No spoilers! Read with confidence without me giving away information!!
When you're 32 years old, I'll admit, it's difficult supporting Nintendo. The lack of games is certainly the main issues, which explains why Nintendo is #3 behind XBOX and Playstatio 2. But I still stand by the big N, games like Zelda, Metroid Prime and the immense Resident Evil series. It's reason enough to hold onto the little Cube a little longer. Also, the repuation of the Cube being a kiddie system needs to be put to rest, especially after you lay your hands into Resident Evil 4 which is the most brutal and most appealing title I've ever played. Up front I will say, and without hesitation, this is " the best Gamecube title I've ever played" and is right up there with what the XBOX and Playstation 2 has released too.
1st things first, from what I've read before it's release, I know it has been in the works for over 2 years. Capcom always strives for perfection and I also read it was revamped and started over from scratch a total of 4 times! Capcom kept this monster quiet and underwraps for awhile, but the hype for it was phenomenal and people, gamers, critics, expected perfection considering the lengthy delays. I am pleased to say, not only did this game live up to hype, it surpassed it and then some. I've never had this much fun on my cube since Zelda! It's also one of the longest games I've ever played and expect tons of replay value just for that fact.
Resident Evil 4, while scary like it's other incarnations, feels totally different and FORGET what you know about the series, it's a whole new ball of wax. Think this game is simply about killing zombies then moving on to the next level? Think again. I won't give anything away, just know the game experience is as fresh as a new loaf of "just baked" bread, you'll always want to get more!
The new "behind the back" perspective works amazingly well and you feel more in control and it has never been done before. The graphics are astonishing and pushes the system to the limit and is easily the best looking game I've ever layed my eyes on, even better what XBOX or PS2 has ever offered! Really! Take it from someone who has them all! The main strength of the game is that it keeps the faith of the series by being a great survial horror game with addding new elements of gameplay and scaring the wits out of you!
I wont' give details away about the game, but I have to put the basics down on paper for you. The enemies in the game, sometimes referred to as "not-zombies" are smarter than what we are used to in past games. They throw firecrakers at you, come at you with chainsaws, axes, bats, bombs, you name it, these evil sickos want to take you out. Are they human or zombies or a combination? Play the game to find out.
The graphics are top notch in every sense of the word. Simply beautiful in a "disgusting way". You'll see the most obscene images of guts, decapitations, bloodletting, exploding heads, cut off arms and legs, spewing blood and the most disturbing visuals I've ever seen on any video game. This is not Mario Sunshine. I about jumped off my couch when I experienced my characters head getting sawed off by a sick dude with a rusty chainsaw. Don't think you'll be alone, at least you got your trust weapons, sniper guns, pistols, rocket launchers, flame throwers, grenades, shotgunts, your weaponry is astounding in Resident Evil 4 and it's truly exciting putting them into action against the crazies in the game.
This 4th installment lives up to the Resident Evil Tradition and will scare the wits out of you from start to finsih. Make note to only play this game when the sun goes down and turn off the lights. Why play at night? Because a game of this magnitude deserves it! Capcom painstakingly spent 2 years making this baby a reality. Now you can finally experience the best looking video game ever. Really. The overall blood factor is as immense as the "mature" rating on the cover implies. No kiddies please!
The game also has an amazing storyline and presentation. Tremendous voice acting actually for a video game, not grammy material, but good for Resident Evil to boot, and great cinematic sequences during your disgusting journey!! The sound is 1st rate too, I was hoping for a little more music accompanying my walks through the game, but for the stuff that does occur during certain situations, it's all good. The sound of a shotgun blast taking down 8 sickos is pleasing to your ears, believe me! Crank this baby up.
Games made specifically for the Cube has kept the system afloat since it was released. Sure it's 3rd place next to the powerful XBOX and almighty Playstation 2, but Gamecube survives on games that are made specifically for the system. Capcom and Nintendo are the big makers and seem to always churn out quality stuff. As with most Nintendo titles, this game is worth playing, and if you don't own the system yet, you might consider for Resident Evil 4 alone, it really is that good. This is the type of game that is so good, you'll want to play over and over. Could be a "game of the year contender" without question.
