills and artwork.
7. You can chose to drive/fly a vehicle or just be a gunner!
Like I said already, this game does have minor flaws, but they will not over shadow the pure enjoyment this game brings as a shooter! "Star Wars: Battlefront" is on par as a ground combat game to Nintendo's "Star Wars: Rouge Squadron" series as a flight game. Regardless if your an online player or not, this is one of the best Star Wars games ever!
Great with one main letdown

This game is a first person shooter with good graphics and an easy learning curve. You can play one of five different characters. I know it says something like thirty, but each side (Clones, Imperial, Rebel, Droids) has the same units. There isn't really a difference between a rebel sharpshooter and a droid marksmen, or whatever they call it.
The graphics are very good, and the gameplay is easy to pick up on.
The one main complaint I had was the vehicles. Sure you can control a AT-ST, X-wing, Tie fighter, etc.., but they all have terrible controls. If you ever played any of the rogue squadron games, you will be disappointed with the controls like I was.
The multiplayer is fun, because you can compete against your friends. It is cool how you have respawn points that let you come back closer to the action too.
Overall it is a 5 star first person shooter with a pitiful addition of vehicles that I eventually started ignoring.
Well crafted, addicting, and good for long or quick sessions

THE SHORT: Great for pick-up-and-play. Fun and addictive, interesting and strategic without going too deep. This isn't a complex war-simulator, this is a fun action/shooter.
THE LONG: I'll begin by skipping any talk of re-living Star Wars battles and how accurate the scenarios are, etc. Yes I'm a Star Wars fan, you probably are too if you're reading this, and you don't need to worry, this game gets the feel down just fine.
So how is the actual game itself?
Very fun. I played the demo on a rented copy of the SW dvds since I just wanted to see them, having bought a bootleg of the original versions on dvd. Once I played the demo, I was hooked for hours on the one level offered. Getting the full game, I played for days on end and was happy to see that some finishing touches made the gameplay better than the demo with such things as seeing enemy troops on the map and more adjustable options.
In this game, you pick from about 20 levels that range in terrain (forest of Endor, desert of Tattooine, ice planet Hoth, etc) and complexity (open levels, levels with trees and caves for cover, passageways, elevated positions, etc). You'll find several that you want to play over many times. Once you pick a level, you pick a side (Rebels or Empire for the old schoolers, or CIS robots and the Clone Troopers for the new trilogy). Sorry, no way to play the Rebels against the Clone Troopers and mixes like that, but with 4 sides to choose from in almost every battleground and 5 troop types per faction, you'll have a lot of fun messing around.
The game is greatly set up for pick up and play-style action. Once you pick your stage and side, you begin. Just pick one of your bases to spawn your soldier, and you're good to go. Walk through the stage at your discretion, fighting how you want to. Jump into a melee and back up your brothers with blaster rifle blazing, throw projectiles from afar, or do some sniping. There's nothing more satisfying in this game than watching some Imperial drones (or Rebel scum if you prefer) run past your Endor tree and then jumping out behind them and capping a few, only to run back into the safety of the foliage while your comrades engage them.
The controls are quick, easy and adjustable, and there's not much worry involved. Just have fun: When your energy bar runs out, pick a soldier again and hop back into the fray as much as you want until your side dies off or wins. Don't worry about ammo since you have a fair amound and it gets replenished with each respawning or with supply droids that you stand next to. Just fight, run, blast, die, then keep coming back and taking down as many troops as you can. But remember that you can always quietly snipe or jump into the continually respawning rides (Tauntauns, X-wings, AT-ATs) for a change of pace.
The game is engineered for strategy too. On easy you can win a lot of battles with a quick trigger finger. But go up in difficulty and you'll find that quickly overtaking the sniper towers on Kashyyk gives you a huge advantage over just storming the beach Normandy style. You can always throw on "Instant Action Heroes" to spice things up too, giving each side an invincible lightsaber wielding toughie to deal with. Unfortunately no, you yourself cannot play as one of the main people such as Luke or Vader or wield your own lighsaber for that matter. At first, though I knew this was clearly a game more worried about the infantry battles in Star Wars, I still wished I could play as a Jedi. But believe me, the game is just right as it is- playing as a Jedi or using a lightsaber would make you pretty much unstoppable and take out the entire strategic and competitive core that makes this game so fun. A cool unlockable perhaps, but play this game for a day and you won't miss it.
Lastly, aside from the quick play mode there's a story mode that basically follows the events of the films and lets you follow them, playing them as the series' history dictated. That's decent, as is the conquest mode which lets you try to win as many battles as you can until you conquer all of the planets, or lose and watch the opponent try to do the same to you, battle by battle. Unfortunately, these are all only slight variations on the same theme, and it never comes down to more than a different structure for participating in the same 20 battlegrounds. It's funner just to have a friend or go online for more human competition, but even without, the battles that stretch across all of the game modes are extremely fun and addicting nonetheless.
With almost no badly designed or unexciting level designs and coupled with an addictive engine and lots of ways to fight any battle, to me this game is very well made and worthy of a purchase. Non Star Wars fans can probably enjoy it on the same level as a Dynasty Warriors title or similar constant-action game as well. It's a solid title that's easy to pick up and enjoy but deep enough to keep trying new strategies and setups. The negatives are that there isn't much variation on the battle-by-battle theme, and the unlockables are worthless (game design photos, etc). But for a fun action shooter, especially one that's so easy to get into, this one's solid.
Ok but only Ok

