Holy Tentacles from Hell !!

I love good horror movies, specially when gore is not the main attraction but just part of a good story (like David Cronenberg's The Brood, Videodrome or Naked Lunch).

And with Resident Evil 4 I feel that I am inside a smart horror movie myself. It is that good!

The other night before going to bed I wanted to play a couple hours more but stayed until 5am, went to bed and slept only a few hours to later go to work like a 'zombie'.

Resident Evil 4 is probably one of the best games ever on any platform. Go on an buy a Gamecube if you don't own one by now and catch up with Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4. Graphics are beautifully detailed, sounds are creepy and real, music is perfect and the playing experience is pure fun (^_^)!

Why this one is better than the previous games...

Resident evil 4 is a great game ,no doubt about it.i like this game more than the previous RE games because this part of the series is much more action orientated than puzzling, the puzzles in this game are more simplistic than in the previous series and don't take too much of your time so the game moves in a much faster pace , you don't have the feeling that u got stuck because you couldn't find that other half of a key to the next room. The graphics are great(somewhat like the remake of resident evil but better) , sound is good and the gameplay is also great because now you can really aim at specific bodyparts and you don't get frustrated because of the weird camera angles.

however there is maybe a downside for the hardcore resident evil fans because now there are no zombies to kill and the puzzling bit of the game is reduced to a minimum. And as far as i have played the game there is also no sign of the Umbrella corporation like in the previous games, but despite of these changes this game is a must have and it has improved much much since the other games. This game still got its frightening moments and creepy area's like the other games ,so people who liked the games for the scares , the tension and good story won't be dissapointed with this one.

Res. 4 is one game that I truely have to give two thumbs up.
The game centers Res. 2 hero Leon in a location that is not the Mansion nor the City of Racoon. I played this game enough to where I truely have become an addict to the blood and guts that are around every tree in the vast wooded lands that surround the village, cemetary, church, castle, ect.... Interested?
Playing this game is like you are fighting for your very life and just when you think you can stop and take a quick breath, a villager with a chainsaw will nearly take your head off. One of the most fun features is that the game does move a lot quicker then before and you have more controle of your weapons and where you can hit your target "head, arms, legs, stomach, knees,ect.."
I have had more fun then one should admit shooting the Non-Zombies in this game, but the really cool part is that this is a game that just about anything goes. As in if it is alive then it can die!
Check this game out. Rent it if you want butt play it.
If you just can not keep yourselves alive then try it with the action replay device for the cube. That is for the weak but very entertaining none the less.

One of the Greatest....

To all of you pricks who say "Gamecube is a kiddie system for people who don't play real video games" you never played RE4!!!
This game is so f**king awesome.

Graphics- 10/10 The graphics are unbelievable, but not without the rare flaw. Every once in a while, an enemy might have a weapon go through another enemy, but that is very hard to come by. The detail is extrodinary. You can even see the detail in an enemys' face and eyes (wrinkles, etching, scars, color). The blood and gore is very realistic, too.

Sound- 9/10 The music is good for the situations given to you. My only complaint (of the whole game, really) is voice acting. I give that an 8/10. At least it isn't like RE Directors Cut for PS1, right?

Story- 10/10 What will happen to Leon, Ashley, and Luis? play the game to find out. You won't be disappointed.

Gameplay- 11/10 The control is excellent in this game. It still has past controls, like B plus down turns Leon backwards. But the new mix between First and Third person shooters is interesting (or just called "over the shoulder camera). The bosses are challenging, and you face crowds of villagers. You will be just walking around, and turn around to see 6 villagers heading at you, or an El Giante ready to rip you to shreads.

In short, this is a must own title for anyone with a gamecube. If you don't have a GC, get one to play RE4, or wait and play the port on PS2 (this game is "exclusive" for GC for at least 10 months). Just for comparison, here is a list of games and their respective systems:

Gamecube: Resident Evil 4
X-Box: Halo 2
Playstation 2: Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas
Dreamcast: Shenmue
Nintendo 64: Legend of Zelda, Ocarania of Time
Playstation: Silent Hill
Sega Saturn: Panzer Dragoon
Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Super Nintendo: Killer Instinct
Nintendo Entertainment System: Super Mario Brothers

Best Resident Evil ever

Resident Evil 4 is everything the reviewers say and more. It is simply one of the greatest video games in history. It took me 28 solid hours to get through the game and I'm ready to sit down and play it again.