If you can take the terror, wipe off the dust on your Gamecube and bring it back to life with the first name in terror, Resident Evil is back and it's better than ever.
Exciting and good looking single player game.

After reading the great reviews of this game I went out and bought a Gamecube just to play it and I'm glad I did. After finishing Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox, I have been searching for the next great game. I tried Doom 3 on my PC, but was unsatisfied. I also tried various Xbox games, but none were as good as Ninja Gaiden. Well I can honestly say that this game is as much fun, if not more, than Ninja Gaiden. The graphics are not quite as good as Ninja Gaiden on my 94" diagonal projection system, but I am trying to get the Gamecube component cables to improve the picture quality. Gameplay is good. The contols are well designed and the game is not too hard and not too easy. Save points seem fairly spaced. One caveat is that you can buy guns, health, but not ammunition. This forces you to choose your weapon to match your opponent and use it wisely to conserve ammo. I highly recommend this game.
If you don't play this, I will Thrust Punch you to Pittsburgh.

I don't care for the Resident Evil series at all. I was raised on the Alone in the Dark series- the father of survival/horror games, and they are the foundation for scary games. I played the first Resident Evil when it came out almost 10 years ago, and didn't care for it. 'played the second, and didn't care for it. 3 and Code: Veronica didn't do much for me either. So when 4 came out, I had little interest in it. But it kept getting rave reviews EVERYWHERE, and I became interested over time. When I finally gave the game a chance, I was amazed- it was a great game. Me? Enjoying a Resident Evil game? Who knew? Everything about this game was fantastic. The camera angles, control scheme, ambiance, graphics, and even the replay. Resident Evil 4 does deserve all those Game of the Year awards that it got. It's -that- good. But since the ps2 release of the game, I was very tempted to give the GameCube version one star less. But it wouldn't be fair, as they were released at separate times. If you have both systems, I'd vote for getting the ps2 version, as it has a lot more extras than the GC one, which adds even more to the replay. But if you only have a GC, then it's just fine. As long as you own this game, you're set.
Resident Evil 4 is more of a side-story in the series, not really having an impact on the main story line, but that doesn't mean it's going to suck. You play as Leon, a special agent out to rescue the president's daughter from a hidden village. Things don't go over too well when he makes it there, and discovers one of the officers that escorted him there impaled on a bonfire. Yeah, these people obviously hold equal rights for everyone. The villagers all host a parasite known as Las Plagas, which makes them violent. Having no luck finding Ashley in the village, Leon must go through tons of different areas before he can even see her. Taking on massive man-eating fish, giants, zombie dogs, and more. And when he finally does find Ashley, it's not like the villagers are just going to let him leave with her. Nope, a whole other story kicks in involving a cult lead by Lord Saddler, a man who's trying to make the world follow him via the Las Plagas. I guess he thinks that using the president's daughter as the key host in America's going to really spread that fast. Now you've got to put an end to Saddler and his followers as well, and deal with even more monsters, double-crossers, and old friends. For once, we get a Resident Evil with a nonlinear plot, and it's a nice change.
