SWG is betting everything on JTL

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 24 / 42
Date: June 18, 2004
Author: Amazon User

Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) was launched with a great deal of fanfare last summer. It was fairly well received - despite the extreme number of bugs that plagued the game from the very first day. Fans of the Star Wars genre and veteran online players alike were both impressed by the shear potential of the game. The SWG Development Team at Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) went through a trial by fire last fall and this spring where the fans of SWG hope they learned their lessons.

SWG itself is poised for Publish #9 on June 22, 2004 - wherein the vaunted revamp of the entire "Jedi system" will be begun (the original system that was shipped with the game was a complete failure involving monotonous "grinding" of skills.)

This is the first step that will continue with the complete overhaul of the combat system and the player vs. player war (or "Galactic Civil War") system. Both of these systems have been completely redesigned - because again - the shipped versions were failures in every estimation (including the developers) once they were seen in the field.

The final step to this overhaul will be the launch of the Space Expansion in this expansion package - "Jump to Lightspeed". Untold numbers of current SWG members have put their accounts on hold awaiting JTL. SOE is literally gambling everything on this expansion. Should JTL be plagued with the same numbers of bugs and system failures as the initial version - all those fans that have "hung on" or return for JTL will in all likelihood finally surrender.

So over the next few months SOE has this last chance to put all of the lessons they've learned into effect and achieve the game its fans are hoping for. They have a waiting audience eager for the resurrection of SWG that JTL represents.

For the love of god DO NOT buy this game

Star Wars Galaxies has been out for over a year with endless broken content, developer misinformation and a severly broken PvP system. There have been promises non-stop from SOE and thier lackeys in the form of upcoming additions and core tweaks. Now the most important core tweak of them all, the Galactic Civil War, has been put off for a YEAR so these guys can put out a space expansion. This expansion will cause more problems than it solves and is only being pushed to bring in new players at a time when they are losing old ones at a rediculous rate because the core game problems are being ignored. There are 30somethig professions and recently weve had a revamp of the stupidest most underused profession ever which is Image Designer. In case you dont know, Image Designer can change the way your character looks, so you can see where the programmers priorities lie. We have been crying out in pain for a year about what needs to be done to balance combat and have been ignored 100% by the Sony Corporate Machine so they can concentrate on adding broken content to an already broken game.

Do yourself a favor and dont buy the core game, dont buy the expansion, dont buy from SOE. They will lie to you to keep your money coming in while pushing new eye candy to bring in more customers that is maybe compareable to the rate at which players are leaving.

If you do buy the game you will not see me, as of today July 16, 2004 I have cancelled my 2 accounts and am not looking back to see the ship sinking.

Don't buy this game

Jump To Lightspeed is the expansion for Star Wars Galaxies, so for the enjoyment of JTL, the basic game must be good too. And frankly, it is not good.

While the graphics are amazing and the choice and variety of professions is huge, this is not a game you would want to play for long.

The combat system is very poor, and PvP combat is broken, with only a few professions being any good. There is simply NO Star Wars feeling to this game, because no-one looks like the movies. Imperials and Rebels all wear exactly the same armor and Jedi are horribly unbalanced and it takes an eternity to get Jedi. Furthermore, melee combat characters are much stronger than ranged combat characters, which is a travesty for this kind of game really.

The Developers show time and time again they cannot keep their promises and they only go for quick fixes that lead to new bugs. Priority lies with getting new people to join by announcing various gimmicks and 'carrots' and they need that because the departure rate of current (veteran) players is very high.

Keep an eye on their forums to see if the game improves in the long run, since these kinds of games do tend to change, but currently I would not buy it.

Geatest Expectation

Please read this link. This will give you some ideas what's going on in the world of SWG. This shows how they value more their money then the core internal of SWG.

JTL is the icing on the cake. The core game is in the ground combat. Everything was pushed back.

SWG is a good game, but it's mostly based on hope. A lot of players have envisioned it to be one of the greatest, but it seems the developers don't really care what the customers think (or the people at the high end don't really care forcing them to do things).

Core game unfinished

The main SWG game is unbalanced/unfinished, very buggy and incredibly boring after a month or two. The developers don't care about the opinions of their own customers and are trying to push out this expansion when 99% of the players are telling them to fix the main game before adding more bugs through an expansion. Stay away from this until the main game (which you must buy to use this expansion) is fixed through combat and galactic civil war publishes.