I was really looking forward to this game. I'm a big fan of shooters like Halo and the Tom Clancy games and this idea sounded and is still great. I must say that I was expecting a Rainbow Six type game set in the Star Wars universe. This game does not even come close to Halo or Rainbow in play or in story. The sound was alright and the graphics were acceptable, but neither knocked me out of my seat. To be honest, the graphics seemed more like a 90's arcade game. I'm not a big fan of running around with a bunch of other people just running and gunning, but if you are I don't think that you'll be disspointed. One major gripe that I have is the weapons, especially the sniper rifles....if we had stinkers like those today, we wouldn't have snipers at all. Since when does it take 2 headshots to kill someone and since when does a sniper rifle or other blaster shoot all over the place half of the time? I am probably judging this game a little too harshly, but after Ghost Recons and Halo how can you accept less? To sum it up, die hard Star Wars fans get this game and you'll probably be satisfied; fans of online shooting get this game at a discount; someone looking to try a shooter for the first time, look elsewhere; if you like Star Wars and shooters, get this at a discount. The best advice I can give is game makers look at the best games for ideas and game buyers get this one when it comes down to under 20 bucks. Save your big money for Halo 2, Ghost Recon 2, Splinter Cell 2/3, Men of Valor and Brothers in Arms.
Fun, but not what it could be

In Battlefront, we're told we can play as rebels or empire . . . which is true . . . sort of. There are a few games modes to chose from, and if you pick the 'Galactic Conquest' version, you do indeed pick a side (and a time period . . . Clone Wars or Civil War) and go from planet to planet, either liberating or capturing (depending on your side.)
However, the Historical Battle option choses your side for you )depending on the battle) as you go from war scene to war scene (again, dependent on either the Clone War or Civil War time period.) In either case, you run around a large playing area trying to kill all members of the opposing team or capturing all command posts.
I rented this game with a friend yesterday, and, after two nights of gameplay, we've completed all versions of the game, save one, which I'm sure we'll get to tomorrow night, and while the game is fun with a friend, I can't imagine myself wanting to play it alone, or ever again having finished it so quickly.
On the plsu side, the gameplay/controls itself is rather intuitive and makes for a small learning curve, letting you really jump into play. The scenes themselves are well constructed and varied, taking you across the Star Wars Galaxy.
Great Fun for a short time despite some issues....

This is a good game. This is NOT anything like the demo version packaged with the DVD SW Collection. That version seems to have been an old version going back several revisions; even the controls and weapons are different. It takes you into the battles featured in the films and you can play any character except Jedi Knight or Sith. You can pilot X-wing, Y-wing or drive AT-AT or scout walker. You can also ride a Tantam but you can't shoot while mounted. The game starts with the battle with about 200 per side. You can come back to the battle after you're killed as long as there is a Command Post and you still have troops. The problems are few but noticeable. The dogfights are clumsy at best and the controls for the aircraft are inverted and takes getting use too. The troops can be ordered to follow you or hold a postion but they may not do so even when they acknowledge your orders. I found myself assaulting an enemy position alone after telling a group of soldiers to follow me. I've been in battles down to just me On Cloud City with only 4 or 5 enemy left and the game ends not letting me as a sniper to pick off the remaining troops and win the game. Very annoying. The Endor scene features speeder bikes if you can find one. Some of the weapons are limited in destructive power and on occasion will overheat or run out of ammo. A head shot should kill an enemy but it must be the very top of the head between the eyes. Very realistic though and enjoyable. I finished the campaign mode and now just play the conquest mode. Still not a game for Star Wars fans to ignore and a lot of fun. Update: After playing for about a 100 hours this game plays unfairly and even "cheats" by slowly converting a captured flag to your colors; enemys appear out of nowhere after clearing a small room; tanks on one side and nothing to counter it on the other; effectiveness of weapons, ie. 6-8 rockets to destroy a tank or 6 shots to kill an enemy; limited weapons to counter shielded droids; troops on your side don't give cover for you during assaults and shows no difference in winning the battle letting captured flags fall in to enemy hands. I found a group of AI just standing there doing nothing in a full fire fight. If I leave the circle of influence even for a second, the flag completely resets back to the enemy colors, leaving me to start over. The circle can be very small in some areas especially in the Rebel Fortress on Yarvin. I had to stand on top of the flag to convert it. And finally, when you "Respawn", you always have your back towards the enemy. I got killed quite a few times just trying to turn around to face the enemy. Still a game to check out when the price goes down.
To add to updates 6/12/05: Jedi can only be killed by pushing him into The Pit of Sarlec with you in a vehicle (Tatooine) or grenading him off a cliff or ledge in Bespin Rhen Var battle scenes. The Jedi will respawn. There are minor bugs in the game eg: Droideka spawning inside a mountain and firing at will in Geonosis with no way to get to him creating an infinite loop.
Best Action Game since Halo

If you're like me, you've been disappointed with most games that have come out for the Xbox because Halo set such a high standard that other games can't compare. Although Star Wars Battlefront is no Halo, it is the closest any action game besides Halo has come to meeting the expectations that I have had for the system.
Keep in mind the scope of this game. Many people have given unfair reviews because it didn't include things like the assault against the Death Star. Anyone who can read the back of the package can see that this is not the purpose of the game. The game seeks to allow the opportunity to experience the Star Wars movies from the point of view of the average grunt. The movies show just the heroes winning the major battles, but often the tides are turned by a few soldiers that don't get the glory.
Battlefront provides the chance to play as a regular joe. In this game, you're the person who has to run away from Darth Vader. Fighting a Sith Lord is the job of a Jedi. If you go up against him, you will die. Instead, help your side by carjacking an AT-AT, or or capturing a strategic piece of the battlefield. If you buy this game, buy it knowing that blowing up the Death Star and fighting with Light Sabers are dealt with in the other 200 Star Wars games that are out there. This one is too busy keepin' it real.