I can't stress how well-done RE4 is. There are never any slow or boring moments. The cut scenes appear on a regular basis, but they're never too long- they actually move along the plot, and some of them require your attention in order to continue with the game. Remember the QTEs from Shenmue? They've been used here, only you pretty much HAVE to do them properly in order to survive. Some that take place during cut scenes have Leon in a fight for his life while others from in-game gameplay have you turning levers, dodging boulders, and other hazards. Some of them may take a few tries before you get the hang of it. The item system here is also a vast improvement over the previous installments- allowing you to upgrade your carrying case several times, allowing for mass item carrying. On top of this, the weapons are all a hell of a lot better too. You're not limited to one handgun, then a magnum later on, and then the obligatory rocket launcher. Leon will find weapons through the adventure, buy some kick-ass ones, and can now upgrade them as well. Upgrading isn't required to complete the game, but it sure helps. Firepower, firing speed, capacity and reload times can all be upgraded, and all the weapons have their own unique bonus once they're fully upgraded in each category. For example, the Red 9, a handgun, can get a 5.0 firepower rating, which is just slightly weaker than the first shotgun you get. 'not bad at all. And if you upgrade a weapon all the way, but want to buy a better one later on, sell that puppy for tons of cash and use it towards more upgrades. Yes, there's money in this game: obtained by collecting it from fallen enemies or selling jewels and other treasures found in crates and barrels. This makes the game a little bit easier since it allows you to buy First Aid Sprays instead of finding them at random, but hey- the choice is yours. Boss fights in this game aren't much different from previous RE boss fights, but they require a little more attention. Halfway through the game you'll take on what's basically the X-Man Wolverine, only blind and wearing armor. He charges around the room, slashing all over the place, attacking where he hears any sound. On the sides of the room are bells. You see what I'm getting at? That fight took me a good 15 minutes before I finally got it instead of trying to shoot the weak spot on his back, and only that. Then again, boss fights here can be very easy if you simply buy a rocket launcher from a merchant. They're fairly cheap, and you can buy one from every merchant. One shot from those babies, and almost every boss is gone in an instant. The enemy AI isn't the best on regular difficulty, but it's better than most mainstream games' these days. The villagers and monks will often attack in groups, but this actually makes it easier to take them out with a shotgun or rifle blast, or especially grenades.
Visually, the game looks great for when it was released, and it still does. There's rarely any slowdown, great textures, fantastic lighting, and some of the finest attention to detail I've ever seen in a game. Zoom in on El Gigante's face after you kill him for the first time, and you'll see his eyes slowly closing, and his eyebrow twitch. When Leon gets into a knife fight near the end of the game, he gets a scar on his cheek, and it stays there. Here in the GameCube version, you get improved lighting and textures, as well as some extra bouncage on Ashley's part for some reason. If you've got a great tv, this is the game to show it off with. The only complaint I'd have doesn't have as much to do with the visuals themselves as it does with lazy programing- the villager and monk characters all have maybe 4 or 5 variants. You end up killing the same ones after you just killed them. Heck, one time I had 3 of the same guy attacking me in the village. It was weird. As for the audio, the voice acting has finally attained tolerable status. Leon's great, Ashley's ok, Ada's outstanding, Krauser's a jerk, and the merchant is a pervert. I love 'em. But then there's Lord Saddler, the main antagonist. His voice could've been either more normal, or more menacing. Instead, it's just weird. The ambiance and sound effects kick ass here, so if you've got a surround sound setup, go nuts.
Once the game's over there's still plenty to do. You could try out Assignment Ada, a small side-quest in which you play as heroine Ada Wong for about an hour, trying to retrieve 5 samples of the Las Plagas for a higher power. While short, it's fun to play as Ada for a while, and trying out some of her moves. The Mercenaries is probably THE reason to get this game even if you have no interest in RE4, I know it was for me. Once I beat the game, I spent days playing this addicting mini-game. The Mercenaries has you run through one of four levels as Leon at first, killing everyone in sight while picking up time bonuses and items, racking up kills to get a high score. After you reach a set score, you'll unlock a new character- there are 4 to unlock: Ada, Hunk, Krauser and Wesker. My god, is this game addicting. This is one of the few times where I -wanted- to top my previous high score. And each character has their own unique abilities to get them through the stages. Actually, it's more of their action moves and weapons...like Wesker's Thrust Punch which sends enemies flying 10+ feet, Hunk's neck breaker, Krauser's ARM OF GOD WHICH KILLS EVERYTHING IN ONE HIT WITH THE PRESS OF A BUTTON, and Ada's great weapon selection. Yep, you're going to spend a lot of time here. And once you get 5 stars with each character in each stage, you'll unlock the Handcannon for the main game. Side note- it's worth mentioning that Krauser and Hunk's themes from The Mercenaries are ripped straight out of Capcom's lesser-known GC game: P.N. 03. I thought it was odd that they'd just recycle music from a game nobody played, and almost found it to be lazy of them. But the music still rules, especially Wesker's theme (I had to mention that somewhere in here).
