demise of a former passtime

The recent Combat Upgrade(CU) implimented by SOE to the StarWarsGalaxy game as a prelude to their next "Rage of the Wookies" expansion has reduced an enjoyable passtime to a wholehearted waste of money. The once well rounded and unique game play experience has been traded in for a cookie-cutter copy of other SOE MMORP's. The new play structure snubs the "star wars feel" for cheaper, yet glaringly colorful display graphics, distracting effects and the "level" system of play. If customers want EverQuest in space then this is now the game for you, otherwise overlook the appealing wrapper on this package.
For new players the SWG/JTL/RoW tri-purchace package looks like a good bargain, but in this instance, three poorly constucted products do not make one entirely enjoyable whole.
I no longer incourage my friends to join the game, nor would I inflict it upon anyone new unless they have very low expectations.
This game was great before 4/26/2005 Don't Buy this game!!!!

A few months ago I just got SWG JLS along with the "Official Game Guide" from Prima and Its now useless because of the so-called CU or combat upgrade. I want a total refund from Sony for the Guide $19.99 the SWG $29.99 JTS $19.99 and my 60 day pre-paid Game Card 29.99. THIS is not the game I payed for.
It's the only game I know were Healers are not allowed to heal.
I souldn't have to pay to be a beta tester this game is so buggy

Dear SOE,
We, your customers, have been trying to contact you. Evidently you've been too busy, or important, or arrogant, to take time to listen to us. If you had taken the time to listen to our concerns you would have heard that we were extremely concerned about the Combat Update. Those concerns began long before testing began, but when you rolled the thing out without adequately completing the testing and debugging process our concerns just about went through the roof!
And with good reason. Entire professions were decimated overnight (crafters, entertainers, and doctors, to name a few). Other professions found it no longer possible to play. I myself have a Jedi Padawan hiding in his house. He's already been killed for a loss of 200k Jedi xp. He can't get xp from anything that he can kill. And he can't kill anything that might give him the pitiful bits and scraps of xp that are meagerly tossed out in the new system. Your CSR's have reminded me that one of the objects of the CU is to "encourage" (I think they meant "force") group play. Brilliant! I can group with others, gain visibility, have 20 BH's show up to hand me my head on a platter (for yet another loss of 200k Jedi xp)! Are we having fun yet?
Weapons, armor, clothing, and various other items that we had spent great a great deal of time and resources perfecting, crafting, manufacturing, and obtaining became worthless overnight. For many of us this exercise was a significant and important part of the way that we choose to play in groups. It is the community that we chose to form. And we liked it. Very much in fact.
So, when the CU fell upon us we cried out with loud voices. We posted on your forums (many of which were quickly deleted, even when their greatest "offense" was to simply decry the CU). We contacted our CSR's. We wrote e-mails to the various outlets that we knew of within your organization.
And we heard nothing. No admission of wrongdoing. No validation of our concerns, our losses, or even our concerns.
We were looking for reasons to be hopeful. Reasons to believe that the time, effort, and money that many of us have invested in our characters, our professions, and our community would not simply be flushed down the toilet. Reasons to believe that our concerns were being listened to, were being taken seriously, and would be responded to with the respect that they deserved. And reasons to believe that this game that we have loved for so long would be fun once again.
But we received no such reasons, and so I'd thought I'd take just a moment to summarize some things that have transpired "while you were out"...
- We remembered that you are a business, first and foremost, and that, like it or not, money often speaks louder than words. So, thousands of us cancelled our pre-orders for RotW, and thousands more cancelled our SWG accounts outright.
- We remembered that retail products today live and die by word-of-mouth. So, we wrote letters and e-mails to the editors of gaming magazines that review products such as yours. We told them about what you have done to this game that we dearly loved, and how you have treated us, your customers. And they listened very attentively.
- We remembered that the majority of customers today will read an online review before making a purchase decision, so we went (by the thousands!) to sites like EBGames and Amazon.com and others and we posted our reviews.
We want our game back. The one that we have paid for over the last 2 years. The one that our characters chose to live, grow, and interact in. The game that we, your customers, made a living and breathing Star Wars Galaxy. The one that was fun, and enjoyable, and varied, and allowed us to choose our play-style. Oh, and did I mention that it used to be fun, as well?!
Just thought you'd want to know.
Sincerely yours,
Don't waste your money on a 2nd rate knockoff of WoW.

LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment recently changed this game radically with what they called a "combat upgrade". Despite the fact that the beta testers (like me, "alexi123") and many live-server testers said that they hated it (more than 80% negative feedback), SOE and LA shoved it down our throats.
All the negative responses were deleted from their forums, and all responses from the companies have been to the tune of, "give it a try".
We have tried it. We tested it as hard as we could. We told you it . You didn't listen. Now players are quitting in scores.
This game is no longer "Star Wars Galaxies", it's a combination of EverQuest 2 and World of Warcraft. Don't waste your time or money here, buy WoW instead. At least Blizzard games listens to the feedback of their customers.
I would say,...wait for World of Warcraft