Here is why it rocks:

* The graphics are hands down the best I've ever seen on the Gamecube. The game features huge open areas, particle effects, incredible detail, awesome character motion and a smooth framerate. When I was playing the game I was struck by the thought that people could actually design such an incredibly detailed and expansive world. It was kind of the feeling I get watching a Pixar movie. It's just amazing how much work must go into these projects.

* The game is gigantic almost to a ridiculous degree. I swear there must be as much real estate in this game as all the rest of the Resident Evil games combined.

* No more pre-rendered backgrounds. Everything is full 3D.

* No more typewriter ribbons, no more storage boxes, no more running out of ammo, tons of upgradeable weapons, more mini games. They fixed so many issues that have plagued the series since its inception.

Is it perfect? No. Here is the main problem that may bother RE purists. The game is flat out not scary. There is not a moment of scare in the whole game. The closest the game comes is when Ashley is on her own with nothing more than a flashlight and some quick reflexes. Maybe it's because they got rid of the dramatic angles in the pre-rendered backgrounds, maybe it's because ammo is plentiful. More likely it's because unlike the previous games the enemies come at you relentlessly throughout. I racked up almost one thousand kills by the end of the game. The tension of being down to your last couple of bullets in a dark corner of an old mansion is gone replaced by mowing down creepy mutant hillbillies like stalks of wheat. Luckily mowing down mutant hillbillies is a blast.

The game is significantly easier than previous Resident Evils. I played on Normal and beat the final boss my first time out. I NEVER managed to do that in previous versions. Also, the main villain is not the Umbrella Corporation. Umbrella is involved in the story but since Umbrella is the thread the binds the series it seemed weird to bring in a new group of villains even if they had a similar MO of genetic engineering.

Regardless, RE4 is an instant classic and any imperfections are completely overshadowed by the games sheer magnificence. Anyone who has the slightest interest in action/adventure or first person shooters or even survival horrors owes it to themselves to experience the new benchmark.

2005 starts with a bang

Note: This isn't a "I'm giving it 5 stars even though I haven't played it" reviews or a "I played demo so real thing's probably same" ones. I have played the final retail version.

I'll say this now: I'm not a fan of the Resident Evil games. I'm no pansy that hates being scared but it's kind of hard to get scared when you're packing a pump shotgun.(Geez you came out of nowhere! Now die Punk ). Not totally exciting. But for some reason I just had to play Resident Evil 4. Could be a bit of a drought in games lately(I've beaten MGS3, Metroid Prime 2 and San Andreas, don't have Xbox to play Halo 2). And after picking it up, it's a stellar entry into a series I kind of despise.

Story: Takes place in 2004, 6 years after Raccoon City was nuked to stop the T-Virus from spreading. Once a rookie cop during that time, Leon Kennedy is now an agent who receives an assignment: rescue the President's daugther, Ashley. While there, he finds a man in a cabin who doesn't take too kindly to strangers and attacks Leon. Leon is then attacked by a huge horde of them but something's wrong: they're faster, even a bit smarter, using traps and ambushing, even ladders into windows. These aren't the same zombies as before.

Graphics: If not the best then one of the best graphics on any home console. The locations and villages have a strong atmosphere and totally immerses you into it with real-looking environments. And wait till the boss battles, nothing as massive as Quadraxis from Metroid Prime 2(thank god) but they're some of the most cinematic bosses ever.

Sound/Music: A survival/horror games lives or dies(no pun intended) by it's music. If it can immerse you and make you edgy with creeking floorboards, footsteps, distant cries then it'll get you perfectly in tune with the environments. While there's some cases of bad voice acting, it's miles above what the series used to have(no overracted "Ada!" here).