While there are more special additions in the ps2 version, giving it more replay over its GC brother, both versions are great. The GC one has better visuals, controls and loading times...while the ps2 one gets more bonuses. I actually found it funny that the GC's controller worked better for this game, but then again, it makes sense since RE4 was made for the GC first. The analog stick is more responsive and smooth than the d-pad for the GC, and both the analog stick and d-pad on the ps2. In the ps2 version, I often found myself using the d-pad over the loose analog stick, but even then, sometimes I'd have trouble getting a perfect shot. Regardless, Resident Evil 4 is an outstanding game, and one of the best that this decade's had to offer so far.
The world stopped, and RE4 and I were the only things left..

If I could, I would give this game every star in the world. It is just that good. Some say that it is not Resident Evil, that it does not have any of the key elements that "make" Resident Evil. Yes, it is missing the Umbrella Corporation, yes there are no Zombies per-say, yes the fixed camera is gone, and yes, there is alot of ammo. HOWEVER, RE is the only series that has really scared the crap of me, yet still remains insanely fun to play. So, the question is, "Does Resident Evil 4 maintain that feel that only the RE games can acheive?" Answer? HELL YES. This game is fast paced, smart, fun and scary. There are no slow moving zombies that you can easily shoot down, there are now fast smart villagers (Ganado) apparently infected with something (I know what, but spoilers are no fun!). They chase you, come at you in waves, and if you think you are safe, they find ways of bringing you to them. The game takes place in a forest in Europe, and forests have never been scarier. Plagued with Ganado and traps, the game can pull out some awesome suprises, including a certain viallager with a chainsaw, who is very eager to take your head off. The controls are swift, and very easy to catch on too. You stay in the action the whole game, the only complaint I have is the lack of switching weapons fast. You have to go to the sub-screen in order to do this. The puzzles are still there, but they take very little time and generally not to hard, so the action is nver interuppted. You can now buy and upgrade weapons from a traveling merchant, which is very usefull. The bosses are inventive, and fun to face. In fact, the whole game is inventive, and fun to PLAY. It's scary, sure, but you never get too scared to play. You always want to see what happens next, and you always want to move on to see what kind of unexpected twists the game will take. Like I said, it is fast paced, smart, fun and scary. The gore is intense, but I love it. The cutscenes where you get particulary gruesome deaths (face melting, decapitation, etc) are very entertaining. Overall, I think this game is amazing, and should be a must have in any game collection. True, it does not have alot of the classic elements of RE, but alot of those elements were hindering and preventing the games from developing. This is a whole new kind of RE, and a better one I must say. Get over the fact that the "old" RE is taking a back seat for the time being, and enjoy the game for what it is : Amazing.

In the commercial it clearly states "forget everything you know about Resident Evil." This is really a short set of words that really go so far and mean so much. All gameplay is basically "corrected" to run like other games where you can aim and shoot, dodge attacks, and control your character in a way that your not rotating in a circle. However, it easily surpasses that. You determine what happens during cinematics at some points, by pressing buttons according to the set on the screen, the puzzles show to be less confusing, you can purchase and upgrade your weapons, but a huge factor is you can increase the amount of space you can hold objects. This really helps since there are many different guns and attachments.
One thing that hasn't changed is that the graphics are most likely some of the best if not the best ever seen. All effects,
reloads on guns, gore, and speaking movement on all characters is literally perfected.
What really makes this game so suspenseful is that the A.I.
is just as capable of doing things as your character Leon can.
They can organize and chase after you on any path you go. Through windows, up and down ladders, they will even hit the door your concealed behind until they break a devastating hole in it and come storming through.