Do Not Buy This Game

This game has not even been released and I can say this to you.

Jump to LightSpeed is an expansion for the ground based game called Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. The original game is so bug ridden and unbalanced at the moment and SOE and Lucas Arts are not fixing it at all. In fact they have been lying to us, the paying customers, and are continually pushing back majorly needed bug fixes and revamps. SOE's major rebuttal to all these delays is that it is working on Jump To Light Speed and can't get around to fix the ground game. As we all know of MMORPG's, they all have major bugs at ship. The summary to my review is this.... How can SOE/LucasArts expect to maintain SWG: An Empire Divided and Jump to LightSpeed at the same time?..... They can't.

Avoid this game like the plague.

Main game unfinished

The main game (which you need to play this expansion) is very buggy, it's unfinished and extremely unbalanced. In short it's no fun at all. The developers are ignoring their own customers by releasing this expansion while the main game is in such a poor state, full of huge KNOWN problems.

Stay away from this expansion until the main game is fixed. Trust me, you don't want to waste your money on SWG in its current state.

Broken game, Broken Promises, Lies abound

Hundreds if not thousands of people waited in great anticipation for the release of Star Wars Galaxies. Beta came and those of us fortunate enough to test the game diligently went about our duties testing and making bug reports. Soon it became apparent that not everything was being fixed or the bugs would crop back up in later releases.

Day of the announcement came that the game was to be released and almost unanimously the Beta Testers cried out for more time. The game was not ready. We were not listened to.

Bugs, broken professions and shoddy customer service from Sony Online Entertainment plagued us from the very start. Combat Professions were broken to the point that only 1 or 2 of them were viable in PVP combat. Yet we were told by the CRM that we had to be patient, that the Combat Revamp would fix all. That was in November of 2003.

Patiently we waited, The Jedi class (which should not even be in the game at the present) was created and revamped. "Now it's our turn" thought the Galactic Warriors on both sides.

Not to be

SOE has decided to devote all of it's programming resources to making JTL (Jump to Lightspeed) which is an expansion, instead of fixing the core game first. WE and YOU can look forward to a MASSIVELY broken game that as far as we can tell will never be fixed.

SWG was great in concept and alot of us looked forward to many years of playing.

After 3 months of beta testing and over a year of playing, this is one hard corps gamer who will never buy another thing from Sony Online Entertainment.

The game is not worth the money, and I refuse to pay for a Beta Test game while getting the shaft from the company that makes it AND being lied to all at the same time.

Can't endorse this development team

Six months ago I was certainly looking forward to the Galaxies expansion that took us into space.

Today, there's no way I would buy another product managed by this development team. Crucial fixes to broken and unplayable systems in the base Galaxies product have gone unfixed for six months (despite constant developer assurances that these problems were being 'worked on') and customers only recently found out that key fixes to the in-game combat system and the high-end Galactic Civil War content would be delayed yet *another* four to six months while work on this space expansion was prioritized.

Just an understaffed, poorly managed development team ... very little progress on getting the game polished in the last six months, and today I have no plans to buy Lightspeed whatsoever. In fact I'm dropping Galaxies on the 26th of this month.

Definately Fun , But Buy it on Sale if possible

Alot of the problems that are being mentioned in the previous reviews deal mainly with Player Versus Player combat. You can be a Master Combat Class profession and when fighting against other Combat Professions (Combat Medic in particular) prepare to be slaughtered. (This is in PvP)

(That's what makes that aspect of the game unfun for many)

Player Versus Environment (Other NPC (Non Player Characters) Is fun, and is challenging up to a point. I've been playing since Nov 2003 and still find the game fun. (I am a Master Commando) Content is there if you look for it (there are tons of websites that detail all the missions you can take and the rewards)

Bottom Line I'll be staying with the game and will be buying the space expansion. The same people on the forums that are screaming about delaying SPACE are the same people that screamed about not having SPACE in the first place.

Definately pay as you go, paying no more than 3 months in advance.

Also remember that until this expansion comes out (In October 2004) then any review will be about the core game.

A great many people find the game fun, but your fun will only last for so long. I just hope the Space Expansion is worth the wait.

Customer Service for me has always been good. Any issues I've had were resolved promptly by the CSR.

Mike