In a nutshell, to the individuals pumping up their "ooo, I got you" thing, saying no one has played Jump to Lightspeed...I remind them that there is a Beta of JTL currently...meaning...people HAVE played JTL. JTL will not save Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. The expansion is as broke as the Core game. The Core game has all the same bugs, that seem to get worse with every publish for the game. JTL is no different...Content wise...JTL is just another grind, the content is laughable (compared to World of Warcraft, FFXI, and several other content driven mmorpgs). They should have included this expansion as part of the Core game from the start. This should clue you in. SOE only cares about dollar signs. Take this from someone that loves Starwars, and had 4 accounts with swg, and has played since october of last year. I have played nearly every profession in the game...either by grind...or due to extreme boredom with the professions...as there is no content. PvP in this game is weak. all pvpers have only slight variations in their templates...i.e. everyone is the same.
I had a Jedi as well, no I didn't sell it, And Jedi was truly a disappointment. Currently there are several exploits in the game to ensure a Jedi goes -1 million xp in the hole...no, im not lying...im very serious 1 million xp in the hole.
My recommendation to you the consumer is, if you have swg, realize it is not a Starwars game but an SOE game, and if you are not a current swg player skip this online garbage for something a little more entertaining and a lot less boring.
oh, one more thing. Customer Service in this game, its documented...Is non-existant the CSRs are incompetent and poorly trained. They have no ability to assist you in anyway. And they will only aggravate you further. Save yourself a headache, dump this game in the trash and go play freecell (solitaire type game)...at least then you will have fun.
Failing to Deliver, SWG/JTLS Potential Not Reached

This game promised so much. Star Wars content, Star Wars characters, a Civil War like we remember from the movies and books. Sadly, NONE of this has materialised in a game that has been out for over a year. With 10 major publishes (revisions) during that time, the game is so full of bugs and so lacking in real Star Wars content, it is nothing more than a partially completed version of SOE's cash cow, Everquest.
Multiplayer game Fan bois and die hard Star Wars fans will want to overlook these flaws. Sadly, I am a SW fan who went to the first movie many years ago and was instantly hooked. I bought SWG, my first online gaming experience, and was initially caught up in the hype and potential. But now....after hundreds and hundreds of hours or playing, I have to admit that this product bears little resemblance to the world I came to love.
Just one very small example of the disconnect....there are dozens of others: No where in the movies or books does "advanced composite armor" appear. Yet, this is the best armor in the game and is seen on almost every single fighter, be it PvE or PvP. How is it that the art team developed this suit of armor, and made it the best available, for a game replete with visual references we all recognize? A minor flaw perhaps, but symptomatic of the 'non-Star Wars' experience.
The changes that need to be made include a major reconstruction of the combat system, infusion of Star Wars content, meaningful quests, yet another revamp for the elite Jedi class (achieving this level has been reduced to a mind-numbing experience points grind) and better customer service.
Wait....don't invest the time and energy it takes to immerse yourself in the Star Wars Galaxies universe until the development team focuses considerable energy on these areas. As other reviewers have stated, the game still feels like it is in beta.
Fun start, then back to same old same old

In the Beta I have to say space is beautiful. They did an excellent job with the art and space combat can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, that fun does not have much longevity. Once you have finished your piloting skill trees you have no new content except PVP. The same problems with the ground PVP game are present in the JTL. As with SWG there is a ton of potential that is not being lived up to.
If I had confidence in SOE being able to fix the bugs in JTL, they still haven't fixed some from launch of SWG, and their ability to add content, once again not evident in SWG, it could be a good game. Unfortuantely, the game is lacking, SOE's management of SWG is lacking, and I do not see this as a good purchase. So do plenty of research before buying this expansion.
Potential is there...

If you like the Star Wars universe and want to fly around in authentic ships shooting NPCs or your fellow PvPers, then this is a pretty good expansion. It added a couple of races to the game, and the ability to become a pilot or shipwright so there is some new content, not enough in my opinion to keep a lot of people that were bored with regular SWG sticking around until the next expansion comes out.
This is space, and there was a lot of potential here that didn't get tapped. When approaching a space station you have the option to land on a planet or repair your ship. You can't enter the space station, walk around, get missions, talk to NPCs, shop, have some drinks or do a little gambling. There are no new planets to fly to and explore, even though the SW universe has hundreds of planets to choose from. Mining asteroids for rare materials was talked about as something players wanted for artisans with special ship attachments, but that was never added. Shooting down a freighter doesn't yield interesting cargo - maybe some credits, or an engine or shield part. Hard core SW fans will love the game. Those who have been holding on to SWG in hopes of some new content to keep them occupied will find a few good hours of play, but I don't think it will be enough to keep them with the game. It's sad that the Christmas shopping season cuts short so many good ideas from being implemented.
SWG - Finally it is set to right.

If you notice, most of the bad reviews here were made by people angry that SWG went through a revamp or Combat Upgrade. However, the original game was a patched up Frankenstein. The only way to set things right and get it back on track was to tear it down and rebuild it. Lets face it, the original game was always labeled a "big flop" in the gaming community. It took them two years to write a new verison and publish it. It is actually a smart move to re-launch then to fix a bad game. Most of the very angry people are those who stayed with the bad game and put a lot of time into their characters, only to have a new game forced upon them. I can understand that anger. However, I thought the original game sucked and left after six months. I have since returned after the CU and see that SWG is now on the right track and "fixed" like it always should have been. So, yes, many people will leave from anger or fear of change. However, more will join, and a few more will come back. I talked to a couple of newbies last night who got the game after watching Episode III and they absolutely love it. You see, they don't have the baggage of someone who started 2 years ago and see the game for what it was intended to be.
Understand why the people here are angry, and rightly so. But, also understand the new game is very good if taken not as an upgrade to the old, but as its own game.

the core game has to be purchased along with jtls there are many flaws in the core game which the deveolpment team had a schuduel outlined for fixes
recently it was annoucned all major stuff on hold till after the expansion was released, thus you have an rection to that announcment here
folks paying for one game not being fixed while another is being developed
the space game is a twitched based game not everyone that plays swg was planning to buy the expansion
yet due to the expansion may have to wait a year or more for there Known bugs and classes/proffesions to be fixed
i would proceed with caution and re look at this offering during a free trial, or a year from now which should give 6 months of bug fixes to jtls and an additional few months to core game to be worked on
this is a buyer beware