Aside from recent games, it was all about the T-virus that turned the living into flesh-eating zombies. Now, it's a different story. There are so many enemies including:a man with a chainsaw, a lady with a throwing axe, a farmer with a pitchfork, a knight in shining armor, and men with cloaks that are believers of the religion called "Los Illuminados."
For some people that player Resident Evil Zero for Gamecube, that capability is somewhat included in this game with Leon Kennedy and Ashley Graham. You'll get the chance to play as Ashley once or twice and with Leon, you can tell her commands such as "wait" or "follow" to solve puzzles to progress more into the game. Also, while in battle, you can tell Ashley to hide in a dumpster or some hiding spot or whenyou jump down from a decently large fall, you can catch her when she jumps down. What seems to create some sense is that the believers of "Los Illuminados," needs Ashley as a sacrafice for a ritual they perform. During normal gameplay, they will grab her and if you fail at rescuing her by defeating the person that captured her, you automatically lose.
Even some small things may seem very important like how you have checkpoints and not continously reverting to where you last saved, you can save as many times as you please(this makes sense because there are many typewriters in the game), you can place your items in the places that you want to save space in your case, and how you can kick opponents while their weak and defenceless.
As there may be very many good qualities about this game, there are some negative. You have to backtrack pretty often, Ashley gets captured so many times. Whenever you finally reach you destination, you almost complete nothing and a new location is set for you to travel, the most powerful gun in the game, the Rocket Launcher, is almost a sure waste because it cost 30,000 and it has only 1 shot, then you dispose of it. Last,
the game itself just seems like non-stop violence and probably the most disgusting gore ever included in a video game.
Overall, this is a really great game, the best Resident Evil game to come out yet, and is a must buy.
Fear awaits...

I managed to see some footage of the game being played at this years E3 and here is what I got.
Resident Evil 4 is based 6 years after the massive nuclear strike which blasted all the zombies off the face of Racoon City. Leon Kennedy managed to get away unscathed but it isn't over for him. After getting special training from a secret agency, he's kitted off and sent to rescue the President's daughter Ashley.
The first thing you notice is that the whole game is in proper 3d. No more frames people, now it's a little like Zelda. Second thing you notice is the fact that there are barmy villagers armed with chainsaws and axes who are intent on killing Leon for whatever reason. Why they want to is still a mystery but it is terrifying. The graphics are great and so are the ways in which the villagers react. Shoot them in the leg and they will stumble where as if you shoot them in the head then... eeeeeeewwww!
There is also the introduction of some monks armed with scythe blades. Whoever these guys are, they have some hold over the villagers and a few of them look a little like zombies... could it be that the Zombies might make a return. Who knows.
Ashley will also be a playable character as she will be needed to solve different puzzles. She has a seperate health bar which if it falls to 0, then she dies and the games over. However, she also seems to be coughing blood a few times. Could she be effected by a virus. Hopefully she won't go all mad on us and try to rip our head off because if she does then Leon would have to kill her and that would be awful. (Plus the president would be a little miffed.)
All signs point towards a successfull game as Resident Evil 4 shapes up. With extra gore, extra visuals and extra fear, Resident Evil 4 looks good. It looks very good...
Wears thin fast

I loved Resident Evil (the Gamecube remake) and I thought that Zero was quite a lot of fun too (I never did play 2 or 3 as they were just ported onto the Gamecube straight from the PS1) but while Resident Evil 4 is an improvement in terms of graphics and hardware it doesn't have any atmosphere or the overwhelming sensation of dread and fear. This is basically down to the style of gameplay.
Gone are the spooky camera angles for a start. Instead, this time the camera is constantly behind Leon, following him in whatever direction he goes. It's a bit tricky at first but after a few minutes you'll get the hang of it. Also, the game is not really about exploration and mystery solving and you never really go back to the same place twice. Okay, this is a good thing in some ways as it did get a little annoying before (the 'door-opening' cutscenes are also gone) and I understand the gameplay of the franchise had to evolve but, the way it is, RE 4 just feels like a shoot-em-up.