Gameplay: If you're a RE fan or not, you'll probably agree with me on this: the control scheme felt busted. It was just awkward. People have compared it to driving a tank. And since the old games used a static camera(never really moved), due to the camera switching to the next scene, your character would now have slightly different controls. Up was always used to move your character forward so if the camera now has you in the background coming to the foreground, your first instinct to go down towards the camera makes you go back to the previous screen but going up was the correct way.

It's finally changed in Resident Evil 4. The camera takes a Splinter Cell-esque approach with the camera just behind Leon's right shoulder. It's not true 3rd person perspective a la Ratchet and Clank or Zelda but it's enough.

Also changed is the dynamics in battles, which are plentiful, sometimes too much so. It's not uncommon to have 10-15 of these..."things" after you. You can shoot them in the leg to slow them down or drop them to their knees, shoot their arms to drop the weapons, shoot the dynamite they throw so it explodes right in their face or blow their head off with a well-aimed bullet(not always, sometimes they just act as if the bullet grazed their face, holding it in pain). Word of advice: when it's nighttime, DO NOT blow their heads off. Drawers and tables can be moved in front of doors to barricade yourself in for awhile.

Like Shenmue, the A button is context-sensitive which means in certain areas, you can do a specific action. If an enemy has a ladder against a window, you can push it off. If they get too close, you can roundhouse kick them away. You can crouch from too close explosions etc. Aiming is a bit slow but it's a hell of a lot better than previous entries where you couldn't tell if you were directly aiming at them or not until you fired.

As for downsides? The action gets to be too intense at times with a large number coming at you from all sides and since the camera focused directly in front of Leon, you can't see if anyone is running at the sides or behind. There's no strafing(literally walking sideways, controlling Leon is either back, forward or turning) and no dodging like in Nemesis.

You have to switch to your ammo in the menu also. Can't just simply click a button and switch from your grenade to a gun. Your inventory is changed but it's slightly bothersome since your arsenal, first aid sprays and ammo take up space on a grid. Your shotgun takes up a good 3-4 spaces which would be perfect for ammo or herbs(your potions essentially). You can "level up" your guns and your attache case(no magically connected item boxes here) so you can carry more stuff. However, none of these cause you to just quit the game entirely, they're just things that'll irk you.

Dust off your Gamecube and pop this in. This is probably the most funnest action games in years and you'll oddly find yourself wanting to blow off some more heads and kill these spanish speaking enemies when you're not playing. Did I mention the controls are changed?

Great and intense game!

I think this game is the best so far in the series. Great new enemies, great AI for enemies and your little sidekick you obtaine in the middle of the game. Visuals are wonderful and nicely done. And the suspense is awesome!! Never a dull moment, even through cut scenes.
Leon is my favorite character, so this game was a dream come truwe. Highly recommmend!

Just need the novel by S D Perry to go with it and I will be a happy camper.

By far the best RE yet... it's not even close. It's surprising that Capcom didn't make these changes in earlier games. The camera is kinda funky and gets some getting used to but the gameplay is utterly addictive and satisfyingly fun. It's very unique in that it plays like an FPS (first person shooter) but still holds true to its "survival horror" action roots. On top of it all, IT'S REALLY LONG TOO... as it should be because I always thought the replay value on RE games were pretty low even with all the extras you would get. I wouldn't say buy a Gamecube just for this game but if you're lucky enough to own one, go get this game... or at least rent it. Good luck too... it's quite a challenging game.

I have the xbox, ps, gamecube pc you name it I have or have had it. This game is by far one of the top games I have ever played. It is scary in a unique way. The aiming system is a little quirky but with practice, you will be exploding heads in no time and once you get more weapons like the shotgun and rifle, it is all over.
If you are thinking about this game, think no more! Buy It:-)

I was a bit leery about picking up RE4. The last RE title I played left me completely unimpressed. Awkward controls and odd camera angles really took away from the overall experience. I eventually lost interest and sold the game before even completing it. I suppose this is why I was so blown away by RE4. It's a totally revamped experience. Capcom has done everything right with this one. The environments are astounding. The enemies are incredibly varied. The AI is clever. The ambient sound and music are a perfect match for the grim visuals. For the first time EVER, I was compelled to play a game through a second time (and when I'm done, I'll probably go for a third). It's that much fun. Do yourself a huge favor and get this game. Now.