In your long, long journey (the game is absolutely MASSIVE) Leon visits a rickety European village that seems stuck in the dark ages, onto an old castle, then to a creepy island and on into a huge fortress and laboratory. In this respect it feels a LOT like a Dungeon Siege game in regards to the constant running around in torchlit catacombs, killing big insects, collecting treasures, trading/building up your stats and weapons and looking for that way out which seems to be miles away through endless, labyrinthine corridors.
All you really do in this game is go forward and shoot. And it gets quite boring after the halfway mark. There is some very slight puzzle-solving but I suspect this was only put in to satisfy hardcore RE fans.
There are plenty of pros, like the brilliant graphics, the sheer size of the game is impressive, the cool extras and mini-games awarded after finishing (I did it in 15 hours and I WON'T be going through it again) and faster loading times. But the boredom of killing the zillionth evil henchman and his twin really gets mind-numbingly dull after hour 10.
I finished this in 6 days (the original and Zero took me much longer) so I suggest you rent this if your not the obsessive RE collector type. While it is a great-looking game and very slick, it just didn't keep me as thrilled (or as scared) as it could have.
My 'ALL TIME' favorite game!

This game alone is worth purchasing a Gamecube for! With all the extra weapons you can purchase and upgrade, it gives this game excellent replay value. I lost count of the number of hours I played and replayed this game.
It is certainly a game for MATURE players, and not for anybody with a heart condition. ;-)
I've played hundreds of games in during my 34 years on this earth, but this one is by far my favorite.
Um...Wow.

Alright, where do I begin. Well, Resident Evil 4 is the newest game in the legendary series, and possibly the best one too, mainly due to its plot and incredible gameplay. Resident Evil fans, think back. Remember the slow-paced RE games of yesterday? They're gone, and all that is left is the most intense game you are ever likely to play. RE4 is the best action game of the last two years, and will certainly be the best game of 2005. That is, unless, Gran Turismo 4 proves me wrong.
Let's start with the most revamped feature, gameplay. Remember those good ol' days when you couldn't see, aimed too easily, and were lucky to fight one zombie in each room? Those are gone as well. RE4 incorporates behind-the-back third-person views, which are an incredible step forward, and now, you aim with a laser sight. This means being able to target the chest, legs, arms, or head, and it means corresponding actions with each one. It also means blowing off heads is easier. Just think about maybe aiming at the chest or legs later in the game. Trust me, you'll see!
Graphics are the best in the series as well. The character models are so astonishingly real that your eyes may bug out. The environments look great too. And don't even get me started on how good fire looks! Every little thing about this game is gorgeous.
Sound has always been a successful trademark for the series, but you've never heard anything like this! The music is awesome, perfectly fitting the surreal mood! And the voice acting is terrific. We'll just leave it at that. Nearly as good as the graphics, please don't mute this game!
Resident Evil 4 is so chock-full of surprises, I never wanted to put the controller down. It is an amazing achievement in game making, and now that I have completed it, I feel like a gap is missing from my life. Do yourself a favor and purchase RE4. And if you don't have a Gamecube, this is more than reason enough to get one!

I am not usually a player of Resident Evil games. I played them and thought they were pretty damn good, but nothing I would get hyped up over. This game changed my perspective on RE games, but what a game could be. This game is SO HARD. It's one of those games where you say, "I've been playing this for 2 hours, why not try for another 2." I'm not too far in the game yet, but the enemies are not normal. They are so smart. Let's put it this way:If the enemies in this game had guns, you'd be !@#$ed!!!! You die SO FRIGGIN' FAST. That's what makes it fun to play. It's set aside from any other game i've played. One reason why: In any other game, when someone kills you with a chainsaw, a little blood flies, you go into a slow motion fall, and it plays sad music. NOT THIS GAME. I was standing there reloading my Shotgun, when a large man with a chainsaw was coming at me. As I pulled up to fire, he quickly put his chainsaw against my neck. My first thoughts were, "greate, now I get to see the bad graphics of the game." Yeah, I was wrong. To make a long story short: When my guy hit the ground, he hit it without a head on his shoulders.
